30 Day Dragon Share Challenge!
Day 10: Share your favorite Water dragons
Water eyes have some of the best eyes. You can’t change my mind. Also I’m stunned none of @lionsongfr‘s dragons made it here since I own like... 6 of them.
Altair, the oldest, strongest, and brightest god of Eagle. Loves his husband very much and very much in denial he and Malik ‘adopted’ his paladin, Desmond.
Aixa is a vampire of Aiden’s temptation. She’s crawled her way from the Fortress of Ends to Dragonhome and is now the primary Imperial hunters of the temptation.
Adora is head of security in the Garden. Nothing comes in and nothing goes out without her express permission. She’s also a huge lesbian with bigger arms than your head.
Sela is just a cute baby who lives on the Beach and probably like runs a shave ice shop with a big sister.

Unofficial Name Reference
Once Upon a Time there was a girl named murakumo who said she’d write a list of preferred name spellings for the Shoukoku no Altair fanbase. She’s been pretty busy and kept forgetting to honour her promise, but she finally decided to make a start…
Part 1 - Türkiye
Kato Kotono
Japanese: カトウ コトノ
Explanation: I decided to make an addendum and include Kotono, just because. While romanising her last name as “Katou” or “Katō” isn’t incorrect and Hepburn would be proud, official materials always write it “Kato” in English.
Rumeliana
Japanese name: ルメリアナ (rumeriana)
Other names: Rumeriana, Lumeriana
Pronunciation: roo-mel-YAH-na
Explanation: The roman letters R and L are rendered the same when converted to Japanese using the ninth row of gojuon katakana (ra, ri, ru, etc), so it’s easy to get mixed up between the two. However I believe that Rumeliana is most likely the intended spelling because of its similarity to the name “Rumelia”, in turn derived from the Turkish “Rumeli”, which historically referred to areas of Europe under Ottoman Imperial control. “Rum” is derived from “Rome”, meaning the Roman peoples (i.e. non-Muslims). Incidentally, I call the inhabitants of the continent “Rumelians”.
Türkiye Stratocracy
Japanese name: トルキエ将国 (torukie shoukoku)
Other names: Türkiye Devleti, Torqye Devleti, Turkiye
Pronunciation: tuhr-kee-eh
Explanation: Türkiye is, pure and simple, the Turkish name for the country of Turkey. Kotono uses this spelling liberally on maps and such. It seems the anime may have changed it to Torqye to prevent any backlash from people mistaking the portrayal as real, rather than fictional? I don’t know. “Shoukoku” is a made-up word indicating a country governed by pashas, or “generals” in Japanese. There’s no accepted English translation, but in the magazines Kotono writes “general nation” in the roman alphabet. The earliest scanlators instead picked “stratocracy”, which is a military government. “Devleti” is a Turkish word meaning “state”, so in using that name the military aspect that sets Türkiye apart from its neighbours is lost.
Altın (The Golden City)
Japanese name: 金色の町 (kin’iro no machi) / アルトゥン (arutun)
Other names: Altun
Pronunciation: AL-tuhn
Explanation: Most common roman typefaces still don’t support several letters of the Turkish alphabet. To avoid using a lowercase “dotless i”, the official English version of the manga decided to call the capital “Altun” instead. Its name is Turkish for “gold” and also the colour “golden”. Most towns in the Katoverse have a phonetically written foreign name, and also a Japanese name explaining the meaning behind it, so Altın’s Japanese name is “the golden city”, or perhaps “golden town”.
Divan (The Council of Generals)
Japanese name: 将軍会議 (shougun kaigi) / ディワーン (diwaan)
Other names: Diwan
Pronunciation: DEE-van
Explanation: “Diwan” is perhaps more commonly known in English (where “divan” refers to a type of furniture), but it’s actually Arabic. Kotono appears to have also made this mistake. “Divan” is the correct Turkish word for a council of state.
