anon bud im not sure what worth you think sending that post about tiffany having a government position to me has. you'd think i would have made it clear enough i don't really support ao3 and that includes not wanting people to pay 10 dollars to be an otw member or whatever. it's already pretty fuckin clear the fearmongering adults who genuinely compare "antis" to christian puritans and racist queerphobic white supremacists have it in the bag on getting people not to vote for tiffany, i think as worthwhile as it is to note that she is in a position of power, it is also worthwhile to note what the post on the matter i already reblogged said about how people will clamor to talk about chinese spies regardless of what job tiffany has and i'm not gonna add to that.
also this is a dream smp blog and i'm trying to make a deltarune inspired au rn leave me be

kpop music videos that gave their fans sexual brainworms
OR accidental fetish pop and its fringe fanbase: meditations on gendered desire
large warning here: i am someone who has been into kpop for the past 10 years. however, i have always been an extremely casual fan. i do write fic, but not rpf. if any of that makes you not want to hear me talk about kpop rpf (or you don’t want to hear about it in general), please keep moving.
anyway, obviously pop is corporate, soulless, and manufactured. but sometimes some truly bizarre shit gets past the committees and destroys a generation. these are their stories.
the video that started this is all is got7’s just right, released july 10th, 2015.
Tumblr media
yes that’s all 7 members of got7 (one is out of frame) shrunken down for your viewing pleasure. they live in your room and tell you you’re just right.
this sheer fetish power of this video is nerfed only by how utterly sexless it is.
Tumblr media
they’re styled like and dance like this. it’s a totally unironic sendup of the seminal work that preceded it by four years, “what makes you beautiful” by the white kpop group “one direction.” the chaste energy of the whole thing makes you legitimately wonder if the good people at jyp have just never heard of microphilia. (during a dramatic reading of this piece, here a friend interjected seriously, “i think it’s korean culture not to talk about things like this, fetishes in the workplace.”)
it’s for the best, honestly, though because the actress in the music video is lee ja in, who was 11 when the video was shot. considering that the members themselves ranged in age from 18-23 at the time, i think it’s actually very impressive that we only have to cancel one.
you receive absolutely no prizes for guessing that it’s jackson wang we’re sending to social justice prison. why’d he do this? no one asked.
Tumblr media
at any rate, got7 fans, or “gans” (they actually call themselves igot7s which is too twee for me), have much to think about here: all 7 very small members of got7 sneaking into their room, possibly weird age play, and jackson wang eating a very large cake.
let’s see what they actually did.
twitter was actually very tame. the most charged thing i found was (unsurprisingly) from a bts fan (“ban”). i don’t actually know what it means, but i think it means something.
Tumblr media
so, of course, i turned to the internet’s last bastion of free speech, where you can say whatever the fuck you want and receive cheers, or as the kids say, “kudos.” that is, i read fanfiction.
for those of you who don’t know your herstory, i started my journey at Asianfanfics.com, where, at the time of writing, there were 12,067 got7 stories. i want to start this by saying that i think feminism won, because someone was paying real human dollars to advertise their irene/wendy fanfiction on a banner ad, which is quite possibly a win for women for everywhere.
anyway, Asianfanfics.com’s search engine sucks ass (i kept on finding stories about different combinations of bts members worrying about their weight and being reassured by another member that were entitled “just right”), so i decided to look through all got7 stories written between july 2015 and december 2015.
but, alas, not a single got7 microphilia fic to be found.
also, some genre commentary while i’m here: i think the stories i respect the most are the “[y/n] is a ordinary girl who’s assigned to be got7’s manager! can she make them into superstars? as sparks begin to fly, can she keep it professional?” like fuck yeah that sounds like a kickass dating sim. it almost definitely already is one. i salute all the teens around the world for buying into the fantasy of dating a boy band member that they themselves sell you.
however, i don’t think i respect the “[member a] and [member b] are mafia/jocks and nerds/college students/high schoolers” concepts. in my opinion, the whole fantasy of boy band member is their personas, their hidden real personalities, their celebrity, and the show business setting. find a different intellectual property if you wanna write about school. i even respect the “yugyeom drank girl juice [not estrogen] and turned into a sexy girl” story more, because at least it knows exactly what it wants, and also because they’re all still boy band members. well, band members. shout out to yugyeom.
so, anyway, i looked elsewhere. at the time of writing, archive of our own only had 11,645 got7 stories, but it does have a better search, so it effectively has more. as an aside, i think it’s so funny, and mildly disorienting at first, that archive of our own separates the “music & bands” section from the “celebrities & real people” section. boy band members aren’t real people.
the first problem i encountered is that only 20 or so stories were written within a year of just right’s release. absolute cringe gans. don’t you care about your boys? there were zero stories tagged “vore” or “microphilia” either. stories containing the word “tiny” that were rated either “explicit” or “mature” were all normal (“normal”) size fetishization rather than, you know, just right.
however, i learned my lesson from twitter. i realized that what had happened was that watching this video had created sleeper agents, just waiting for their activation phrase. that activation phrase? bangtan boys. and yeah, lo and behold, there was one! unfortunately (fortunately?) it had nothing to do with got7, let alone just right, so i’m not going to talk about it.
basically what i learned is that this video may have actually been very normal, and my brain has just been destroyed by being too online at a young age.
however, there are plenty more videos in this genre. i present to you exo wolf, a banger from may 30th, 2013. i say banger, because in a comedic inversion, it’s actually fucking terrible.
