Computer Saga Update
Hope to have next story comic Monday. I might temporarily adjust the schedule from there.
Many, MANY thanks to everyone for your support, you're why I'm able to make this comic, and replace the computer for making it so quickly.
That's the important information, but here's some additional details:
The switch to a new computer has necessitated some changes in software. In particular, I've been using CS6 Adobe software for quite some time, but Adobe has said "no" to my putting it on a new computer, so now I have to use the latest subscription-based version.
This isn't the end of the world, I knew it would happen eventually (or I'd somehow find time to learn different software), but I can't work as quickly adapting to the new version, and there's some stress involved.
For example, I nearly had an actual emotional breakdown when I thought they'd removed the live paint tool. It's still there, just not easily accessible by default. I genuinely don't know how I'd make upcoming comics if it were actually gone. It's possible the style would've just suddenly shifted.
Anyway, the further along I get, the more stress is decreasing, but I wound up a MESS today, and I'm going to bed.
(Seriously, thank you all for supporting the comic.)

Hello it's me with another very naive computer question!
One of the really common complaints you see about modern software (from Adobe, Microsoft, etc.) is the move from the single-purchase model to a subscription-based model. While I understand that people are upset about paying more money over time, this also feels like the only viable option for shipping products that work with modern OSes, especially Windows (I don't have any experience with MacOS). Windows pretty regularly updates, and if you want your product to continue to work, you have to continue paying your engineers to maintain compatibility through time.
Obviously I understand that there are lots of FOSS options out there, but for the companies that are built on making money from these sorts of software products, I don't see another way. Am I way off the mark here?
This is a really good question. I don't have a great answer, but the model I have in my head is that "traditional software distribution" is partially an artifact of an era where companies were starting to use computers but internet use was still spotty so providing support for software was just a very different ballgame. A lot of what I'm saying here is not like. Fact as much as it is my understanding of The Software Business from the side of someone who is a little involved in that but mostly not in that.
(This is mostly about "business software", that is to say, accounting packages, creative suites, design packages, modelling tools, etc. This model does not explain like. Spotify. But that's much easier to explain.)
You're not wrong that the subscription model really make sense given modern software development, where patches come out continuously and you get upgraded to the latest version every time something changes, but there has been a significant change in how software is developed and sold that makes it noticeably different. I think that the cause of this is mostly because it's finally practical to do contract-style deals with hundreds of thousands of customers instead of doing one-off sales like we used to do.
In the Traditional model you charge a pretty sizeable upfront cost for a specific version of the software, you buy Windows XP or Jasc Paint Shop 7 or whatever and then you get That Version until we release The Next Version, plus a couple years of security and support. When the next version hits, we stop adding any new features to your version, and when that hits end of life, you maybe get offered a discount to buy licensing for the latest version, or you drop out of support.
Traditional software with robust support typically costs an awful lot, Photoshop CS2 was $600 new in 2005, or $150 to upgrade from CS, because you're paying for support and engineering time in advance. A current subscription for just Photoshop is $20/mo, and that's after twenty years of inflation. Photoshop is also cheap, a seat for something like SolidWorks 2003 could probably have run you $3000-4000 easy. I can't even give you a better guess there because SolidWorks still doesn't sell single commercial licenses online, you have to talk to their salespeople.
The interesting thing to me about Traditional pricing was that I think it was typically offered to medium to small businesses or individuals, because it's an easy way to sell to smaller customers, especially if it's the 90's and you're maybe selling your software through an intermediary reseller who works with local businesses or just a store shelf.
Independent software resellers were a big business back in the day, they served as a go-between for the software company and smaller businesses, they sold prepared packages in a few sizes and handled the personal relationship of phoning you up and saying "Hey there's a patch for your accounting software so that it doesn't crash when someone's surname is Zero, we'll send you a floppy disk in the mail with some instructions on how to install it." Versioned standard releases are a thing you can put in a box and give to resellers along with a spec sheet and sales talking points. This business still exists but it's much smaller than it once was, it's largely gone upmarket.
If you were bigger, say, if you were a publishing house that needed fifty seats of editing software you'd probably call the sales department of Jasc or whoever and get a volume deal along with a support contract.
Nowadays why would you bother going through resellers and making this whole complicated pricing model when you could just sell subscriptions with well-established e-commerce tools. You can make contract support deals with individuals at scale, all online, without hiring thousands of salespeople. You can even provide varying support levels at multiple cost brackets directly, so you don't need to cultivate a direct business relationship with all your customers in order to meet their needs. Your salespeople handle the really big megacorp and government deals and you let everyone else administer themselves.
It also makes development easier. You can also deploy patches over the net, you just do it in software. You can obsolete older versions faster, since you can make sure most people are using the latest version, and significantly cut down on engineering time spent backporting fixes to older versions. I think a lot of this is straightforwardly desirable on most software.
Now, there are still packages sold by the version, and there are even companies selling eternal licenses.
Fruity Loops Studio is still a "Buy once forever" type deal.
MatLab can be purchased as a subscription or as a perpetual one-version license.
Windows is still sold like this, but also direct to customer sales of Windows are minimal, Windows is primarily sold to OEM's who preinstall it on everything.
But it's a dying breed, your bigger customers are going to want current support and while there are industries where people want to hang around on older versions, for a lot of software your customer wants the latest thing with all the features and patches, and they'd rather hold on to their money until later using a subscription rather than spend it all upfront. Businesses love subscriptions, they make accounts books balance well, they're the opposite of debt.
Personal/private users who might just want the features of Photoshop CS2 and that's fine forever don't matter to you. They're not your major customers. This kind of person is not a person who your business cares to service, so you don't really care if you annoy them.
Even in the Open Source business world, subscriptions are how the money is made, just on support rather than for the software itself. You can jump through relatively few hoops to run Ubuntu Enterprise or SUSE Enterprise Linux on your own systems for free, but really there's not much benefit to that unless you pay for the dedicated support subscription.
In many ways I think a lot of things have changed in this way, I have a whole thing about the way medium-scale industrial manufacturing has changed in the past thirty years somewhere around here.
While there are valid reasons you might want to buy a single snapshot of some software and run that forever, the reality is that that's a pretty rare desire, or at least that desire is rarely backed by money. If you want to do that you either need access to the source code so that you can maintain it yourself, or you need to strike a deal with someone who will, or it needs to be software so limited that it (and the system it runs on!) never need updates. Very few useful programs are this simple. As a result subscription models make sense, but until recently you couldn't really sell a subscription to small businesses and individuals. Changes in e-commerce and banking have enabled such contracts to be made, and hey presto, it's subscription world.

