Marchae’s Katy Perry Syllabus (and more!)

Again somewhat unexpectedly, we’ve had more to say to each other since our initial Reaction to Katy Perry’s “Bon Appetit” (which you can read here!).

First, Liz was sad to have been busy during our chat, and had a few things to add. Here’s a slightly abridged continuation of our group text (this first few bits are in real-time as she watched the video):

I bet she had a body double for the flour scene at the start It's a welcome departure from her lollipop boob video self The artsy fartsy in me and the vegetarian in me is like YAS TO THIS but maybe it gets gross Why is the rap part like basic rap video then w hands full of cash...?

LIZ: i didn’t read everything but I agree with marchae’s food porn comment and that kris’s idea that the lyrics might undermine her could mean that the statement this feels like its making (YOU WANNA TREAT WOMEN LIKE MEAT IN A MUSIC VIDEO.. HERE YOU FUCKING GO.. IM IN A STEW) could just be coincidental or a happy surprise in an attempt to make people pay attention to this/ for shock value...

also how much of the pop culture we consume could be described as an “unproductive conflict”? probably so much!

but.. i want to know (not that it matters) who directed this/ who had this vision because that matters to ME at least

MIRI: Yeah, that is important and we didn’t really touch on it. We did talk about KP’s level of control as an artist some

LIZ: i was definitely here for it.. and this is my favorite KP, but I don’t even like the song and i think if I listened first, I would have maybe liked it less? I can’t tell if I think having a more avant garde (as far as KP is concerned) video juxtaposed with a stock rap video (sort of) is racist or purposeful or if that was requested by that artist? Maybe I am falling for the trap of the vid tho.. like she is just a pop star and probably was just told what to do here and that is part of the problem, which makes this semi provocative video/message totally null? IDK but miri i get why you were so urgent this morning

UR So Gay (2007)

A song that’s lyrically problematic for me. Critics disagreed in some instances calling it “ a song that pummel[s] straight guys who can’t handle her [perry’s] edge.”

Hot n Cold (2008)

Co-written by perry describing an unstable relationship. (Boo should have left long before getting to the wedding. Video also includes interesting hints at gender identity!

Thinking of You (2009)

Video is incredibly cinematic. Her voice here reminds me of Alanis Morissette. Aside from a few lyrics that seem very young I like this song a lot.

(This was the only song on the album to NOT reach the top 20)

The One That Got Away (2010)

MY FAVORITE VIDEOOOOO and I adore this song so much. I personally feel like this song is where she begins to define herself.

Last Friday Night (2011)

What I would define as fun Katy. Nothing to note. Very youthful song!

Wide Awake (2012)

My favorite iteration of Katy and I like to pretend this is kind of a love note to her former self. So much amazing stuff here. GO GIRL she is saying in this song, WE ARE STRONG! (The end is the best bit where she punches the prince!)

Fast Fact: If I had to have a girl crush it would be this version of Katy Perry!!!

Unconditionally (2013) (INSERT EMOJI HEARTS HERE)

Also my favorite iteration of her. This song, similar to the one above, is lyrically brilliant to me. The video’s cinematography is also just stunning. I see this as another love letter to her former self.

This song and Wide Awake were both criticized for having christian undertones. (I loved them both and threw shade at the critics.)

Dark Horse (2015)

I can only like this song if I don’t watch the video which grates the SH** out of my A$$ CRACK! ON ALL LEVELS. The song is a fine club banger. It was highly critiqued for appropriated images.

NO KATY CRUSH HERE!!!

Fast Fact: I do know all the words.

Roar (2015)

Anthem. Critiqued for riffing Sara Bareilles’ Brave. The women were fine with it and are friends. Critics wanted a girl fight - both women are classy - it was a no go.
