Blurb: Redbull racing welcomes a new doctor to the medical team but she the boss daughter and has caught the eye of max verstappen…

So this is the first part of my story hopefully you like it! It will be a bit of a slow burn!

I brace my knee braced on top of the hard plastic and give an almighty pull of the zipper and yet it still doesn’t budge. The sheer amount of clothes I’ve crammed in are refusing to be contained. “Come on you can do this!” I mutter, trying desperately to psych myself up. With a final burst of brute strength, the zipper eeks closed. “Fuck yes!!” I shout triumphantly settling down on top of the conquered suitcase. I survey my surrounding and settle further into my new position, realising that this is the last thing I have to do. My apartment is now fully packed up. However, the tranquillity of this moment is quickly interrupted by the sweat on my forehead making it's presence known, I grimace as the hem of my shirt comes up wet after swiping it across - Brisbane humidity is not something I will miss. After being here for five years for my medical degree, I'm ready to leave. To do something new. The first stop of that is heading to Bahrain –for the first Grand Prix of the year. Just as I'm about to stand and start wrangling this stupid suitcase out the door of my flat I hear the ear-piercing ring of my phone. Muttering out a curse at the stupid tone and swipe to answer not bothering to look at the name – I already know who it is based on the fucking ringtone.

“Hi Dad, what are you calling for” I query

“Y/N/N,” he starts with, using the shortened version of my name, “I can’t wait to see you again only a few more hours till you are in Bahrain with me! The start of many races together. I was just calling to check that you’re all sorted for the plane – it will be on the tarmac waiting for y-”

I do a double take at that comment and “Wait what! I've already booked my flight you didn’t need to send the plane down – I’ve told you it will make people look at me differently if they see me coming in on the company plane – they will think I only got the position because of you!” I screech, running my hand through my hair, this however, does nothing to sooth my frustration as my fingers get tangles in my mess of curls. Whilst my battle rages with my curls dad continues unperturbed, “Darling, you know that’s not true I had nothing to do with the selection process for Dr Trome.” I finally freed I continue exasperated “I know that dad, but other people don’t! it already hard enough people think I get handouts for being a girl and now people will say I only got it cause I'm RedBull’s Team principles daughter”

My father, Christian Horner sighs “I'm sorry darling, I just wanted to make your day easier – will you at least take the car from Bahrain airport to the track?”

I mull my options over – an Uber on Grand Prix week will cost me and arm and a leg, I know shit about Bahrain public transport and nor do I particularly want to wrangle my luggage around on it. Knowing my options are slim to none I agree to the car picking me up. Pleased with my answer my father finishes the call with a rushed I love you. `

I look down at my phone and my heart drops “FUCK” I scream. Frantically I grab everything do a curtesy sweep of my flat – it was really nothing to write home about – despite my very wealthy parents I am determined to make my own way – I want my successes to be mine, that everything I have earned in life is due to my own hard work not my last name, not my parents’ money but my skill. Jumping into a Taxi without a second to spare if I want to make my flight on time, I tell the driver to head to the terminal. An excruciating 25-minute drive later I arrive. With barely enough time to breath, I make it in time to check in. Finally, I have a chance to breath once seated on the plane – I'm always on edge in airports, the sheer mass if people, the lack of control it all sets me on edge. Checking my emails for the details of my position with Dr Trome.

Dear Y/N,

I hope you are traveling safe and once again congratulations on securing the position

Now that you are on your way, I just want to reaffirm what the expectation and the duties that this position involves – you are my one of back up team doctors you will be mainly responsible for the wellbeing of your assigned driver – this has yet to be determined but you will be informed once you have arrived in Bahrain.

This includes a whole multitude of aspects but as this is merely an internship with RedBull Racing’s Medical team you will NOT be responsible for making decision merely informing me of your proposed medical plan and talk through the rational with me, we will then decide the course of treatment – this experience is meant to challenge you showing you what life as a team doctor is like – the taxing pace of travel, athletes in their peak physical health and give your hands on training.

When you land at 4pm please come straight to conference room 140E for the run-down of operations.