Tumblr media
this video is pretty self-explanatory in terms of why it might induce certain responses.
let’s get the formalities out of the way. this video, the member who’s getting cancelled is kai. he has braids in this video :/
also skating on thin ice: xiumin and chen. guys what was up with the whole exo-m thing? like, we’re gonna have a cpop subgroup, but it’s going to be part chinese members and part korean members that we’ll give a chinese name? unsurprisingly, the three exo members who have departed from the group are all chinese. they weren’t able to stand the microaggressions probably. but xiumin and chen remain uncancelled as an official chinese apology for five thousand of years of on-and-off invasions of korea. sorry guys that was kinda fucked up. our bad!
anyway, there are basically three avenues for exo fans to take: 1) humans with wolfish characters (usually wolf pack dynamics, which even wolves themselves don’t fucking use so i think all of you should shut up. the real omega here is your brain), 2) werewolves (duh), and 3) wolves with human characteristics (i.e. standard furry fare).
Tumblr media
exo themselves let all these possibilities exist at the same time, superimposing them over each other, which is very woke and egalitarian of them. let’s see what the people decided. awoo.
Asianfanfics dot com had many stories in this vein. i feel very validated that this time i was able to correctly predict a fetish. that said, briefly returning to my earlier comment regarding alternate universes: it’s intense psychic whiplash reading about these vampires and werewolves, and going okay okay luhan is a vampire this that whatever, and then seeing the actual real performance photos the author attaches at the bottom of each chapter. bro i forgot these were actual people.... it breaks immersion so bad... i’m sorry, i just can’t believe that any of these dancing boys are having weird vampire sex with wings or whatever.
archive of our own also had many stories in this vein. and i think there are some important difference between the two sites worth talking about.
first of all, i think the higher engagement rate of archive of our own really enables some of the authors to get super bold. it makes Asianfanfics.com seem a little quaint, actually. like the wordcounts are waaay longer, for one. it’s uncommon for a story hosted on Asianfanfics.com to be more than a few thousand words long (most of them could easily be published in the new yorker), whereas some of these archive of our own people have written full length novels about if the members of exo were werewolves. i guess it’s just intensely demoralizing for the aff.com crew to get, like, three comments per story.
the second big difference is that i’m noticing more common themes between the ao3 crew’s writing. like stan intertextuality, or plagiarism, or whatever, but they seem to be implicitly engaging with each other’s characterizations, storylines, and tropes. i think it is because they probably all follow each other on twitter. (i have been active on twitter for three weeks now so i am an expert on fanfiction twitter.)
anyway, like not that i am a particularly big gan (cannot even list all the members), but these people seem to have reached a very specific consensus on how jackson wang, for instance, would react in a variety of situations that really surprises me? if i were to sit down and write a got7 story, i think the fuckboitude, the douchebaggery is a big part of his charm. not to be nationalist or anything, but for god’s sake, he’s from hong kong. but these people have him as very sensitive, lots of protective instincts. not that i understood what anyone on aff.com was doing with his character either, but they did all seem to be doing different things. “kudos” to that, i guess.
but: exo. wolf. i searched the “wolves” tag. this filtered the list down from 33459 stories to 52 stories. and the “wolves” tag was very different from the aff.com “wolf” tag. for the most part, aff.com liked stories where a member was a wolf (usually shapeshifting), feral boy, lots of y/n, lots of y/n dating a feral boy who is secretly a wolf.
ao3 really, really, really likes alpha/beta/omega stories. sorting by the most popular stories, only five on the first page weren’t a/b/o. and one of them was a cis f!baekhyun story, so i think the intended effect was communicated. anyway, let’s talk about some of the themes.
first of all, i’m disappointed. today’s bonus cancellation is of ao3 “wolves” writers. why the fuck are you drawing so heavily from european wolves?? there are wolves in asia!! you don’t need to keep giving their packs and ranks weird latin names. i will kill you. i hate italy. korea literally has a native wolf. i hate all of you!!! if you want to write caucasian wolves go watch that dumbass cw show!!!! my god.
the second theme (the first one was white supremacy) is that no one wants to be a wolf who fucks. i think that we need a sex positivity movement, or something, for omega rights. like, are all of you doing okay? you’re queering misogyny by inventing new genders to oppress. another level to “no one wants to be a wolf...” is the “who fucks” part. there are so many consent issues. and not even in like, a sexy intentional way? in a “i genuinely do not think this author understands how their writing comes off” way. unfortunately i am sensitive to untagged sexual coercion, and there was a lot of that.
at any rate, the aff.com wolves were at peace with being wolves, very self-actualized. the ao3 wolves know that every minute they spend alive on this bitch of an earth is suffering, and also sex.
the third theme is the evolution of y/n. y/n, who, in a startlingly woke move for aff.com, is almost always korean, is a girl main character stumbling into love, boy bands, and wolves (i think it’s because aff.com is oldschool kpop fandom, so therefore heavily asian itself in userbase). but y/n is not the main character in ao3 stories. she is the straight best friend. in what i think is a hilarious move, ao3 authors invert the gay best friend paradigm to give the gay main character a straight girl as best friend. she usually calls him “a gay,” she has lots of thoughts on boys, and she knows his sexuality better than he does and before he does. (sidebar: if all the men are gay, and all the women are straight...)
there’s a really fun twist to this, though, because the main character is always a self-insert in fanfiction. but where older fanfiction like aff.com was at peace with this and literalize it via y/n shenanigans, modern fic writers who haven’t finished distangling their complicated relationship with wanting to be a man who loves other men instead simply imbue their main character with their essence. a little voodoo doll sehun, with a lock of y/n hair.
this creates a deeply ambivalent relationship with gender in these stories. the main character is usually an omega, but one who resents being an omega. their body and its parts is usually described, if at all, as ostensibly intersex (except more offensively), but in practice, these discourses inscribe a trans body. (nb: i think cis writers approach this in a really fucked up fetishizing way, but i hope by this point we know that that goes without saying) it’s incredibly straightforward to read this, and see the underlying desires and fears in a heady cocktail of unfiltered writing that’s deeply confessional. you know when freud had people say whatever the fuck they wanted and figured they’d eventually free associate into releasing their subconscious into reality? yeah.
okay, and while we’re on the topic, let’s talk f(x) nu abo, released on may 4th, 2010.
