Cover Story: Death Mysteries -- Whitney Houston autopsy cover-up; Kenny Rogers’ body is missing

Page 2: Reba McEntire’s new romance with Rex Linn convinced Kelly Clarkson she needed to walk away from her unhappy marriage -- while Reba’s love life was heating up Kelly’s relationship with husband Brandon Blackstock who is Reba’s former stepson was hitting the rocks and Kelly remained very close with Reba and Reba would tell her how happy Rex had made her
Page 3: Control freak Tom Cruise is a basket case after he couldn’t charm Cher into leaving their steamy fling out of her upcoming memoir and the image-conscious actor was so panicky over Cher spilling their sexy secrets that he personally called her -- they had a strong physical attraction when they met at a White House event back in the ‘80s and eventually they hooked up and it was very hot and very intense and over in a matter of weeks but it left a nice impression on Cher so she only has good things to say about their relationship but what happened between them could prove very embarrassing if it got out and Tom doesn’t want that to happen -- unfortunately for Tom Cher wouldn’t say anything about what she intends to write and wouldn’t promise to leave Tom out and that’s made Tom even more paranoid and he’s wondering if he’s going to have to take legal action
Page 4: Kanye West is keeping a secret divorce diary to use against wife Kim Kardashian and its potential dishy dirt has her famous family quaking in their boots -- Kanye’s convinced Kim’s about the kick him to the curb and is putting together collateral to crush her and her family is the couple spirals into a $2.2 billion divorce, Jennifer Garner at 48 is flaunting her best body ever and her motivation is to compete with ex-husband Ben Affleck’s 32-year-old girlfriend Ana de Armas because Jen was tired of hearing how Ben’s fallen head over heels for Ana and wanted to remind him what he’s missing -- Jen’s always been very confident of her looks but she decided to step out of mom mode to remind everyone how hot she still is
Page 5: Devastated Lisa Marie Presley has been relying on an old pal Smashing Pumpkins rocker Billy Corgan to repair her shattered life in the wake of the suicide of her son -- Lisa Marie and Billy were spotted together at Graceland not long ago and he’s been a huge source of support for her -- though they were rumored to have had a romance in 2018 Billy’s fully committed to his baby mama fashion designer Chloe Mendel and Lisa Marie would like nothing better for them to make beautiful music again but she knows he’s taken and she needs his friendship more than ever.
Page 6: Ambitious anchor Gayle King is calling the shots at CBS This Morning after executive producer Diana Miller quit in the latest backstage shake-up; there was tension between Gayle and Diana and now Diana is gone -- it’s like the show gave Gayle the keys to the car and even if she runs it into a ditch the network gives her more power -- Gayle also clashed with former co-host Norah O’Donnell who successfully snagged the anchor chair at CBS Evening News but Norah hasn’t wowed in the ratings and it’s a matter of time before Gayle gets the coveted job
Page 7: The mystery over the fate of country great Kenny Rogers’ body has left his own family members in the dark -- sources close to the singer said he’d been cremated while others charged his body is still on ice and Kenny’s body is missing as far as most people are concerned and there’s no place fans can go and pay their respects -- it’s most likely he’s been cremated and the ashes have yet to be scattered but there have also been whispers in certain circles that he could have been cryogenically frozen to preserve his body for a later date, many of Hollywood’s biggest names are abandoning Tinseltown to escape the COVID-19 pandemic and a collapsing entertainment industry -- Julia Roberts hightailing it to San Francisco and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson getting citizenship in Greece and Pierce Brosnan put his Malibu mansion on the market and Jim Cameron is peddling his prized L.A. compound
Page 8: Frustrated Jon Stewart’s plans to reinvent himself as the next Steven Spielberg have flopped and he’s pretty unhappy about it and he wants to be viewed as a respected serious filmmaker but he’s hit more roadblocks than he ever saw as a comedian or talk show host -- he was left fuming when Irresistible his latest outing as a director was met by mediocre reviews and limited to pay-per-view and streaming services last summer even with box office draw and best buddy Steve Carell in the cast -- he could snap his fingers and get any TV project but he’s setting his sights much higher and he’s walked away from millions of dollars to go back to TV because he wants to prove he is a creative force in the film industry
Page 9: Frustrated Brad Pitt is threatening to have ex Angelina Jolie dragged to jail if she refuses to end her harassment campaign against him and hash out a divorce and custody agreement and he’s had it with Angie’s intimidation tactics and is fed up with being labeled a bad dad and it’s no exaggeration to say Brad’s scared of Angie and he wants professional witnesses around them at all times when he attempts to see their children but for Brad though it would be the ultimate revenge to see Angie led away in handcuffs, Nashville legend Travis Tritt is trying to keep up with country music’s up-and-comers by getting a lift from plastic surgery and recent photos show the 57-year-old almost unrecognizable with a line-free face and skin as tight as a drum -- Travis is getting ready to put out his first album of new music in more than ten years and it’s hard to blame the guy when he’s completing against singers 30 years younger
Page 10: Hot Shots -- Julia Garner got a touch-up on the Staten Island set of Inventing Anna, Reverend Run visited a mural of slain Run-DMC bandmate Jam Master Jay in NYC’s Hollis Queens, Vanessa Paradis and daughter Lily-Rose Depp in Paris
Page 11: Lovestruck Chrissy Metz is already talking marriage and babies with newly unveiled beau Bradley Collins but she has a history of falling for guys fast which has previously been a recipe for heartbreak and while nobody’s doubting Bradley’s intentions there’s a lot of confusion about why they kept their romance totally hidden until now, the devastating fire that tore through Rachael Ray’s home has made her reassess her life and she and husband John Cusimano are now considering adopting a baby -- losing so many of their possessions in the fire made them realize they weren’t all that important anyway so they bulldozed the house and are rebuilding and the word is they’ll add a nursery
