Classic Who explores ideas, New Who explores morals
classic who is like 'i see this trend, lets explore what might happen if that trend continues and let the audience figure out what it's talking about and come to their own conclusions.'
new who is like 'this trend is BAD and i'm going to PREACH A SPEECH about why it's going to RUIN EVERYTHING' and it's so much more exhausting
#wren rambles#doctor who#this brought on by me watching orphan 55#which had SUCH a fun concept#and then absolutely FACEPLANTED with the doctor moralizing at the end#like yes doctor who has ALWAYS explored topical and political issues#but never is there a definitive I Am Telling You This Is Right message#whereas now I just had to sit here and watch 13 preaching at me?#ughghg#explore the idea but don't shove it down my throat#classic who had an episode (Ice Warriors) exploring climate change as one aspect of the story#talking about how all the plants were removed and that messed with the atmosphere etc.#but that was just a SMALL PART of the whole episode and it was never outright condemned (it was made clear it was BAD and the root problems#but that was never the BIG ISSUE the Doctor Lectured His Companions about) (not that victoria or jamie could do anything lol)#plus this feeds into my issues with 13's run (which started during 12's somewhat but less so)#where the Doctor is painted as the Narratively Right one#where when she says something that's what the narrative wants you to BELIEVE#which coming from Two and Three's run is WILD#because Two is chaotic and murderous when he thinks he's right#and he's manipulative and deceptive at times#and Three is selfish and pouty and rude#and don't get me wrong Thirteen has her issues and I lvoe them#HOWEVER. she's pretty much always RIGHT she's the Word Of God when it comes to moral things#and this more than anything is my biggest issues with Modern Who#mostly 12 and 13's eras#so i hope we move out of that somewhat in the new era but i'm not super holding up hopes (especially after star beast)#maybe one day i'll write a proper full article about it but GOSH#i don't watch this show to be preached at. I watch it for a fun/tragic scifi romp and also to see interesting ideas explored#and reflect the climate of the world and how society influences media#explore the idea of climate change turning the world into a post apocalypse! that's such a fun idea and topical!

WEEK 6: Slow Fashion vs. Fast Fashion. Let's Create a Race!
The world of fashion is a whirlwind! On one hand, you’ve got fast fashion, where trendy clothes are whipped up at lightning speed and prices are rock bottom. But wait, there’s more! On the other hand, there’s the more mindful approach of slow fashion, all about quality pieces that last. So, buckle up fashionistas, because we’re about to explore the exciting (and sometimes confusing) trends that are shaping how we dress!
Up to present, projections for the Fashion Market indicate that revenue will achieve $665.40 billion by the year 2024. Furthermore, a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 9.03% is anticipated for the period 2024-2029, resulting in a projected market valuation of 1,025 billion USD by 2029. The user base is also expected to reach 2.6 billion users by 2029 (Statista 2023).

From Leaves, Leathers & Furs to Fierce Fashionistas: A Journey Through Maslow's Needs
Fashion is a chameleon, constantly changing to adapt with our desires and needs.
Take a trip back to the Stone Age – the very beginning of the fashion story. Here, clothing addressed our most basic need: survival, which is psychological needs according to Maslow’s hierarchy (Mcleod 2022). Leaves, leathers, and furs were primary solutions for covering up and protecting humans (BYJU 2024).
Tumblr media
Fast forward a few thousand years, clothing climbed up to the new stair of Maslow’s pyramid. It wasn’t just a shield anymore! It’s a way to express ourselves and our place in society. Just thinking about the togas majestically draped in ancient Rome or the elaborate fashions adorning pharaohs in Egypt. People put their creativity into colorful fabric rolls, crafting beautiful stitches and careful designs that speak up loudly about their social status and inner world as a way to meet the fulfilling needs for esteem and belonging (Mcleod 2022).
Tumblr media
Boom! The Industrial Revolutions have sprung up like “mushrooms” in factories to produce clothes with fastest speed. Suddenly, fashion wasn’t just for the elite. It was more accessible to the masses, adapting with the safety and security needs (Mcleod 2022). This development allowed for a wider variety of clothes, meeting our desires for self-expression.
Tumblr media
The development of technology and social media platforms brought fashion into another twist: the rise of celebrities and influencers - the new fashion pioneers. They sparked trends and defined what’s hot. This taps back into Maslow's hierarchy - the need for social belonging and esteem (Mcleod 2022). We see these trends reflected in the diverse fashion landscape of today: fast fashion for quick trend fixes, slow fashion for quality and self-expression, and sustainable fashion for the eco-conscious among us.
Tumblr media
Fast Fashion: Decoding the Craze!
Fast fashion is everywhere! But hold on a sec! Is it all sunshine and rainbows? Let’s dive into the world of fast fashion to see the truths!
In 2020, The United Nations Environment Program (2020) identifies the fashion industry as a significant contributor to the climate crisis and ecological degradation. Industry figures highlight the amount of 2-8% for global carbon emissions, with a recent authoritative report pointing out it at 4%. Furthermore, to provide the materials for the industry, now the annual deforestation is over 150 million trees and the water consumption is over 93 billion cubic meters of water, accouting for 4% of global freshwater. The dyeing and processing in production are a primary source of water pollution, impacting crucial waterways in many countries, such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, China or Cambodia. Another concerning impact is the synthetic fiber laundering. It is the main factor of microplastic pollution and an estimated 35% of global ocean microplastics originating from this source. The social impact is also concerning, with garment workers frequently subjected to unsafe working conditions, exploitation, underpayment, forced labor, health risks, and verbal and physical abuse.
Tumblr media
Fast fashion is outstanding by its fast cycles of new trends and frequent releases of low-cost collections. This special business model prioritizes affordability and trendy production rather than its sustainable materials, high quality and reasonable consumption, which leads to the substantial overproduction of textile waste (Pucci, Tufarelli, & Giliberti 2022).
In other words, it can imagine fast fashion can be both speed demons and fairy styles. It gets the hottest trends from runway to your closet in record time, and at prices that won't break the bank. However, the quality of the clothes might be soon outdated, surviving for a short life in your wardrobe and maybe even landfills. Think of it like a fashion buffet, tons of variety to keep your look fresh without spending a fortune.
Furthermore, these fashion retailers usually implement a production strategy with small batches, readily available surplus manufacturing capacity, and the deliberate stock-outs creation. This practice allows for significant and rapid adjustments to manufacturing based on real-time demand (Desai, Nassar & Chertow 2012). For instance, Zara which is a prominent fast-fashion company, applies the approach through its ability to fast update designs. It means short product life cycles and minimizing the time a garment remains in-store can promote exclusivity perception and enhance product appeal.
Tumblr media
Slow Fashion Race's Secrets
The fashion world isn't just about trendy, fast-produced clothing anymore. If you are tired of clothes that look cheap before you even leave the store, feeling like your wardrobe revolves around a never-ending cycle of trends, then it's time to discover the world of slow fashion!
Tumblr media
The concept of slow fashion, though often misunderstood as a new phenomenon, possesses a rich history associated with countercultural movements (Lai, Henninger & Alevizou 2017). Traces of its philosophy can be found in the anti-fur campaigns of the 1980s and protests against unethical labor practices during the 1990s and early 2000s. This movement frequently expresses the meaning “eco fashion”, “sustainable fashion”, “ethical consumption”, “thrifting” and “circular fashion”; and it also advocates for a fundamental shift in the fashion industry's core values (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). Its core values focus on prioritizing sustainable practices and emphasizing quality over quantity. Slow fashion towards durable products, traditional production techniques, and timeless designs to achieve environmental sustainability. It encourages brands to change from a time-based, fast-paced business model to one with slower production cycles, ethical practices, and the creation of well-crafted, long-lasting quality.
Slow fashion isn’t about hitting the snooze button on style. It’s about quality over quantity, investing in timeless pieces that you’ll love for years to come. Imagine a wardrobe filled with well-made classics and unique finds - a far cry from overflowing racks of flimsy fast-fashion fare.
Tumblr media
Ready to slow down and step up your style? Slow fashion is a mindful approach to dressing. It’s about quality, sustainability, and expressing your unique style. So, ditch the disposable and embrace the durable - your wardrobe and the planet will thank you for it!
Forget Fashion Magazines, Influencers Are Now Running the Runway!
Remember the days when fashion trends trickled down from the pages of glossy magazines?  Well, those days are gradually over. Now, it’s the era of influencer power - where your next outfit inspiration might come from a quick scroll through Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or any social media platforms.
Tumblr media
Social media influencers have emerged as significant roles in promoting slow fashion by their ability to influence consumer behavior (Jacobson & Harrison 2021). They build trust among their followers by supporting sustainable practices and encouraging eco-friendly choices on their platforms. Through diverse content formats, such as posts, articles, photos or videos, influencers effectively communicate and inspire lifestyles that express both creativity, convenience and sustainability (Kapoor, Tagore, & Dua 2022). According to Meyer (2019),  23% online shoppers are influenced by the recommendations from social media or KOLs while the number of shoppers who are receptive to purchase through social media platforms accounted for 30%.
Tumblr media
So why are influencers?
For me, there is a magic to influencer fashion. Unlike celebrities who seem untouchable, influencers feel relatable. They wear clothes we can imagine ourselves rocking, and their down-to-earth personalities make their recommendations feel genuine. Furthermore, the constant stream of content keeps the fashion world exciting and developing.
The influencer era is here to stay, but it's likely to evolve. Brands are becoming more transparent about partnerships, and consumers are getting savvier about spotting sponsored content. In the end, the power lies with us, the viewers. We can choose to follow influencers who inspire us and whose values resonate with our own.
Tumblr media
The influencer era has strongly impacted the fashion industry, making it more accessible and engaging than ever. By being a smart and informed consumer, you can explore and discover this new world and use it to create a wardrobe that reflects your unique style and values. Happy scrolling!