Hiya tysm!! I currently use a number of programs depending on what method I wanna work with or what I wanna make. I'll list and explain the ones I use or used for my illustration work.
Clip Studio Paint EX - Main choice for illustration and hand-drawn animation. I enjoy painting and sketching in Clip Studio more than Photoshop personally. The animation feature is pretty neat and I like using it mainly for the clean up process.
Adobe Photoshop - Illustration and hand-drawn animation. There are a few features Photoshop has that Clip Studio doesn't have that I personally need to make exporting multiple images faster and ready for animating. It can also make importing stuff from it faster and easier into After Effects.
Adobe Illustrator - Vector Illustration and 2D rig asset creation. If I wanna make quick clean art or I know I'll need multiple sizes of the same art, I use Illustrator. Creating vector art is a bit of a learning curve for beginner digital artists, so I wouldn't jump into it until you have an understanding on non-vector art programs.
Procreate - I don't turn on my iPad as much anymore, but it's an amazing and affordable art app. If you can afford an iPad and an Apple Pencil, definitely give it a try.
Gimp - I used to use Gimp back in high school since I had no way of purchasing any art program at the time, but I wanted something similar to Photoshop after learning how to use it in school. It's a decent free and open-source art program that served it's purpose for me.
MS Paint - Literally started out digital art and animation with Windows 7 MS Paint and a wireless mouse back when I was around 10yo. But the upcoming latest MS Paint update includes layer and transparency support for the Windows 11 version. Honestly I'd give that a try if you use a PC and have 11 on it!