Page 12: Straight Shuter -- Danny Trejo cuddled a rescue pup (picture), Lizzo is the first plus-sized Black woman to ever grace the cover of Vogue but pulling off the shoot was a challenge with most designers unable to find clothes that fit her, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are very private and they’re livid with Lance Bass after he confirmed that they had another baby, when he was NBC’s biggest star Matt Lauer conducted almost every high-profile interview and now editors and doing a lot of cropping and zooming to preserve archived footage while removing Matt
Page 14: Crime
Page 15: Rock guitar god Eddie Van Halen who tragically died after a brave battle with cancer wanted to be buried with one of his Frankenstrat guitars that he created to define his signature sound -- Eddie felt like he owed his whole life to that instrument and he loved that thing as much as his family, Perez Hilton dished he kissed notorious skirt-chaser John Mayer in a New York nightclub and the lip-lock happened right in front of John’s then girlfriend Jessica Simpson who didn’t seem to know whether she was incredibly embarrassed or really turned on
Page 16: Cover Story -- explosive new autopsy evidence proves superstar Whitney Houston didn’t have to die -- eight years after she passed mysteries about her final moments and blatant blunders at the death scene point to murder and a shocking coverup and now investigators are demanding a new probe into the 2012 tragedy in a Los Angeles hotel bathroom and for Whitney’s body to be exhumed -- a private eye believes the autopsy proves Whitney was murdered but the case was never pursued because she was dismissed as a druggie and she was marginalized by law enforcement as a dead drug user
Page 18: American Life
Page 19: Horror movie legend John Saxon’s family started battling over his fortune even before he passed on July 25 -- in legal papers filed in May his son Antonio claimed the actor’s third wife Gloria Martel had been pocketing money against John’s wishes, Netflix faces criminal charges in Texas over the controversial film Cuties -- according to court documents a Tyler County grand jury indicted Netflix claiming it knowingly promoted visual material that depicts the lewd exhibition of the private parts of a clothed or partially clothed child younger than 18 -- Netflix said in a statement that Cuties is a social commentary about the sexualization of young children and this charge is without merit
Page 20: Suzanne Somers recently cheated death when she and husband Alan Hamel fell down a flight of stairs at their Palm Springs home and although Alan wasn’t seriously injured the terrifying spill left Suzanne in agony with two displaced vertebrae and forced her to undergo delicate neck surgery but she said the surgery went off without a hitch and promised she is on the mend, Hollywood Hookups -- Sofia Richie has unfollowed Scott Disick on Instagram, Zac Efron hopes to marry Vanessa Valladares, Sharon Stone and Mindy Kaling are both on the market
Page 21: Twelve years after she was placed under conservatorship Britney Spears remains unable to sign her own name on official documents -- Britney recently made moves asking to allow a different financial group to step in and help run her life as well as gain more freedom but lawyer Andrew Wallet said Britney to this day does not have the capacity to sign documents and make decisions for herself and she is susceptible to undue influences, the audience for the Saturday Night Live season premiere came away with more than just a few yuks they also received $150 because to get around New York State pandemic guidelines SNL gave each guest a parting gift of $150 paychecks as if they were employees, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may soon have a new neighbor in heavy metal maniac Tommy Lee -- the drummer was recently spotted checking out a $2.3 million three-acre plot next to the rogue royals’ $14 million home in Montecito and he was obviously pumped about living there but building the tattooed rocker’s home would mean tons of truck traffic and hopefully Harry and Meghan don’t get upset with the building work he’s planning
Page 22: ABC is reeling from a barrage of allegations from employees and on-air talent who’ve blasted it as a toxic and racist working environment -- the network which is owned by the family-friendly Walt Disney Corporation was rocked when Sunny Hostin the popular co-host of The View accused company executives of institutional and personal racism in her memoir and in later interviews about the book
Page 26: Lonely country singer Kenny Chesney is looking to find a new ladylove and is talking about finally settling down for good -- he is unhappily single after his eight-year relationship with model Mary Nolan hit the rocks -- he spends all the time he’s not on the road at his island paradise in Antigua but he misses having a partner and he’s even asked pals Matthew McConaughey and Richard Branson to play matchmaker
Page 28: America is preparing for World War III as China amps up war games in the South Pacific and readies plans to invade U.S. allies -- military insiders warn China and Russia and their tyrannical accomplices in Iran and North Korea and Syria and Turkey are bracing to launch a coordinated attack against America and the west that could end in nuclear disaster
Page 36: Health Watch
Page 38: Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood has traded in his debauched days of sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll for knitting, Rod Stewart revealed there’s a deep freeze between him and former close pal Elton John and that Elton refused his attempts to that things out -- the two ‘70s icons had been friends for decades before Rod blasted Elton’s biopic and his most recent music tour -- when Rod realized he was in the doghouse he tried to bait Elton with a bone for his kids by inviting Elton’s boys Zachary and Elijah to come play soccer with his sons Alistair and Aiden only to be greeted with the sounds of silence

Congratulations, SOPHIE! You’ve been accepted for the role of GONERIL. Admin Jen: There are no words to describe how thrilled I was while reading your app, Sophie. Grace is a hellion, a creature of unbridled chaos and hunger, but she’s ultimately human, and because that is so easy to disregard, it made it all the more impactful that you emphasized it so thoroughly. There was such thought and consideration put into your portrayal, but it wasn’t without the touch of introspection and unpredictability that’s integral to Grace’s personality. It was the perfect balance, and one that’s left me absolutely in love with the Goneril you’ve brought us. I can’t wait to see what more you have in store for her! Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.