Pasha (General)
Japanese name: 将軍 (shougun) / パシャ (pasha)
Other names: Paşa
Pronunciation: pa-SHAH
Explanation: Ugh okay I’ve been wondering for a long time now whether or not to switch to the Turkish word “Paşa” instead of the romanisation (which is in the English dictionary and everything). But “s-cedilla” is such a bitch to typeset and I feel like many people, most of all myself, are very attached to the name “Pasha” at this point. Maybe it’s the one spelling I’ll never change… For the sake of consistency, I’ve rendered other Turkish ranks “Vizier” (not “Vezir”), Binbashi (not “Binbaşı”), and so on.
Note on Turkish names: Katoverse Turks don’t have surnames, so the first word is an epithet, a kind of official nickname, and the second word is their given name. Their title - if any - comes last.
Burak
Japanese name: 大将軍 (taishougun) / ビュラク (byuraku)
Other names: Büyük Pasha
Pronunciation: BU-rak
Explanation: Give me strength… I don’t know this man’s name! My main issue is that, while “Büyük Pasha” would make sense as a translation of his title, the katakana rendering of his name isn’t anything like “Büyük”. However, it does resemble “Burak”, which is a masculine Turkish name, so my current theory is that it operates much like the names of cities, combining a Turkish name and Japanese title. It would seem strange, after all, that every other pasha is addressed by first name except him. In Toukoku no Subaru, Turkophile prince Yan Tao adopts the same Japanese title, but is still addressed by name.
Tuğril Mahmut
Japanese name: 犬鷲の将軍 (inuwashi no shougun) / トゥグリル・マフムート (tuguriru mafumuuto)
Other names: Tughril Mahmut, Tuğrul Mahmut, Mahmud
Pronunciation: TOO-ril MAH-moot
Explanation: “Mahmut” is a Turkish variant of the name “Mahmud”, which is Arabic. Maybe the French release thought it sounded more familiar to their audience. Otherwise it’s consistently been “Mahmut”, and Kotono has confirmed this. His epithet is a bit of a headache; “Tuğrul” might be more accurate, if it weren’t for the Japanese pronunciation. In any case, all of the above are variable spellings of the same word, which refers to a mythical bird also called “Turul” or “Togrıl” (and described as a hawk or falcon, not an eagle). It was also the name of the founder of the Seljuk Empire, often romanised as “Tughril”.
İskender
Japanese name: イスカンダル (isukandaru)
Other names: Iskandar
Pronunciation: is-KAN-dar
Explanation: “Iskandar” is the Arabic and Persian form of the name Alexander, whereas “İskender” is the Turkish form. Kotono has written his name this way in the roman alphabet on several sketches. The name became popular in Middle Eastern countries out of admiration for Alexander the Great.
Zehir Zağanos
Japanese name: 毒薬の将軍 (dokuyaku no shougun) / ゼヘル・ザガノス (zeheru zaganosu)
Other names: Zaganos
Pronunciation: ZEY-heer ZA-ah-noss
Explanation: Note the “soft g”, which is more-or-less silent and always a nightmare to typeset. Kotono doesn’t seem to have realised this at first, judging by the rendering of his name in katakana. I found out a while back that the Byzantine Greeks called certain types of falcon and kestrel “Zaganos”, which sets up a pretty neat contrast to Mahmut.
Şehir Halil
Japanese name: 大都市の将軍 (daitoshi no shougun) / シェヒル・カリル (shehiru kariru)
Other names: Khalil, Shehir Halil
Pronunciation: SHEY-heer HA-lil
Explanation: Kotono seems to have initially made another mix-up with this name, since “Khalil” is the Arabic form (and even then, the “k” is silent). She later corrected herself and has consistently written his name “Halil” in the roman alphabet on sketches and artwork, though the katakana stayed the same. The curse of “s-cedilla” sabotages attempts to get his epithet right.