Tumblr media
this is a blitzy, maximalist, amped up dance hit that even has its own applause and cheers built in. it’s so fucking annoying, and i love it.
this song is on here because the second most popular kpop a/b/o story on ao3 is called “nu abo” except it’s about bts. that’s offensive enough in its own right. write something about f(x) (702 works). when will women win the right to have their own self-lubricating holes.
anyway, even though f(x) is probably innocent in all of this, i’m still cancelling amber liu.
Tumblr media
for queerbaiting. who told her to look like ruby rose but hot? and for what? i’m also cancelling her for racism, but that wasn’t in this video.
moving on to a double feature: vixx voodoo doll and vixx chained up, released november 19, 2013 and november 9, 2015 respectively. this is because while voodoo doll is more formative, i think the fans who write fanfiction today got into kpop more recently, so we are casting a wide net.
Tumblr media
anyway, voodoo doll is jam packed with weird pseudo-medical imagery, blood, vivisection, bondage, puppet shit, femdom, sharps, piercings, asphyxiation, dollification, stabbing/penetration metaphors, and a really sick and catchy dance. god that looks like the list of tags on the a/b/o wolf stories.
for this song, we’re cancelling you, for being way too into this song when you were 13.
Tumblr media
vixx voodoo doll made me goth i guess! insert that pic of the your music saved me sign, except it saved me from getting into emo or pop punk probably.
chained up, comparatively, is much more tame. the only thing of note about it is that there are around 10 completely different chokers and choker looks the members wear in this music video. also they’re singing about being chained up, but that seemed a bit obvious.
Tumblr media
we could argue that voodoo doll is gay while chained up is gay (derogatory); that voodoo doll is queer while chained up is gay; that chained up is a sensitive masterpiece of omega4omega sexuality. but we’re not going to.
we’re going to talk about what voodoo doll fanfiction was and was not. first, Aff.com had plenty of it. however, i was extremely disappointed to see that much of it did not hew to the spirit of vixx voodoo doll. my god, the voodoo doll becoming the one preying upon you disgusts me. the fantasy of the voodoo doll is that of absolute power. the idea that the doll itself has agency? instantly breaks the fantasy. i’m even not into voodoo dolls and i’m offended.
i also don’t think it’s part of the voodoo doll fantasy to release the doll. the only story on there that involved Y/N kidnapping vixx members like in the music video was unavailable because the author deactivated their account. come back qxeen what did you see.
i think this got off track, actually, in that i was mostly wondering why these people imprinted differently onto vixx voodoo doll than i did. like i don’t think you’re supposed to actually like straightforwardly absorb the morals and aesthetics of music videos like it’s propaganda. however, it’s more entertaining if you do. i hope ao3 doesn’t let me down.
out of the then 5932 works in the vixx fandom (the least out of every group so far, excluding f(x) because they’re women), 59 of them included the word “voodoo” somewhere. that’s 1%. i legitimately can’t tell if that’s high or not.
after some more cursory reading through the first page of popular results, my big takeaway is that people watched that video and wanted to be tortured and enslaved? but not, like, in a sexy way where the torturing is the point, the way where the point is to suffer bravely and beautifully, to endure the world’s harms like jesus on the cross, and then to fall into the arms of a beautiful boy who may or may not be the one hurting you in the first place.
there’s a certain predictability to these fantasies. like it’s not even masochism, which would be fun at least, it’s literally just like the desire to be beautiful, even as you suffer. and i do find that a little boring. (but, i mean, you can’t help being a woman!)
sidebar: on chained up. what’s interesting about chained up, is that most of the then 38 “chained up” works (likely because the video has no storyline) are about the members fucking during chained up promotions. no one’s ever actually chained up, but whatever. it’s fine. it’s fine!
anyway, here, more than ever, the nature of desire is stripped bare. i’ve written before [elsewhere in the unreleased tshirt cinematic universe] on how kpop boys are, through fandom, re-formed as white, or more strongly, i guess, blank slates. it’s really interesting to me how so much of this dynamic of projection is enabled by the fact that they’re asian men. they’re infantilized, feminized vessels; they’re seductive, but childlike, oblivious to their own charms, so nonthreatening; they have uncontrollable desires for sex, they’re scared of sex. and above all else, white women submit themselves to them, insert themselves into them. basically kpop fans tend to rework old school yellow peril and emasculation fantasies to reenact their own desires, often white, often cishet on them.
what i am saying is that there’s another thesis about forced feminization and its racialized subtext in here. obviously gender is a racialized construct to begin with, but like it’s fascinating to argue that when white women remake asian men according to their own desires, that is, into themselves, they (hopefully) unintentionally echo these old fears about the sexual order.
it illuminates, it seems, the underlying dynamic in the denigration of asian men, which is of course the fear of miscegenation. now, my breathtaking ability to make everything about me aside, miscegenation is interesting because it presents a racial synthesis, beginning to collapse and trouble the artificial designations of purity. so we make asian men into white women, and end up with an unsettling hybrid. i’m sure this has deep implications for me personally.
but i think we already knew that quite a few of these people had yellow fever, so let’s talk about the gender dialectic at play. basically, the above dynamic, of making men into women (whether literally, in body; or subjectively, in mind; or even relationally, as they are objectified into passive vessels for your desire) coexists with the ostensibly converse dynamic, in which the straight women desires to be a gay man. these aren’t necessarily in conflict: it could easily be that these are different writers writing different stories, that both are ways of expressing discontent with existing in a raced, gendered body, or even that the end product of both is the same.