WELCOME TO THE MOB.

How did you find the rp?  | Tags, I think? It was a while ago but I’ve only just had the time and inspiration to apply now.
In Character
Character | Goneril, Grace Daly
What drew you to this character? | Honestly I tossed between Lillian and Grace for so long. Normally I’m drawn to soft, angelic characters like Lillian but this time I decided to try something a little different. Grace is kind of an experiment, if you will! I really want to try my hand at someone who’s more morally corrupt, someone who’s flaws are a bit more obvious, and someone who (probably) breeds a lot of conflict. Also, she just seems like a ridiculous amount of fun!
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
STEP ONE. Grace has an interesting relationship with violence. It’s common perception that she enjoys it, and maybe she does. To an extent. But to psychoanalyze it a little bit more, she doesn’t enjoy the violence so much as she enjoys the power trip it gives her. Grace has an addiction to power, possibly because of the relationship she had to it growing up. As a child, she never asked for anything. She never had to. She never got to. This is not a sob story - she was still spoilt to the core. But she had little control of the way she grew up, and she had even smaller control of her siblings, of which she was supposed to be the eldest, the guiding light. When was the last time she had any sort of power over her sisters, who could not be more different in nature? Her rank as soldier must be incredibly irritating as well. There is nothing Grace craves more than power, and yet it seems to be the only thing that’s stripped from her and time progresses. So, naturally, the only place she can channel it is violence. It would be interesting to see if, should her ranking increase, her capacity for violence might grow into something else. (I suspect not. But you never know!)
STEP TWO. Along the same lines - Grace has done a lot of terrible things, and I would love to explore the limits of her remorse. Is she really so heartless, or are there consequences? Does she do what she does because she wants to, or because she has to? And which reason is worse? Grace is boisterous, or maybe even arrogant, about her lack of guilt, but she’s not psychopathic, and these things are bound to catch up to her at some point in time. I’d love to see how she deals with this, especially because I suspect it will mostly be dealt with in the form of destruction (a default mode for Grace Daly).
STEP THREE. And finally, her sisters. Although Grace might disagree, they are quite integral to who she is as a person. She grew up with them, and no matter how she might deny it, there are parts of them that have to stick to her. I personally headcanon Grace as the id to Regan’s ego and Catherine’s superego, and without them, Grace is left to fulfill her own aggressive desires without any sort of barriers or consequences. I think a part of Grace recognises that they might try to restrain her nature (Catherine would, at any rate) which is why her efforts are so high in order not to care or spare a second thought about them. Grace isn’t really a person of major personal attachments or sentimental drivel, and as such, sisters are seen as inconveniencing and burdening rather than family. There is also a deep sense of burning, seething jealousy that lives in Grace constantly. Her younger sisters, her superiors. That was never going to sit well with her. And now that they’re on opposing sides, I really want to see the limits of Grace’s personal loyalty. What would she put before her sisters? Certainly, herself. But what else?
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Please. I think it’s only a matter of time before Grace is cut.
In Depth
“I’ve got a family,” says the man. She can’t remember his name, but she will remember his fear, and his begging, and the exact hue of his blood for days to come. Murder stories are, of course, the best stories. Particularly at Christmas.
“You have my sympathies,” she tells him. “I’ve got one too."
It’s funny, really. The things people will say when you’ve got a gun to their head. Sometimes she thinks people are more preferable when they’re in mortal peril. No lies. No bullshit. Grace has an abhorrent, obsessive hate for bullshit.
"Please,” the man says. There are tears in his eyes, and for a moment he is all Catherine at five years old, crying because Grace had pushed her over, crying because Grace had taught her a lesson. But this isn’t her sister, and she’s not five anymore, and either way, Grace wouldn’t care.