The Evolution of Fashion
Fashion is not a static entity; it evolves, morphs, and reinvents itself over time. What was once the epitome of style might become a relic of the past, only to resurface as a nostalgic trend years later. This cycle of rebirth and reinterpretation keeps the industry dynamic and unpredictable.
Expression Through Style
At its core, fashion is a form of self-expression. It allows individuals to communicate without words, showcasing their personalities, beliefs, and aspirations through the clothes they wear. Whether it's the sophistication of a tailored suit, the free-spiritedness of bohemian attire, or the boldness of streetwear, fashion is a canvas for showcasing identity.
Fashion's Influence on Culture and Society
Beyond personal expression, fashion has a profound impact on culture and society. It's intertwined with historical movements, reflecting societal norms, political climates, and economic conditions. Fashion has been a tool for challenging conventions, pushing boundaries, and advocating for change. From the flapper dresses of the 1920s challenging traditional femininity to the punk movement's rebellion in the 1970s, fashion has been a catalyst for social transformation.
The Role of Sustainability
In recent years, sustainability has emerged as a crucial aspect of the fashion industry. The movement towards sustainable fashion isn't just a trend; it's a fundamental shift towards responsible consumption.
Fashion in the Digital Era
The digital age has revolutionized how fashion is consumed, produced, and distributed. Social media platforms have become runways themselves, where influencers, designers, and brands showcase their latest creations. E-commerce has made fashion accessible globally, breaking geographical barriers and offering endless choices at the click of a button. Technology has also influenced design and manufacturing processes, allowing for innovative creations through 3D printing and virtual fashion experiences.

Looking Ahead
The future of fashion holds promise and challenges. Sustainability will continue to be a driving force, shaping how fashion is created and consumed. The Ripple Effect: How Individual Actions Contribute To A Greener World
Tumblr media
"The choices we make today have the power to create a greener tomorrow. Let's embrace sustainability and amplify the ripple effect for a better world. 🌍🌱 In today's world, the need for a greener and more sustainable planet has become increasingly important. The ripple effect, a concept that highlights the impact of individual actions, plays a crucial role in creating a greener world. Each action, no matter how small, has the potential to create a positive change that extends far beyond its initial scope. Whether it's recycling, reducing energy consumption, or choosing eco-friendly products, every individual has the power to contribute to a greener world. The cumulative effect of these individual actions creates a ripple that can inspire others to follow suit, ultimately leading to a more sustainable future for generations to come. By recognizing the power of our individual actions, we can all be catalysts for change and make a significant difference in creating a greener world.
Tumblr media
Understanding Our Impact: Exploring the Ripple Effect
When it comes to the actions we take and the choices we make, it's essential to understand that they have far-reaching consequences. Every decision we make, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect that extends beyond our immediate surroundings. This ripple effect not only affects our own lives but also has the potential to influence others and even the world at large. It's important to realize that our impact is not limited to our immediate circle of influence. Our actions and choices can have a domino effect, spreading out and affecting various aspects of society, the environment, and even the global community. By understanding this ripple effect, we can make more informed decisions and work towards creating a positive and lasting impact. One significant aspect of understanding the ripple effect is recognizing the interconnectedness of all things. Just like the ripples created by a stone thrown into a pond, our actions can create a chain reaction that transcends boundaries. Whether it's a simple act of kindness or a more significant endeavor, every positive action has the potential to inspire and influence others to do the same. When it comes to the ripple effect, it's crucial to consider not only the immediate consequences of our actions but also the long-term effects. One small action, when repeated by many, can lead to significant change. For example, adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives, such as reducing waste or conserving energy, can contribute to mitigating climate change and preserving our planet for future generations. Furthermore, the ripple effect applies not only to our actions but also to our mindset and attitudes. By cultivating a positive outlook and fostering empathy and compassion, we can inspire others to do the same. Small acts of kindness, such as volunteering or supporting a cause, can create a ripple effect of goodwill and contribute to building a more compassionate and harmonious society. It's important to note that our impact is not restricted to our immediate surroundings. In today's interconnected world, thanks to technology and social media, our actions and messages can reach a global audience. This means that our positive influence can extend far beyond what we may initially perceive, and it highlights the significance of considering the potential impact of our words and actions. By understanding the power of our impact and the ripple effect it can create, we can become more conscious of the choices we make in our everyday lives. We can strive to align our actions with our values, considering the potential consequences and embracing the responsibility we have to make a positive difference. So, let's reflect on the ripple effect and the interconnectedness of all things. Let's recognize that our actions matter and that we have the ability to shape the world around us. By making conscious choices and understanding the potential consequences, we can create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond ourselves.

Small Steps, Big Changes: How Individual Actions Make a Difference
Welcome to our article on how small steps can lead to big changes and how individual actions can make a significant difference. In this post, we'll explore the power we all have to bring about positive transformations and impact the world around us. So, let's dive in! - Choose Sustainable Transportation: One of the easiest ways to make a difference is by opting for sustainable transportation methods. Consider walking, cycling, or taking public transportation whenever possible. By reducing our carbon footprint, we actively contribute to minimizing air pollution and preserving the environment. - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We've all heard this phrase countless times, but it still holds immense value. Reducing our consumption, reusing items whenever possible, and recycling materials are effective ways to minimize waste and conserve resources. Small actions like using reusable shopping bags and investing in a compost bin can have a substantial impact in the long run. - Conserve Energy: Energy conservation is crucial for mitigating climate change. Simple actions like turning off lights when leaving a room, unplugging electronics when not in use, and utilizing natural light can make a significant difference. Additionally, investing in energy-efficient appliances and using smart thermostats can lead to long-term energy savings. - Educate and Inspire Others: By sharing our knowledge and experiences, we can inspire those around us to take action. Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to adopt eco-friendly practices and highlight the positive impact it can have on the planet. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change. - Support Local and Sustainable Businesses: When making purchasing decisions, choose local businesses and products that align with sustainable practices. By doing so, we support the local economy and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. Additionally, consider buying second-hand items or supporting companies that prioritize ethical and environmentally friendly production methods. - Embrace a Plant-Based Diet: The food choices we make have a profound effect on the environment. By adopting a plant-based diet or reducing our consumption of animal products, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save water, and protect animal habitats. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains into your meals for a healthier you and a healthier planet. - Volunteer in your Community: Get involved in local initiatives that promote sustainability and environmental conservation. Whether it's participating in beach clean-ups, tree planting, or advocating for policies that protect the environment, volunteering allows us to contribute to the greater good and make a lasting impact. - Invest Responsibly: Consider investing in companies that prioritize sustainability and have a positive impact. Sustainable investing allows us to support businesses that align with our values while generating financial returns. By holding companies accountable for their actions, we encourage sustainable practices across industries. - Stay Informed and Engaged: Keep yourself updated on current environmental issues and engage in discussions and debates. By staying informed, we can support initiatives that promote sustainability, hold governments and corporations accountable, and actively engage in creating a better future. Remember, even small individual actions can create a ripple effect of positive change. Each step, no matter how small, contributes to a larger movement towards a sustainable and thriving planet. By adopting these practices, we can collectively make a significant difference and inspire others to do the same. So, let's take those small steps towards big changes today!

Sustainable choices not only benefit the planet but also have a positive impact on our health, economy, and overall well-being. Sustainability encompasses a range of practices that aim to minimize our carbon footprint and preserve natural resources. From reducing waste and conserving energy to supporting eco-friendly businesses, every action we take can make a difference. By embracing sustainability, we can pave the way for a more balanced and harmonious existence. The Role of Sustainable Choices in Protecting the Environment Sustainable choices play a crucial role in protecting the environment. By opting for renewable sources of energy, such as solar or wind power, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and cut down on harmful emissions. This not only helps combat climate change but also improves air quality, safeguarding the health of both humans and wildlife. Another way to make sustainable choices is by reducing waste. By recycling and composting, we can minimize the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, preventing harmful substances from polluting our soil and waterways. Additionally, choosing products with minimal packaging and opting for reusable items can significantly reduce our environmental impact. Sustainable Choices for a Healthier Lifestyle Not only do sustainable choices benefit the environment, but they also contribute to a healthier lifestyle. By opting for organic and locally sourced food, we support sustainable farming practices that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and the absence of harmful pesticides. This not only provides us with nutrient-rich produce but also supports the local economy. In addition, embracing sustainable transportation options such as walking, cycling, or using public transportation can improve our physical health while reducing air pollution. By reducing our reliance on cars, we can decrease traffic congestion and promote cleaner air, creating a healthier environment for everyone. Economic Benefits of Sustainable Choices Contrary to popular belief, sustainable choices can have significant economic benefits. Investing in renewable energy sources not only creates job opportunities but also reduces our reliance on imported fossil fuels, strengthening our local economy. By supporting eco-friendly businesses, we encourage innovation and the development of sustainable technologies, leading to long-term economic growth. Furthermore, sustainable practices can help businesses reduce costs by improving energy efficiency, minimizing waste, and tapping into new markets. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability, and companies that prioritize eco-friendly practices often attract a loyal customer base. By making small changes in our everyday lives, we can collectively make a significant impact. In this article, we will discuss practical tips that can help you reduce your carbon footprint and create a more sustainable future. - Conserve energy at home: Start by ensuring your home is energy-efficient. Switch to LED light bulbs, insulate your walls and roof, and install programmable thermostats for better energy management. Additionally, remember to turn off lights and appliances when not in use. - Choose alternative transportation methods: Reduce your carbon emissions by opting for walking, cycling, or public transportation whenever possible. If you need to drive, carpooling or using electric vehicles can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. - Practice sustainable eating: Support local and organic food sources to reduce the environmental impact of food production. Reduce meat consumption as the meat industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Opt for plant-based options, and try to minimize food wastage. - Reduce, reuse, and recycle: Mindfully consume and embrace a minimalist lifestyle. Donate or sell items you no longer need, and opt for reusable products instead of single-use items. Separate and recycle your waste properly, and choose products with minimal packaging. - Conserve water: Make conscious efforts to reduce water wastage. Fix leaky faucets and toilets, collect rainwater for gardening, and consider using water-saving appliances and fixtures. Small changes in your water consumption habits can add up to significant water savings. - Support renewable energy sources: Consider installing solar panels on your roof to generate clean energy for your home. If that is not feasible, switch to a green energy provider. By supporting renewable energy sources, you are reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting a more sustainable energy future. - Plant trees and embrace green spaces: Trees are nature's carbon absorbers. Planting trees in your community or participating in local reforestation initiatives can help mitigate carbon dioxide levels. Embrace green spaces and encourage urban gardening to improve air quality and promote biodiversity. - Educate and raise awareness: Spread knowledge about the importance of reducing carbon footprint and encourage others to adopt sustainable practices. Engage in conversations, share information through social media platforms, and participate in community events that promote sustainable living. By implementing these practical tips in your everyday life, you can make a positive impact on the environment. Remember, reducing carbon footprint requires collective effort and commitment. Start today and inspire others to join you on this journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.

