Vought XF8U-3 Crusader III
First flown in 1958, the Crusader III was designed as an all-missile fighter to compete with the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II (then F4H). While externally resembling the F-8 Crusader, the XF8U-3 was larger, more complex, and had greater performance. In tests, the Crusader III regularly out-maneuvered the F-4, but pilots found the new systems to be overwhelming (the F-4 had a second crew member to handle radar). Additionally, the F-4's air-to-ground capability and larger payload doomed the Crusader III. It was cancelled, with five aircraft built.
Crusader III's were loaned to NASA, as they were capable of flying outside of 95% of Earth's atmosphere, and the Navy routinely complained about NASA pilots flying out of NAS Patuxent River engaging, and defeating, nearby F-4 Phantoms in mock dogfights. All five aircraft were eventually scrapped.