“Try again,” says Grace evenly. The gun is cool against her fingertips, just how she likes it.
His eyes narrow, and Grace can see it coming. The spite. The acceptance. Sometimes, when people are at their end, they’re more agreeable. Other times, they’re just insufferable.
“You can’t even say it, can you? You don’t even know what it means. Please. I bet you’ve never said the word in your life.”
He is, in a way, right. Grace never says please. It’s a volatile word, writhing and spineless. It has no function, except for the weak. Saying please is asking for something, and there is never any reason to ask for something when she could just take it, instead.
A roll of her eyes. “Please,” she says. “Shut the hell up. This will be faster if you confess."
"I would rather die than confess."
These men, with their million dollar cufflinks links and their precious poker games. They think they’re all so different. They think they’re all going to be the ones to change Verona. Even Cosimo and Damiano are just fools at the top of their game. In a world where Grace cares, she’ll sit them down and say Look at you. Look at what you breed. You raised a family of sinners, and then you gave them guns. You don’t want to know what I can do with a gun. Worse, you don’t want to know what I can do with a sinner.
"That can be arranged,” she tells him. Lips curl; the Devil’s smile. Ah, well. She already knows he’ll be waiting for her at the end of the line. And when she gets there, she’ll be ready to slit his throat and take over hell, too.
This man is going to die. He thinks he’s going to be forever martyred, but in two weeks or two days or two hours Italy will forget his name. The man serving under him will gleefully take his place, until one day he is murdered too. Maybe his daughter will remember. Maybe one day she will bring a knife and a thirst for revenge to Grace’s doorstep, and she will eagerly await that day. But for now, no one will miss him.
“Tell Cosimo he will live to regret this,” says the man, in perfect imitation of every Hollywood movie ever. Grace wants to laugh, but she doesn’t want to waste time.
“I’ve had a change of management, idiota. Signor Montague pays his respects."
The saddest part of pulling the trigger is that she has to find an excuse to do it again.

GTKY Once edition
I was tagged by @theonceoverthinker! under the cut since it’s loooong
Musical episode: Yay or nay? Yay. I don’t necessary like the plotline in the episode - it felt a bit rushed to me, which they had to do in order to fit all the music in the one-hour episode. I enjoyed the episode overall and loved the songs - I eternally have “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine” stuck in my head, and I love Emma’s moment so much. And you can tell the cast had so much fun doing it. For a lot of shows, musical episodes don’t make sense, but it fit perfectly here.
When did you start watching Once, and do you remember why? Actually a pretty good story! I started in October 2011, the first episode I watched in full being Snow Falls. I was having a rough week. We had been hit by a monster blizzard out of nowhere, and had spent almost the entire previous week without power. To top it all off, my high school boyfriend had a generator at his house (while my family & I sat in the cold and dark) and didn’t invite me over once that week. I broke up with him (that being the culmination of a lot of problems with him), but since it was my first real “relationship”, I was pretty upset, and my parents were out to dinner, which left me home alone and desperate for something to do. I turned on the TV and saw that Once was on, and remembered thinking it looked interesting. I was immediately hooked, and it turned my whole week around. What made watching Once worthwhile? I think this show has something for everyone to relate to, whether it’s a specific character, a relationship, a particular arc, or just the whole concept of hope, love, and family. It’s also a way for us to watch some of our favorite childhood characters in a whole new light, coping with (some) issues that we ourselves might deal with. I also watched it with my mom, which made it a great bonding experience for us once I introduced it to her right before the Season 2 premiere. First + Current Main Ships? Snowing was my first OTP! I was a bit biased having seen Snow Falls before any other episode, and I think that’s their best episode as a couple. As for current ships, I ship pretty much everyone with everyone! There are so many great dynamics to enjoy, but if I had to pick a current top 3, I would probably go with Captain Swan, Swan Queen, and Rumbelle. First + Current Favorite character? My first favorite character is a tough one, since it’s been almost seven years since I first started watching the show. I want to say it was probably Belle - I adored her from the second she appeared on my TV screen. She’s still my favorite character, joined by Killian & Regina. Favorite arc (Why?)? I love the original arc most (Season 1), but I feel like most people do, so I’ll say Season 3B (the Wicked Witch). It had a lot of the same story elements of Season 1 without being a complete plagiarism of it, and there were a lot of great dynamics that were explored. I also think Bex made a wonderful villain! Favorite plot twist? In Season 3B, I loved Regina being the one to break the curse! Everyone spent the entire arc trying to find a way for Emma to break it, and it seemed like it would be a Swan Believer TLK, but instead, we got all the Regal Believer feels. And this time, Regina got to be the savior by defeating her sister with light magic. It was a great way for her character to come full circle. Speaking of 3B twists, an honorable mention to Snow White casting the Dark Curse by crushing Charming’s heart. Can’t elaborate or I will start crying. Hardest death to watch? I have to agree with Jenna on this one - although Killian’s deaths never really stick, his are the hardest for me to watch because (for those of you who have followed previous rewatch posts of mine) Colin’s mannerisms remind me so much of my boyfriend (not the boyfriend with the generator!!! a several years later and several years wiser boyfriend). So it’s really difficult to watch Emma’s reaction after he sacrifices himself at the end of 5A - Jen’s acting is incredible. And the elevator scene at the end of 5B always gets me too. This character should have gotten more time? *grabs megaphone* RUBY LUCAS! How do you summarize the show to your friends? (max. 3 sentences) Basically it’s a bunch of fairytale characters in the real world. They’re always cursed. They’re all related. Favorite Once specific trope (think Memory Wipe, Family Trees, Glowing Walkey-Talkey Hearts, Head Achey Timelines…) I don’t know if this counts but the theme of finding each other is really special in my opinion. It goes so far past Snow & Charming finding one another. Pretty much every character gets to experience finding someone they love.