Unable to contain my excitement a wide, slow smile spreads across my face. This is it. The start of a dream. Heading into medical school I was unsure of where I wanted to end up hospital rotations left me feeling drained and unfulfilled – I yearned for travel and excitement. My view of hospitals was probably warped due to the pandemic, but I was desperate not to suffer through that now. When the medical faculty at university had posted about an internship at RedBull racing I just couldn’t pass up, I dared not speak a word to my family about this – I knew my father would inject himself into the situation despite my protests and the obvious ethical violations. So, I quietly applied, not telling anyone and then 3 months ago after the whole interview process was complete, I got the internship. And that’s why I now find myself seated on a plane headed for Bahrain. I look out the window imagine the exciting possibilities that await me when this plane lands

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, the current time in Brisbane is 6pm the flight time to Bahrain is approximately 18hours and 45 minutes so settle back, get comfortable and enjoy your flight. We thank you for flying with us.

I settle into my seat and get ready for the start of my new life.

it’s been 2 days since the race and you left for bahrain in well 6 days. you’d been kind of lazing around. eating, sleeping, running, sleeping with theo, talking to grace, trying to actively not think about daniel. you’d nearly called him. daniel. late one night. after dropping theo to the airport. after you drunk too much and his words sept into your skull. you’d pressed the call button, watxhing it ring and then abruptly pressing the end button. you woke up the next morning to a hangover and a “why did you call me last night” message. you responded with a “sorry didn’t mean to” and he hadn’t responded, or said anything. until exactly….. 3 days later.

9:54pm (3 days before you leave for bahrain):

you wished you could ignore it, god, you wished you could, but you were already in the car, damming yourself for it, but still in the car.

you laugh at his texts, he knows you well apparently. you don’t respond, you’re driving. but somehow the drink texts are endearing, reminding you of the friendship you used to share, he used to text you to come pick him up when he’d had too much to drink and you’d pick him up and drop him home, usually spending the night huddled into him, his arm over your shoulder. the next morning you would both blame it on daniels drunkenness, deep down you both knew.

your car pulls up to the driveway and you drive up. he’s at the door before you even knock. drink in hand. he smiles immediately.

he ushers your inside like a pet and sit down on the couch. it’s a newer couch you notice, harder than the first one, you notice. he mumbles a little bit and then talks about getting you a drink, which he does and you do gladly accept it. but you don’t forget what he did on sunday. what he did in school.

“so why’d you want me to come over” you figure you might as well come out and say it. you’re glad he did

Michael Jackson paraded his friendships with boys and fans ignored it

Leaving Neverland, shown on Channel 4 over two nights, has delivered many shocking revelations about Michael Jackson’s grooming and alleged sexual abuse of two young fans who idolised him, and were terribly betrayed.

But one of the most shocking elements of the documentary has been the fact that the singer was going about his business in plain sight.

Time and again we saw Jackson surrounded by grown-ups in the company of both of his accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck. He was seen hopping out of limos, or going into hotels or onto private planes closely followed by a pre-pubescent boy — generally dressed identically to him.

Sometimes, he was holding hands with the child, at other times putting his arm around the boys’ shoulders. Both Robson and Safechuck were also brought out on stage by Jackson during his tours.

He could hardly have made his infatuation with them more public.

Safechuck met Jackson in 1987 when he was ten and was picked to appear with the singer in a Pepsi commercial. Jackson invited him along on the Bad tour with him the following year and they shared a hotel room while his parents slept down the hall. Safechuck says that he was being abused by the singer, and that it happened more than 100 times, often at Neverland.

Meanwhile, Australian dancer Wade Robson met Jackson in 1987 when he was five years old after he won a dance competition when the singer was touring Australia.

Jackson invited the youngster to join him on stage. Two years later, when the family were on holiday in America, they got in touch with Jackson and he invited them to spend time at Neverland.

Robson’s mother, father and sister went on a road trip to the Grand Canyon and at Jackson’s request Robson stayed in Neverland with Jackson, when, he says, the sexual abuse began. He was seven years old.

