about + summary: riddlie boo becomes a lil obsessed with u aka baddie server at the diner also posting this on my break yolo swag i love y’all bye omg also gender neutral reader
word count ~ 1700+
perfection was something that never existed yet so many strived for, no person nor their actions could be perfect no matter how hard and deliberately someone would work for it. although, to believe someone was truly perfect is another view on this topic.
edward (gross ass name) nashton would be the definition of star-struck whenever you walked over to pour him a cup of coffee each night he would he would visit the run down diner. an old mom and pop shop that opened some time in the late eighties and still managing to keep a flowing business in the present day.
the accountant with the green jacket was always a regular, coming in after work becoming a regular occurrence. if he was not there when the sun began to set he would definitely be there in the earliest hours of the morning. hunched over against the counter he always sat at, pen in hand as his hands wrote and crossed out numerous words with a cup of coffee always set beside him.
during one of the earliest hours of the night, your shift began at exactly midnight. thankfully nothing too crazy had happened in the past hour, numerous college students attempted to pull all nighters for any due assignments the following day. other than that it was strange how calm and quiet this night was. leaning against the counter with a magazine sprawled in front of you, you flipped through the pages as the jingle of the bell alerted you that a new customer came in.
looking up, you were greeted with your favorite regular, eddie. he waves as you greet him back with a smile to your face. it had been about a few months that eddie had become your favorite customer, and you were eddie's favorite server. you never had to plaster a painful fake smile or pretend to care about their awful jokes and any boring conversation for larger tips on your pay check.(coming from a bitch who works at food service this sucks but them tips be worth it)
"the usual coffee?" you asked eddie as he sat down.
"yes please, thank you. how are you [name?]" taking out his beat up note pad to write down all his ideas running through his head. eddie would love to tell you about his  future plans for the city of gotham and what he began to plan to deal with bruce wayne. though, he didn't want you to run away. especially to the police. you were perfect and sweet, the kindness you served him was genuine and never out of pity.
"not too bad actually," you begin to ramble out about your day leading up to work whilst fixing the coffee for eddie. more sugar than milk just the way he liked it, sliding the mug over to him he nods as a thank to not interrupt your little ramble. now talking about a movie you saw earlier today and why exactly you had a burning distaste for one of the lead roles.
"what's this?" eddie asked as you slid him a piece of pumpkin pie across the counter.
"for you!"
"but i didn't order a-"
"eddie," you stop him while his face begins to burn up. the tips of his ears, his cheeks, and nose had begun to flush up and you giggle, "it's for you! from me to you."
"oh no i can't-"
"eddie," you state as you cupped his hands in yours. they're cold, from the night air biting his skin but yours were warm enough to thaw the bitter ice away. eddie burns up even more, turning his head from embarrassment as he retrieves one hand to adjust his glasses.
kindness always seemed to unsettle eddie, in his youth he was met with blistering torment of others turning their backs and shunning him. casting him out and away from society, loneliness being his only comfort from laughing faces and pointing fingers. when shown the slightest drops of kindness, it was always for the other's benefit. belittling as well as ridiculing poor eddie to untrust everyone, but there was something different in the way you talked to him. it was inviting, never gaining suspicion from your actions.
since the first day you interpreted that eddie was just some lonely nerd, easing him into conversation that immediatly suprised him. but with time did it develop into a friendship rather than a worker forcing kindness for larger tips. eddie still tipped though, even when you offered free baked goods and coffee since your boss never cared.
"thank you," he finally replies with his rounded cheeks puffing with crimson shades, traveling to the tips of his ears as you noticed.
continuing the night, you made your rounds serving coffee to the other two or three customers scattered about in the diner before retreating next to the seat beside eddie. talking for hours before needing to sweep the ragged tile floors once more and flip the open sign to "closed" until a few hours for the morning shift.
eddie bid you goodbye and promised to come next afternoon, before walking through the doors you made him swear by it with the old pinky promise. he laughs and agrees, linking his in yours. noting that his fingers were shaking yet you never minded, he was sweet and waved goodbye.