Tumblr media
it’s been a while without a picture. all of you now have the legal right to hunt and kill me for making a d&g joke.
anyway, what i want to talk about is how these two fantasies can coexist. that by making a man into yourself, you can speak on your own desire in a passive way. my normal interest is analyzing forced masc fantasies (albeit in chinese opera lol), and they bear little to no resemblance to this kind of fantasy. this kind offers plausible deniability, of course, because wanting things is embarrassing. but also the fantasy isn’t about wanting to be a man, it’s about having no choice but to be a failed one. the gender pessimism running through these stories is palpable. basically andrea long chu wants what wolf fanfiction writers know: everyone is an omega, and everyone hates it.
at any rate, this racialized dynamic is one that i wasn’t sure how to bring up throughout this piece, mainly because there is no definitive way for me to tell the race of any individual writer, beyond just like the clear and present vibes that i receive. but i think it structures a lot of the fantasies contained in this essay. (i felt more comfortable bringing up the gendered dynamic, because it was fairly trivial to find out the current gender of the person writing each story i was reading.)
obviously we should return to the specter haunting this conversation: the very much alive david eng. i think this sort of argument is familiar to readers of racial castration, especially his chapter on m. butterfly. btw sorry for mentioning that play 2 out of 3 posts on this blog. i have problems.
let’s talk about the parallel imagery between the depiction of gallimard’s final speech and the fanfiction i’ve described above. in it, gallimard makes himself into his own dream woman, dressing in yellowface and robes, the costume of puccini’s original madame butterfly. and he laments his lost love:
there is a vision of the orient that i have. of slender women in chong sams and kimonos who die for the love of unworthy foreign devils. who are born and raised to be the perfect women. who take whatever punishment we give them, and bounce back, strengthened by love, unconditionally.
in that, i see the self insert, and i see the sufferer of vixx voodoo fic. the fantasy that gallimard has about asian women is repeated, this time about asian men and a helpless identification with them. and on some level, gallimard’s women do have something very compelling to identify with: they suggest that there’s a way to endure white male violence without sacrifice, and even more potently, to enjoy it on some level.
but onward to the titular racial castration. eng argues that gallimard’s wilful ignorance of song’s true gender is a psychic castration -- song’s masculinity is diminished so that his own can be enhanced within their relationship. this, eng believes, acts out “richard fung’s contention that in western imaginary ‘asian and anus are conflated.’” this process stabilizes the relationship between the asian man and the white woman: they occupy the same place within the sexual dyad.
this is, i think, why some people are addicted to writing from the bottom’s perspective. again -- not implying that irl bottoms don’t exist or that bottoms are psychically castrated lol -- but rather that you can fantasize about this ideal asian man that you can come to embody. in kpop rpf, rather than it being between a white man and an asian man (unless someone’s started writing chad future fic), it’s between two asian men. so this transformation is performed. whiteness is always intruding and so i think eng is helpful here to making it visible again.
this essay isn’t a callout or actual cancellation or anything like that, i do wanna be clear. i guess i just like talking about fantasies, even the embarrassing ones, and where they come from. i think oftentimes in fandom spaces, we write a lot of stories off as idfic, and i think virtually every single one of the stories i referenced to write this fairly uncontroversially fall into that category. but i think calling something an “id” something or the other naturalizes the satisfaction it gives as purely instinctual and unconscious, when i do think there are deeper narratives at play. while i didn’t ever actually reference the base here (sorry), i do think it’s worth talking about how real world power shapes & maintains the superstructure, and thereby our fantasies.
anyway in conclusion, maybe i was the one with sexual brainworms the whole time.

Can you explain some of the terms in the history of fandom purges post? For example, what is a pro-shipper blog??? I’m really scared to be deleted! I’ve bren here for years!
Of course, I’m happy to explain! This is a very brief summary, if there’s anything you need to know more about, I’m happy to do my best. Fanlore is also a good site to look up some more stuff!
This is looooooong so under a cut! This is the post in question, for those of you wondering. Let’s go through it from top to bottom. I’ll skip the ones with links because you can follow those links to get more information.
Several times in the ‘90s as you can see on the timeline, authors and creators (and big studios like Paramount and LucasFilm) went after fansites, threatening them with Cease and Desist (C&D) letters and shutting them down. This was fairly common practice, and it wasn’t until fansites like Fiction Alley got big enough, and had actual lawyers on their side, that fandom was able to fight back. Ao3 keeps lawyers on staff for this very reason, because fandom falls under “fair use” and is legal.
Anne Rice is mentioned several times on that post and that’s because she is notorious for going after people who do fanwork. She is extremely controlling about how her characters are perceived by others, including going after anyone who writes a bad review about her books, and people writing their own interpretations of her characters just gets her goat like nothing else, apparently. And she has the money and lawyers to take down quite a lot of people. Thanks to our darling Ao3, we can write as much damn Interview with a Vampire fic as we desire, but you can understand why most fan archivists and fanwriters didn’t want to touch that possible lawsuit with a ten foot pole.