Yet the parents of these boys — who were rewarded with gifts of gold watches, cars, loans of money and even a home — did not see the alleged abuse.

As Safechuck’s mother Stephanie said: ‘For him to want to be our friend, we’re like, oh my God, how lucky are we? He flies you first class, he has a limo waiting at the airport, amazing! It’s a life of the rich and famous.’

Globally famous, Michael Jackson had no chance of coming or going unnoticed, of course.

But he made no effort to travel separately to ‘his boys’ — and Robson and Safechuck were not the only two.

As these pictures show, boys were taken around the world by Jackson, who was seen treating them to ‘anything you want’ shopping sprees in toy shops and theme parks.

Of course, some of those boys defend him still, and say nothing untoward ever happened.

But still the association was so brazen that it played into the ‘Wacko Jacko’ narrative.

Parents were told, not least by the singer himself, that he was at heart just a 12-year-old boy who loved cartoons and other children.

If they were capable of believing this then they could accept their boys being asked to ‘sleep over’ with the star in presidential suites in the best hotels around the world, while they were placed in a room at the other end of the residence, and still maintain a belief that whatever was going on was entirely innocent. At least five pre-pubescent boys were chosen to join Jackson on tour over a nine-year period.

But what, you may ask, of all of the adults — including those at his record label — who didn’t trouble to ask what exactly was going on? So far, there is only silence from Sony, his record label.

You also wonder if we will ever hear from the lawyers, who Wade Robson and James Safechuck said last night ran them through pretend questioning on the subject of what went on in the sleepovers, in order to protect Jackson. Jackson himself, we should remember, reacted with hysteria to the suggestion of paedophilia, as did his fans. He insisted on his ‘complete innocence’ and called the allegations ‘incredible, terrible’.

Jackson was, though, surely inviting disaster by associating closely and repeatedly with young male fans. One of these was Brett Barnes, who was seen coming through Heathrow with the singer in 1992 and hanging out with him in Euro Disney in 1993.

It was reported that he was Jackson’s ‘cousin’ although they are not related.

A Jackson fan, he had contacted him by letter and started spending time at Neverland when he was nine.

Barnes admitted that they shared a bed but said that they took separate sides. ‘It’s this big bed . . . and I was on one side and he was on the other,’ he said. He added: ‘He kissed you like you kiss your mother. It’s not unusual for him to hug, kiss and nuzzle up to you and stuff.’

At around this time Jackson also met Jordy Chandler — another young fan who looked and dressed like him, but this time the association ended in disaster.

Chandler’s step-father ran a car rental agency and met Jacko after he broke down on a highway in LA in 1992. He got his wife to bring Jordy — a huge fan — to meet the star and they exchanged phone numbers. The family, including Jordan’s sister, were eventually invited to come and stay at Neverland.

In May 1993, Jackson took Jordy and his mother to Monaco for the World Music Awards and the two of them shared a room. June Chandler was given a diamond bracelet by the singer.

In September 1993 Chandler’s parents sued Jackson for ‘repeatedly committing sexual battery on their son’.

Jackson was traumatised. When the first complaints about him were made public, he proposed marriage to friend Lisa Marie Presley after a series of phone calls in which, she later said, he seemed ‘high, incoherent and delusional’.

After legal wrangling, he settled the case with Jordy out of court in 1994. A reported £11.4 million went into trust for Jordy, £1.1 million to each of his parents and £3.8 million to the lawyers. His legal team said that it was ‘in no way an admission of guilt’.

Jordy refused to cooperate with a police investigation, and it was dropped. The director of Leaving Neverland, Dan Reed, said: ‘Jordan’s not easily accessible. We did a bit of sleuthing to try and find him but decided to not push that any further as he appears to want to stay hidden, for now.’ You might assume that after the scandal Jackson would have dropped his habit of taking young male fans on tour with him, but you would be wrong.

One young fan Michael Jacobshagen says that he spent three weeks with Jackson on tour in 1997 and more time in 1998, mostly in his hotel room.

Jacobshagen, now 35, says that Jackson called him his ‘Rubba Rubba boy’ and would grind his body against him.