Tesisat-Kapı Saruca
Japanese name: 水門の将軍 (suimon no shougun) / テシサトゥ・ カプ ・ サルジャ (teshisatu kapu saruja)
Other names: Sarjah, Salja
Pronunciation: TAY-see-sat-ku-puh SUH-ru-jah
Explanation: It’s a shame Saruca kicked the bucket before I took over, so I’ve never had a chance to correct his name in the manga. “Sarjah” and “Salja” don’t mean anything as far as I know. I went through a fair amount of trouble finding out the truth, however patience prevailed and I discovered that his namesake was fittingly a real-life pasha who served Mehmet the Conqueror, alongside the men who Zağanos and Halil are named after. May be derived from the Turkish word for “yellow”. His epithet is a bit of a mess; “tesisat-kapı” does not mean “watergate” as the Japanese implies.
Şanslı Nurcan
Japanese name: 幸運の将軍 (kouun no shougun) / シャンスル・ヌルザーン (shansuru nuruzaan)
Other names: Şanslar Nurzan
Pronunciation: SHANS-luh NOOR-jahn
Explanation: Kotono threw me a red herring with this guy by writing his name in katakana “zaan”, as the Turkish letter “C” usually becomes “J” in names like Saruca and Cemil. Nurcan is fitting for him, however, since it means “light of life”. In one chapter Kotono miswrote his epithet in roman characters as “Şanslar”, which means “luck” and sounded legitimate enough, throwing me yet again. “Şanslı” is an adjective, but fits the katakana spelling better.
At-Nalı Cemil
Japanese name: 蹄鉄の将軍 (teitetsu no shougun) / アトナル・ジェミル (atonaru jemiru)
Other names: Atnal Cemil
Pronunciation: AT-naluh JEH-meel
Explanation: A minor detail - “atnal” and “at nalı” both mean “horseshoe” and are pronounced roughly the same way in Japanese.
Kara-Kanat Süleyman
Japanese name: 黒翼のスレイマン (kokuyoku no sureiman)
Other names: Suleiman
Pronunciation: KA-rah KA-nat SU-lay-man
Explanation: Yet another case of mixing up the Turkish and Arabic transliterations. His title, “Başkan”, is a pain to typeset, so Bashkan will suffice.
Caterina
Japanese name:  カテリーナ (kateriina)
Other names: Katarina
Explanation: We’re talking about Süleyman’s golden eagle here. Since it came to light that she shares a name with Caterina de Rossi, I changed to an Italian form.
Şapka İbrahim
Japanese name: 飾り帽子のイブラヒム (shapuka iburahimu)
Other names: Shapka Ibrahim
Pronunciation: SHAP-ka ee-BRAH-heem
Explanation: The curse of “s-cedilla” strikes again. In Turkish there are of course two letter i’s, dotted and dotless. They are pronounced quite differently and should not be confused.
Şara
Japanese name: シャラ (shara)
Other names: Shara, Shahra
Pronunciation: shah-ra
Explanation: This caused me so much grief that I was glad the artbook gave me a way out by rendering her name “Şara”. Though it’s not a common name even nowadays, it fits the bill better than any alternative spellings.
Koko & Koran
Japanese names: ココ (koko) / コラン (koran)
Explanation: I’m really not sure about these two girls. Their current names are just romanised Japanese, and don’t resemble anything used either historically or contemporarily in Turkey or Arabic-speaking countries. I’m tempted to assume that Kotono made them up.