**From Recycling to Composting: Sustainable Waste Management** Introduction Sustainable waste management plays a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of excessive waste generation on our environment. From recycling to composting, adopting environmentally friendly practices can help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet. Recycling Recycling is a key component of sustainable waste management. By collecting and processing used materials, we can transform them into new products, reducing the demand for raw materials and lowering energy consumption. Commonly recycled items include paper, plastic, glass, and metal. One important aspect of recycling is separating recyclable materials from non-recyclables. This allows for more effective recovery of valuable resources and reduces contamination. Recycling facilities use specialized techniques to sort and process different types of recyclable materials, ensuring they can be turned into new products efficiently. Composting Composting is another essential practice within sustainable waste management. It involves the decomposition of organic waste, such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and agricultural waste, into nutrient-rich compost. This compost can then be used as a natural fertilizer, enriching the soil and promoting plant growth. Composting not only reduces the amount of waste being sent to landfills but also helps divert organic waste from contaminating other recyclables. It plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, as the decomposition of organic waste in anaerobic conditions produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Advantages of Sustainable Waste Management Adopting sustainable waste management practices offers several advantages for both individuals and communities. Firstly, it reduces the strain on landfills, helping to conserve valuable land resources. Recycling and composting also reduce the need for incineration, which can release harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. Furthermore, sustainable waste management contributes to resource conservation by reusing materials and reducing the extraction of raw resources. This, in turn, helps to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions associated with manufacturing processes. Sustainable Waste Management in Practice To implement sustainable waste management effectively, it is essential to establish comprehensive recycling and composting programs. These programs should include separate collection systems for recyclables and organic waste, ensuring that valuable resources are not lost in the general waste stream. Education and awareness campaigns also play a vital role in encouraging individuals and communities to embrace sustainable waste management practices. Providing clear guidelines on what can be recycled and composted helps prevent contamination and ensures the success of recycling and composting initiatives. The Role of Technology Technology plays a significant role in supporting sustainable waste management efforts. Advanced sorting systems can efficiently separate different types of recyclables, allowing for greater resource recovery. Read the full article

Navigating Waves of Representation: A Look at Diversity in Media Over Time
The world of media, like a vast ocean, reflects the ebbs and flows of societal currents. One significant tide that has shaped the landscape is the ongoing effort to promote diversity and inclusivity. As we navigate through time, it's fascinating to observe how this journey has been marked by both strides forward and moments of pause. In this blog post, we embark on a journey to explore the evolution of diversity in media, from its promising beginnings to potential periods of redirection.
The 1970s emerged as a pioneering era in media, marked by sitcoms like "Good Times," "The Jeffersons," and "All in the Family." These shows dared to challenge stereotypes, open dialogues between cultures, and provide glimpses into the lives of diverse communities. The canvas of television screens became a tapestry of stories that humanized different experiences and promoted empathy among viewers. The groundwork laid during this time sowed the seeds of understanding and set the stage for more inclusive storytelling.
However, as the mid-1980s approached, a sense of change was in the air. Factors such as shifting political climates, economic considerations, and evolving tastes in popular culture began to influence the narrative currents. While the progress made in the previous decade was undeniable, it appeared that the journey toward diversity encountered a period of redirection. The media landscape, like any artistic expression, was subject to the ebb and flow of trends that occasionally altered its course.
Just as tides recede, they also advance anew. The commitment to diversity in media did not waver but rather experienced a resurgence in subsequent years. The turn of the millennium ushered in a renewed focus on representation, with voices from marginalized communities demanding to be heard. The rise of digital platforms, social media, and streaming services further democratized storytelling, allowing a broader range of narratives to find their place in the spotlight.
As we sail through the present day, it's evident that the voyage towards greater diversity and inclusivity in media is far from over. The landscape is now dotted with a rich array of stories, characters, and perspectives that celebrate the complexity of the human experience. These narratives mirror the diverse tapestry of our society and encourage meaningful conversations about representation, equity, and the power of storytelling to bridge gaps.
While our journey through the waves of representation may have encountered periods of redirection, the trajectory remains hopeful and promising. The lessons learned from both past and present illuminate a path toward a more inclusive media ecosystem. As viewers, creators, and advocates, we have the opportunity to steer the narrative ship towards uncharted horizons, where every voice finds its place and every story contributes to the mosaic of understanding.
Diversity in media is a voyage that reflects the broader journey of society itself. As we navigate the tides of time, we witness moments of progress, redirection, and renewal. Just as the ocean continues to shift and reshape its shores, the media landscape evolves to reflect the ever-changing tapestry of humanity. Through our collective efforts, we can ensure that the waves of representation continue to carry us towards a more inclusive, empathetic, and harmonious future.

Blog Post 6
Knowing that our adventure in this class has come to an end as I write my final blog entry, I can't help but feel sad. The student display, which was eagerly awaited, showcased our classmates' incredible skills and imagination included a number of short movies that each explored intriguing themes and ideas.
Each movie examined intriguing concepts and issues. "Road to Recovery," the first movie, was about change and empathy. It featured an automobile collision brought on by automatic driving, which got us to contemplate the perils of artificial intelligence and the value of empathy. The second movie, "New World Order," was interesting because it blended the past and the present. It depicted a society in which there is much disorder, rioting, and racial segregation. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words and compelling images were utilized to demonstrate how things may improve. "Saving Western," the third movie, was influenced by well-liked movies and books like "Black Panther." It included significant subjects like climate change, dystopian society, and slavery. It felt more intimate because it was taped at someone's home. The fourth movie, "The Truth about Slavery," explored how history can occasionally be overlooked or forgotten through odd and surreal events. It demonstrated how slavery still has an impact on us now and why it's crucial to keep in mind the past. The fifth movie, "Seeing Double," was a science fiction film that made us consider the issues with capitalism and the negative applications of technology. It served as a warning of the perils of having excessive power and greed. In conclusion, the movies got us to reflect on significant issues and how they apply to our daily lives. It was fascinating to observe how creativity may prompt us to consider our surroundings.
A compelling short narrative titled "Burn Down the Dollhouse" brought the showcase to a close. The story captivated the audience with its evocative and exquisite wording, leaving a deep impression. Upon reflection, it was a pleasure to see our classmates' extraordinary talent and unbounded creativity on exhibit during the presentation. We were able to understand how these ideas may be explored through various types of media by watching the various films and stories, each of which offered a distinctive viewpoint on a variety of issues. One movie that stood out was "Saving Western," which echoed the themes of survival and tenacity found in movies like Black Panther and was a stirring example of the unbreakable spirit of humanity. Since this concludes our class, the contacts I’ve built and the memories I’ve created will be treasured by me. I am appreciative of the knowledge obtained, the new perspectives, and the long-lasting influence this class has had on how I view art and how it can influence the world.

How I Broke, and Botched, the Brandon Teena Story
In the thought-provoking essay titled "How I Broke, and Botched, the Brandon Teena Story," Donna Minkowitz offers a profound exploration of the impact of culture on her personal experience and regrets surrounding her coverage of Brandon Teena's life and tragic death. Within the essay, Minkowitz embarks on a journey of introspection, examining the complex interplay between culture, identity, and the media's role in shaping public perception.
Minkowitz begins her narrative by delving into her own upbringing and the cultural influences that shaped her understanding of gender and identity. Growing up in a society entrenched in cisgender and heteronormative norms, she candidly acknowledges the presence of internalized homophobia and transphobia within herself. These deeply ingrained cultural beliefs and biases, she realizes, had a profound impact on her perceptions and actions as a journalist covering Teena's story.
As Minkowitz delves further into her reflections, she expands her focus to the broader cultural context in which Brandon Teena's life unfolded. She exposes the prevalence of stereotypes, misconceptions, and prejudices within society, all of which hindered a genuine understanding of Teena's experiences as a transgender man. These cultural norms perpetuated harmful narratives that obscured the complexities of Teena's identity and the challenges he faced.
Minkowitz takes a critical look at her own role as a journalist operating within this cultural landscape. She confronts the limitations and shortcomings of her reporting, acknowledging how her own biases and the prevailing cultural climate influenced her portrayal of Teena. She recognizes that her initial fascination with the story, combined with a desire to challenge societal norms, blinded her to the nuanced realities of Teena's life and the struggles faced by transgender individuals in a society rife with transphobia.
Through introspection, Minkowitz emphasizes the need for self-reflection and a deeper examination of one's biases and prejudices. She urges readers to critically analyze their own cultural conditioning and the impact it has on their understanding of marginalized communities. Minkowitz calls for a broader cultural shift—one that fosters acceptance, understanding, and empathy for transgender individuals and dismantles the harmful cultural norms perpetuated by society.
The essay invites readers to consider the profound influence of cultural context on perceptions, attitudes, and representations of gender identity. It underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity, education, and open dialogue as catalysts for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Minkowitz's introspection serves as a powerful call to action, urging individuals and society as a whole to challenge and dismantle the harmful cultural forces that perpetuate misrepresentation and harm.
In conclusion, "How I Broke, and Botched, the Brandon Teena Story" by Donna Minkowitz provides a deeply reflective exploration of the subject of culture within the context of her coverage of Brandon Teena's life. Through her original insights and introspection, Minkowitz underscores the vital role of culture in shaping perceptions, biases, and societal norms. The essay serves as a thought-provoking reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity, empathy, and the continuous quest for understanding in our collective journey toward a more inclusive and compassionate world.