He says that the singer gave him a book containing pictures of naked young men and inscribed it to his ‘special friend’ and ‘rubba rubba friend’.

He believes that the singer was testing him and seeing how far he could go. Jacobshagen adds that Jackson bought his mother a Cartier watch.

Another association was struck up with Omer Bhatti, a Norweigian dance fan, who met Jackson at a hotel in Tunis while the singer was on the HIStory tour in 1996.

Jackson was so taken with the boy — who was 11 years old at the time — that Bhatti joined him for the rest of the tour, coming on stage with Jackson and travelling with him. The friendship grew so deep that Omer joined Jackson in Neverland full-time. In 1997, Omer’s mother Pia and father Riz were given jobs by Jackson, as nanny and driver respectively.

Omer started going by the name Michael Joseph Winter and was raised as ‘one of his family’ alongside son Prince, born in 1997, daughter Paris born in 1998, both to nurse Debbie Rowe, and son Blanket born in 2002 to a surrogate.

Rowe never lived at Neverland, but Omer did. Indeed, he was one of the Jackson associates who were at home in Neverland in 2003 when it was raided by police.

The raid was sparked after Jackson boasted in a Martin Bashir documentary that he regularly had sleepovers with children, including cancer sufferer Gavin Arvizo, a fan.

Jackson said: ‘It’s not sexual. We’re going to sleep. I tuck them in. It’s very charming.’

Police found a collection of pornographic material at the property which included books and videos. Jackson was arrested and charged with committing lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14.

During Jackson’s trial, Arvizo and his younger brother testified that the singer showed them pornography and made them drink ‘Jesus juice’ — wine. Both said Jackson masturbated in front of them and molested Arvizo on multiple occasions.

In footage screened as part of Leaving Neverland, he said: ‘He showed me, he wanted to show me how to masturbate.

Then I said no and he said he would do it for me.’ (At the trial Brett Barnes, who toured with Jackson as a child, testified that the singer had ‘absolutely not’ molested him. Asked if Jackson had ever touched him in a sexual way, he said: ‘Never. I wouldn’t stand for it.’)

Jackson was found not guilty of all charges on June 13, 2005.

He then went into an extended period of travelling with his children, their nanny — and Omer Bhatti, now a teenager. Although Bhatti’s parents returned to Norway he went with Jackson to Bahrain and Ireland.

In a recent interview with a Norwegian magazine, Bhatti said: ‘Michael was in many ways very innocent. One cannot, of course, expect everyone else to have the same views on things, and he was too naive and was hurt by being too kind. For him, certain things were natural and completely innocent, something not necessarily everyone else would see in the same way.’

He was in the front row of the funeral with Jackson’s family and remains close to the children.

Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, who struck up a friendship with Michael Jackson when he cast him in the video for Black Or White in 1991, also defended him.

He said during Jackson’s 2005 trial that allegations against the singer were ‘absolutely ridiculous’. He said that between the ages of nine and 14 he slept in Jackson’s bed a dozen or more times but said that nothing inappropriate happened.

In an interview this year he said: ‘At the end of the day, it’s almost easy to try and say it was like weird or whatever, but it wasn’t, because it made sense, we were friends.’

His daughter Paris this week has called the allegations ‘lies’, while his brother Marlon said there was ‘not one piece of evidence’.

But there’s no doubt that the sleepovers, the touring, the jewellery and the dozens of pictures of Jackson with the boys depict a deeply troubling obsession.

Our story - Jeremy's pov

I had just returned to Bahrain, from a particularly stressful (and thankfully my last) mission. I had been out for a bit, so I was doing what I could to get back in touch with society. One of my friends suggested I pay for Tinder, so I could change my location from Bahrain. I had no idea how this one simple suggestion would literally change my life. I set my location to the Destin area, since my parents had recently relocated and it was essentially now “home”. February 17th 2017, I matched with a pretty little lady from Destin, her profile adorned with pictures of tailgating, a black puppy dog, and the beach.

