So I might be reading too far into this but I took the duffers funko pop thing and sorted it

Code:

Yellow- friend pairings

Green: romantic pairings

Blue: familial pairings

Red: not currently present

Okay so we’ll get into the friendship parings first.

So I think will and robin will get to have a fun friendship this season. I think they prob want robin to hang out with someone other than Steve and Nancy so will and her would bond well since they’re both part of the lgbtq+ community. I also think there’s potential for her to help in the buildup for byler. i also see a lot of potential for Mike and Lucas to kind of mend their friendships that’s always been a little rocky throughout the seasons. I think they’ll get some (not a large amount) of interaction together to kind of mend their holes throughout the seasons. I also have seen the theory that Lucas will be integral in helping Mike realize his feelings for Mike which is possible. It’s 50/50 but I do think Lucas may just say something unintentionally that triggers Mike into being like “oh god I’m a homosexual.” (Even tho he probably ALR knows that from the ending of season 3)

The Dustin/Johnathan/Nancy/Steve pairing is interesting and I think it’s gonna be a great quartet thing-a-ma-bobber. So we know Dustin and Steve are joined at the hip and Nancy and Johnathan are also super close so they’ll def stick together. However we’ve also seen previs’ of steve and Johnathan having a conversation in episode 1 of st5 so I think the two of them will become friends. There was also a previs from episode 5 I believe and it looks like they’re in the upside down and you could see Dustin in the passenger seat of a car and Nancy and Johnathan in the back. I think it’d be weird for Dustin to just casually be hanging w/ Nancy and Johnathan so I bet Steve is driving. Also, we know Eleven is gonna be an integral part of the series and so is Will, so the four of them kind of are on the outskirts a little. They’ll prob have a more separate storyline where they’re discovering things unrelated to the core problem. Now why would robin and Lucas not be with that group? Well Lucas just lost max so I think he might need some separation time from that group and he might want to rekindle with mike and will cuz he was kind of distant with them in season 4. I think Robin may be with that group part time, but I also think she may take up some sort of fondness for Will where she wants to protect him (especially if he’s susceptible to vecna) Also if Will is susceptible to Vecna, Lucas has seen Max get vecnad and saved her the first time so he might have that instinct to “I need to save Will since I didn’t save Max.” Robin may be there because she’s the one who discovered the whole music thing and she may want to be wills lesbian protector idk. And obvious mike would want to be there but we’ll get into that later.

Now why did I put Steve/Nancy/Jonathan in green? I think they’re gonna be a love triangle. Not the love triangle where they all date, but just the fact that Steve and Johnathan are both obviously pining over Nancy. As much as I hate admitting it, I think stancy is endgame with the way they set them up in st4. I also think there’s a large possibility of Johnathan well… perishing. I’ve seen a lot of people saying “omg stonathan” cuz they saw Steve and Johnathan touching heads in that photo but I am skeptical of stonathan ever happening. I think they’ll be friends, but I think the head touching could still meaning there’s some head butting over Nancy going on. They both love her so I do think they’ll both have romantic moments throughout the season with her. Idk. That love triangle is quite a mystery. Let’s get into the best ship: Byler! I believe Byler is endgame and I could go on for probably eight hours about all the proof and all the queer coding they’ve gone through. Now why do I think byler is a logical thing going to happen in a straight to the point way? Well you saw Mike at the end of st4 when Will was talking abt feeling Vecna. Mike looked terrified. Mike has that instinct of needing to protect Will, and I think as st4 went on Mike started gaining it back and releasing el didn’t love him as much and that will was the one who needed him. The duffers have also teased a lot about circling back to the og relationships and dynamics from st1, but they’ve also said a lot of it is based on st2. Now in st2 Mike was practically attached to Will since he was possessed by the mid flayer. I am 100% sure Will is going to be under Vecnas trance and I’m pretty sure that’ll happen early in the season. I think once Mike sees that he’ll snap right back into his protector mode and be joined to Will for the rest of the season. From there, the potential of the painting being recalled and basically them confessing their love is quite obvious. I’m not gonna get too into byler here but it you love hearing about byler you should follow me cuz I post about them a lot :) (Also if your a st account or like any fandom I’m interested in I’ll prob follow u back and stalk ur page cuz I adore reading yalls theories and fics and ahhhh)