My Statement on Tolkien 2019
[ French translation and German translation availible. ]
It has been incredibly difficult for me to speak on my experiences regarding my experiences of hostility and othering in spaces that I loved and still hold dear to my heart, and for that reason I have been silent. That is until now.
I have decided that now is the right time for me to come forward with my experience and statement regarding my negative experience as a person of colour engaging in Tolkien spaces.
I want people involved in the wider Tolkien community to reflect on their roles in the specific spaces they inhabit, and how you can foster a better environment for marginalised groups to interact and engage with those spaces in a safe and inclusive manner.
Take your time to listen and put effort into listening to fans of colour when they are speaking about their lived experiences and their grievances especially when they are speaking about a topic as personal as racism. Being critical of a work you love and the media surrounding it is not easy thing, but we need to recognise that these criticisms are valid and deserve to be taken seriously when it affects a collective of people across different backgrounds.
I want to preface this by stating that I am speaking only for myself and my own lived experience as a vocal young non-black POC in a predominantly white space. I acknowledge that my experience is by no means universal or indicative of all POC in Tolkien fandom spaces.
I also understand that real life interactions differ widely from interactions on online fandom spaces, but there are disturbing similarities across both online and real life spaces with specific regard to the environment and treatment of vocal POC in both.
The tragedy is many people do not realise their impact not only on the individuals involved, but on the wider attitude towards POC voices in fandom when the topic of racism is discussed. We need to build safe environments where critical discussions of diversity and race from the people most affected by them are taken to heart, not invalidated or spoken over as targets of microaggressions.
To give a bit of context, Tolkien 2019 was an in person conference organised by the Tolkien Society (which I was a member of at the time). The official website for Tolkien 2019 has been taken down but the Tolkien Society has a nice summary written in August 2018 breaking down the event here.
I was approached by the Education Secretary at the time about my possible involvement in a panel discussing the history and future of the Tolkien Society which I elaborate on further in my statement. It was the first time I had felt that I had a platform where I could freely express my voice as a diverse reader and consumer of Tolkien media who held diversity in Tolkien as a core value in the wider Tolkien brand.
I felt that as the only non-white member on the panel I had an obligation to speak out on the topic of diversity when it was raised. I tried to speak briefly about some of the points and discourses I had heard on portrayals of diversity in Tolkien media with as much nuance as I could manage at the time. In response to some points I had made I was met with vocal disapproval by some audience members and visible signs of disapproval and hostile body language from others.
This was made even more jarring when later during the course of the event when two white creators hinted at vague notions of diversity were met with a far greater degree of approval. The former instance was during the context of a panel regarding the upcoming LOTR on Prime series, and the latter was during a talk presented by the chair of the Tolkien Society.
I felt intimidated and reluctant to involve myself any further in the Tolkien fandom, especially in real life spaces as my experience at Tolkien 2019 had only solidified and reaffirmed my fears and unease I had engaging in a predominantly white fandom with few visible POC members and creators who tackle topics of diversity and racism in both the community and source texts.
Following this event I was approached by an affiliate of one of the attendees who very kindly took the time to listen to me and suggested that I should write a statement in response to my experience. To my knowledge, my statement has not been shared or published on any platform yet and this will be the first time I have ever spoken about it publicly.
Since then some of my thoughts and opinions on certain aspects of Tolkien fandom and meta have shifted or evolved which I will hopefully expand on in the future, but I wanted to share my initial unchanged statement I wrote reflecting my immediate reaction to my experience.
I want to be seen as a Tolkien creative and critical thinker above anything else, but I cannot move forward with my work without speaking about my lived experience in a space which has been consistently hostile to me and so many others across different Tolkien spaces for so many years starting with my account of this one experience.
I hope my statement finds itself in good hands and I will always be willing to engage with others about my experiences so long as you engage with me in good faith.
The statement I wrote on 25/09/2019 is as follows:
From the 9th to 11th of August of this year I attended a conference held by the Tolkien society aptly named “Tolkien 2019” that advertised itself as the “largest celebration of Tolkien ever held by the Society” in which I both spoke as a panelist and independant speaker. The event itself was a mixture of both formal and informal panels, papers presented by selected members of the society, and evening social events.
My invitation to speak on the “History of the Tolkien Society” panel was presented as deliberate choice made by the panel organiser as a gateway for discussion about diversity and representation in Tolkien. On the official programme, the panel was described as a discussion concerning “what the Tolkien Society and Tolkien fandom in general may become as it encounters digital spaces, issues of representation and diversity, academic interest and a myriad other factors that make up our lived experience today”.
Although there was much excitement and anticipation on my half in the weeks and days leading up to the event, it soon turned to dread when the tone and climate of the discussion dawned on me when I took my seat alongside five other panelists ranging from seasoned Tolkien scholars, long-time members of the Society, and a member with a leadership position within the Society. On that four person panel, I was the only one racialised as non-white. In fact, I was one of only three people in a room of approximately fifty to sixty people racialised as non-white.
It wasn’t long before the true motive of placing me — a young, new member of the Society, who felt already out of place and out of my depth even being offered the opportunity to participate in the first place — on a panel of what I perceived to be more seasoned members of the society.
When the topic of diversity and representation in the Tolkien fandom was raised by the moderator, I saw it as an opportunity for me to share my own experiences as a young fan who predominantly consumed Tolkien content online, as well as some observations I had made regarding the current pop-cultural perception of Tolkien as being heavily influenced, if not wholly entered around the Peter Jackson trilogies and being deeply ingrained with the issues that seep from those interpretations into our overall perception of the Tolkien brand.
One of the talking points that seemed to have caused the biggest uproar and dissent was one in which I referred Tolkien’s description of Sam’s hands as brown in two instances — the first in the Two Towers, and the second instance in Return of the King and how this has been translated into film as both literal and symbolic interpretations. The former in the Ralph Bakshi’s the “Lord of the Rings” released in 1978 in which I noted that the decision to portray Sam as more ethnically ambiguous compared to the other Hobbits was a deliberate choice, whereas the latter was depicted in the recent Peter Jackson trilogy released in the early 2000’s took the description symbolically and cast the white American actor Sean Astin for the role.
The backlash I received for this was, I believe, absolutely disproportionate to the views I expressed. I saw members frown and grunt in disapproval, as well as some visibly shake their heads at me. In spite of me parroting how I saw both interpretations as equally valid as a defence mechanism in the face of such an aggressive response to what to me seemed like an innocuous observation made by a young person of colour who did not see many portrayals of people of colour in Tolkien.
Comments such as “I don’t care who they cast as Sam whether he’s black, brown, yellow, blue or green!” and “Tolkien’s message is universal I don’t see how race factors into this!” were shouted in between points I was making, and countless others were made as an effort to dismiss the effort I put in to hopefully start an open dialogue about the lack of diversity in adaptations of Tolkien and how it has coloured our perception of the overall brand, and perhaps fantasy as a whole.
Some other talking points I decided to mention included Peter Jackson’s Easterlings (coded as being North African or Middle Eastern in the film) as being appallingly Orientalist and damaging in a post-911 world, as well as referring to Tolkien’s vague descriptions of certain characters and people groups that can be interpreted as ethnic coding or perhaps hint at a more diverse cast than the popular brand of Tolkien that may have us believe. I iterated that it is the responsibility of consumers of Tolkien and Tolkien related media to push for different interpretations of the text in order to break the perception that Tolkien’s works are entirely Anglo and Eurocentric with no place for people of colour in the vast world he had created in my opinion as a love letter to his own.
A month later it is still difficult for me to fully wrap my head around what I had experienced during the conference, much less articulating it in a statement, but if there is a note I would like to conclude on it would be this: it was never about changing Tolkien’s works, but reinterpreting his 20th century text littered with colonial artefacts and reimagining the foundations of his work through a 21st century lens in an attempt to decolonise the interpretation of his works in popular culture.
To change the way we read, write and depict the Tolkien brand is to fundamentally change the landscape of the entire genre of fantasy which has and still derives so heavily from Tolkien’s works and the global Tolkien brand.
End.