Unchanged Names
Liman
Japanese name: 港の町 (minato no machi) / リマン (riman)
Pronunciation: LEE-man
Uyandırma
Japanese Name:  警告の鐘 (keikoku no kane) /  ウヤンドゥルマ (uyanduruma)
Pronunciation: oo-YAN-dur-mah
Kurt Kurt
Japanese name: 狼の将軍 (ookami no shougun) /  クルト・ クルト (kuruto kuruto)
Pronunciation: koort
Mimar Zeki
Japanese name: 建築家の将軍 (kenrakuka no shougun) / ミマール・ゼキ (mimaaru zeki)
Pronunciation: MEE-mahr ZEY-kee
Deve İlkay
Japanese name: 駱駝の将軍 (rakuda no shougun) / デヴェ・イルカイ (deve irukai)
Pronunciation: DE-vay EEL-kai
Abbas
Japanese name: アッバス (abbasu)
Pronunciation: AH-bass
Ahmet
Japanese name: アフメット (afumetto)
Pronunciation: AH-met
Roxelana
Japanese name: ロクセラーナ (rokuseraana)
Pronunciation: ROCK-say-lah-na

Shoukoku no Altair Liveblog (Chapter 5)
A lovely image. The lines are lighter/clearer in the digital version, but this one has the translation of the names and their titles so. I just love these portraits though, especially how some of them fall out of the frame (Shara! And the tall dudes). And wow, for once you don’t look like a tiny child, Mahmut! He still comes up to Zaganos’s chin, though he is a little taller than Shara. (despite me dragging him for his stature, I’m not much better irl. I am also short enough to be inconvenienced by the world around me.)
Before I even get started on the gut-wrenching situation Mahmut has found himself in from last chapter, let me comment more on those portraits.
I love the detailing on the frame, and the designs at the bottom that symbolize each character. Not going through all of them, but here are some nice details I noticed:
Tumblr media
Iskander looks puffed up. :3
I keep meaning to mention this, but haven’t found a place to bring it up since noticing it after the first chapter. Iskander is shaded so that there is a light band in the shape of a crescent moon on his forehead.
Tumblr media
Louis’s pants/leggings/whatever these are have some sort of pattern or embroidery on them. The manga-ka’s attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. Not to mention the circles on Mahmut’s standard outfit, which have to be drawn every time he appears in it.
Tumblr media
So the eyepatch twins are Colbert and Eleanor? I remember Eleanor’s name mentioned last chapter. And seems they are also from the Cult of the Red Snake, as is evident by the Arbok-like creature. Arbok is based on the Indian cobra, for the pattern on its hood, but I’m not well versed in snake species so idk what the symbolism here is. It looks very happy for some reason, though.
Chapter 5: The Citadel
Onto the actual chapter! We left off with Mahmut getting punched in the gut by an ugly rusty looking club of a sword.
Tumblr media
Chill, dude. Seriously.
Tumblr media
Poor Mahmut.
I don’t think his leg gets cut here, there’s no blood, so does that mean you are supposed to use that sword to bludgeon your enemy to death? It looks like a club, really it does.
(And I can kind of see how this outfit was supposed to be a dress, there are just so many folds and stripes involved it just looked like one big cloak.)
Tumblr media
Stop being creepy, eyepatch dude. The font makes it more ominous too. (Also, he has very pointy ears.)
Tumblr media
Oh? What have you got there, Iskander? The basket Shara carried their clothes in? Looks like Mahmut sent him on a mission of some sort. Also, an interesting note. Apparently golden eagles fly with a slight V shape in their wings, like an airplane.
Tumblr media
Interesting, another crest. This is the place Leredrick is from, if I recall.
Oh, man. This lady’s dissatisfied face.
Tumblr media
Ha! ‘I’m outta here’. She even does a little hand wave to say, ‘this isn’t worth my time’. She’s so done.
Tumblr media
Well, that escalated quickly.
Tumblr media
A lot of these characters pull off dramatic, menacing, sinister, and ‘I don’t give two fucks’ very, very well.
HAHA yeah awkward moment when you realize it was all a sham and there is absolutely nothing you can do to take it back.
But, who is this I see approaching:
Tumblr media
Iskander, what are you up to.
Tumblr media
Looks like a bird and a dancer are here to save the day.
Tumblr media
OF COURSE, eyepatch lady has to go and ruin it. Oh nooo, Shara.
Tumblr media
So it was the container Mahmut keeps meat in for Iskander, not the basket. Poor birdie, gotta work nights too. xD Eagles aren’t nocturnal. And he has to sacrifice his food to boot.
