After the Vought XF8U-3 Crusader III was cancelled, the three flight worthy aircraft were transferred to NASA for atmospheric testing, as they was capable of flying above 95% of the Earth's atmosphere. NASA pilots flying at NAS Patuxent River routinely intercepted and defeated U.S. Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs in mock dogfights, until complaints from the Navy put an end to the harassment.

Vought XF8U-3 Crusader III, it was powered by the Pratt & Whitney J75-P-5A engine generating 29,500 lbf (131 kN) of afterburning thrust and designed for brief excursions to Mach 2.7. it competed against to the McDonnell Douglas XF4H-1 Phantom II, losing to it even though it was more maneuverable. Command incorrectly believed the age of dogfighting was over and ordered the F-4 since it could carry a larger payload.