According to the World Health Organisation, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the Philippines on 20 January 2020. More than a year after, there are now more than 600,000 confirmed cases, nearly 13,000 deaths and a surge of 5000 new cases in one day. Approximately 41 percent of the total number of confirmed cases are from the National Capital Region (NCR), where Manila is located. The death toll from Duterte’s Drug War since July 2016 ranges from a conservative estimate of 8,663 people according to the UN Human Rights Council, to possibly thrice as high based on statements from the Philippine Commission on Human Rights. The official record from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the agency implementing Duterte’s Drug War, is at 6,011 deaths from July 2016 to December 2020.
Alarmingly, the national pandemic response is even being harnessed in the service of the Drug War with extrajudicial killings registering a 50 percent increase between April and July 2020. Both COVID-19 related deaths and extrajudicial killings linked with the War on Drugs have been popularly represented by the Duterte government as disconnected from, or outside of, all the range and repertoires of repression at the state’s disposal.
Yet prior to the pandemic, Filipinos were already primed for and inoculated to mass loss of life and human rights violations, precisely because of the militarism that has been the logic of security under Duterte’s rule. We can understand everyday life in the Philippines as part of an ongoing continuum of violence, from the first day that Duterte launched his war on drugs, to the present militarised response to the health crisis. The Philippines was already suffering a ‘murderous plague’ which made death paradoxically both an abstract and visceral reality for many Filipinos, even before the disease outbreak.
It matters, therefore, that we constantly articulate how tragedy and mass loss of life are routine and logical outcomes under Duterte and why this government must be made accountable for the murderous plague it has authored. Filipinos must maintain their demands for better leadership, crisis response and management despite the persistent gaslighting by the President, his spokespersons, and enabling members of his regime. The forthcoming May 2022 national elections have prompted discussions on the importance of leadership among specific sectors mobilised by the question, ‘pangulo’ or ‘pang-gulo’ (‘president’ or ‘nuisance’)? At the highest level of power, does the Philippines have someone who leads, or someone who self-servingly obstructs recovery and fuels division?
Drug war and the limits of militarised security
Duterte’s default approach has been to wield the military and police at every crisis. However, this approach generates its own crises because the truncated lens of militarism comes up inadequate in addressing the multidimensional root causes and consequences to much of the global security challenges we are facing today. Based on the best available science, and what COVID-19 is demonstrating globally, state leaders must be able to address a drastically changed security landscape where the heightened intensity and frequency of extreme events will threaten all areas of human life and ecosystems. What has been undeniable is that leaders disastrously fall short of managing crises—whether in the context of armed conflicts, disasters and climate change, or health pandemics—when they do not incorporate a range of perspectives and expertise.
Duterte’s military and police-driven approach to every national decision-making process is exclusionary. He has sought to frame Filipinos, especially frontline health workers who express their discontent, as ‘enemies’ who do nothing but complain. Because he reproduces and invests in militarising crises, he cannot but interpret differing views as an existential threat to his power. The Philippines therefore has a leader that forecloses spaces for civic deliberation and participation at a time when these are most needed.
The drug war has gradually created the institutional and rhetorical foundations that enable other forms of violence: the use of Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and ‘red-tagging’ to silence opposition; the compounded suffering of internally displaced communities as resources are diverted away from the forgotten crises in Marawi and Tacloban; and ongoing violence and development aggression against Indigenous peoples and environmental activists. Duterte’s war on drugs has been argued to satisfice the stages of genocide.
Death and disinformation due to ‘infodemic’
The pandemic is also mediated by a pervasive climate of disinformation in the Philippines. The deadly combination of militarism and disinformation has been effective in fragmenting and eliminating political opposition, and in state repression more generally. Over the past years, Philippine democracy has been constantly threatened and undermined by the rapid and increased production and dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. A study has shown how insidious, partisan and curated content is produced and circulated by “architects of networked disinformation”, including influencers, online celebrities, politicians in-house team’s, and marketing companies. These players have weaponized the internet to support and bolster the operations of Duterte’s administration in designing and implementing a political and militarist agenda.
An evident outcome of weaponizing social media platforms is the silencing of dissent. Paid trolls, bot armies and a range of fake news websites run by supporters of Duterte have targeted and harassed individuals and institutions. For instance, in 2018, Maria Ressa, the chief executive of Rappler, was the target of state-sponsored “patriotic trolling”, misogynistic comments and hate speech. Meanwhile, the Philippine government attempted to revoke Rappler’s license in 2018. Notably in 2020, Philippine lawmakers rejected the franchise renewal for ABS-CBN, a Philippine’s broadcasting company also critical of Duterte’s governance.
Misinformation and disinformation also impact the lives of ordinary Filipinos in national and transnational contexts. A report shows that Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 15 minutes each day on different social media channels. These online platforms have also been used to sustain ties among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families. For the ten million Filipinos spread across the world, social media and mobile applications have become valuable tools to remain connected to home. However, these channels serve as key sites for producing and disseminating fake information. For example, a study on the 2019 Philippine election shows how OFWs are targeted by online communities that disseminate falsehoods and manipulative content.
More recently, an ‘infodemic’ has emerged in tandem with the COVID-19 pandemic. The spread of hoaxes and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and attacks on the credibility of the World Health Organization (WHO) re-victimises all those who have died in the pandemic and the families they have left behind. In a digital environment muddled by falsehoods and inaccuracies, people are afforded narratives that only validate their own pre-existing beliefs and affirm experiences that reflect their immediate or narrow environment. This makes it all the more possible for those in positions of power and privilege to detach (and stay out of touch) from the harsh realities millions of Filipinos are facing.
The use of digital technologies at a time of crisis can stir heightened ambivalence among Filipinos. On the one hand, greater online connectivity affords the maintenance of intimate ties transnationally. However, it is the same connectivity that can potentially be used to distort understanding of social welfare, human rights, and personal and familial futures through the lens of fear. Akin to the pandemic, widespread disinformation is slowly but effectively killing mutual trust and civic participation in Philippine society. It does this by eroding Filipinos’ access to reliable information and their right to thrive in democratic spaces. Crucially, disinformation hinders Filipinos from seeing the structural inequalities, marginalisation and exploitation that implicates us all.  There is neither one person nor a “silver bullet” that can magically vanquish—in six months—what has been built over decades by political and economic systems in the Philippines. It will take care, collective action and mutual responsibility.
Stop the killings; stop the strongman
Crises can provide windows of opportunity to overhaul ossified harms done by this government, and repair what good is left. Deaths and killings may be mundane now but they do not have to be acceptable: not now and not in the future. There is a need to develop antidotes that can reclaim, secure and protect democracy. As the COVID-19 pandemic intersects with Duterte’s murderous plague, Filipinos are faced with clear lessons that can be brought to bear in the next election.
First, there is no path to “rapid” recovery and it takes inclusive governance and leadership to realise long-lasting and “crisis-proof” reconstruction. Moving forward, Filipinos might be more sceptical and suspicious of leaders promising to do everything without demanding shared responsibilities and recognising diverse expertise from the Filipino public. Globally, we are also seeing youth-led protests both from afar such as in the US, and closer in neighbouring Thailand and Myanmar, against police and military violence as well as outdated styles and systems of militarised authority. While their rule may seem inescapable at present, young people are taking the lead in sending a clear message: the myth of the ‘strongman’ is no more.
Second, the killings were indirectly enabled by the political fragmentation and societal division accelerated by digital technologies. What proved most effective in stifling collective action was the framing of political engagements in terms of “camp” politics and loyalties—us versus them / DDS versus Dilawan—instead of under a unifying identity of “the Filipino people.” Duterte’s success in fulfilling an initial populist desire for a ‘strongman leader’ is an outcome of previous failures in crisis response under the Aquino government. Rather than see Duterte and Aquino as oppositional, we need to see the violent continuity between the two different models of leadership.
Third, the rise and resilience of Duterte’s strongman rule is connected with his leveraging of underlying sexism, misogyny, class and regional prejudices in Philippine society. Clearly, Duterte’s misogyny is no laughing matter. Rape jokes are neither humorous nor harmless. His speeches form part of, and feed, societal violence. Finally, the path to stopping the killings will be long and difficult, but necessary. The governance challenges ahead will be more complex and difficult. An indispensable step in this direction is recognising and healing from collective grief on a transnational scale. Then the task of refocusing energies toward building new leaders and political agendas can begin.

