Amaarae’s name will be quite familiar with anyone following Nigerian music by now, as she’s been featured on seemingly every release that’s come out of the country’s dynamic altè scene in the past few years. For her debut album, the singer/producer establishes her solo songwriting chops with a hazy R&B-laced minimalism that perfectly complements her distinctively wispy vocals. On the satirical single “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY,” Amaarae attaches these elements to a syncopated 3/2 clave rhythm common in African music and later inherited by Latin ritmos across the pond. The song actually sparked a modern version of this South-South musical transfusion when it was remixed by Colombian-American pop star Kali Uchis, creating a song so intensely danceable it spawned an entire TikTok subgenre.

Kelela anuncia ‘RAVE:N The Remixes’ y comparte un primer adelanto | SINGLE, 2023
Tumblr media

Critical evaluation of chosen artists
I will critically draw on these various contemporary artists who attempt to portray the layers in which mental illness manifest itself. Most artists choose to present people at the centre of their art such as Kim Noble, Amina Benbouchta and Leila Alaoui in a very distant and hollowed and fragmented way.
The expression and body language in all artists mentioned above depict vulnerability and uncertainty that is heavily ingrained in everyday practises, particularly those photos by Leila Alaoui whos candid photos poignantly depict the Moroccan youth in such a natural and realistic setting, in the everyday habitual state, habitual body language, location and dress, all tainted by the subliminal dream of a better life abroad.
I draw a connection with the approach of Algerian born artist, Patrick Altès and his piece titled Tolerance, that depicts the British flag with various stereotyped figured painted across it, with the painting by one of Kim nobles personalities, Ria Pratt, titled My hands are tied. Both figures chose to use deep blue background and vibrant reds as well as faceless figures in expressive body positions.
Both Noble and Altes’s art evoke Matisse, who also suffered from mental affliction, with their use of body like figures and the blending of colours to form rich tones and stark opposition, portraying moods of solemn transition. They both aim to express the different problems in a similar manner using faceless figures, but using stark contrast with red and blue to juxtapose the differing realities one has when they are held down by a mental affliction, whether it be multiple personality disorder (ria pratt) or prejudicial racism (Patrick Altes).
Both Noble and Atles aim to bridge the gap of understanding and create a sense of dialogue through bodily expressions and colour by creating a sense of human suffering, as well as a human difference but human similarity at both their cores. Both artists explore the notion of the third dimension within a two-dimensional piece with their use of layering much like the work of Saladi in this regard. I intend to use two-dimensional layering in my piece however I will not mirror these artists and have the colours placed on top of each other, as I want to create a distinct separation between the notion of first generations settlers lives before their migration and their feelings and attitudes after making the journey to the UK with colour and materials.