gathering your belongings, you begin the relief of walking back to your apartment as you pondered about how you would ask eddie to hang out with you the following day. he mentioned numerous novels he adored, even giving you one of his favorites that were littered in tabs and of annotations. reading his thoughts as you glided your fingers across the writing. perhaps you'd ask if he'd like to accompany you to the new bookstore downtown?
finally reaching inside your apartment, greeted by no one, you settled down for the night. slipping into the sheets after freshening up, staring at the ceiling above you whilst waiting for the sweet release of sleep to overcome you. to finally escape from reality for a few hours.
eddie believed you were an incredibly kind and sweet person, the only one who never took advantage of him and one he would want to consider a "friend." having kept the pens you gave him and little napkins of doodles. cluttered in the corner he had of some of your other belongings he stole when you paid no attention. compared to the disgusting city of gotham, you were pure. a saint from heaven herself in this god forsaken town that needed to be rebirthed. a change from the sin filled streets, riddled with criminals and corrupt systems.
he'd been watching you the entire time, just him taking precaution that you were the person you acted to be. with the truth disclosing the generosity you held he felt at ease yet intrigued. eddie admired you and soon obsessed with you. photos of you covered the corner of his desk inside the cluttered apartment he owned. easily being able to watch you from his window, watching as you struggled to fall asleep tonight.
an old, ragged phone was held in his hand. nothing new and could be easily destroyed if necessary. entering the correct buttons to add a new message, eddie typed in your phone number. how did he get it? who knows... but really who is surprised? love can make someone do odd things, but maybe eddie was confusing love with obsession. he begins typing his message.
who on earth would be texting you during the early hours of the night? your phone dings as the bright screen washes over you, checking the unknown number and their message.
<?> hello...
<?> would you like to solve a riddle? [name?]
no fear washed over you, just confusion as you didn't want to deal with random strangers when you wanted to rest. eddie waited for your response.
no
he types.
<?> oh just one please?
<?> it won't be hard i promise! please?
you were about to say no again before the stranger starts typing again.
<?> riddle me this...what can be one's greatest strength but also greatest weakness?
eddie excitedly waited for your response, taking a second or two before getting the little chime that you responded. only thing was, his face twisted in confusion.
"why did they like their own message?" he asks to no one.
your message simply said 'ratio' with a heart showing you liked your own message. eddie typed again.
<?> did you not understand the riddle? would you like another one?
<?> i can give you an easier one.
he didn't want you to stop responding, from the phone he looks out the window watching your tired state
no i don’t
<?> do you even know who you're talking to?
no
eddie huffs, upset as your reaction was not at all as the one he predicted in his head. he sent you a message disclosing himself as the riddler, the one seen on the news and who many began to fear. at this point you didn't believe it and didn't care.
so?
<?> so what???
in disbelief, eddie began insulting and sending crude remarks about you. message after message blowing up your phone. only growing impatient and angry at how you truly did not care.
dont care + L + bozo + ratio
<?> you better start watching your back from now on
blocked and reported tbh... goodnight <3
before eddie could respond, you had immediatly blocked this phone number and shut off your phone to finally retire for the night. eddie watched, stunned in disbelief. watching your sleeping state calmly inhale and exhale as he planned on what he would do with you next.

Those Titles! By Layla Reyne
Knowing I have books out there with whiskey and beer titles will forever be one of the great joys of my author career. As a foodie, pairing food and drink is always a fun. Pairing titles with plots, in both Agents Irish and Whiskey and Trouble Brewing, was even more fun. Want to know how I came up with those Trouble Brewing beer titles? With Gravity Craft Brewery? Read on!
Imperial Stout – This title ties closely to FBI Agent Cameron Byrne, a Boston-Irish Southie who’s recently relocated to the Bay Area. Cam prefers the heavy stout-style beers like Guinness, Beamish and Murphy’s. (Don’t tell Cam, but Goose Island Reserve is my favorite stout!) Imperial Stout is a type of stout but a slightly different style (higher alcohol) than traditional stouts. With Cam going undercover in this book, it was a cool twist on the title too.
Craft Brew – In this Book 2, Cam’s fledging relationship with federal prosecutor Dominic Price is put to the test. Cam struggles with the cold case that’s haunted him and his family for decades—the disappearance of his sister—while Nic deals with threats from his father’s loan shark lender. Each must be at the top of their game, the best at their craft, and when family and friends enter the picture, they must dance carefully, mix things just right, or risk an explosion.