TECHNOLOGY : A Blessing or a Curse?
Technology has become an inevitable part of our lives. We cannot imagine to survive without technology in today’s fast-moving world. When employment, socialization and cultural propagation happens with globalization, we cannot survive without technological involvements. The Corona virus pandemic has moreover proven, how important technology is for us, to stay connected, work, communicate and basically survive. In fact, this can be an opportune moment for researchers to attend to journal call for paper with the topic of technology becoming an inseparable part of our lives, such that soon we will move, eat, sleep technology.
As time goes by technology becomes more advance and innovative which leads to more many discoveries. However, as technology improves, people as well gives their definition through their own understanding. But what does really technology means? It might seem a straightforward question, but technology is about more than gadgets and gizmos.
Technology ("science of craft", from Greek τέχνη, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -λογία, -logia") is the sum of any techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation without detailed knowledge of their workings. Systems (e.g. machines) applying technology by taking an input, changing it according to the system's use, and then producing an outcome are referred to as technology systems or technological systems.
Technology is not a neutral word. Different people will give it different meaning depending on their viewpoint and context.
Andy Lane explains what it means to different people. The role and impact of technology in both our personal and working lives is ever growing. Understanding how people shape technology and how technology shapes people's interactions with each other and the natural world is important not only for those who research, develop and implement new technologies but also for all those people and organizations that have to use those technologies in their working and personal lives.
Research has found evidences on the contribution of technology to our daily lives. In fact, technology can save lives. Major operations, scans and medical diagnoses happen through scientific and technological discoveries. Communication, work and education are almost impossible without technology today. For researchers and academicians, journal call for paper are more readily available because of digital publication platforms, all of which involve technology. Technology has filled our time with meaningful content and entertainment so that we feel satisfied and happy.
However, let us reflect on 7 most important reasons for which we require technology:
Communication– The first and foremost purpose that technology serves is communication. Social media and other technological applications have brought families together. Today we can find long lost school mates over Facebook, twitter, Instagram and we can reinstate our communication. In fact, we can even communicate with world leaders, prominent figures over these platforms. Communication is required in professional fields as well, and technology ensures that we can communicate with the world from wherever we are. We cannot imagine our lives without a smart phone, but there was a time when there were no mobile phones at all. Families are much less worried about their children these days, because phones give them the information about the whereabouts of children, so they are much more relieved about their safety than they were before. Technology Helps in Legal Work– With our safety comes the safety of the community and the prime responsibility falls upon legal systems. Technology has helped a lot in improving law and order. Today we have phone cameras, CCTV cameras etc. which testify for crime scenes. We have the computer and internet to find any criminal from anywhere with a global database. Improved technological gadgets have helped in improving forensics, cyber crime treatment to a great extent. Security– Technology provides us security. Several home security devices like spy scam, door cam, anti-theft applications are linked with our smart phones. Most of them are electronically built for better safety and security purposes. Today we use a camera to see who stands outside our door, in place of an eye-hole. We can in fact, talk to the person before opening the door. Again, mobile phones make us very confident on streets. When we have a gadget of communication, we know we can make a call whenever in trouble. Internet– Globalization wouldn’t have been possible without internet. The fact that we can connect and work from any part of the world is because we have internet. We can have client meets and requirements from all over the globe and we can assimilate information and process delivery because we have internet. In fact, Covid has proven that internet can keep our lives going even when we are locked down in houses, barely anything is affected for our work, if it is internet based.
Knowledge– Gone are those days, when we had to run from one library to another within our city to find books and materials for our school-college projects. Even then we would not get the appropriate information required in research work. But today, with the help of Google, we are able to browse, any type of and any amount of information required for attending journal call for paper. Even for enlightenment and knowledge, we can browse the web. We can learn if we want at any age, anywhere, because we have internet and computer.
Education– Technology has shown us how we can overcome the barriers of time and place with computer and internet. This has made education more accessible and affordable to people across the world. Today, one person in India can learn from Harvard or MIT, even from their home, because of online educational platforms which enriches learning. Online school and college is not just an idea or luxury; it is a necessity especially when there is a pandemic situation. Online learning is much for cost effective for students and universities, so every other university has shifted their programs online. This is in fact, gen-next education system where schools will move online for affordable and uninterrupted learning. Besides technological gadgets like kindle and tablet are making reading and writing easier and lighter.
Entertainment– Technology has contributed heavily to the world of entertainment. From video and computer games to smart televisions, a wide range of technological inventions have helped us engage our free time. Even today, movie watching is no longer limited to a theatre space. The way we read on a computer, we watch movies on digital platforms. Online streaming platforms and applications are moving the entertainment world to a complete digitization mode. We live in the age of technology. We commute by automobiles and airplanes and communicate by emails and mobiles. The media and the Internet provide us the latest information from all over the world. Movies filled with hi-tech special effects entertain us. Air conditioners and room heaters keep our life comfortable despite climatic inconveniences. The list goes on. Technology has transformed almost every aspect of our lives. Of course, a few of us may have concerns about the pollution and environmental problems that technology has led to. But overall most people feel that technology has benefited us immensely.
In the mid-20th century, people have gained control technology sufficient to leave the Earth's atmosphere and space for the first time. The technology used to know the techniques or methods of organization to solve the problem by the method of right and serve the purpose. Technology affects the person and the possibility of other kinds of animals to adapt to the natural environment. Human species has begun using the technology that makes it simple natural tools. Discovery of prehistory, the ability to control fire increased food sources and the invention of the wheel helped humans to travel and explore your surroundings. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes to develop weapons and destructive power has evolved over the centuries, from clubs to nuclear weapons. Technology also has an impact on society and the environment in many ways. In many societies, technology has helped bring a more developed economy and allow the entertainment show class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, harm the earth and its surroundings. Different use of technology influences the values of society and new technology often increases the new ethical questions.
By the mid 20th century, humans had achieved supremacy of technology sufficient to leave the atmosphere of the Earth for the first time and space. Technology used for know the techniques or method of organization to solve the problem by the right method and serve some purpose. Technologies are affecting human as well as other animal kinds ability to adapt to their natural environments. The human species began to use technology by conversion the natural things into simple tools like How produce afire by a simple way, Wheel help the human in travel, Make a coat by simple way.
The aim of the technology when it began is good. The people want by simple tools make something help them in daily life. So, we invite a lot of something to help us and us it daily. Now, these things we can't life without it. Like Electricity, Air-Condition etc.
And a lot of things we use it and can't imagine our life without it. So, the technology helps us in our life to be more easily. When a technology has been used by communities to compete to develop themselves. Therefore, the technology has two faces are the face of good and the other face is evil. And with that despite the good start that was designed to facilitate people's lives. For example, when he invented dynamite was to open the mines know, and iron and other minerals, but after then used in World War this is how the beginning but the end is bad. So he makes Nobel PRIZE to encourage people to make a good invite which help the world and people.
Technology improves our goodness of life. By use the technology we have important discoveries. In our life we depend in technology in everything in our life. When you think about the technology you found yourself use it every minute. So, it is important in our life and the life will be different without it. The technology enters in all fields like pharmacy, medicine and engineering. It's difficult to see field without technology. In medicine it is make a big different. Now we can treat the patient without make meeting. It saves our time and effort and more and more in this field. The technology makes our life easier. And the big invite which convert the impossible to possible. It is the internet which can connect and communicate with people who are miles away from us. It's only one of the many examples we could give it to verify the fact that the technology is a blessing.
All media depend on the technology. Now we know what's happen in any region in world by the media. It's easy now but in the past it's like difficult to imagine it. But the technologies make a big Event in our life when something invite like computer, internet, cell phone.
These inventions changed a human life in twentieth century. But the important inventions in the past are we see it everywhere, in cars, trucks, airplanes, ships, car interiors, toys and more. Life will never be the same without wheels. They range from wooden carts and carriages, a simple device, but it provides over time developed. With so many uses and applications, is still part of the human race, and one of the first steps of civilization. Can you imagine that he does not take a taxi to the hotel? Instead of this situation, a few miles with tons of pockets? Or did he get an hour's walk to the mall?
People are left thumb, which led to the development of tools. Simple instruments such as the use of sharp rocks into knives and spears cut. Large rock as a used hammer has become a stream. We have our houses, animals, trapped in our rooms built and improve our way of life with tools. Interestingly, some mammals and birds use a variety of tools.
System in which waste collected and disposed of at the same time is more than somewhere useful. Old people saw it and were among the first to invent system. Today we rarely think of the network pipes beneath our feet and make sure that our waste stays out of our eyes and nose! I'm glad to know that we are not stool on the floor. Well, most of the time.
Dirt paths taken by hunters were from vehicles, but it was invented after the invention of the wheel, there is a real need for better roads. Dirt trodden path now, wood and stone and brick streets. For convenience of use, to transport routes, the world is a success. Today is the backbone of the economy and society. Consider buying a life without the road. We lived in the houses at random. Transported goods slowed. There will be more accidents.
The concept of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally used only for machines, and challenge the traditional norms. Philosophical a discussion about current and future use of technology in our society, with disagreements about the technology improves the human condition or worsens the situation. So technology is not a blessing or a curse, is both. We cannot determine whether one of them. We live between technologies. Travel by car and aircraft and to communicate via telephone and email and telephone. The media and the Internet make us the latest information from around the world.
Movies packed with hi-tech special effects to entertain us. Air conditioners and heaters to keep our lives well, but climatic disadvantages.
Technology has changed virtually all face in our lives. Some of us may have problems with pollution and environmental problems as the technology lead. But in general most people feel that technology has benefited us more. The technology is now so fundamental to human life. No one can deny the benefits of technology.
But most people cannot see another hand. Technology has two faces. Despite the encounter, there are many problems caused by technology. For example, in the past, you rarely see people with glasses, now almost all teen glasses. The reason is that many teenagers are using computers for a long time, to the extent that destroys their own eyes. Moreover, people today rely on technology too.
Most people complain when they could not use computer for the special day with teenagers. People complain when the computer accident and not save the file you worked on. Humans rely on so much technology that no one would survive if there is no technology in the world.
Moreover, science and technology acted as helping hands in medical field and everyday life of each and every individual. However, the invention of the artificial intelligence has become the challenging aim of worldwide engineers. Scientists and engineers have joined much effort to promote communication by the invention of multiple devices showing more and more sophistication at all times. The creation of mobile phones, computers and the monstrous network commonly known as the internet allow people to keep in touch around the globe which is a blessing for many individuals separated from their family due to working purposes or studies. Thanks to the well-known device called webcam, one may visualize and converse with his partner live and direct through his personal computer although being distance apart. However, due to the unprecedented freedom in communication via network many people misuse it. We should ask ourselves, how many teenagers use the internet to chat and lose time together with money after unknown people?
During the last decades, the medical field has been witnessing many modifications brought about by the latest technologies to cure people with more efficiency and accuracy. In the past destroying tumerous cells without damaging the surroundings and producing side effects was a challenging aim for many doctors. Nevertheless, after the invention of infra-red apparatus and the ‘nanoshells’, this has become a child’s play. The nanoshells are microscopic silica particles coated with gold that sticks to the cancerous cells. Passing the nanoshells under infra-red rays increases the temperature of the cell and destroys it. Still although this experiment has been successful on mice, we have to wait up to year 2010 before this new therapy is applied on human beings. Moreover, scanning an unborn baby from the mother’s womb is today a reality. Isn’t it a thing that brings happiness to the future parents? However, it should be brought to mind that such curative way of diseases may act as a booster for the level of aging population resulting into overpopulation. If life expectancy may be prolonged, it will definitely be a problem for the coming generation.
As made obvious by latest observations, we should admit that information technology has invaded the life of each and everyone. All the daily routine depends on sophisticated electronic kits. The invention of the microwaves for instance has facilitated the life of numerous people around the world, be it in the kitchen or a restaurant. According to scientists, food coming from microwaves does not have side effects on the health of people. However the creation of such facilities may sometime be blame as people are becoming more and more lazy day after day. Hence, shouldn’t we blame information technology for the mercurial rise in the rate of obesity?
During the recent decades, engineers and scientists have joined hands together to put to existence the artificial intelligence commonly known as robots. The aim of this project is to conceive machines that may think on their own, work and develop emotions as well. As picturised in the science fiction movie ‘I. Robots’, it was made crystal clear that it’ll happen a day where Man’s inventions would like to conquer humanity, would revolt and revenge. If such day happens it would be terrible to every single individual. Then, who should we blame science and technology or the scientists themselves?
In the same line of thought, it should not be forgotten that the invention of so many machines will make unemployment reach its higher level. Moreover, massive destruction caused by biological weapons will definitely blame the new technology. Furthermore, the introduction of the newly invented system of RFID commonly known as Radio Frequency Identification in supermarket would greatly help in time saving.
As discussed in the above argumentation, science and technology have immensely helped in improving the way of communication across the world. Moreover, it greatly eased the way of curing diseases and has conquered the life of everyone. However, the invention of robots may facilitate as well as become a burden for humanity. Hence, information technology has brought much benefit to the world, but unconsciously it has caused much damage to Man. Therefore, deciding whether science and technology is a curse or a blessing remains quite complex.
In conclusion, technology is a blessing or a curse, is both. What does change in attitude is how they use it. We cannot coward on nuclear weapons for the damage it produces, which teaches that the epidemic. Everything is better as the technology used to create everything. What will stay in our consciousness, it's what we do with it either bless or curse our environment, and as a result of our own lives.