Our conversation started with a simple “Hi”, and never stopped. I’ve never been great at keeping a conversation with a stranger going, but here I was, middle of the day in Bahrain, stepping outside every 3 minutes to get cell service, anxiously awaiting every reply. And what was impressive to me, was that with the 12 hour time difference, this girl was awake at 2am, doing the exact same thing. When I had to leave her for a while to attend to my duties, I facetimed her. AND SHE ANSWERED. She was real, and even more beautiful than her pictures portrayed. She was sick, and in bed, and I was essentially a stranger, yet she answered. We talked briefly, and said our goodnights, but from that moment on, I was hers.

We continued texting, and Facetimed as much as we could, since I wasn’t due to leave Bahrain for another month and a half. I came to know who Michelle was, where she’d been, and fell head over heels in love with everything about her. I met Bellamy on FaceTime, and unofficially adopted him as my little black son. We talked day and night, both of us losing sleep regularly to talk, doing what we could to make the time and distance a little easier to deal with.

April 7th finally arrived. I had jumped through some hoops, and rerouted my flight home to Fort Walton airport. We were both amped up. We were finally going to meet face to face. We had so many adventures planned for our time together. Of course my flight back to the US took foooooorever. I landed in Norfolk the next day, and checked into a hotel. I was closer to Michelle than I had been since we “met”. I barely slept. Morning came and I checked out early to head to the airport. Good thing I did, Murphy’s law had a few surprises for us. Every flight going south, was canceled. A weather system had rolled through Atlanta a few days earlier, and caused a backup when crews couldn’t make it to their aircraft. Delta reassured me that they could get me home….the following Tuesday. Thanks but no thanks. Michelle was just as upset as I was when I told her what was going on. But neither of us were taking this sitting down. I called my buddy Jordan, and he was at the airport in 15 minutes to pick me up. We set off looking for a rental car. I was going to drive to Florida. Turns out everyone else in Norfolk had the same idea, only they had about a days head start on me. There were no rental cars to be had. We went to 5 different rental car agencies before finally we caught a break. We found an untapped enterprise with cars that would let me return to a store in Florida. It was a huge relief, but I still had a 13 hour drive ahead of me. I set off like a rocket (doing the speed limit of course).

Along the way, updating Michelle, she decided that 13 hours of driving just wouldn’t do. She was going to set off in the opposite direction and meet me. Again, I was floored by how dedicated to “us” she was, but it was just the beginning. We decided we would meet in Jacksonville, since it was my turn off of 95. But of course ole Murphy decided to throw us another curve ball. It just happened to be spring break up north, and I hit pockets of stop and go traffic for about 6 hours through the Carolinas. Michelle quickly decided she would just keep heading north. I knew there wasn’t much north of Kingsbay, and my timeline worked, so we decided thats where we would meet. Kingsbay was also my first duty station, from 2005 to 2008, so I was familiar enough with it to guide her to Osaka, so we could have dinner together. She made it well before me, so she sat in the parking lot and waited. I was still a little too far out to make it before they closed, but I was close. I of course led her to believe I was a lot farther. Turning off of 95, I was getting nervous. My hands were sweating and I had that funny anxious feeling in my stomach. Would she like me in person? Was I a little stinky from driving all day? What if I tripped and fell on my face as I was walking up to her? I was psyching myself out to say the least.

I turned off the main road and whipped around into the Osaka parking lot. It was dark, so I was just another set of headlights as I scoped the place out, figuring out a way to sneak up on her. She was parked between a few cars, so I parked and got out, careful not to slam my door. As I walked down the edge of the parking lot, I texted her the “I’m here” (didn’t want to get shot creeping up in the dark). As I rounded the SUV next to her, I saw that pretty face in the rear view mirror, and all the fear melted away. She was out of the car and in my arms in a flash. For the first 5 minutes, the rest of the world ceased to exist. We finally calmed down some, and decided we’d stop in Kingsbay for the night, since it was around 11pm. So we headed out, Michelle following me, to find a place to stay. Just our luck, all the spring breakers had also picked Kingsbay to stop, and there were no rooms anywhere. But, after a quick phone call, we had a suite reserved for the night at the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites on base. Never did I think NSB Kingsbay would be my saviour.