Three quotes that mean a lot to you? “I am not nothing! I was never nothing! The power that you have, I don’t need.” “You are not all evil, and I am not all good. Things are not that simple.” “You don’t get to decide what I do or how I feel. I do.” If you could take home any prop from the set, what would it be? Either Henry’s book or Snowing’s ring! Favourite funny scene? One that comes to mind (that I recently watched) is when Charming is helping Rumple look for Belle in Storybrooke after she runs away, and Rumple has to awkwardly ask Charming for dating advice. And then it comes back later in Lacey when Rumple has to get Charming’s help to ask her out. Favorite Platonic Ship: Either Charming & Red or Belle & Red (definitely wish Red Beauty was not platonic even though I love Rumbelle) Favorite dish from Granny’s? I would have to say Granny’s burger! Belle highly recommends.
Tumblr media
What part of the newly merged realms would you like to live in? Probably regular Storybrooke, within walking distance from Granny’s.

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - “Musclecup”
Tumblr media
Written by: Haley Mancini
Written & Storyboarded by: Kyle Neswald, Benjamin P. Carow
Directed by: Nick Jennings, Bob Boyle
Buttercup used BULK UP! It wasn't very effective...
Tumblr media
The episode starts with a superhero flexing his butt cheeks. Let that set the tone for the rest of the episode.
Tumblr media
That aforementioned butt belongs to Totally Not Terry Crews from the old Old Spice commercials, or Abs Man for short, a superhero that loves to advertise his Muscle Maxifier. He's opening up the Briepot Depot, a cheese store, and cuts the "now opening" ribbon with his abdominals. That cheese store ends up being a running gag that doesn't really go anywhere.
Buttercup makes it quite clear that she is a super fan of this character of the week. No real reason in particular, though it's implied that she loves those muscles as she slowly flies across them in an exaggerated pan. She tries to introduce herself in a way that makes her look like a dork.
Tumblr media
They introduce themselves as The Powerpuff Girls, Townsville's superheroes. Hey look, they found a use for the hearts after getting rid of the Narrator! Bubbles adds that they are not to be confused with Townsville's Super Gyros. We get an advertisement for those gyros, because we needed a scene where Blossom "noms" a gyro in an off-model way. Much more needed than actual superheroic acts.
Abs Man isn’t swayed by this, and starts to mock them for being so tiny. I will say this is not going to be a total ripoff of Members Only. One will wish this was ripping off Members Only.
Abs Man: (practically bullying these poor little girls) Who are your villains, hmmm? Insects?
It's a good thing Buttercup initially likes this guy; the last time someone Buttercup never met did something similar, Buttercup destroyed an entire Renaissance Fair over it. Buttercup instead politely tries to correct him by saying they have real villains to fight. Before she can talk about that silly monkey with the silly hat, the pink fuzzball that actually cameos in this episode, and that shadow guy that whines about his toys, we get a gnat riding on a giant hairspray can.
Tumblr media
Specifically, the Gnat, who proclaims himself to be the Powerpuff Girls’ most notorious arch-nemesis. He even gives a flashback on his last encounter, where he was just a tiny gnat getting sprayed by the Professor. I may have problems with this episode, but this gnat isn't one of them. Sure, he seems to be only here to prove Abs Man correct, but they sure make him ham it up.
Another part of the reason is that Buttercup just swats him away into a airplane that happened to be flying by. After all the Monster Punch, Girls Down scenes, it’s so refreshing to see a Girl Punch, Monster Down instead. Despite her easy victory, Buttercup realizes that Abs Man was right: she is puny. Blossom tries to reassure her and offers her some of that soft cheese, but Buttercup made up her mind. She's going to a gym to become a beefcake, in her own words. And not just any gym...
Tumblr media
...JayDeep's Gym Jam! It's very fitting for something that could turn Buttercup into a monstrosity to have the name of one of the people behind that Buttercup muppet shot from the last episode. Don't think this name on the sign is just an one-off case of writer vanity, either.