The shortcomings of secular leftism become obvious every single time Charlie Hebdo published another fucking piece of hate speech and they refuse to acknowledge it as hate speech even though it’s basically just a nazi-era antisemitic caricature with “PROPHET MUHAMMAD” written underneath it.
And maybe some “anti-racists” or something will pipe in to “defend” us with “oh, it iz against zeir religion to draw ze mahomet” which also makes us look ridiculous because 1. that’s only kind of true, there is a wider discussion of that and 2. people are basically not wrong to say that enforcing that is a police state measure that shouldn’t be acceptable. So all they’re doing is making a straw-man to represent the weakest, most hyperconservative possible take that could come out of a Muslim and is actually genuinely irreconcilable with a lot of the left’s values, values which I, and most Muslims, and most leftists, honestly hold. What’s more is that the position they present is genuinely violent and bad; the reason they shouldn’t draw the Prophet isn’t because it’s “against my religion” but because in the political climate we live in it’s inherently an act of hate speech to do so..
Westerners don’t consider it offensive to make fun of their respected political and religious figures, and this is a genuine cultural difference between them and a lot of Muslims particularly from south asia. I don’t think they should, I think the westerners should be free to “practice their culture” or whatever when they’re not killing my family about it. So when the liberals make this purely an issue of “oh ze iZlAm SaYs zat it iz, ‘ow you say, ‘ArAaAaAaM to draw zeir prophet!” they’re making us look like people who want to violently enforce something based solely on our (real or alleged) cultural values, which still agrees that we’re trying to ~eNfOrCe sHaRiA LaW~ in europe. If all they want to do is draw him, whatever. We can talk about that but it’s a different conversation.
Because when they draw Jesus they’re not drawing him as a hook-nosed banker jew with a suicide vest and a child bride, they’re drawing him in a way that is basically respectful and possibly with maybe a thumbs up if they want to be edgy, like it’s fucking different and if you can’t see that you’re just not engaging in good faith.
Aside from the cartoon itself, which nobody will even see by comparison, the publication of it in the first place, surrounded by a bunch of media fanfare and liberal anticipation, is, itself, a massive piece of performance art with the message that it’s good to #trigger all the angry barbarian peoples from out yonder in order to civilise us to French sophistication and defend freeze peach in contrast to the eastern despotism from which we all eagerly await western liberalism to free us, when we’re not busy migrating to the west in hordes to impose it on them from our positions of extreme political and social influence as refugees of ongoing global conflicts and genocides.
This recent publication comes weeks after Macron outlined new repressive police measures which had the explicit, stated purpose of stopping Muslims in France from developing an independent culture from the mainstream in a country where there’s literally a fucking burka ban that “even” liberals defend as “french culture”.
The basic message is secular fascist newspapers can do whatever it is they want and any voiced objection will be met immediately with a harsh punitive action from both the state and polite society. Again the secular left refuses to acknowledge that this is the situation and that this is a measure meant to humiliate a thoroughly subjugated people. They consider that they should be “respectful” of “our beliefs” but they do not actually criticise the power play against us and even participate in it by proclaiming themselves mediator instead of deferring to Muslims on this issue.
These basic normal foundational cornerstones of French culture, and global liberalism more broadly, tangibly and obviously lead to unthinkable violence against us on a global scale, and it’s good to be radicalised against that. The issue isn’t that it “leads to extremism” as if each of us has an inner terrorist just waiting for us to hulk out when we experience one too many microaggressions, but that Charlie Hebdo is actually a fascist publication and a huge part of the justifying apparatus for the past 20 years of western re-colonisation of the middle east, and, again, everyone should be radicalised against that because it is bad, if we’re radicalised against it and you’re not that’s a you problem and reflects a shortcoming in your analysis or organisation or both.
But even the liberals who think (for whatever reason) that they’re radicals will talk about “preventing radicalisation” among Muslim youth as if radicalism is some brand that belongs to them and them exclusively and we can’t be allowed to get our little terrorist mitts on it. They’re allowed to be radical and we’re not. And that right there is how you can tell they aren’t serious about the whole revolution thing, because revolution as they understand it demands a broad-based coalition of people willing to take direct action and who have a common analysis (that it’s their job to at least inform with their theoretical knowledge) about which actions should be taken and against what. They make no effort whatsoever to reach out to our obviously highly motivated and marginalised community with any of their talk of class solidarity because they’re a part of the same apparatus which keeps us marginalised and cooperate fully with it as far as we are concerned.
And the secular left agrees that the cartoons are racist and agrees that that’s bad and agrees that french liberalism sucks ass and is violent, racist, and nakedly imperialistic, but there has never been an instance of a left organisation to my knowledge that’s gone so far as to actually stand in solidarity with Muslims protesting against liberal Islamophobia. While the secular left may condemn islamophobia on its own terms, it never stands with Muslims and accepts Muslim leadership even when we’re protesting obvious violence and hate speech directed at us. Secular leftism and secular antifa agree that it’s good to be radical against a violent society in which hate speech is a normal accepted and even expected value and in which global leaders openly call for repressive police state measures against Muslims specifically on a good day, they even agree that it’s good and proper to use violence in such situations to prevent authoritarian overreach against persecuted minorities, but the moment we do it, it’s an act of terrorism that all radicals liberals have to Condemn Condemn Condemn or else.
And if we defend ourselves as Muslims, as Hannah Arendt called for when she said that if one is attacked as a Jew one must defend oneself as a Jew, not as a world-citizen or a defender of the rights of man, or some shit, global radliberal leftism will never have a word in support of us.
It claims to be better, and it might actually even be genuinely preferable, but it still lacks any interaction or understanding of Muslim analyses of the violence against us and don’t even think to try to theorise it themselves outside of some shallow acknowledgement of a purely economic “imperialism” or racism, which is only a part of it. And so as a result the global left inevitably ends up with a far-right analysis of one kind or the other on this; either censorship is good if it hurts people (”of colour”)s feelings or it’s bad to protest hate speech by unapproved means.

Taylor Swift is the millennial Bruce Springsteen.
If there were any doubts about this, they should have been dispelled by her latest release: the haunting Folklore, which filters the exact kinds of story-songs Springsteen excels at through Swift’s modern, orchestral-pop aesthetic. The album has been one of the best-received of her career, but then, the response to essentially everything she’s produced since her 2010 album Speak Now has involved critics grudgingly being dragged toward having respect for her skills.
The overlaps between millennial Swift (30 and born in 1989) and baby boomer Springsteen (70 and born in 1949) — both of whom are among the best songwriters alive right now — are considerable beyond their songwriting prowess. But comparisons, by necessity, must start there.
Both musicians love songs about a kind of white Americana that’s never really existed but that the central characters of which feel compelled to chase anyway. They use those songs to tell stories about those people and the places they live. They’re terrifically good at wordplay. Both are fascinated by the ways that adolescence and memories of adolescence continue to have incredible power for adults. Both are amazing at crafting bridges that take already good songs to another level. And both write songs featuring fictional people whose lives are sketched in via tiny, intimate details that stand in for their whole selves.
For example: The opening lines to Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” (“The screen door slams / Mary’s dress waves / Like a vision she dances across the porch / as the radio plays”) tell you everything about that woman and the man observing her.
Similarly, the opening lines of Swift’s “All Too Well” (“I walked through the door with you, the air was cold / but something ‘bout it felt like home somehow and I / left my scarf there at your sister’s house / and you still got it in your drawer even now”) tell you everything about this doomed relationship and the nostalgia both people involved in it still feel, compressed into a tiny little stanza.
Springsteen released “Thunder Road” when he was 25; Swift released “All Too Well” when she was 22. Both songs continue to stand as touchstones for who the artists were at that point in their lives.
But leave this comparison aside for a moment. What’s most interesting about drawing this connection are the ways in which the overlap between Springsteen and Swift’s styles can tell us about how our culture treats art made by men versus art made by women — and art made by baby boomers versus art made by millennials.
Springsteen and Swift each entered the music industry as young wunderkinds with lots to prove. Springsteen’s first album — the loose and rambling Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. — was released when he was just 23. He had been playing in bands all around New Jersey for most of his teens, and signed a record deal with Columbia Records at 22.
He was expected to become an acoustic folk singer in the vein of Bob Dylan, at a time when the music industry was uniquely preoccupied with finding the “next” Bob Dylan. Springsteen quickly flaunted those expectations, assembling a group of musicians who would go on to be known as the E Street Band, in the name of creating a sound that captured a massive, orchestral blast of rock. Springsteen would finally perfect this sound on his third album, 1975’s Born to Run, and he’s been a global superstar ever since, even decades after reaching his pinnacle with 1984’s Born in the USA.
Swift’s rise was slightly more meteoric. She released her debut album, Taylor Swift, when she was just 16, and it featured songs that she had written as a freshman in high school. Swift broke into the industry via country music, and her country-ish second album, 2008’s Fearless, won her the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Just as Springsteen shirked folk in the name of rock, Swift’s sound quickly shifted away from the girl-with-a-guitar country archetype and more toward pop. By her fourth album, 2012’s Red, she had largely left country music behind.
(A fun game: If you line up Swift and Springsteen’s album releases roughly by how old they were when they recorded them, you’ll find surprisingly similar career trajectories. For instance, Born to Run and Swift’s 2014 album 1989 were released when their respective artists were 25. Both broke the artists through to even wider acclaim than they had before.)
Yet the two artists’ backgrounds are quite different, which may explain the different ways in which they’ve understood American political divides. Springsteen grew up in a blue-collar family in New Jersey, while Swift is the daughter of a former Merrill Lynch stockbroker who could afford to move the entire family to Nashville, Tennessee, when his daughter showed a talent for songwriting.
Springsteen’s songs have always reflected growing up in a world where poverty is just a lost paycheck away, even as he’s become incredibly rich. Swift has no such perspective. Her songs take place largely in a wistful world where money is rarely an object. And the artists came of age in very different political climates, too.
But the political divide has narrowed in recent years. Swift has taken a recent turn toward more political topics — particularly social justice issues involving the mistreatment of women and LGBTQ rights. That turn stems from her struggles to differentiate herself as an artist in an industry that routinely turns young, beautiful women into disposable products, wringing out of them a few years of hit singles and then tossing them aside. Her embrace of the ways her growing sense of (extremely white) feminism helped her attain more artistic control over her image has slowly but surely led to a greater understanding of the yawning disparities inherent to the US. She is more tapped into the ways that power is unequally distributed throughout American society and increasingly speaks out to that effect. (She’s still pretty lousy at confronting class issues, though.)
But even with all of their similarities as songwriters and increasing similarities as explicitly political artists — and even with all of the awards they have won and records they have sold — there’s still a knee-jerk insistence that Swift is either too self-obsessed or too much a creation of the music industry, while Springsteen went from being rock’s heir apparent to an elder statesman with only a few bumps along the way. And the reasons for that disparity go well beyond any artistic differences or similarities they might possess.
Tumblr media
The most obvious difference between the reception of Springsteen and Swift is also the most obvious difference between the two of them as people: He is a man, and she is a woman.
Swift didn’t exactly discourage listeners from constantly parsing her lyrics to figure out which of her famous exes she was singing about early in her career; she even hid hints in her liner notes to help fans decode her clues. But the degree to which she was written off, for years, as a fundamentally unserious and self-involved artist reflects the ways in which domestic and romantic concerns are written off as unimportant when women talk about them.
By comparison, Springsteen has so many songs about teenage boys crushing on teenage girls, but few people try to figure out who he’s talking about when he mentions the almost mythical “Mary” in songs throughout his career. Perhaps it’s because he wasn’t dating famous people as a teenager, and perhaps because it’s sadly still too common to think a man singing about an adolescent crush has more artistic merit than a woman doing the same thing.
Even in the wake of Folklore’s release, many corners of the music-discussing internet insist upon talking about the album more in terms of Swift’s male collaborators — namely Aaron Dessner of The National and Justin Vernon (a.k.a. Bon Iver), both indie-rock royalty — than in terms of her own talents, even when, say, Dessner does a whole interview with Pitchfork talking extensively about Swift’s preternatural songwriting talents. The idea that Taylor Swift has somehow been “created” by someone is one that seems to persist, regardless of how much control she has over her own image.
But the ways in which people doubt Swift’s talent, or her control over her image, reflect larger questions about how baby boomers remade pop culture in their image versus how millennials continue to do.
Baby boomers were born into the era of radio’s dominance over American airwaves, and television entered their lives during their childhoods. The presence of these mass media influenced how much pop culture boomers could be exposed to, pushing into hyperdrive the artistic loop of influence becoming creation. American popular art exploded and proliferated as a result.
Whether that explosion led to the rise of rock and pop music or the invention of the cinematic blockbuster, baby boomers took the popular forms their parents adored and accelerated them toward something more raucous and purely entertaining.
The dominant new medium of millennials’ lives was the internet, which arrived when we were still very young. And a major element of internet culture is remix culture. From the earliest days of the “information superhighway,” jokes that mashed up disparate elements of pop culture — now we’d call them memes — were incredibly common, because the central idea of the internet has always been many people iterating on an idea rather than one person releasing that idea into the world.
Inherent to this kind of remixing is the idea of transforming something, often something disreputable, into something else. Thus, many of the greatest millennial artists work in forms that have previously been written off as unworthy — like, say, pop music — because the gatekeepers in those areas weren’t as likely to be aging baby boomers whose taste was ossifying. (This progression is not all that dissimilar from what the boomers did to the popular culture they were born into.)
Millennial artists grew up amid the splintering of the monoculture and, therefore, feel less of an obligation toward it than older generations might. When all you’ve known are niches, it’s better to try to find a niche that appeals to you and explore it as much as possible, then hope enough people come along for the ride.
Swift’s eagerness to collaborate with other artists who really excite her isn’t a uniquely millennial trait: Artists have been doing this since artists have existed. That she is only too happy to spread that credit around (even as her increasingly well-known “voice memos” that show her coming up with the central ideas behind her songs center her authorship first and foremost) is a testament to how millennial artists feel comfortable with both celebrating their influences and revealing how their art gets built, brick by brick, often thanks to the work of other people.
This is not to say that all baby boomer or millennial artists operate exactly the same way as Springsteen or Swift. Both artists write music that is equal parts heartbreaking and fun, evocative, and ephemeral. They’re constantly searching for their version of an America that does not exist, while not forgetting to make sure that we all have some fun in the one that does.
The impulse they share to tell stories about average Americans searching for meaning amid a crumbling world is a natural one for artists in the US. Yet Springsteen has so often been celebrated for doing just that, his rugged vision of a fading nation and talent for making national crises deeply personal treated as authentic and brilliant.
By comparison, Swift is often derided for how she digs into the ways personal apocalypses visit themselves onto the rest of reality, making her something like Springsteen’s inverse. The struggles she faces are deeply rooted in biases against women, the genre of music she operates in, and her generation. It’s worth reexamining the notions that drive this disparity in the two artists’ reception, if nothing else.
Perhaps we take Springsteen more seriously than Swift because he’s a man, or because all the great rockers of his generation have been venerated by time and nostalgia, or because his influences were men like Chuck Berry and Woody Guthrie instead of Shania Twain, Patsy Cline, and a litany of contemporary collaborators. But one of art’s great pleasures is finding the ways in which artists of different generations talk about the same topics across the span of years.
Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift craft their impeccable story-songs utilizing the tropes of very different musical genres. But they’re equally good at crafting songs built to both sing loudly on the freeway and accompany a flood of tears in the wake of some new heartache. Different as they might be, Springsteen and Swift are always talking about the same thing — all of the ways that every new day, no matter how promising, carries within it the potential to bring about the end of the world all over again. Until then, though, let’s sing about it.
ts1989fanatic all of that just to Tell us something swifties have known for years, the music industry is sexist and misogynistic DUH!!!