And, if you’re wondering what AOL, an email system, has to do with fansites? Well, another way to share fic, even before fansites, was through email chains. YES, YOU HEARD THAT RIGHT, READ AND LEARN, MY TINY CHILI BABIES. You had to sign up for an email newsletter to get fic! And oh, the fandom wars that could go on in this email chains… there’s a pretty infamous X Files one but that’s another post for another time. Anyway. X Files was one of the original “fandoms that ate fandom” (FTAF), a fandom so big that everyone was into it no matter what their original fandom was (Star Trek and Supernatural are two other examples of FTAF). AOL had a way of… how do I explain this… basically AOL was “hosting” a lot of the early prototypes of fansites, a version of the early email chains. So when The Powers That Be (TPTB) expressed their distaste for X Files fanfiction, AOL purged their X Files sites.
In the early 2000s, FanFiction.Net (FFN) was considered a safe haven. FFN was one of the first really big multifandom sites. Before that, if you wanted to read, say, Star Trek fic, you had to find a Star Trek fansite. If you then wanted to read X Files fic, you had to find an X Files fansite. And so on. Fan archives were often limited, and you might have to go to three different fansites to get all the fic out there, or even to get different kinds of fan material: a fic archive, a fan forum with news on the show/film/book, and a fanart archive.
Welcome to the dark days, my children.
Note: There are still some amazing fansites out there, filled with archived fic, fanart, and even some “virtual seasons” for television shows. If you or anyone you know is in charge of one of those archives, I beg of you to consider working with Ao3′s Open Doors project so that the fanwork on those sites can be preserved for future generations even after the original archivists pass on, lose funds, or lose interest.
Anyway, FFN was a huge relief for everyone because they no longer had to do all the work to archive our fic. Trust me, running an archive or even just uploading your fic back in the day could be exhausting. God forbid you get even one damn bit of your formatting wrong when you uploaded or it would all turn into a mess. And now, you could get your fic all in one place on one site! You didn’t have to sign up for all these different archives! You could have a single pseudonym and a single account for all your fic! The angels sang!
So when FFN got rid of fic without warning, it felt like a real betrayal. First, FFN banned porn, or anything they deemed to earn an NC-17 rating. Which is, as I’m sure you can immediately recognize, a sticky subject since people’s opinions are subjective about that. What does/does not qualify as porn? When is a fic too sexually graphic, what is and isn’t appropriate, etc?
Then FFN banned RPF, which stands for “Real Person Fiction.” If you write about Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean banging each other, congratulations, you’ve written RPF (RPF was a big part of the Lord of the Rings fandom when the movies came out, fun fact, aren’t you all glad I went down this rabbit hole of research so you don’t have to). If you write about meeting Chris Evans in the airport and the two of you going on a date in the food court, yes, that is RPF.
The other FFN bans mentioned are script format, CYOA, Readerfic, 2nd person, and Songfic. Script format is where people would write things in, well, a script form. I don’t remember exactly why that was banned, I think it was a combination of fear of copyright infringement and just the formatting was so damn annoying to do. CYOA is short for “choose your own adventure” and was banned because it just got too unwieldy for people. This is creeping into gatekeeping territory on what is “legitimate” fic or not. “Choose your own adventure fic is annoying so we’re going to ban it!” is part of a slippery path on what is appropriate or not. “Readerfic” is written in 2nd person POV like so:
You open the front door and are immediately met with the smell of death. You’ve never been around dead people before, so you have no reason to know what the smell is–but somehow, some long-forgotten instinct tells you. You know exactly what this is.
Readerfic is where the reader, you, interacts with characters in a TV show. Take that little snippet I just wrote, for example. If that bit is a part of a larger fic where you’re a Loser and you’re friends with the kids from IT and help them defeat Pennywise, that’s an example of Readerfic. 2nd person is just any fic that uses the “you” as the POV instead of “her” (3rd person) or “I” (first person). This is one of my old-as-dirt Castle fanfics so excuse the quality but here is an example of 2nd POV fic. As you can see, Readerfic is 2nd person, but not all 2nd person is Readerfic.
Songfic is where a fic would use song lyrics throughout, sometimes to the point of annoyance, in telling the story. Basically it was where people would use a song that reminded them of their OTP and write a vignette based around that song. FFN banned it because again, fear of copyright C&D from songwriters and studios.
This was all in the early 2000s, as the timeline in that post shows, but it wasn’t the last time FFN banned things. In 2012 we all got yet another scare when FFN, without warning, purged a fuckton of fics in a porn crackdown. See, we all figured out preeeeetty quickly that nobody was moderating fics to see if we were following the “nothing NC-17 rated” rule, so people kept posting smut, myself included. FFN’s crackdown was sudden and we lost a ton of fic that way. It was after this ban that Ao3, which had been created c. 2009, really started to gain steam as people moved en mass over there.
Also, as the timeline shows, FFN used to have fandom forums. That was where people could discuss things. The forums had been pretty dead, what with LiveJournal and Tumblr, BUT, they contained a fuckton of valuable fandom discussion and meta. FFN purged them, and years of important fandom history was once again lost (along with juicy fandom gossip/wank/scandal… shut up we all have our guilty pleasures).
So that’s all the FFN stuff.
Gryffindor Tower, Sakura Lemon Archive, and some other examples on that list are not about fandom purges so much as they are about what happens when we have an archive run by just one person or a handful of people. That person dies, or is unable to foot the bill for the server, or the people in charge get into a personal argument. Whatever the reason, suddenly, that archive is gone. And so is all of that fic, and all of that history. Wiped away with a keystroke.
Strikethrough and Boldthrough on LiveJournal were similar to the FFN purges. You can read the whole story here, but basically a group of radicals claiming people in fandom were writing child pornography got LJ to purge a bunch of forums and pages, including a rape survivor forum and people who had only written 18+ consensual slash fic. Yeah, no shock that it’s always the slash fic (slash means m/m fic, femslash is w/w) that gets attacked no matter how G rated it is. Once again, everyone woke up to their journals, their forums, their fanwork, their years of history, gone.
