Re-Kostnice: The Re-creations series from caroline huf on Vimeo.
As part of my Masters Program in 2016 I went on a field trip to Europe in order to recreate a series of short films in the site in which they were originally made. These works included a film by Jan Švankmajer: "Kostnice" in Czech Republic; and two films by Marie Menken: "Arabesque for Kenneth Anger" made at the Alhambra in Spain, and "Bagatelle for Willard Maas" 1958 filmed at the Palace of Versailles. The three film re-creations became diptychs. On the left of the screen is my recreation and on the right of the screen is the 'original' that I filmed from Youtube. the fourth recreation was of an observational text by Georges Perec "An attempt at Exhausting a place in Paris"

Willard Maas, June 24, 1906 – January 2, 1971.
With Marie Menken.
“Willard and Marie were the last of the great bohemians. They wrote and filmed and drank (their friends called them ‘scholarly drunks’) and were involved with all the modern poets.”
Andy Warhol.

Tableau at Cocktail Hour by Willard Maas
Here at our sides the shadow-painted eyes, The determined lips that shock the mouth with smiles, Out of the window from the water the plane takes off, Gaining the altitude for the flight home, Leaving us in the room with the smoke and the poisonous laugh.
We have lost the adolescent New Year pledges, Forgotten the package of cellophane flowers That held the secret in expensive corsages,  While we await the scream of the tabloid page, Rearranging furniture and reading hours.
There are trips to be taken at the travel bureau But none that takes us back to college days. The Mediterranean is no desire in blue, The haystack no retreat for moonlight parties, Finding all false that once we found so true.
And from the hot plains the infantry returns With heroes charging in afterdinner speeches: Building a wall about decaying love We guard our smallest deeds from the day’s alarm, Still seek the island of our childhood searches.
Is there hope in the dewy sun, in the star Magnetic to the blood on the summer night? In the eyelids touched, in war And dying for something, in the fabulous light Of the dark that reveals the inward scars?
Here are the timetables and the weather charts And we stand rooted to the living room, Lifting the ice-prongs to the whiskey glasses, While perpetually the doors close on the heart And all the burning world the heart named home.

What will the evening tell you Giving the soft star to the heart? Of what will the night speak Seeing the poor walk in sadness? ... What will the dark tell you of love? What will the dark tell you?                                               What the night?

Marie Menken
Marie Menken (1909 - 1970) was an American experimental filmmaker, painter, and socialite. In the mid 1940s Menken and her husband Willard Maas began The Gryphon Group, a well-respected avant-garde art group. Menken, bored by the static nature of paint on canvas, began to experiment with film and released her first film, Visual Variations on Noguchi, in 1945 with high acclaim within experimental art circles of the time. She used a hand-held and hand-cranked 16mm Bolex camera contributing to the spontaneity and agility of her work for example Noguchi is a non-narrative film that combines quick, decontextualized shots of the sculptures of Isamu Noguchi with shrill, discordant music.
Menken and the Gryphon Group began to produce numerous short experimental films around the time of Noguchi's release and Menken also began to experiment with types of animation techniques including collage and stop-motion.
Her 1962 film Notebook was shot between 1940 and 1962, and is arguably her best-known film and consists of short snippets of film she shot over the years spliced together in a meditative fashion. Menken continued to make films that both were influenced by and commented on the various art movements her contemporaries took part in, including abstract expressionism in Drips in Strips (1963) and pop art in Andy Warhol (1964).
Movement is a major theme in her films, either slow and meditative or quick and erratic. Unlike many other avant-garde films at the time, Menken’s earlier films lack any obvious symbolism, and were purely visually.
“There is no why for my making films. I just liked the twitters of the machine, and since it was an extension of painting for me, I tried it and loved it. In painting I never liked the staid and static, always looked for what would change the source of light and stance, using glitters, glass beads, luminous paint, so the camera was a natural for me to try—but how expensive!”
— Marie Menken, c. 1966

4. Poetry And The Film: Amos Vogel, Maya Deren, Parker Tyler, Willard Maas & Dylan Thomas Sessions 1 & 2 At Cinema 16 (10/28/ 1953) Part 1 Part 2 This historically significant symposium held at the venerable Cinema 16 film society unraveled the relationship between poetry and avant-garde cinema. Discussed are the types of poetic expressions in film, poetry as a visual medium, "cinepoems", and the influence of Vigo, Dali, Bunuel, Cocteau, and Eisenstein. A discussion surrounds the need to collaborate between writers and filmmakers, the divide between types of cinema, and collaboration as key for the future of film. * Please note condition of reel- phantom audio can be heard on pt 1 due to tape condition. the Re-creations series from caroline huf on Vimeo.
the Re-creations series: by Huf. This video shows excerpts from a series of works I call the Re-creations.as part of my Masters Program. I travelled to a number of countries in Europe in order to recreate a series of short films in the site in which they were originally made. My works based on that research included a recreation of a film by Jan Švankmajer: Kostnice at the Sedlec Ossuary in Czech Republic. I also remade two films by Marie Menken: Arabesque for Kenneth Anger at the Alhambra in Spain, and Bagatelle for Willard Maas 1958 which Menken had filmed at the Palace of Versailles. While in Paris I also attempted to re-create Georges Perec’s observational text “An attempt at exhausting a place in Paris”. I developed these works into a film series called the “Re-creations” (see Re-Creations series in video support materials).
The three film re-creations became diptychs: where, on one side of the screen is my re-creation and on the other is a copy of the ‘original’ film I shot from ‘YouTube’ on my computer. The juxtaposition of the original with my version, revealed a gap in time, societal change, and questioned the relationship between analogue and digital media technologies. However, my attempt to remake Perec’s Attempt, turned into something other than a straight-forward re-enactment. Although I sat in the same café and square where Perec sat, on the same dates the17th,18th,19th October, and wrote about the everyday things he observed, my creative response to "Attempt" explored how it felt that my twenty-first century life intersected with Perec’s at this site and addressed the documented and interpreted memories so created. Unlike the other Re-creations I had made; Perec’s was not screened as a diptych.
The Re-creations series explored the nature of autobiographical film and how self-identity might be found through identifying with others.