12 Angry Men: A Product of the Times
Despite what shows like Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best would have you believe, the 1950s in America were not a ‘simpler’ time.
The soldiers came home from World War II, the economy expanded, and the nation’s population grew and thrived, all seeming like absolute wins in our nation’s history.  The suburbs grew, and the ideal nuclear families began popping up.  Everyone dressed to the nines, the War was over, and so was the Depression that preceded it.  America was prosperous again.
At the same time, the Korean War began.  McCarthyism kicked off a terrified hysteria about the invasion of Communism.  Sputnik was launched, the Cold War was off and running, and Americans lived in fear behind their white picket fences.  Men went back to work, women went back to the home.  Rock and roll was born, and the young people, now called teenagers, started rebelling against the conformity of their parents.  Racial tensions began rising.  Oppressed people across America began looking to the future for change.
This was the world when 12 Angry Men made its debut in theaters.
Tumblr media
Why am I telling you all of this?
Simple.
In order to truly understand and analyze any work of fiction, we must first contextualize it.  To do that, we have to know what the culture was like at the time.
Why?
As I’ve mentioned many times on this blog, no piece of media is an island.  Everything we watch, read, or listen to is a direct product of the culture it was created in.  The creators were influenced by things around them, be they other pieces of media or simply events and attitudes of the time, and as a result, the film, television show, or book is a reflection of the culture, be it critical of it or embracing of it.
Such is the case with 12 Angry Men.
Tumblr media
The premise of a jury made up entirely of middle-to-late aged, middle-class white men passing a decision on a Puerto Rican boy from the slums seems, by its very nature, firmly set in the era of the 1950s.  The attitudes of multiple jurors seems to emphasize this fact with plenty of prejudice against the defendant for his background, ethnic and otherwise, his age, and even his relationship with his father.  12 Angry Men is definitely a film that is discernibly made in an era that is behind us.  To some, that would be enough to seal its doom with the ultimate stamp of disapproval any ‘old’ movie can get: the verdict of ‘Dated’.
As those of us who indulge in older films are more than aware of, sometimes, older movies just don’t hold up quite so well.  When that happens, oftentimes the film is referred to as ‘dated’.  Oftentimes, the things that people consider ‘outdated’ are things that can’t be helped: slang, clothing, hairstyles, special effects, technology, or even styles of storytelling that were popular at the time of the film’s release.
Therein lies the problem.
By that logic, that definition of the term dated, every single piece of media ever made is ‘dated’ and therefore, nothing is ‘timeless’.  This is bad news for every creator of art who desires to make something that will outlast them.  If everything is connected to the culture, the times it was created in, then nothing is worth watching outside of the era it was created in.  This would lead to many classic films, television shows, and books becoming long-forgotten.  Even now, there are many who don’t like watching things made before the date of their birth, claiming they are ‘cringey’ and ‘dated’.
Again, by that definition, they’re right.
Tumblr media
Here, though, we have a different definition.
The term ‘dated’, the idea of being directly connected to the era and culture of a piece of media’s creation, is easy to forgive when the ‘datedness’ extends to a mullet, a mixtape, or a money-shot that looks a little cheesy by modern standards.  However, that form of dated is not the problem.
‘Dated’ is really only used in a negative context when the movie or show it is describing is not as enjoyable to modern audiences as it was when it was released, suggesting that the passage of time has done more to damage the film than credit it.  This definition of the term ‘dated’ exonerates films that have not lost the enjoyability of their core story in the years that have followed.
Being ‘dated’ is far more damaging when it is attached to outdated ideas.  It is there that we have our problem.
An outdated idea can damage a film ten times more than any pop-culture reference therein.  These are the films based around inherently problematic elements, that never address (and in some cases seem to promote) ideas that we now know are problems.  It is this definition of ‘dated’ that we need to apply in order to tell how well 12 Angry Men has held up.
Tumblr media
Looking past the clothes and the hair is the glaring problem of the all-white, all-male jury.  Definitely an effective reminder that this film was made in the 1950s, for sure, but that could be as much a reminder of the times as it was an effect of them, for as the film tells us, there’s quite a lot of bigotry going on in 1950s America.
The only character in the film who is not explicitly Caucasian is the unnamed defendant, the Puerto Rican boy from the slums.  It is his fate in the hands of the twelve men, and unfortunately, to some, his fate doesn’t seem to matter.  Juror #10 notably holds the opinion that he is one of ‘them’, displaying superiority and prejudice that cannot be overlooked as ‘harmless’.  During his rant on the subject at the end, he is ignored, abandoned, shut down by his fellow jurors, who are more fair-minded.  As Juror #9 (Curiously, the oldest of the bunch) points out early in the film:
“Only an ignorant man can believe that…Do you think you were born with a monopoly on the truth?”
An important idea in this film is that of open-mindedness, of fairness to our fellow men.  The movie stands as a jarring mirror to some of the bigoted ideas held by many in the 1950s, in more ways than one.  While the film definitely has a biting opinion of those who look down on people from other backgrounds (ethnic or otherwise), there’s also an interesting look at the youth of the 1950s in the film.
The defendant is a young man, basically a boy, accused of killing his father after a fight.  In the first age of teenage rebellion, Juror #3 speaks the words of parents who feel wronged by their children, while simultaneously carrying the guilt of spurning them to rebellion in the first place.  The idea of making your sons into ‘men’ at age nine is treated as being a problem, driving a wedge between both father and son, a possibly irreparable one.
Tumblr media
These themes alone would seem to date the film right away, with the heavy emphasis on ideas that were prevalent at the time, if it weren’t for the context with which the ideas are viewed.
Rather than glorify either idea, or present them as being acceptable in the culture, both of these elements are viewed critically by the narrative and the characters within it.  The film, while not exonerating the rebellion of the children, acknowledges the part that parents play in it, and outright views racial prejudice with disdain.  Not only was this a demonstration of progressive thinking, it’s also still relevant today.
In fact, there isn’t a whole lot about this movie that isn’t relevant today.  The idea of ensuring that our justice system works is one that will likely never go out of style, and the critical mirror the film holds up to some of the ideas of 1957 holds up very well in an era where some haven’t moved too far beyond the same thinking.  The film, and the ideas it was based around, still resonate with audiences who see it today, managing to leave an impression over sixty years since it’s original release.
On the other hand, there is a total lack of female characters entirely, (hence the title), leading to some remakes to add a female judge (to keep the name) or change it to 12 Angry Jurors or in some cases, 12 Angry Men and Women (In other cases, the title has been changed to 12 Angry Women.)  This would seem to be the response directed at the one issue the film never addresses, that is, the lack of female representation.  If anything, the lack of it makes the critical reflection all the sharper, the world of the 1950s being dominated by men in general.  The absence of female presence is telling, leaving the twelve men as the focus, all with ideas that (for the most part) are familiar with one another, if not shared by each other.
In short?
12 Angry Men loses some of its enjoyability only if one has no concept of our society’s history and current climate.  It was relevant in 1957, and it remains relevant today, in a culture not so far removed as we might think.  As we continue to progress, 12 Angry Men will stand forever as a landmark and a reminder, no less moving now than it was over sixty years ago.
Thanks so much for reading!  Remember the ask box is always open if you have any suggestions, questions, comments, or just want to say hi, and I hope to see you in the next article.