Can you see the pattern here? A corporation like Marvel (another entry on this list) will go after fansites, and because Marvel has so much money and so many lawyers, the site caves and does what Marvel asks. Or a bunch of annoying people speak up, usually about smut/porn, and the corporation (LiveJournal, Tumblr, DeviantArt, etc) will get rid of blogs, fanart, fanfic, etc without warning.
This is why fandom cannot trust corporations. Corporations are out there to protect themselves legally by any means necessary and to make profit by any means necessary. Fandom inevitably clashes with that. So, inevitably, the corporation is going to turn against us.
In China, as you saw on the list, it’s especially bad because it’s not just corporations, it’s the government itself. And the government can, has, and will jail people who make fanwork that goes against what the government feels is “good/moral,” like slash fic.
*this section here edited 10/22/19 to update information*
The most recent are the Tumblr purges. Ah, the Tumblr purges. “Pro-shipping” blogs are blogs that are, as the poster of the list themselves explained in a reblog of this post, anti-anti blogs. Anti-blogs and antis are people who are against shipping. Pro-shipping blogs are blogs that are very aggressively “ship whatever you want” and “antis go away.” You’d know if you had a pro-shipping blog. So unless you have one of those, you’re good. I don’t really know the details about this one since that’s not really my discourse wheelhouse so you might want to ask around to get more information.
*okay we’re all updated now, back to the rest of the post*
And of course most of us know about the NSFW ban. Tumblr has a major problem with porn bots. Instead of staffing more people (Tumblr employs FAR too few people to handle the kind of upkeep this site needs) and having actual humans search through and find the porn blogs to delete them (which would be exceedingly easy, trust me, these porn blogs are not hard to find), they just let it keep being a problem. Eventually this led to Tumblr’s phone app being banned from the app store for inappropriate content.
Again, instead of dealing with this maturely and getting rid of the porn blogs, Verizon decided that all NSFW content was banned, and set about deleting all blogs they deemed NSFW. There is now an algorithm that determines if a post you made is NSFW, and it’s flagged and hidden, and you have to petition to get an actual human to look at it and decide if it’s NSFW or not. This algorithm, as I’m sure you can imagine, is absolute SHIT at finding actual NSFW material and will flag the most random BS.
Again, this is an example of a corporation purging and destroying our material. LGBT+ blogs discussing safe sex practices/giving sex advice, sex workers/cam girls who could safely use this site to make a living, rape discussion/survivor blogs, fanwork, people’s fun porn sideblogs, all of it once again destroyed.
Fun.
In just March/April of this year, in fact, several people’s blogs were deleted with no warning and for no reason. My dear friend @qqueenofhades lost her blog for weeks, and she and I and other friends had to petition tumblr daily to get it back (I sent so many emails that one tumblr tech got snarky with me). My darling @koortega suffered the same issue before getting her blog back. Alas, our dear @mearcatsreturns wasn’t so lucky–her original blog, and her years of work on it, were lost forever. Tumblr still hasn’t (to my knowledge) properly explained what happened, although it is telling that a lot of these blogs were queer-friendly, fandom-heavy content generators.
As the list said, this is why we need Ao3 and we need a solution for other kinds of fanwork like videos and fanart. This is why we can’t trust corporations to have our best interests at heart. This is why, despite all of us continuing to use tumblr, we need to find another solution for our fan blogging needs because they will screw us over again and again (until I become rich and famous and can buy this hellsite and run it properly dammit that is my lifelong dream don’t judge me).
I don’t think you’re in danger of getting deleted without warning, nonny. The company that now owns Tumblr seems to have a pretty good track record of running sites, and at least warning people before deleting shit. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen again. I live in a state of… don’t be paranoid, but be ready, if that makes sense? Think of it like having an earthquake/tornado/hurricane first aid kit in your home. You aren’t constantly thinking about how you might need that kit for a natural disaster, but when that natural disaster hits, you have that kit ready.
Some people have backed up their blogs (I’m not sure how but you can google it or ask around). Others put their fic onto Ao3 (I backed up all my FFN fic onto Ao3 in 2016 for this very reason even though my FFN fic is, for the most part, utter crap). But we don’t have a long-term solution, which is what concerns people and is why that person made that list–to remind us of what we’ve lost and that we’re still in danger of it happening again.
I wish I had a better solution for you, nonny. I wouldn’t live in fear, if I were you? But I would ask around, and see if there’s a way to back up your blog. Because hurricanes do blow in.

Real Person Fanfiction (”RPFs”)
I have mixed feelings about RPFs. On one hand, everyone has fantasies about being famous and falling in love with x celebrity. I totally support writing out your fantasies or starting out with fantasies to practice writing. All writing is generally good practice writing. And most fics based on movies/tv are using the actor/actress in mind so how much of a difference is there? On the other, if I were said celebrity I’d be so creeped out by some of the smut written about me. Some don’t care and are like, “keep it coming! lol” Others are super creeped out about it and people do NOT RESPECT boundaries. Like I’ve heard stories where members of One Direction would be SENT NSFW fan creations, even after explicitly stating they don’t want it and in any other situation/work place that would be considered sexual harassment.
Honestly, it is sexual harassment and no one (famous or not) deserves that. Just because a person is a movie/music/whatever star does not mean they give up the right to feel safe. It also doesn’t give everyone else free reign to sexualize them in public.
Don’t even get me started if said celebrity is under age. Like honestly if there is a god and we’re smote tomorrow solely based on the fact that humans would sexualize kids, I’d be like “You know what? We deserve it. Humans are trash. Smite away.”