So let's get into the nitty-gritty technical details behind my latest project, the National Blue Trail round-trip search application available here:
This project has been fun with me learning a lot about plenty of technologies, including QGis, PostGIS, pgRouting, GTFS files, OpenLayers, OpenTripPlanner and Vita.
So let's start!
In most of my previous GIS projects I have always used custom made tools written in ruby or Javascript and never really tried any of the "proper" GIS tools, so it was a good opportunity for me to learn a bit of QGIS. I hoped I could do most of the work there, but soon realized it's not fully up to the job, so I had to extend the bits to other tools at the end. For most purposes I used QGis to import data from various sources, and export the results to PostGIS, then do the calculations in PostGIS, re-import the results from there and save them into GeoJSON. For this workflow QGIS was pretty okay to use. I also managed to use it for some minor editing as well.
I did really hope I could avoid PostGIS, and do all of the calculation inside QGIS, but its routing engine is both slow, and simply not designed for multiple uses. For example after importing the map of Hungary and trying to find a single route between two points it took around 10-15 minutes just to build the routing map, then a couple seconds to calculate the actual route. There is no way to save the routing map (at least I didn't find any that did not involve coding in Python), so if you want to calculate the routes again you had to wait the 10-15 minute of tree building once more. Since I had to calculate around 20.000 of routes at least, I quickly realized this will simply never work out.
I did find the QNEAT3 plugin which did allow one to do a N-M search of routes between two set of points, but it was both too slow and very disk space intense. It also calculated many more routes than needed, as you couldn't add a filter. In the end it took 23 hours for it to calculate the routes AND it created a temporary file of more than 300Gb in the process. After realizing I made a mistake in the input files I quickly realized I won't wait this time again and started looking at PostGIS + pgRouting instead.
Before we move over to them two very important lessons I learned in QGIS:
There is no auto-save. If you forget to save and then 2 hours later QGIS crashes for no reason then you have to restart your work
Any layer that is in editing mode is not getting saved when you press the save button. So even if you don't forget to save by pressing CTRL/CMD+S every 5 seconds like every sane person who used Adobe products ever in their lifetimes does, you will still lose your work two hours later when QGIS finally crashes if you did not exit the editing mode for all of the layers

So let's move on to PostGIS.
It's been a while since I last used PostGIS - it was around 11 years ago for a web based object tracking project - but it was fairly easy to get it going. Importing data from QGIS (more specifically pushing data from QGIS to PostGIS) was pretty convenient, so I could fill up the tables with the relevant points and lines quite easily. The only hard part was getting pgRouting working, mostly because there aren't any good tutorials on how to import OpenStreetMap data into it. I did find a blog post that used a freeware (not open source) tool to do this, and another project that seems dead (last update was 2 years ago) but at least it was open source, and actually worked well. You can find the scripts I used on the GitHub page's README.
Using pgRouting was okay - documentation is a bit hard to read as it's more of a specification, but I did find the relevant examples useful. It also supports both A* search (which is much quicker than plain Dijsktra on a 2D map) and searching between N*M points with a filter applied, so I hoped it will be quicker than QGIS, but I never expected how quick it was - it only took 5 seconds to calculate the same results it took QGIS 23 hours and 300GB of disk space! Next time I have a GIS project I'm fairly certain I will not shy away from using PostGIS for calculations.
There were a couple of hard parts though, most notably:
ST_Collect will nicely merge multiple lines into one single large line, but the direction of that line looked a bit random, so I had to add some extra code to fix it later.
ST_Split was similarly quite okay to use (although it took me a while to realize I needed to use ST_Snap with proper settings for it to work), but yet again the ordering of the segments were off a slight bit, but I was too lazy to fix it with code - I just updated the wrong values by hand.