We were up early and on the move the next day, after a quick tour and some McDonalds breakfast of course. We took turns leading our little convoy from Kingsbay to Niceville. I didn’t think we would ever get home, but eventually we were turning off of 10 and winding around a two lane road, Michelle reassuring me we were almost there. Pulling into the driveway, and walking through the door, I felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I was finally there. With the woman I adored. No more distance, no more driving separate, no more saying goodnight to a phone. And over the next month, even though I was living out of a suitcase, I was home.

On May 21st 2017, we headed to the beach to look for shells. Unknown to Michelle, I had a sparkly ring in my pocket. Of course it wasn’t in the box, since the jeweller saw fit to put it in a box the size of a VHS tape. As we walked down the beach collecting shells, I scouted out the perfect spot to get down on one knee. As we made the turn and headed back, I wandered up away from the water a bit. I glanced down and noticed some paw prints on the deserted stretch of sand. It was now or never. I called Michelle over to “look at a shell”. As she strolled up, I staged the ring under a shell, and dropped to my knee. After a few words, and some happy tears, we were engaged. I have to pinch myself every day, to make sure its real. I consider myself the luckiest man in the world to have found such an amazing woman, and to know that I will call her my wife soon. And I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life showing her how much she means to me.

Wealthy Qatar Weathers Siege, but Personal and Political Costs Grow

DOHA, Qatar--A young business executive had to cancel a $150,000 family vacation in Saudi Arabia. Another woman grumbled that deliveries of designer fashions from the internet store Net-a-Porter were taking several days longer to arrive.

Others said they disliked the taste of the new Turkish milk in stores, preferring the old Saudi variety, but a tycoon offered a solution: He intends to fly 4,000 cows to Qatar, in what may be the biggest ever bovine airlift.

Qatar has been under a siege of sorts for the past month, but the wealthy Persian Gulf nation is, so far, feeling little pain.

When four Arab nations blockaded Qatar’s airspace and shipping channels last month in a bid to force it to drop its maverick foreign policy and shutter its influential TV station, Al Jazeera, there was an initial burst of panic as some supermarket shelves emptied. But that quickly subsided, and since then the gas-rich nation has deployed its formidable treasury to keep its 300,000 people in the comfort to which they are accustomed.

A small thumb-shaped country that protrudes into the Persian Gulf, Qatar depends on Saudi Arabia for its only land border, which is now closed. Camels and migrant workers caught on the wrong side of the frontier when the crisis erupted have found themselves stranded.

Qatar Airways, whose flights have been forced to leave the region through Iranian airspace, is running up to eight extra cargo flights every day to bring fresh supplies of fruit, meat and vegetables to Doha, the capital. Executives have ordered new cargo planes, and at the company’s vast, air-conditioned cargo facility at the airport in Doha on Sunday, employees said they anticipated little difficulty in handling the increased freight.

A $7 billion port, which started operations in December, is expected to pick up the rest of the slack with shipments from new suppliers in Iran, India and elsewhere. Qatar’s government is footing the bill.

“We can cover the financial aspect without even tapping into our investments,” said Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed al-Thani, a member of the ruling clan and a senior communications official in the government. “It’s not a problem.”

For the countries leading the blockade--Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain--it illuminates the challenge of laying economic siege to the world’s richest country per capita.

On June 22, the four countries issued a list of 13 demands against Qatar, including cutting its alleged ties to terrorist organizations, shutting down Al Jazeera and closing a small Turkish military base. Qatar said the ultimatums amounted to a demand that it surrender its sovereignty.

The original deadline for meeting those demands was midnight on Sunday. But Qatar--which sits on a vast, lucrative gas field--indicated that it did not intend to give an inch. “We are prepared to face whatever consequences,” the foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, said in Rome on Saturday.

The four countries agreed to a request by Kuwait, which has been acting as a mediator in the dispute, to extend by 48 hours the deadline for Doha to comply, according to a joint statement published by the Saudi state news agency SPA.

Yet even if they appear to be winning the economic standoff so far, the Qataris are feeling the pinch in other ways. And the deepening crisis is having worrisome effects that are rippling across the gulf and battering political unity. Experts warn that the crisis could destabilize the broader region if it persists for months, or longer, as many fear.

