Dear princess Twilight, I have a question regarding colour today. To be more precisely, the fur colour of ponies. Originally I just wondered your stand on the colour purple because it's the colour of your fur, but then I wondered. How do ponies usually react towards their own fur colours (especially regarding they had no choice in choosing it)? Is it more like your given name and you have a natural liking for it? Or are there cases where disliking and effect due to this take place?

First of all, a correction. Ponies don’t have fur, this is a recurring misconception, but pony coats are not thick enough to be considered fur.

In either case, I think most ponies like, or at least don’t mind, their coat color. Arguably it’s something you get accustomed to from an early age. After all, if you can get used to the smell of your own sweat, it shouldn’t be that hard to get used to a color, however drab it may be.

Of course, most ponies have something they don’t like about themselves, and coat color could be among those things, but as a rule I think it’s not an issue or even something you think about a lot.

I suspect other ponies think about how I’m purple more than I do. I get questions about it as well, as evidenced by this letter, but it’s not like I look in the mirror and think to myself “I am just really purple, that sure is a lot of lavender for one pony” or something along those lines.

Obviously I can’t speak for everypony else, and there hasn’t been any research into the relationship between coat color and chromatic preference that I’m aware of, so you’ll have to take it as just personal experience and speculation based upon that, but I suppose it’s some sort of answer.

You know, now that I think about it, I am really purple. It is a lot of lavender, but I think it looks good. It works well with the mane, nothing clashing oddly, nothing extreme, just a fairly uniform palette of blue and purple hues. Distinct, yet subtle.