But where he is dropping it off?
“Once the Imperial Army gets here, we will have to fight on their side. Once we do, the Empire will save the hostages. All we can do now is hope the Empire will keep their promise.” I’m not so sure about that anymore, Ibrahim. They seem kind of trigger happy.
And back to Zaganos. What have you been doing this whole time? Preparations I guess.
Tumblr media
Uh...what is that...Zaganos is the ‘Poison’ General so...I love the detailing on the jars/bottles, though. Each one is different for some reason. Are they each a different poison or did he just decide to stick them in fancy containers? Yeah, they didn’t exactly mass produce things back then, but these aren’t even all in the same style.
Zaganos really does not hold back, does he. Though he does seem to be thinking about the decision here, it is a pretty underhanded tactic. Well, at least he’s not jumping at the bit to use it.
Tumblr media
Well, who do we have here? People from the Empire, right. Why are they attacking the guys sent by Louis...? Aren’t they on the same side...And since the name of the eyepatch people’s cult is Swedish, maybe that means they are more like mercenaries Louis hires, rather than actual soldiers from Balt-Rhein.
Gllad is an awkward name to my English speaking self. You don’t see that consonant cluster every day, and it’s one letter off from Glad (in Japanese it is グララット, guraratto, so yeah, that matches).
I like this more formal introduction to these two, though, purely for the fact that the antagonist actually got injured (it’s like, a scratch on the arm but whatever) before the main conflict with them even starts.
I see. So Leredrick just doesn’t want to follow Louis’s plan (quite an extreme way to say ‘fuck you I’m doing my own thing’ considering they’re on the same side though lol).
Tumblr media
Poor kid. Stop bludgeoning him with your club sword, you jerk.
Tumblr media
UGH, his expression morphing into resolve and defiance. Aand then back to pain.
Tumblr media
LOOKS LIKE IT CAN STAB. will you please leave him alone already you ass
Even worse than a pointy sword, it is uh apparently CRACKING bones. And he has to twist it around, pouring salt in the wounds much.
Now that’s just painful to watch urggh. And that is a LOT of blood on the next page.
Tumblr media
What’s going on...I think I see a wing shadow there... (and the text box from hovering over the image whoops)
AHAHA THAT’S GREAT. Seeing her just go fwip! Gone! was greatly needed after seeing Mahmut freaking tortured in an alleyway.
Tumblr media
Shara’s expression is great, too. And I really like the flow of the lines framing her on this panel. It’s just so fluid and swirly.
Tumblr media
Holy mother of- that is a lot of birds. Way to go, Iskander! OH. Was he...maybe dropping his container of meat to attract the other birds? It seemed that he was dropping it off near a tent earlier.
Mahmut is a summoner of birds. That would be his special power in a fantasy land.
And this is actually really fucking terrifying. More terrifying than just Iskander coming at you with claws outstretched. Apparently the largest of the golden eagle species can have a claw on each foot that is only a tiiiny bit shorter than that of the harpy eagle (the largest eagle in the world, and a deadly thing that can carry deer into tree branches and can easily cut you to the bone). Female golden eagles can be the size of a man’s torso. So, WOW.
Tumblr media
And now we get smug Mahmut! God, this kid’s expressions.
Tumblr media
This is a massive page (I think it’s a 2-pager actually). Just...drawing all that detail. The cover coming off (with those stripes), the frame of the tent, the birds, the people and all the supplies that formed a wall around them.
Oh.
Tumblr media
OH. Not so high and mighty now, are we.
YES. SAVED BY A DANCER AND A BIRD.
Tumblr media
Methinks you owe Iskander some meat. What a good birdie.
I’m surprised you can move that arm of yours, though.
BUT. I have not forgotten Zaganos, who is preparing to use some very deadly concoctions. Oh, never mind! They got the message to him on time.
Tumblr media
Very nice horse. I like the tassels it’s decked out in.