Noble Hops – Much like the Book 1 title was tied to Cam, Book 3’s title is tied closely to Nic. “Noble Hops,” in brewing terms, refers to the traditional “founding” hops/families of early beer making in Europe. Given that Trouble Brewing as a series deals with family—biological and found—and this Book 3 deals with Nic’s in particular—formerly a wealthy, powerful family that’s sunk into disrepute—a beer title that referenced the “founding families” of beer made sense. And let’s not discount the nobility of these guys (and the entire Whiskey Verse crew).
Gravity Craft Brewery
Nic co-owns Gravity Craft Brewery. When imagining a brewery name and logo, I drew on brewing and local inspiration. “Gravity” in beer-making refers to the amount of solids (sugar) dissolved in water. There are three gravity measurements – Original, Specific and Final. Gravity, for ex-SEAL Nic and former SEAL teammate and brewery co-owner, Eddie, was also something they had to deal with on missions, be it jumps or dives. As for the logo itself, all around the area where I/Cam & Nic live and where Gravity is located used to be apricot orchards. As such, the falling apricot is a salute to my home and a play on “gravity.” All my love and gratitude to Morgan and Jess, dear friends who have been with me since my fanfic days, who helped translate my words into this amazing logo design!
Excerpt
“You sure piped down from when you first came in here.” Cam looped both arms around his neck. “Thought you were going to tear the bar apart.”
“That’s about how I felt, then.” He grasped Cam’s bare forearms—warm, muscled, and solid, the dark hairs prickling his fingertips. He never wanted to let go. “Closer, now.”
“Closer?” Cam’s voice dropped an octave.
Nic felt that kind of closer too. They hadn’t had much time for foreplay lately. He missed it, wanted to draw this out a little longer. And to celebrate a small victory here at the end of a day full of ups and downs. “Closer to nailing Vaughn and Bowers. To ending this.” He tightened his hold. “This could work, Cam. I’ve been playing at confident, bluffing, but I believe it now. We’ve got leads on all fronts. I just need the evidence, then I can put charge sheets in front of the grand jury. I can taste the indictments.”
Cam inched closer, elbows dipping. “If I get you the evidence, and we end this, then what happens?”
Nic coasted his hands up, over the rolled cuffs of Cam’s sleeves, over his shoulders, to his neck, fingers teasing the ends of his hair. “We move on, with the rest of our lives.”
Cam likewise wove his hands into Nic’s hair, playing along with a sexy smile. “And what life is that?”
Wanting to play, to keeping drawing this out, Nic waited until he was an inch from Cam’s lips, the agent drawing him in, then slipped off the barstool and ducked under Cam’s arm. Grinning, arms spread, he was far too proud of his far too simple maneuver, but he felt lighter than he had in days. He was going to enjoy this, while he could.
Cam laughed even as he cursed. “Fucking SEAL.”
Rushing back into his arms, Nic ate up Cam’s infectious laughter, swallowing it in a kiss and letting it fill his insides with warmth and love. Tasting victory. Maybe, just maybe, happily ever after was within reach, despite it seeming so far away forty-eight hours ago.
Cam had unfastened half his shirt buttons by the time Nic came back to his senses, remembering the future he wanted to show his boyfriend. He slipped his hold again, drawing a frustrated growl from Cam. “Worth it, I promise.” He grabbed Cam’s hand and tugged him toward the distillery. “Come with me.”

The fame activity: How Odell Beckham Jr. crashed the QB club - New York Giants Site
New Post has been published on https://othersportsnews.com/the-fame-activity-how-odell-beckham-jr-crashed-the-qb-club-new-york-giants-site/
The fame activity: How Odell Beckham Jr. crashed the QB club - New York Giants Site
The stars were out at the 2015 NBA All-Star Video game. Jay-Z, Beyonce, Monthly bill Clinton, Ben Stiller and Monthly bill Russell all roamed courtside at Madison Square Back garden. And beside them — searching like he belonged — stood New York Giants large receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
If just one minute solidified Beckham’s status as a home identify, it was Clinton inquiring the wideout for a image — according to Beckham’s good friend and existing Giants punter Brad Wing. A former president of the United States questioned for a image with a 22-calendar year-aged NFL player. It’s not your day-to-day interaction, even for a large receiver who stars for just one of the league’s flagship teams in the nation’s biggest marketplace.