Tumblr media
It’s also the name of this character of the week! The writers sure like to write in their co-workers, and I feel I should just stop there because it's not that bad here and the original did it too. JayDeep asks Buttercup why she wants to be welcomed to the Gym Jam, and Buttercup practically blurts out one of the lessons of this episode.
Buttercup: Don't say peer pressure, don't say peer pressure...PEER PRESSURE! I mean...fitness! Totally fitness.
A week passes by, as told by a title card that says "one week l8r". Is txt talk even relevant in the age of phones with touchscreens? One would think they would know this when they gave the Powerpuff Girls smartphones. Blossom and Bubbles, chalk this up as another episode where two Reboot Puffs are playing the same role, open the refrigerator to find nothing but Muscle Maximizer.
I knew from this scene that I was going to see something horrific. Maybe it won't be that bad?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No, that's not my rating for this episode, that was a representation of my face. Because somebody really wanted it, we get an overly buff and swole Powerpuff Girl, complete with stubby "hands" that make her look like an overly muscled chicken. We even get gratuitous use of photos to show off these muscles, which I won't screenshot because I don't hate you that much. I guess it's supposed to be disgusting, but intentional disgust is still disgust.
Blossom tells her she's taking this too far, but Buttercup assures her that this is what she is now. Blossom tells Buttercup that she doesn't have to look like a superhero to be one, a general lesson the Powerpuff Girls prove by existing, at least in the original. Buttercup just walks away, busting through the door as if the Powerpuff Girls busting through walls wasn't a normal aspect. I guess it isn't in this reboot.
Also not a normal aspect of this reboot, Blossom gets a call from the Mayor, telling her that the Gnat is doing the same evil deed downtown. Bubbles asks if they should get Buttercup, but as the strong independent superheroines that they are, Blossom decides they don't need Buttercup. Well, except for those last six times the most boyish one had to save the two girly ones. I counted.
Tumblr media
The Gnat is back, and he's doing the same plan he was trying to do earlier. Of course, he was thwarted by a single Powerpuff Girl, and now there's two of them to take him on. Unfortunately, by the time they get there, Townsville is covered with clouds of hairspray. You would think something would come of this, like a funny hairstyle joke, but it doesn't. It does lead to Blossom and Bubbles getting lost in it, making them targets for the Gnat's other plan.
With his sinister knowledge on where to get giant terrariums and how to lift and drop them, The Gnat drops a giant terrarium on Blossom and Bubbles. As revenge for humans feeding gnats to their pets, he intends to feed the Powerpuff Girls to a pet of his very own: a giant horned frog. Blossom and Bubbles narrowly avoid his tongue and charge towards it to "make this frog croak", but, guess what?
Tumblr media
Frog inflate, girls down. Womp, womp. Buttercup easily dispatches monsters, while Blossom and Bubbles are victims. Okay, even in the original, they had trouble with a giant fish balloon monster. Granted, that fish balloon was about 10 times bigger.
I would also ask how these girls can smash through walls, but not through this glass. There's no mention that this is a special superhero-proof terrarium. Maybe they’re afraid of smashing through the glass because they could get stabbed by giant glass shards! Huh, if only there was a way for them to make some sort of giant protective barrier around them. An aura, if you will.
Tumblr media
The overly-muscled Buttercup shows up to save those poor little girly ones with her strong muscles, which the Gnat is completely disgusted by. Another reason to like this guy! Buttercup treats this as him being jealous, and tries to fly towards him for another beatdown. Unfortunately, Buttercup falls into a problem. Literally, she falls because can't fly with her overly-large muscles. I shouldn't get into the science of little girls flying, because there isn't one, but I feel like they're just trying to find excuses to make those muscles not work.
Rolling her overly "swole" body, apparently heavier than buildings full of people, to the gym, and she cries out to her idol of the week. The short answer, he doesn't help at all. The long answer is actually pretty clever. Her idol betraying her, she finally realizes she's just not built to be a muscle-woman, but she was good the way she was.
JayDeep, infuriated that Buttercup used his building for selfish purposes but easily forgiving her, offers a new "fitness" plan with his brother Sundeep. He represents the "Jam" portion of the Gym Jam, and they meant the preserves. Not the ''Come on and slam! And welcome to the jam!'' kind.
Tumblr media
He’s going to try to make Buttercup lose all of that muscle mass by making her lazy. We get a workout montage showing some sort of workout equipment, which immediately pans to Sundeep and the overgrown chicken sitting down and watching television. How does this new way of working out help out Buttercup? Well, I'm sure somebody was happy to see this.

Buttercup: Nooow I can saaaave my siiiisteeeeers! (slumps)
Overly large muscles, inflation, and now weight gain. I guess they realized this reboot wouldn’t be popular enough for that kind of “special interest” art, so they decided to do it themselves.
JayDeep, the character, not the storyboarder, is insulted by this conversion of muscle fat to regular fat, and forces Buttercup to do some cardio. Persumably, with no weight lifting. Meanwhile, how are Blossom and Bubbles doing?