Tumblr media
lol She’s great. Got a passed out/dead guy right next to her too.
“All the troops were drunk at the time or something.” Better than knowing you were outsmarted by a kid, a dancer, and a bird right.
Tumblr media
His faces are...haha and he even has a hand on one hip. *pokepoke*
Tumblr media
We don’t know much about them yet, but these two are rather fun. ‘Killed by falling rocks’...Ok...
OH YEAH. EYEPATCH DUDE. HE’S STILL THERE.
So, falconers usually use a whistle to call their bird back to them, but it looks like Mahmut uses his for other purposes.
Tumblr media
Like smacking swords out of people’s hands. What happened to his club sword?
Tumblr media
It also has the little wing symbol on it. Actually, is it a whistle? I can’t really remember if it was ever mentioned anywhere that it was. I just assumed.
Ooh, this battle is not over yet. Man, Mahmut is tough. He was still able to fling that thing around with his injured shoulder. Adrenaline is a godsend.
Tumblr media
Very nice. You can see a bit of blood (!! he really needs to get that treated) and it seems he let the sword fly out of his grasp on purpose to-
Tumblr media
Choke him, apparently, nice.
But the question is: What would Mahmut have done in if he was in Ibrahim’s situation? Interesting. He’s talking about how he is helping Ibrahim out, not based on his actions here, but because they’re friends.
Tumblr media
WELL, you certainly got back at him. Is he dead? And what happened to Eleanor after she got carried off by the birds? Are they both dead.
Anyway, I’M SO GLAD THIS DIDN’T END IN TRAGEDY. I still have 17 more volumes to go for that to potentially happen!
Tumblr media
Iskandeeerrr I like his little jesses. Iskander is half the reason I’m looking forward to the anime.
Btw, you owe him some meat, Mahmut.
Tumblr media
They cleaned this up for the digital release (it was originally spread across 2 pages and thus a little awkwardly split up).
Tumblr media
STOP. You’re not allowed to make me cry this early in the series. (kidding, I don’t cry easily, but damn. That was a great ending to this arc.)
...What is with your expression, Iskander.
Tumblr media
That is the look of a bird that has seen some shit. My cat makes the same expression sometimes for no good reason.
Tumblr media
The credits page is a nice touch. You usually don’t get one like this. I love Mahmut petting Iskander up there in the corner. Birds like to be scratched, too!
...Though Zaganos has this, like, Medusa hair going on. Does it get worse without the hat?
AND THAT’S THE END. DAMN was that an emotional rollercoaster.

Shoukoku no Altair – 03
We left Tintin Mahmut in dire straits last week, but still with an ace in the hole: his trusty eagle Snowy Iskender. As Zaganos, outnumbered 10-1, considers using poison to pull out a victory, the female Imperial officer stopping Shahra from cutting any more tent ropes, and Mahmut straight getting his ass kicked by the male officer, it’s all up to the bird.
I must say, this show’s clever (if sometimes credulity-straining) use of Iskender and the eagles to lend Mahmut a hand in times of great need add a sheen of destiny to his story, as if nature itself would prefer he succeed in his endeavors.
Or rather birds, plural: scores of them descend on the hostage tent and pull it away; conveniently dropping it on top of the Imperial soldiers standing by for orders to burn it. Instead, they are the ones who burn, in a nice bit of irony.
Iskender him(her?)self comes to Mahmut’s aid against the big guy, who after all has only one eye and thus has a depth perception shortfall that results in a rather creative death: Mahmut and the eagle work together to wrap a chain around the guy’s face and throat, and Mahmut snaps his neck.
Thus Mahmut’s would-be tormentor is dunzo, and so is the Imperial plot to take Hisar. Ibrahim Vali opens the gates to Zaganos and his forces, and Mahmut makes the call to release all of the Araba, despite their rebellion. For that, and for all their roles in the brief Hisar rebellion, Mahmut, Ibrahim, and Zaganos are all brought before the Divan of the other 11 Pashas to testify and be judged.