Now let’s get into the familial relationship!!! I forgot to circle Joyce and hopper in green but that’s okay cuz they’re endgame and it’s obvious. Now since Joyce lost hopper for so long and it took so much tension building over the seasons for them to get together, I think they’ll be partnered up again. They typically are anyways. I think Eleven will also be with them. I think Eleven is going to break up with Mike and become her own character. Now I think eleven is going to die at the end of the season by using all her powers and instead of fainting, destroying the upside down for good and killing herself in the process. I think it’s a full circle but also depressing and plausible ending for her. It’s very likely. This season I think they’re going to focus on her character. In every season her character has either been based on her powers or on being mikes girlfriend. I think her having time with Hoppet and Joyce will give her some good character qualities and depth that we haven’t seen. She’s also reeling from the death of Max and I feel she’ll just want some space (especially from what we see at the end of st4) However she also misses Hopper cuz he was the primary influence in her life and personally I think he loves her more than anymore. She wants to makeup for the lost time with him. Also wherever hopper is Joyce will be too, especially since she’s always had that kind of motherly dynamic towards El (and she is her mom now technically.) I’m just so excited for el to finally get to be her own person.

Lastly I think Max will be MIA for a while. I think that she will come back but not until later. She may help fight Vecna from inside his mind, but I doubt she will truly not come back till Eleven is able to kill vecna. Not seeing Sadie sink in this season much would kill me cuz I love her, but it’s realistic.

The Oliver Twist line is such ooc dialogue I barely consider it canon at this point.

Also the fact that Natalia and Charlie had to ask to change some of the dialogue in that scene as they didn’t think their characters would say certain things, so what we got was probably already way toned down and less combative than what was originally scripted to be…yikes.

Yeahhh. It's really telling evidence of what we all know: The ST writers can only really write the build up to a relationship well, soon as two characters are in a relationship they only manufacture melodrama and fighting, and then making up/breaking up. Jancy was good build up and great payoff in s2 when the ship became canon, in s3 we got just a few sweet relationship moments then it was fighting, a make up scene (kind of rushed) and then awesome battle couple ofc, but then it was angsty drama of long distance. Mileven was all build up then just fighting drama in s3, drama in s4. Jopper was build up, drama (Joyce being with Bob instead to Hopper's dismay, Hopper being a complete asshole in s3) then payoff in s4. Lumax was buildup in s2, some drama in s3 but less so than Mileven, then in s4 they've broken up off screen and they then write them growing back together really well. (and just so no one gets any ideas: and Stancy was just a complete trainwreck the whole time). So like, I really wish they'd let just one of the couples (*cough* Jancy *cough cough*) be stable. Like it doesn't all have to so volatile, not every ship has to dramatically go between declarations of love and breaking up/fighting and getting back together/making up all the time. Like a stable couple isn't by default boring. I've made the comparison before so won't go into it deep again, but Parks & Rec had the best ship writing ever I think, they had their OTPs go through some will they won't they stuff and ofc the intermittent fight but once they had made the ships canon, for the most part they were shown to be healthy couples in love with each other and able to have interesting storylines together/by themselves/with others.

Also the way they write in so much ship drama in the show obviously fuels shipping wars which is what they want I guess because it increases the internet traffic on ST, but I think it distracts from like the main point of the show, the main story they want to tell.

Stranger Things Ship Rankings

I saw someone else do this so i figured, eh why not? I will also include my reasons as to why i ranked each ship what i did. I’m not gonna censor any ship names because i won’t be talking bad about any ships, just giving reasons as to why i personally don’t ship them. although, i will not be tagging the ones i don’t ship.

Byler: 100/10

I love them so much. it’s indescribable. i love everything about them. the buildup, the angst, the relatability. sometimes i have my doubts about them becoming canon because like some people state, it’s the 80s. it’s unlikely. but there are so many signs pointing to byler so as of right now i am 100% sure that byler is going to end up canon. if it doesn’t, it’s just bad writing at this point.