Beckham experienced just concluded his second NFL period and experienced presently reached A-listing celebrity status. That does not materialize far too frequently in a sport exactly where the athletes’ faces are concealed by helmets. Most soccer players are identified by the identify on the back of their jersey alternatively than by their jaw structure or golden locks.
Beckham’s fame has reached unprecedented status in history time, in component since of a famous capture and freshness that was off the charts.

Contemplate the 2015 All-Star Video game. NBA players, together with LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, flocked in Beckham’s course. They exchanged hugs and handshakes, and Westbrook even arrived with a significant-5.
Beckham isn’t Tom Brady, the highest-ranked NFL player on ESPN’s Earth Fame 100. Brady was No. 21 on the listing. Other quarterbacks — Cam Newton, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning — are ranked bigger than Beckham, as well. But Beckham, ranked No. sixty four, is the most well known non-quarterback NFL player on the listing.
Odell Beckham Jr. rakes in $six million in sponsorship funds a calendar year. Listed here are the manufacturers he pitches:
Nike
Head & Shoulders
Dunkin’ Donuts
Steiner Sports activities
Roar Drinks
On the toughness of his shiny blond fauxhawk, Beckham is creating $six million in endorsements every year. He also enjoys a robust social media next on Instagram (8.six million followers), Twitter (2.five million) and Fb (1.4 million). Beckham was the NFL’s top player on social media about the past calendar calendar year, according to MVPindex, a social media intelligence system that analyzes athletes’ social media portfolios and calculates their electronic brand name value. Beckham’s social media footprint arrived in at a whopping $eighty two million from July 2016 to July 2017. He blew absent the level of competition. Brady was second with a social footprint really worth $forty four.9 million.
“Odell Beckham Jr. experienced a history-environment calendar year on social past period since he was ready to make exclusive, branded information that gave lovers an inside of glance into his vibrant temperament, daily life and design and style — both equally on and off the discipline,” claimed Kyle Nelson, co-founder and CMO of MVPindex. “He is been ready to money in on his particular brand name and connect with lovers, not to point out making real value for his company companions.”
Beckham has endorsement bargains with Nike, Head & Shoulders, Dunkin’ Donuts and Steiner Sports activities, among the other individuals.
And, Beckham is only 24 a long time aged. Contemplate, when Brady celebrated his 24th birthday, he was nonetheless a scrawny backup to Drew Bledsoe. At 24, Rodgers experienced hardly ever started a activity, Brees was having difficulties in San Diego, Manning was entering his initial comprehensive period as a starter, and Newton was much from a home identify with nary a dab to his identify.
Beckham was also recently ranked No. 1 on the Demand twenty five Below twenty five Index. The index actions the toughness of athletes’ manufacturers although underneath the age of twenty five, dependent on social media next and engagement, lookup success and news stories. Beckham also ranked fifth on the NFLPA Prime fifty Player Income Checklist for the 2016 period.
“He’s a rock star,” claimed new teammate Brandon Marshall, who has crossed paths and communicated with Beckham for many a long time. “There is no just one else in the NFL like him. We have hardly ever witnessed this in advance of.”
The beginnings
Odell Beckham Jr. rocketed to fame after this just one-handed grab from the Cowboys his rookie period. AP Image/Kathy Willens
Beckham declared himself to the entire world with a just one-handed touchdown capture in a Sunday evening decline from the Dallas Cowboys. When the ball trapped to his fingertips that November evening, it propelled the rookie from a promising player to a diverse stratosphere.
The day after that just one-handed capture, Beckham was scheduled to do a signing at Roosevelt Industry Shopping mall in Long Island. Hundreds of lovers packed the mall’s lower stage, forcing New York’s most recent star to be shuffled by stability by means of the bowels of the building with cameras for shops like TMZ (as well as reporters and lovers) stalking his every single transfer.