To Ibrahim and Mahmut’s shock and delight, the former is not executed, but restored as Vali of Hisar. Zaganos is reinstated as Pasha. But Mahmut, as I figured considering the outcome of the other two verdicts, isn’t so lucky. He is stripped of his rank of Pasha, and demoted to Binbashi under Halil Pasha. He couldn’t have ended up under a nicer commander, but it’s still a huge step backwards for Mahmut, for whom duty is life.
Having tasted the sweet top only makes the demotion all the more bitter, but Mahmut does not contest or even disagree with the Divan’s judgment. There were always risks Mahmut exposed himself to by becoming the youngest Pasha, and that included letting emotional detachments make him forget that the role of Pasha is far more than going off alone to save one’s friend.
It’s just as bitter to think that by accomplishing so many great and noble deeds in Hisar, thwarting those who threatened peace while saving thousands of innocent people, in this case, was the wrong move, at least in his position. Being a Pasha must mean being more detached, more aloof from personal concerns, while far more attuned to the greater needs of the state as a whole.
It’s a big picture position, and Mahmut simply wasn’t ready yet. But he’s learned his lesson, and is eager to see more places, meet more people, and be reinstated as Pasha as quickly as possible…but not so quickly that he doesn’t do it properly.
Judging from the scheming of both Minister Louis and Lelederik, and the fact Louis is aware of Zaganos’ spy network (which Z gave Mahmut the means to contact) and is taking them out one by one, Mahmut can’t get back in the Pasha’s seat soon enough.

Shoukoku no Altair – 02
This week’s Altair begins with more of Mahmut’s backstory; specifically, when he was still in school and excelled at everything but convincing others to follow him—and inspiring loyalty is a key trait in a pasha. What inspired him to work harder to adopt that ability was a friend of his, the older Ibrahim, who vowed to become Vali of his hometown of Hisar.
Fast-forward to the present day, and Hisar is in rebellion, with Ibrahim at the center. Zaganos Pasha immediately sets off with a punitive force, but Mahmut breaks out his usual indignation with the situation, clearly having not learned how to properly engage with the impatient Zaganos.
Thus, he gets nowhere, and must follow Zaganos to Hisar to find out what’s going on. Shahra decides to tag along, because she belives she could be useful; I know of no other reason she has besides seeming to like Mahmut (who doesn’t return her interest, even for a moment).
Elsewhere in Hisar, the families of all thousand soldiers in the castle’s garrison are the hostages of an alliance between the Araba and the Empire. The deal is, Ibrahim’s and his mens’ loved ones will be seen safely to the Turkish capital if they hand over control of the city.
That would be bad news to Turkyie, as Hisar is a buffer between them and the Empire. Unfortunately, between the Imperial representatives, the Araban leader, and the local (female) lord who has brought a large force of her own to bear near Hisar, all the new characters create a bit of a haze and no one really stands out. They’re all just kind of around. But with the tent soaked in oil, there are certainly human stakes to consider.
When Shahrah gets a little dance party going outside that tent, it lures out one of the Imperials. Mahmut, Good Guy that he is, tries to tell the Arabans—happy to be gaining a new city and nation—that they’re all pawns in a larger game of geopolitical chess being played by Minister Louis, whom if I’m not mistaken was roundly beaten by Mahmut in his little fake arrow scheme.
Nevertheless, Mahmut is right in the thick of things, having to cross swords with an opponent of unknown ability (that turns out to be pretty formidable) out of loyalty to his friend Ibrahim. The Imperial tells him it’s no worth it, as Ibrahim had already failed in his role as Vali by letting personal emotions supersede his duty.
He accuses Mahmut as failing for the same reason, but vows not to take his life until the Imperial army is within Hisar’s walls and he can claim victory. And that’s where we leave things: with Mahmut in some very deep water; but with a few pieces (like his at-large golden eagle) to work with, he’s certainly still in the game.