The next project I had never used in the past was OpenTripPlanner. I did have a public transport project a couple years ago but back then tools like this and the required public databases were very hard to come by, so I opted into using Google's APIs (with a hard limit to make sure this will never be more expensive than the free tier Google gives you each month), but I have again been blown away how good tooling has become since then. GTFS files are readily available for a lot of sources (although not all - MAV, the Hungarian Railways has it for example behind a registration paywall, and although English bus companies are required to publish this by law - and do it nicely, Scottish ones don't always do it, and even if they do finding them is not always easy. Looks to be something I should push within my party of choice as my foray into politics)
There are a couple of caveats with OpenTripPlanner, the main one being it does require a lot of RAM. Getting the Hungarian map, and the timetables from both Volánbusz (the state operated coach company) and BKK (the public transport company of Budapest) required around 13GB of RAM - and by default docker was only given 8, so it did crash at first with me not realizing why.
The interface of OpenTripPlanner is also a bit too simple, and it was fairly hard for me to stop it from giving me trips that only involve walking - I deliberately wanted it to only search between bus stops involving actual bus travel as the walking part I had already done using PostGIS. I did however check if I could have used OpenTripPlanner for that part as well, and while it did work somewhat it didn't really give optimal results for my use case, so I was relieved the time I spend in QGIS - PostGIS was not in vain.
The API of OpenTripPlanner was pretty neat though, it did mimic Google's route searching API as much as possible which I used in the past so parsing the results was quite easy.

Once we had all of the data ready, the final bit was converting it to something I can use in JavaScript. For this I used my trusted scripting language I use for such occasion for almost 20 years now: ruby. The only interesting part here was the use of Encoded Polylines (which is Google's standard of sending LineString information over inside JSON files), but yet again I did find enough tools to handle this pretty obscure format.

Final part was the display. While I usually used Leaflet in the past I really wanted to try OpenLayers, I had another project I had not yet finished where Leaflet was simply too slow for the data, and I had a very quick look at OpenLayers and saw it could display it with an acceptable performance, so I believed it might be a good opportunity for me to learn it. It was pretty okay, although I do believe transparent layers seem to be pretty slow under it without WebGL rendering, and I could not get WebGL working as it is still only available as a preview with no documentation (and the interface has changed completely in the last 2 months since I last looked at it). In any case OpenLayers was still a good choice - it had built in support for Encoded Polylines, GPX Export, Feature selection by hovering, and a nice styling API. It also required me to use Vita for building the application, which was a nice addition to my pretty lacking knowledge of JavaScript frameworks.

All in all this was a fun project, I definitely learned a lot I can use in the future. Seeing how well OpenTripPlanner is, and not just for public transport but also walking and cycling, did give me a couple new ideas I could not envision in the past because I could only do it with Google's Routing API which would have been prohibitively expensive. Now I just need to start lobbying for the Bus Services Act 2017 or something similar to be implemented in Scotland as well

Ahhhh.... I will say, this still pretty much lines up with what i said though--you only have to get the subscription if you want new features. It doesn't mean you have to stop using the program you already paid for and own. Yeah, it's still pretty scuzzy--not denying that. but i also don't think it's as dire as a lot of people initially thought...? If you're used to how the program works now and like it, then... what's really changed?
I guess it remains to be seen how exactly things will go down. there was a huge backlash, and it may make clip rethink some of their decisions. one can hope, right? >>;
but, i'm one to use a program until it just cannot function anymore--it's not a big deal if my version of clip doesn't get the latest features because i was used to a version of photoshop from 2013. that thing was absolutely not receiving updates, trust me. XD it didn't stop me from making art though, because it still did what i needed it to do.
so maybe this is a somewhat bigger deal to other folks than it is to me :"D

Hi everyone! This is pretty much a recap of my progress update I said in class yesterday!
What's been happening over the past 2 weeks?
Over the past two weeks, I've been creating content for my Instagram page. I feel proud to say that I'm done with the production phase of my project. All six weeks of looking at different cultures have been posted on my Instagram account! The last two weeks focused on boba and Asian makeup culture.
What's coming up for the next 2 weeks?
During the next 2 weeks, I plan on posting one last video to my Instagram page as a reflection on my experiences doing this project. I will also be analyzing the interactions that I received on my Instagrams within the reflection video. In addition to the video, I will be working on the senior bio form and media asset folder.
Hiccups/Hurdles/AHA Moments
Since I have a good routine going on with my posting schedule for my Instagram, I didn't really have any issues. I feel like the only issue would have been making time for researching, creating, and editing the content on my page along with my schedule and other classes. But, it has really helped me on my time management skills and it forced me to not procrastinate on my work.