Mileven: 2/10

Alright so this is definitely one of the ships that i wanted until i had it. in seasons 1 and 2, i loved loved loved mileven and that’s the reason i gave it a 2 but if i’m being honest, it’s ranked so low because from season 3 onward, all we ever see them do is kiss and make out. other canon couples on this list have only ever had 1 or 2 on screen kisses and you can tell just by the way they interact with one another that they truly love each other and the chemistry is there. with mileven, you don’t really have that.

in both seasons where they are canonically a couple, there is some major conflict between the two that gets resolved at the very end. arguments over something very minuscule in my opinion. why would they write them with so much conflict if they were truly meant to be endgame?

Jopper: 10/10

Not much to say about this one. The buildup is everything. And if you don’t ship this, i don’t trust you.

Lumax: 10/10

Similar to jopper, if you don’t ship this, i don’t trust you. lumax has all the signs of a perfect ship. the will they/ won’t they vibe. and overall, they have amazing trust and care for one another.

Jancy: 1000000/10

This ship can be controversial but i love jancy more than i love oxygen (but not more than gallavich). as you can tell from my blog, i’m a jonathan byers stan first and a human second. i love nancy so much but i want jonathan to be happy. from the very first episode, we can see that nancy and jonathan have some unresolved feelings and tension there. even if nancy may not be able to make up her mind sometimes, it’s clear that she loves jonathan so much and vise versa. just like byler and lumax, this ship has a little bit of angst mixed with will they/won’t they and i eat it up every single time they’re on screen.

Stancy: 0/10

Opposite of jopper and lumax. if you do ship this, i don’t trust you. steve and nancy have never really had chemistry. from the very first time we see the two, it feels forced. it doesn’t feel genuine. in my opinion, this ship died in season 2 and if they bring them back, ill be so mad.

Stonathan: 9/10

i unironically ship stonathan so much. like when i first started watching, i shipped this as a joke. we all love enemies to lovers and this ship is like the peak of that trope. steve and jonathan don’t have much one on one screen time together and joe and charlie are very good friends in real life, giving them stonathan to work with when they are both sick of talking about jancy vs stancy would be like a breath of fresh air. this ship is the only ship i’m okay with happening if jancy breaks up (other than ronance ofc)

Ronance: 9/10

i like ronance. it’s so cute and the tension between nancy and robin is there but i just love jancy too much to rank this any higher. like stated before, ill be completely okay if they ditch jancy for ronance though.

Steddie: 4/10

if you just look at my account, you’ll be able to tell that i don’t really like steddie. i have no major issue with the ship itself, i just simply don’t ship it. the shippers are what makes this ship unbearable at times. i don’t like it because steve and eddie interacted only a few times and every intimate moment between the two was improvised.

Jargyle: 7/10

i honestly love jargyle. the stoner boyfriends trope. that’s really all i can say about that. we haven’t seen enough of them to really analyze their entire relationship.

Eddissy: 5/10

Now, it’s cute. don’t get me wrong. but personally, i headcanon eddie as gay and eddie and chrissy trike me as a platonic dynamic duo and best friends similar to steve and robin.

Rockie: 8/10

its really cute and i love robin and i want her to get her happy ending. i know what some of you might say but this is a tv show, they have the option to make any characters as fleshed out or one dimensional as they please. i want to see more of vickie next season but i just don’t like how they made her like a carbon copy of robin. all i can say is i hope she gets more personality next season.

Elmax: 7/10

not for me but i get the appeal. best friends to lovers. similar to byler. but i love their friendship more than i would love their relationship.

Byclair: 9/10

one of the best non canon ships. i love their dynamic and i’m desperate for some more byclair next season. i couldn’t see them dating but they are one of the more underrated duos in this show.

Henderhop: 6/10

you can tell how much dustin and el care for each other so i get the appeal and why some people would ship them. i just don’t see it.

Henclair: 3/10

dustin and lucas do have a great friendship that i really need to see more of next season but i just can’t see them together no matter how hard i try.

Duzie: 10/10

they obviously love each other. all i can say about this one is that we need some on screen moments between the two where they’re in the same location.

Harringrove: -10/10

ngl, i didn’t know people shipped this unironically. i thought it was joke. and if you’re okay with an abusive relationship, you do you ig.

Elumax: 5/10

i get the appeal for those who ship both elmax and lumax but this is also one of those ships that just aren’t for me.