Tumblr media
Ah, yes, the classic "if only Buttercup can save us" scene! I would say they took the "Buttercup, she's the toughest fighter" line too seriously if they were still using that ending theme song. Maybe it's a good thing Bis has nothing to do with this. This reboot doesn't deserve them.
Tumblr media
Buttercup shows up, all back to normal outside of a spray tan and some flabby arms. She is a superheroine, maybe her metabolism is super, too. Gnat gets punched into the aquarium’s walls, spurting out the closest thing to blood they ever shown outside of those unicorn hearts in The Last Donnycorn. Buttercup then lifts the terrarium to let her sisters out, and The Gnat gets eaten by his own frog in an ironic death. Why couldn't Blossom and Bubbles lift it from the inside? Pineapples.
The episode ends with Buttercup opening her mouth super wide and eating Blossom and Bubbles whole. With the way this episode went, would it even be surprising if that wasn't a total lie?
Does the title fit?
The title promised us Buttercup with muscles, and it gave us that.
How does it stack up?
It’s a bad idea done as well as they could. I said the same about Wrinklegruff Gals, but it's more true here. I certainly want to see more of The Gnat, and I can't exactly say they were not creative. The characters of the week aren't too horrible, either.
However, outside of the muscles, this is just another "Buttercup does something wrong, the other Powerpuff Girls get into trouble, and Buttercup has to learn the lesson to save them" episode. The reboot has done far better episodes with that concept, and they should have done something new instead. It's not the worst, but it's no Man Up 2.
Tumblr media
Next week, it's a special Father's Day episode about the Professor. Hopefully it's more Fashion Forward and The Big Sleep than any of his other major appearances.

“A Happy Beginning Now is Ours” OUAT 6X20 Thoughts
Captain Swan is married! I repeat. Captain Swan is married! This episode combined three of my favorite things: Once Upon a Time, Captain Swan, and music/musicals. I loved this episode. Just loved it. It is definitely my favorite episode of season six and is either tied with the Season 3 finale for my favorite episode of all time or is in second place.
The first scene is of Young Emma, humming a song, which turns out to be the melody of Emma’s Theme. In the past, Snow made a wish that Emma would get her happy ending, which caused everyone to sing. The opening number, Powerful Magic is very fun, catchy, and oh-so-Disney. Josh’s strong vocals paired wonderfully with Ginny’s light soprano. He did out sing her, but I expected that since he spent about a decade on the West End. The first scene in Storybrooke was with Emma and Snow in the Swan-Jones house. Emma was trying to pick a wedding dress, but was unable to pick. That is until Snow said the first curse brought over her own wedding dress and asked if Emma wanted to wear it. When Emma picked up the dress, it turned black and The Black Fairy appeared. A lovely moment ruined by a villain saying stuff about the Final Battle.
Emma, Snow, Regina, and Zelena go the the clock tower and discover the Black Fairy’s curse, which is set to go off at six, during Emma and Killian’s wedding. Back in the Enchanted Forest, The Evil Queen was of course, furious that she had to sing, which is seen in The Queen sings. I enjoyed this song the least, but the moments where The Mirror, the dwarves, Gepetto, Granny, and Snowing sang were good. Then Regina decided to allow her self to sing and sang a Rocky Horror-esque solo. Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance, while having a catchy melody fails slightly in the vocal department as Lana’s singing isn’t the best. She can carry a tune (as evident in A Happy Beginning), but a hard-rock song was probably not the best choice for her singing ability.
After this, Emma then goes to see Killian to tell him what Gold did and we get a moment between them where Killian is his superstitious self. Emma says she has to fight the final battle alone, which is true, unfortunately, but Killian wanted her to let him help. She tells him she loves him and then leaves. Before this, we got a nice Captain Charming scene involving a white jacket which is definitely not Killian-wears-black-leather Jones’ type. The next scene involved the absolutely phenomenal solo, Revenge is Gonna Be Mine, sung by Colin O’Donoghue as Captain Hook/Killian Jones. This song is a Queen-style one, and Colin’s tenor voice can handle it. And he handled it perfectly. The song is catchy and rousing and involves plenty of table-jumping, rum-drinking, and sword-swing. The perfect song for the perfect pirate. Then in the present day, Killian shoots a blowdart infused with dream shade into Gold’s neck for endangering his fiancée and says he’s going to skin himself a crocodile. Guess Hook vs Rumplestiltskin is back.
Henry then finds the tape of Emma singing as a child, but Emma doesn’t want to listen to it because it reminds her of being alone. Cue sad face. The next song is Zelena’s solo. Wicked Always Wins is a Wicked-inspired song with soaring vocals. I was surprised at how well Bex could sing. Her voice is lovely. While the melody and feel of the music as a whole serious, the lyrics were actually quite funny as Zelena sang about her jealousy. During the song, Zelena sends a magic-box to Regina’s vault so she can use Regina’s demise to her advantage. Back in Storybrooke, Gold steals the part of the curse that R and Z isolated, the time-stopping part. He uses this potion on Emma’s family and friends because he is the worst. Emma then goes to confront the BF and the BF reminds her what it’s like to be alone because of course she has a recording of Em singing as a child in her crystal ball. Henry then gives Emma a pep talk, which she takes in the wrong direction and decides she give the Black Fairy her heart. Emma, honey, don’t do this.