I seriously feel like this semester went by incredibly fast. I can't believe we only have a little less than a month left until summer break. I hope everyone is doing okay on their progress! We're almost there yay!!

and of course I am willing!! probably a no brainer but I use adobe photoshop to make all my gifs - and I have the latest version (bc my clown ass pays for a subscription so I always have access to new updates when they come out!)
I don't know how much explaining you need here (and apologies if I'm explaining something you already knew) but just to be safe I'll do the basics of how I make these and then specifically how I did the ones in the example you linked :)
first I load all my frames into photoshop (obviously lol)

then I let it do its magic by selecting the first frame and clicking 'remove background' >:)

again, I have the latest version of the program and older versions might not have this function, but this is how I do it!
it should then look something like this:

a layer mask has now been applied to the frame - this way you can go in with a brush and make adjustments if needed!
repeat this step for all the frames in your gif! and then proceed as you normally would - you could leave the background blank (although idk why you would haha) or...idk, just spitballing here, make scully be in the louvre maybe:

what I did in the gifset you linked is a bit different; I made another version of the gif, without cutting any of the background, and layered that below:

this probably goes without saying, but make sure to line them up right so you don't accidentally end up with something like this

(what I do is, I set the top gif's opacity to 50% and zoom in real close and then align them)
and then you can add a layer mask to the bottom gif and erase any part that you want! you can add another background or leave it blank, whatever you want :) here are some examples:

(for this last one just imagine the yellow bits are other gifs in a grid sort of layout like your linked example, I assume you know how to do this?)
and that's it! :)
I mentioned this already but it's important to note that this doesn't work on every scene. it helps if the background is out of focus and when there is clear contrast between the person and their surroundings. in this example, it honestly does not work super well; you can see that there are bits of scully's hair that are kind of floating around where they really shouldn't. but usually, by colouring smartly and maybe going in with a brush to erase some bits that look truly out of place, you can make it work.