This was Beckham’s new fact. He wasn’t just a successful initial-spherical decide. Quickly, he was having texts from Michael Jordan and taking in meal with LeBron James. Everybody wanted a piece of the hot new star.
At the Tremendous Bowl after his rookie period, Beckham advised a tale about heading to the mall in Arizona. A couple kids started next him, then a couple a lot more. Soon there were 20 or thirty young children trailing him.
“It’s Odell. He just cannot go out in general public. It’s that outrageous,” Giants basic safety Landon Collins claimed. “You just cannot stroll all-around with him. It’s frantic.”
It’s like that in New York, New Jersey or California. And it is no diverse in London or Germany. When Beckham was in Europe advertising the Giants-Rams activity, hundreds lined the Munich streets and chanted “OBJ, OBJ, OBJ.” Beckham performed to his lovers, climbing on the roof of a car or truck to assist them get a better glance.
It was a related scene in London past period in advance of the activity from the Rams. Followers speedily converged on a downtown Nike keep when they heard Beckham, Victor Cruz and a couple other Giants were creating an appearance. Pandemonium ensued as the throng strove to get a glimpse of just one of the sporting world’s biggest stars.
Little ones want to be like him and get in close proximity to him. It’s no accident that Nike recently awarded Beckham the most significant-ever shoe deal for an NFL player ($five million a calendar year) as youthful players attempt to replicate his glance.
“I really do not want to say I didn’t hope to be exactly where I’m at now, but I didn’t hope young children to be dying their hair blond,” Beckham claimed at his soccer camp past thirty day period. “I have all kinds of parents telling me, ‘My kid dyed his hair blond since of you.’ I didn’t imply for all that things to materialize.”
Cruz, now with the Chicago Bears, claimed his nephew, a huge Beckham lover, dyed his hair blond. The do has a daily life of its personal.
“The blond hair usually takes it to an additional stage,” Cruz claimed.

Why the attraction?
Beckham has opened his NFL vocation with a few seasons of 90-moreover catches, 1,three hundred-moreover yards and ten or a lot more touchdowns. He’s a a few-time Pro Bowler.
Beckham’s ascension is a rather odd phenomenon, even while he plays underneath the shiny lights in New York. It usually takes the perfect storm, even for a player of his caliber, to transcend soccer.
12 months Catches Yards TDs 2014 91 1,305 12 2015 96 1,450 thirteen 2016 101 1,367 ten Whole 288 4,122 35
The just one-handed capture admittedly performed its component. But other players have designed terrific plays. David Tyree pinned the soccer to his helmet late in a Tremendous Bowl nonetheless is almost never identified on the streets. Franco Harris was a Corridor of Fame player accountable for the Immaculate Reception. He hardly ever reached Beckham status.
But, there’s a lot more to Beckham’s reputation than just one magnificent play. He oozes swag, and it is not an accident. Beckham has a celebrity stylist who picks out every little thing he wears. He wears themed custom cleats intended by his good friend Kickasso. And then there’s the blond hair, which would seem to turn out to be lighter, a lot more outrageous and unique every single calendar year.
“He has the glance. He has the design and style,” former teammate Antrel Rolle claimed, in advance of incorporating that the poor-boy graphic also contributes to the equation. Beckham did, after all, lead a group of teammates down to Miami to social gathering with Justin Bieber the week in advance of the Giants’ 2016 playoff decline to the Eco-friendly Bay Packers.
Most either adore Beckham or despise him, in massive component since he does not disguise his feelings. He’s volatile and dramatic. The elaborate dancing and celebrations can be a turnoff. So can the shenanigans on and off the discipline.
Beckham was included in many incidents for the duration of his rookie calendar year. He fought former Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman for a few quarters for the duration of a December activity late in his second period. The two players were fined, and the NFL suspended Beckham just one activity.
Beckham was fined at the very least 6 occasions past calendar year for various offenses, together with berating an formal and taunting an opponent. Beckham has totaled $156,863 in fines — 3rd most considering the fact that he entered the league in 2014, according to ESPN Stats & Facts. Only Vontaze Burfict and Marshawn Lynch have accrued a lot more.