The feud over Qatar has already extended beyond the gulf, sucking in Turkey, which is backing Doha, and Russia, which is trying to steer a middle course in the dispute. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Saturday that he had spoken with the leaders of Qatar and Bahrain in a bid to stimulate dialogue.

Normally, the United States might be counted on to help resolve the crisis, given that it considers itself a close ally of all the sparring countries. Qatar is home to a huge American air base with 10,000 American service personnel and warplanes that carry out daily attacks on the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

But American policy on the dispute has had an inconstant quality of late, with the State Department offering sharp criticism of the Saudi and Emirati demands--which it called the product of an old grudge--while President Trump has sided firmly with the countries leading the blockade.

“We’re having a dispute with Qatar,” Mr. Trump said at a closed-door fund-raiser in Washington on Wednesday, according to an audio recording leaked to the news site The Intercept. After mocking what he called the country’s preferred pronunciation of its name, he said, “I prefer that they don’t fund terrorism.”

Some American officials say Mr. Trump’s policy is being driven by two advisers, Stephen K. Bannon and Sebastian Gorka, who are firmly in the Saudi camp, and who see harsh punishment of Qatar as a warning to any country accused of indulging Islamists.

Qatar has been at odds with its neighbors for years over its stubbornly independent foreign policy and its sponsorship of Al Jazeera, hugely popular across the Arabic-speaking world. The last spat, in 2014, led Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to withdraw their ambassadors from Doha in protest for seven months. Qatar’s rulers have deep tribal ties to Saudi Arabia and have spent much of the last two decades trying to shake loose from their neighbor’s influence.

But this time, citizens on both sides have become mired in the fight, and it feels more bitter and personal.

Every night, people flock to a giant billboard in a Doha suburb to sign their names on a sketched image of the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. After going viral in the early days of the blockade, the image, drawn by a local artist, has become an icon of Qatari resistance, adorning skyscrapers, car windows and cellphones across the capital.

Such displays of nationalism are unusual in Qatar, but the artist, Ahmed Almaadheed, said he had been visited by Sheikha al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, a senior royal and a titan in the global art market, who offered her approval. One Qatari offered him $5 million for the original image, he said, but it was not for sale. “It’s a piece of history,” he said.

On Friday night, men in white robes and black-clad women waited in line to be carried, one by one, on a cherry-picker so they could find a space to sign atop the 120-square-foot billboard.

Among them was Umm Hassan, a government employee, 40, on her third visit. “The people have become like one heart,” she said.

But the crisis has also been a source of great sadness, she said. Her family has been shattered--a relative just died in Bahrain, and nobody could attend the funeral. Then there is her cousin, married to an Emirati, who recently had to send her 1-year-old daughter to the United Arab Emirates to live with her husband. Under the law in most Middle Eastern countries, a child inherits the nationality of the father, and after the siege started, the United Arab Emirates insisted that all of its citizens leave Qatar.

“The cost of this crisis is human,” a distraught Ms. Hassan said. “It’s between governments, but it’s about people.”

For others, the crisis is playing out on social media. Some Saudis on Twitter have delighted in mocking the Turkish milk being drunk in Qatar, terming it “donkey milk,” while young Qataris have turned to Snapchat for humorous, doggedly partisan takes on the crisis. Many place the blame squarely on Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, who recently became the country’s crown prince.

With the belligerents so heavily dug in, most analysts say the crisis will get worse before it improves.

In recent weeks, hackers, apparently on Qatar’s side, have sent journalists covering the crisis copies of emails written by senior Emirati officials in an apparent attempt to discredit them.

Qatari officials, in turn, say they have been targeted by covert Emirati efforts to hurt the country’s currency.

Mr. Thani, the Qatari communications official, said the crisis was likely to escalate, but he vowed that Qatar’s adversaries would suffer just as much. “Whatever they lose, we lose,” he said.

He added: “We have a drop in air transit; so do they. We have no problem in this continuing--internally, financially or politically.”