God damn it. I’m so sick and tired of people and how they’re reacting to AI. Just read that Clip Studio was going to implement tools around it in their latest update. And they backed out because of user complaints. Like. This. This was it. This was the whole fucking point and the promising future of AI and the software around it. Yeah, it’s in the works still. It’s still learning. But having better tools in fucking art software for artists to create more freely and better keep up with demand in the market and to fucking derive inspiration from by messing around with like, that was the whole fucking promising potential and it’s going to be shut the fuck down because people are moody fucking babies crying about every little thing before it even has a chance to get there. I hope Adobe finds a way to implement tools with similar capabilities and has the balls to tell people to suck it up because that shit would be fucking worth it. You’re all being ignorant hypocrites about how shit works in the first place. Honestly reading about this and then seeing the barrage of No AI banners being posted everywhere just fucking made me lose so much hope in humanity again. 
EDIT: I posted this in 2022 and I want to make some hard clarifications here. This is referencing EXPLICABLY using AI IN SOFTWARE with tools. A thing that ISN’T new and is why I was saying people were being hypocritical about it, because AI is used with existing tools already and that is why THEY WORK. Photoshop is releasing a tool in beta right now known as Generative Fill and this is EXACTLY the type of thing I wanted implemented with this newer technology, where you are able to generate ref directly into the program for you TO USE AS REFERENCE and where you can expand the canvas of YOUR OWN WORKS if you wanted to and where you can make corrections and fill in gaps better than the already existing content-aware fill can, using your OWN works as the reference source and copyright-free trained AI. This post was disappointment directed specifically at Clip Studio’s userbase KEEPING clip studio’s software BEHIND Photoshop’s in terms of functionality and tool set because they don’t realize that AI MAKES YOUR TOOLS WORK BETTER and were over-reacting about the generators in general, like everyone else. Again, the generators had nothing to do with this post originally and isn’t the AI I was talking about. As far as AI art generators go, I wasn’t defending those and I wasn’t saying that the millions of artists and photographers getting shafted by having their shit getting stolen to train them without their consent, or any of that, was in the right. AI is a thing. It has been a thing for a very long time and it has a STRONG place AS A THING in software and in enabling tools offered by the software to function. Generators and the like, have only been a thing for a while now. 
Personally, I still stand semi-neutral on them. I don’t see the point in faulting them or being mad at them or the people who made them for doing what they were made to do, just because corporations are greedy assholes or douche bags already exist that are going to abuse and exploit them and shit on others. In terms of something that was created to do a very specific thing on the tech-side of things, they achieved that purpose and they also helped advance understanding and new ways of machine-based learning. The fact they do exactly what they were designed to do, and do it WELL, is awesome. Even if their means of getting there, weren’t. And even if how people are using them, is shitty. People have ALWAYS been assholes and ruined good things though. The end result of their generations after going through the process of referencing, forgetting, and then remembering, so to speak, though trained on very obvious copyrighted sources, aren’t really doing anything any living artist doesn’t already do when making their own works, especially in the field of still life art or photo studies they would make and post that are obvious copies of other things that already exist. If it is a still-life or study it SHOULD be mentioned and ref SHOULD be given to the original though, and the fact that ref can’t be given to any of the creations that AI is coming up with, is kind of shit. WHY none of the copyright claims have had any real legal weight so far IS because its generations aren’t exact duplicates though and are things its created on its own as an amalgamation of different referenced sources. The same copyright laws that protect artists are protecting AI generations the same way because the results aren’t exact duplicates and the process isn’t that different. For the time being. On the other hand it’s obvious it’s the AI that is making it, and not the people posting AI “art” with a name attached claiming credit or claiming to be artists out of nowhere. And that is also being recognized at the moment and is also why “AI artists” can’t copyright any of their AI-made “art”. And earlier on why others were not able to copyright ideas or other things AI came up with. Because they’re NOT the ones making it. It’s the generators that were trained on how to make art and are producing the results based off of word prompts. Not the “artist/poster” typing in what they want the AI to make for them. Not being able to copyright things you didn’t make has always been a thing, and recognizing that the generators are the things making the art, basically the same way as typing something in a google search engine and getting image results back, and not the posters, is also a good step in the right direction at the moment, especially since it makes companies looking to replace artists with AI unable to copyright it as well. Hopefully something will be done eventually that doesn’t bone every real artist, writer, and musician who HAS dedicated their entire lives to learning and mastering their skill. Because making art, music and writing ARE ALL SKILLS, meaning they have rules you follow, techniques you do to get results, and that you can learn them and BE TAUGHT which is why AI can be taught to follow these rules as well by feeding it shit that does and recognizing the patterns to reproduce.)
I still don’t personally hate “AI art” and on the contrary I still find it fascinating and a great source of reference being a derivative culmination of realism and a lot of master artists’ works. It has produced better reference material than I have ever seen around my entire 20 years being an artist BECAUSE if was trained off of TRAINED ARTISTS and TRAINED photographers and the like. As for the “AI artists” I have no problem with the ones who say it’s AI and who say which branch is making it (Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, DALL-E, Nijijourney, et cetera) and are having fun with it either. But this post isn’t about that so I’m not getting into that. The fact that some of them DO use the digital art tag, which hurts real digital artists’ chances of being found and seen in an already over saturated market is problematic. And the fact that you can generate multiple pieces in the matter of seconds and spam upload, feeding into the type of algorithmic-driven favoritism every social media platform switched over to when people started over-abusing the tag system, also hurts real artists and points out a very broken system. But again, that’s more on those types of people making those choices, and not the software at fault for doing what it was made to do, or the people who made the software learning how to make it do what they made it to do really. And lastly just to reiterate again, none of this had anything to do with my original post, which was calling out the fact that CLIP STUDIO had to go back on a decision to add new tools and software equal to Photoshop because its userbase was overreacting. Which I still firmly believe shouldn’t have even happened. And which I still believe just continues to hold it back in comparison to ever catching up.