Like I can’t even imagine the complete utter lack of social graces or awareness you’d have to have in order  to think in any universe that it’d be ok to directly send a celebrity explicit content that you created unprompted. It literally boggles my mind and I legit think these people give fans a bad name and I would never want to be associated with anyone like that. For the most part I think most fans and fanfic writers know this portion of the social contract and are fine. It’s the minority that don’t that cause problems and why RPFs get banned.
Like if people knew how to behave, then maybe it wouldn’t be such a big deal and ff.net would allow it. But I totally understand banning it.
So I have written “adult” scenes that feature characters from movies and therefore used the actors/actresses’ likeness. The movie came out before the books and I haven’t read them either. So there’s no doubt that when I’m writing, I’m using their likeness in mind. So I would say my writing, and Descendant’s/movie/tv show fanfiction in general, is not that far off from RPFs. I also would never SEND my fic to Booboo Stewart, Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, or Sophia Carson. I’m under the assumption that they would never read the fic and basically no harm no foul. I’d probably die of embarrassment if they ever did. Like I would literally make the news: “Local citizen dies of the first case of fatal embarrassment. More at 11.”
So I think that’s the standard everyone should work under. Let your creative juices fly, even if it takes you to some freaky deaky place. BUT DON’T SEND IT TO WHOM IT’S WRITTEN ABOUT.
I think it’s rare that a celebrity asks for smut in any form. If they have, fine. Send away and lets hope they know what they got themselves into it. Some have admitted to searching for it on their own volition. Again, hope they know what they’re getting themselves into. I know I’ve wanted to see stuff but regretted what I found. I think we’ve all gone too far down the rabbit hole and wished we could un-see things.
And even if they did ask for stuff, they also have the right to change their mind or put caveats on what is sent. “When I asked for sexy stuff, I thought it would be naked drawings of me with 8 pack abs and a huge wang doodle, was not expecting to see myself fuck Sonic the Hedgehog while riding Rainbow Dash in Narnia while a night elf watched and whacks off to the side.”
And I know they know this stuff exists. And being famous and attractive, it’s almost guaranteed content will be created around you. With that comes explicit content. Porn has been around since forever, it’s basically human nature. Most adult celebrities know that sex sells. But celebrities have the choice and the right to not see it.
I would never force any story I made on whomever it’s written about, adult content or not. I think that’s an important distinction.
Given all that, if anyone from Descendant’s was like, “You know what Psych? I’m not comfortable with those scenes.” I would totally delete them, assuming I can muster it before I die of embarrassment. I feel like my story could totally stand on its own sans adult scenes. Super not a big deal to me, and that’s how everyone should operate. Like these are not our characters and we don’t have an unencumbered right to their likenesses, even if we write original stuff.
So with RPFs, please don’t be weird and send it to them. Otherwise, happy writing. Please tag so I can read it too.

Something they don’t talk about 01
Notes: this fic is kind of RPF but not a treditional one. Characters in this fic are mostly dancers from the R&J French musical tour cast. Some of them actually never worked together. Because the dancer crew are different every tour.
I wrote it in Chinese first and then translated into English. And I’m not good at English. There will be many grammar mistakes and sentence that doesn’t make sense. I apologize.
For now there are only four people mentioned:
Andrea, danced in the 2012 Japan tour, 2015 Korean tour, 2018 Chinese tour and 2019 Russian tour, as Montague
Cristian, in 2018 Chinese tour,as Montague
McCarthy, in 2015 Korean tour, as Montague
Julie, in 2015 Korean tour, as Capulet
The relationship between characters are mostly based on their performance on stage, but also mixed with what they are off stage in daily life.
I guess no one have any clue who they are here on tumblr 😂, but we do have a fandom of it in some Chinese R&J fans. Well. If anyone are interested in this fandom, feel free to ask me anything. About their relationship in real life and characteristics they show on stage. And photos. Like, too much photos. Cause these people, these talented dancers as well as actors, they certainly ship themselves.
This story still happens in Verona, but focused on normal people not the original Romeo and Juliette. They will be mentioned in the future, also Benvolio and Mercutio and Tybalt and Paris and so on. But they are not the main Characters, is all. Kind of living in the background.
ABO setting/rape/incest/basically everyone fucks everyone
Omega!Andrea, Alpha!McCarthy, Alpha!Julie
Cristian still a teenager hasn’t transformed yet
There are too much settings in the background but I kind of jump into the middle part and start writing whatever this is. Wish I could make it clear in the further updates.
Something They don’t Talk about 01
1
"Cristian!" McCarthy shouted gleefully at the other side of the bar across the barren, "used to wet the bed when he was a kid! And it was me who have to save his ass every time!"
The little boy stared anxiously, the bartender who he had just flirted with, heard it, couldn't help but laugh, and with love, took Cristian's furry head into her chest, rubbing it like a puppy rub.
Damn, Cristian was forced to get closer to that white breasts because of this rub, and smelled the sweet fragrance from the lovely lady. He flushed, and can’t decide if he was shamed because of being shattered in the crowds, or because he was close to her breasts. This really is nothing at all. He has seen those girls who always wonder in the alleys of the shadow zone. Their lips are too red to be natural, and those faces unhealthily pale. Their eyes under the heavy makeup watching the potential customers passing by, wearing skirt with a low neckline can hardly cover the Soft chest. He should get used to this scene.
When he returned to reality, the bartender had already gone to serve other guests. McCarthy held a bottle of wine in his hand and smirked at him. Cristian tightened his teeth, and then, the glass of wine was taken away by another hand.