It’s all component of the contradiction that is Odell Beckham. He punched a gap in the Lambeau Industry wall after a playoff decline times after partying shirtless on a boat in Miami. But he has hardly ever been arrested or in difficulty with the legislation. He also sobbed uncontrollably in entrance of teammates after his canine died. It all can make him a intriguing figure.
“Obviously enjoying in New York assists a whole lot. The kid is an unbelievable talent, and his temperament goes together with it,” Wing claimed. “He’s a likable male. You have definitely spoken to him. [Followers are] drawn to his character. He’s a great kid. He has a huge heart.
“Whenever a person interacts with him they stroll absent like, ‘Wow, I didn’t hope him to be so nice’ or ‘He’s these types of a levelheaded kid we were sort of expecting a person else.’ I consider he wows a whole lot of persons when they finally meet him and realize he’s just a usual 24-calendar year-aged kid.”
The next challenge
It transpires all the time with youthful stars. They just cannot outrun the craziness. Beckham is fast, but his race from fame is unfamiliar.
The Giants have expressed worries regarding Beckham’s stardom. Owner John Mara has experienced many conversations with Beckham about his challenges on and off the discipline about the past a few a long time. General manager Jerry Reese claimed after the period that Beckham required to “grow up” and settle for the “responsibility [of] becoming just one of the faces of this franchise.”
Beckham has been late to events and stayed absent from organized team functions this spring. His personal mentor warned him past period about getting a distraction since of his sideline antics. It’s not an accident the Giants have nonetheless to open up contract conversations with their very best player. At the exact time, Mara has claimed he would acquire a roster comprehensive of Beckhams and wants him to be a Huge for daily life.
Odell Beckham Jr., hanging out with Von Miller at the 2016 NBA All-Star Video game, counts Michael Jordan and LeBron James among the his mates. Bob Donnan/United states Now Sports activities
“Sometimes we glance at these youthful athletes and we hope them to be exactly where LeBron is now at 33,” Marshall claimed. “You’re inquiring him to do that at 24. It’s not heading to materialize. Each and every male is diverse.”
Not many players possess Beckham’s unusual fame and reputation. But he has a alternatively compact near-knit internal circle consisting of typically family members (and Miami Dolphins large receiver Jarvis Landry) to maintain him in verify. His mother, Heather Van Norman, is his small business manager and pretty much normally by his aspect. His agent, Zeke Sandhu, handles his soccer and his internet marketing bargains. His father and stepfather are also there as sounding boards.
Couple other individuals definitely impact Beckham’s decisions.
“I really do not have to give him a great deal assistance,” Marshall claimed. “He has some terrific persons all-around him, and it is all component of the course of action. Every person has their personal maturation course of action. It’s not heading to be quick, and it is not heading to be perfect.”
Component of Beckham’s maturation will involve harnessing his seemingly unlimited emotion and repurposing it. He’ll will need to avoid the sideline antics and on-discipline scrapes that have led to fines and suspension.
“It sort of goes back to becoming a accountability,” Beckham claimed. “It’s a great detail. I just hardly ever definitely anticipated to be exactly where I’m at accurately now.”
Beckham is familiar with he can rise as the next Michael Strahan or Derek Jeter — or fizzle as the next Jeremy Shockey or Chad Johnson.
Strahan, a former Huge, is watching closely. He is familiar with a little some thing about extreme fame — initial as a star for the Giants and then as a television temperament with ABC. He talked to Beckham earlier this offseason and sees a youthful male with his priorities in buy.
“You’re not well known since you’re handsome. You are well known since you’re a terrific soccer player,” Strahan claimed. “And I consider with Odell, he realizes that, and every single calendar year he is persistently having better since he realizes that soccer, appropriate now for him in his daily life, is the primary detail and every little thing else is secondary.
“At the main of that, he’s hardly ever forgotten to acquire treatment of himself when it is time for him to be prepared and play the activity of soccer. I consider that is the only detail that most of us are involved about.”

The man behind a bold new movie exposing Scientology was physically threatened by the church
Since the release of Alex Gibney’s Emmy-winning documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” and the A&E series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” fascination over the Church of Scientology has been at an all-time high.