The next song is The Charmings vs The Evil Queen. This song is basically a mash-up of Powerful Magic and Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance. Nothing new and the different styles of the songs made it a bit difficult to listen to. It ended with Regina sucking the music out of Snowing with Zelena’s box. The Blue Fairy visits Snowing and tells them that she granted the wish and that it was meant for Emma so she could face the Final Battle and not be alone. Henry discovers the page of this scene and realizes what it means. Emma has decided to give the Black Fairy her heart, but Fiona can not kill her because her heart is stronger than that. Henry shows the page to Emma and she realizes that the song she sang as a child was placed there by her parents. Emma’s Theme is a hauntingly, beautiful tune about Emma’s journey from orphan to a Savior who is surrounded by the people she loves and who love her. Jennifer Morrison’s voice is definitely my favorite out of the entire cast. It is very strong and powerful and at the same time soft and light. Her singing flows beautifully from one note to the next. I really, really wish this song was longer. Emma’s song is able to unfreeze her people. Snow wonders how she was able to do it. Emma tells her what happened, which confuses her. Emma tells her it doesn’t really matter, which I was slightly disappointed by because I wanted to see her (and everyone else's) reaction to be being part of a musical. Emma then runs into Killian’s arms and the scene transitions to... THE WEDDING!
Emma and Killian’s vows were simple. Killian’s involved giving up his revenge because he fell in love with Emma and because a heart full of love is better than a heart filled with vengeance. Cue a rendition of A Heart Full of Love from Les Mis. Emma’s vows were about how Killian made her believe in True Love and the possibility of a happy ending. Or as Emma put it, a happy beginning. And then they kissed for the first time as husband and wife. Yay! The best part about this kiss was when Killian swung her around and down. I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t  actually kiss while he was dipping her, but that doesn’t matter to much because Captain Swan is married!!! Ahem.
After they kiss, they begin to dance and Emma starts to sing A Happy Beginning. Jen and Colin’s voices blend together beautifully and I desperately wish their duet was longer. After the verse of Snowing, Regina/Zelena, and Henry, everyone else joins in for a rousing chorus repeated multiple times with plenty of dancing and fun. I loved this song, but it of course had to end on “Warning! Curse is here!” notes. The Black Fairy’s curse (which takes the form of snake-like black clouds), begins to take everyone away, one by one. The last people we saw were the newlyweds. Killian asks where Emma thought the curse was taking them, to which Emma says that it doesn’t matter, because they’ll win. To recap: most of the songs were phenomenal and the cast can sing. Emma and Killian are married. The Black fairy cast her curse. The plot was Emma-focused. Now, was I bothered by the fact that they retconned Snowing meeting Killian and everyone forgetting that they sang? No, because I’m not bothered by things like that. On to the Final Battle (which looks really good based on the promo).

Sundance Experience
Beginning with a not-so-pleasant plane ride, meaning I would have to get up at four-thirty in the morning, the Sundance experience requires a fair amount of hassle, but is ultimately worth it. In addition to this, arriving at the box office, we were met with an extraordinary line in order to get our Ignite tickets, but the traditional line was actually fairly short, and the process of buying tickets is rush from not quite being able to know what you’re getting into. At first I ended up buying about five tickets: Three Identical Strangers, Revenge, The Happy Prince, King in the Wilderness, and The Queen of Fear. While Three Identical Strangers was one of the better but I found myself very disappointed by Revenge’s over-the top gore, poor writing, and bad acting. I felt like the film was a bad representation of how to do an action film, and my second least favorite film (only after the the stale acting and awkward film-making of Lizzie) my Sundance experience was off to a bad start. However after the next day (on which I had no screenings) I realized I would prefer to spend more time viewing the unique films of the festival. The next day I went to see the two Slamdance films, a smaller venue that shows independent films that couldn’t get into Sundance. The experience was incredibly easy compared to the lines and frequently selling out films at Sundance (you pretty much just show up, buy tickets, and go in), but the two films I viewed were fairly plain, slow moving films, that made it seem as though there wasn’t as much variety as with Sundance. As a result I decided to buy more Sundance tickets instead of Slamdance. I bought five more tickets: Minding the Gap, Burden, Deep Astronomy and the Romantic Sciences, and two more tickets for the second half (On top of the eight I had already bought). Now, if I’m being honest, up until this point most of the films I had seen were only mediocre. The first film that really impressed me was Burden, a moving film about racial tensions and how tolerance goes both ways, but the film that really got me was the midnight screening of Assassination Nation. This adrenaline rush of a film was excellent relief from the typical talking heads movies of many of these films and with excellent writing, well developed characters and social satire it is an excellent representation of how to do an action movie right; giving it its place as my favorite film. All-in-all the Sundance experience is a lot of effort, but is ultimately a unique and exciting experience that just may allow you to see some amazing films before anyone else.