Seeing who that hand belongs, Christian turned his face into the shadow in a hurry. Who else can it be, only his brother. McCarthy didn't finish his surprising cry, and was pushed away by Andrea grabbing his elbow. The boy hid himself in the crowd, feeling a little frightened. Andrea didn't see him, did he? Montague boys who are younger than him these days can blow wine bottles to show off their great triumph against Capulet, and only Andrea has always written a ban on alcohol in their rules. With his brother beside him, Cristian can never get to taste even a drop of alcohol. Andrea rarely took him to the bar. Only occasionally, once or twice, Cristian was only allowed to drink sweet fruit juice bitterly when all of his friends try their best to get drunk.
The wine in his own hands somehow lost his interest. Cristian looked at the remaining half of the liquid and poured it into his stomach in one shot. It was not bad to drink, but also not as magical as others have preached. Andrea didn't look at him, and in a second he had pulled McCarthy into the corner of the bar, can’t tell when he would leave. Cristian believed that he hadn't noticed himself, but he can never be too careful. He quickly put on his coat and walked down the secret path he had found to his house. If he arrives home later and is asked by Andrea, he will have to make up an excuse, which he really wants to avoid.
2
The little area of skin where the arm was held was slightly warm, and McCarthy leaned against the wall along Andrea's strength. He watched as the wine returned to his hand and raised an eyebrow at the other.
Andrea sighed and wrapped his hands around his chest. "How old are you," he didn't look at McCarthy, and he slumped against the wall with his heels. “too old for this trick, I believe.”
"Hey, how dare you to stop me mention it,” The dark-skinned man swallowed his wine and shrugged. “after all, this is all done by your son. It can’t be more real, and I didn't lie about it."
"You're vengeance, and some tiny stuffs over ten years ago can make you think of it now." There are smile hides in Andrea’s voice. He grabbed McCarthy's wine and gave himself a sip, then shoved it back into his hands.
"That puppy pissed and vomited on my hand or chest more than a dozen times. I just avenged it, and it was bright and upright in the lobby," McCarthy said, pointing his chin to the bar. "Get the drink yourself, don’t try to steal mine. "
Andrea shook his head, raised one hand to rub his neck. “I just need a sip. Drinking too much will make trouble in the coming days."
The meaning behind this words was already too familiar to McCarthy. He recalled the overheating temperature on his arm and turned to look at Andrea's already sweaty forehead, and the smile on his face suddenly gone.
"So you still need me this time."
"I know, I know," Andre interrupted him, "I said, you have your life. I'm looking for you ... depend on what you want, you can refuse. I mean that.”
It wasn't willing or unwilling at all, McCarthy rolled his eyes in his mind. He knows that Andrea doesn't trust any strange Alphas. In fact, it’s already quite brave for him to not mind having Alpha being close to his personal distance during the daily life. Consider what he had been through. It is impossible for him to pick anyone from the bar to solve his heat. If McCarthy doesn't help, chances are he will choose to go through it for days alone, in a very unhealthy way.
At least they've tried alcohol, and it only makes the situation worse, so that’s not in the consideration.
"The mark is obviously a better solution," McCarthy replied. "It's you who don't want it, not me."
"Why, have you been so fucked up these years?" Andrea laughed at him, "has fallen to the point of binding me for life?"
As if he cared, McCarthy thought silently. He had gone to bed with Alpha almost as often as with Omega, and most his lovers had no natural conditions for the mark thing at all. However, they did not continue the discussion. This time, like many previous times, stopped halfway with no results.
3
Cristian never liked McCarthy, but the boy felt that the problem was not with himself. He couldn't figure out what was wrong with this man, always playing tricks on him, and making jokes that awkward him in the public. The elated looks on that man’s face just made his fists tighten. And his scent. It's not that Cristian hates McCarthy's scent, but there are times that the scent of him just raise his angry—especially when it is sticking on his brother.
He knew that his brother and McCarthy were at the close of life and death. After his mother's death, thanks to McCarthy's help, Andrea got to raise him to the light without illness or disaster. If anything, McCarthy could have saved his life. When he was young, Cristian thought he was his elder brother's Alpha. When he grow up and know better, he find out that there was no actual biological connection between them. In theory, this is not a responsible behavior, but as he sees more around him, the boy gradually get used to it. It is natural to say that this is the case in Verona.
That night, Cristian arrived home first, but until he got up the next day, Andrea was still not back at home. Cristian cooked oatmeal with more water than needed, and used it to wash down two pieces of dry toast. The Master Montague found him a job in the mill, and there’s only minutes before work. He left the bowl on the table, put on his shoes in a hurry, and locked the door. No matter where his brother was, Cristian believed that it’s nothing for him to worry about.
4
When Julie met McCarthy again, he was driving a carriage on his way out of the city, carrying the goods that Montague is going to sell. She waved, confident enough that he would stop the carriage for her.
McCarthy did park in front of her.
"Wow," Julie sniffed. "I smell the scent of Andrea."
The man in the driver's seat did not answer her, but just asked, "What are you doing here?"
"If I said I was waiting for you, you wouldn't believe it," Julie made a polite smirk. "I know you are going to Vicenza, count me in, got some personal business there to be done."
McCarthy didn't think to resist, he moved to the side of the seat, and Julie flipped up easily, with one foot up and stepping on the railing of the carriage.
"So, how do you know I'm going to Vicenza?" The man pretended to be casual.
"Oh," Julie said with a sincere smile this time, "Though I love you, Chris, there are some secrets that cannot be shared with Montague."
McCarthy didn't ask, but mumbled some swear of Capulets, and start the carriage again. He didn't mind a partners on the business trip, not to mention that this partner was Julie Galopin. There is no Montague or Capulet in Vicenza. They could do whatever they wanted, and be whoever they want to be.