Now the church is being examined through the unique style of BBC filmmaker Louis Theroux. Known as the Michael Moore of Britain, Theroux often stars in his docuseries projects featuring off-beat cultural subjects like “America’s Most Medicated Kids” and “Twilight of the Porn Stars.” “My Scientology Movie,” Theroux’s first feature film (directed by John Dower), is less of a broad historic look at Scientology, like Gibney’s film, and more a spotlight on the alleged incidents church members have experienced under the thumb of current Scientology leader David Miscavige.
“I had tried to do something on Scientology in 2002, but I reengaged with the subject after our producer Simon Chinn read the Lawrence Wright New Yorker piece [in 2011],” Theroux told Business Insider of the documentary, which opens in theaters and is available on streaming/VOD Friday.
The film follows Theroux as he travels to Los Angeles to investigate what goes on at the church’s headquarters. With the church unwilling to cooperate, Theroux enlists ex-Scientology executive Marty Rathbun (who also stars in “Going Clear”) to give insight into what goes on there.
This then leads to Theroux asking Rathburn to help him in casting reenactments of incidents that allegedly happened to church members, many of which involve the church’s leader, David Miscavige, bullying and physically abusing Scientologists.
As with “Going Clear,” making “My Scientology Movie” involved lawyers dissecting every piece of footage in the final cut to make sure BBC Films and others with stakes in the film weren’t making themselves legally vulnerable.
Due to differences in laws in the UK versus the US, Theroux believes “My Scientology Movie” was scrutinized more by its lawyers than “Going Clear.”
“When you don’t have access to a subject and all you have is ex-members and critics, there is this gravitational pull toward telling a certain version of events,” Theroux said. “Scientology would say this, and they have a point, that it’s like doing a portrait of a marriage in which you’re only hearing from the ex-wife and not the ex-husband. So as a journalist it’s this nagging feeling that I’m not getting the full picture.”
In the movie, many title cards giving information about alleged incidents also include counter-statements from the church. But Theroux believes Scientology’s side comes through most clearly in its actions during filming.
In a few instances, Theroux finds camera crews, apparently Scientologists, filming him making the movie. (Scientology informed Theroux that it’s making a film on him.) Rathburn also films alleged Scientology members harassing him.
“When they show up saying they are making their own film on me, or filming Marty, as a viewer you no longer have that thought, ‘I wonder how Scientology would characterize this?’ It strengthens the film,” Theroux said.
But Theroux admits he may have gone too far in a key moment in the film. Following an encounter Rathburn has with alleged church members, Theroux and Rathburn discuss the incident, with Theroux reminding Rathburn that when he was in Scientology these were the kind of tactics he instructed people to use on ex-members. This sets Rathburn off, and he curses out Theroux.
“I think I was probably over the line,” Theroux said. “Every screening I’ve been in when that moment plays, it’s tense and people think, ‘I don’t know what I feel about this.'”
But director John Dower believes it needed to be addressed.
“Louis needs to ask that question because Marty had consistently batted it away so many times before,” he said. “It so happens that’s the only time he could get an answer out of him.”
“My Scientology Movie” offers the impression that even if you decide to leave the church, members will never leave you alone — especially if you go public with what goes on inside it.
Since filming wrapped, those involved with the movie have thought the church was behind bizarre moments in their lives.
Dower knows his Instagram account was hacked by the church because, according to Dower, Scientology officials admitted to doing it in one of their cease-and-desist letters to the BBC regarding the film.
Then there are the threats toward Theroux.
The morning of his interview with Business Insider, Theroux was locked out of his email account due to, as he called it, “suspicious activity.” Police told him some of the activity came from Clearwater, Florida, headquarters of Scientology.
And a few months ago, the police came to his house telling him they’d been tipped that someone wanted to do bodily harm to him due to his Scientology movie. The church, in fact, was involved.
“I asked the police where the threat came from and they said Scientology called them saying they had heard it,” Theroux said. (According to the filmmaker, police told him Scientology said in its tip that it was “concerned” for his “well-being.”)
“I was like hold on, that doesn’t sound right,” Theroux said. “They were the ones who made the call? Now I’m on a special list where if I call the police they are on the fast track to where I am. But my take is it sounded like Scientologists were just trying to wind me up by getting the police to come to my house.”
Numerous attempts to contact Scientology to comment for this story were not successful.
