Never not thinking about how Buffy has to beg and plead for Angel to not let the sun kill him when the first was tormenting him with what he’s done and that fact that soul or no soul he still wants to hurt Buffy and he concludes the only way he won’t is to kill himself….. and the only reason he didn’t dust was the storm and he was fully gonna let her watch him die again because he couldn’t face what a worthless piece of shit and a monster even with the soul he really is (and then suddenly they’re back together even though Buffy said they couldn’t be together anymore like RIGHT before all this so essentially Angel threatens to kill himself and then suddenly he and Buffy are back together 🙃 i hate it here)

Riley was gonna let himself die rather than become even weaker than Buffy while she again begs for him to stop being a whiny attention seeking toddler and grow the fuck up and do what he needs to do so he won’t DIE (my words not hers obviously lol) and when that doesn’t work and she still doesn’t “pay enough attention to him or need him enough” in his eyes while she’s ya know being the slayer, raising her sister and taking care of her sick mother…. He cheats on her in a way that again threatens his own life and the lives of everyone he could easily kill in her life if he were to be turned and when THAT doesn’t work he threatens to leave forever unless she forgives him IMMEDIATELY

And Spike who is the only one to actually die after she again is pleading you don’t have to do this “no there’s still time you’ve done enough” because Spike knows Buffy doesn’t deserve “good enough” Buffy deserves everything, she deserves to be free of the hellmouth even though that means they can’t be together and he’ll die

Two man-children who threaten to kill themselves because they can’t handle what they’ve done or that they’re not as strong as they think they are and drag an overburdened and traumatized young woman they had no business even dating in the first place along for their self-destructive ride vs a man who literally already sacrificed everything he was to become someone she could love without guilt, sacrificing everything he fought to become, for her and her beloved world she loves so much and fights so hard to protect.

I don't ship Buffy Summers with Spike because I like Buffy. I ship them because I LOVE her. I love how they were not supposed to be, how they represent the parts of each other they fear the most but eventually they embrace.

For the first time, she has an equal partner, who is not intimidated by her strength or to be *only* her sidekick.

Buffy’s journey to understand she does love Spike is something unmatchable, she spent the last 3 seasons being afraid she can not love anymore, and then… her last 3 words on the show are “I love you, Spike”. It’s healing, it’s self care, it’s… I’M GOING TO BE INSANE BECAUSE OF THEM.

I think the issue with Riley is that he basically exists out of pettiness and spite on Whedon’s part. Whedon didn’t want Bangel or Spuffy, and in fact he didn’t want Buffy to have a vampire love interest at all. Therefore he tried SO hard to make Riley “normal” that his personality ended up being Not A Vampire, aka nonexistent.

Riley was definitely supposed to represent "Average Joe" i.e. what Buffy needed after Angel, and then the rug pull for Buffy/narrative conflict would be that he's not average at all cos he's super soldier. Where Riley goes wrong as a character is his underlying misogyny and deep inadequacy complex. Which I don't think Joss intended to write in, but which happened as an unconscious reflection of Whedon's own deep flaws. We know it's unconscious cos he gives Riley a "Xander knows best, silly Buffy should have loved him all along" send-off (even more infuriating that it's coming from Xander) when Riley had in fact cheated on her and been controlling af etc.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer questions

Favorite female character :

Willow ! She clearly have one of the best character developement. She's cute, witty, though, a VERY powerful wicca and she's fruity 👀. I always loved her cute personality but became obsessed when I watched season 4 !

Favorite male character :

Spike. He's just the best vampire EVER ! With or without a soul, he's funny, cute, sexy, nice. He has been iconic since the first episode he appeared on and i've been obsessed from this time on. He has a really great storyline and is clearly one of the best characters.

Favorite season :

Season 3 ! I watched an insane amount of times. It comforts me so much, i always like the "last year of high school season" it's always so nice. There's plenty of amazing episodes and the final is so great !

Favorite episode :

Three are battling to have this place : Doppelgangland, Tabula Rasa and Once More with feeling. I'm a Willow stan so I obviously really enjoy Doppelgangland, i know all the dialogues by heart and LOVE vampire Willow. Tabula Rasa is combinaison of really sad and really funny and I just think it's one of the best episodes. Once More with feeling is just too iconic to not be here ! I love the songs so bad !!!

Favorite member of cast :

Charisma Carpenter and Tom Lenk are just the cutest. They always interract with their fans I love it !! (Yes i've been noticed by Charisma and by Tom recently so i'm screaming)

Favorite ship :

Tillow and Spuffy are on a tie tbh. Tillow was my first favorite sapphic couple, they're just too cute together, I wish Tara is not dead because they deserve happiness together. Spuffy grew on me because of my moots. I'm totally #TeamSpike !! They make such a powerful couple together I wish we'd had more cute moments like in season 5 and 7.

A character I'd die defending :

Cordelia and Dawn. Cordelia is so misunderstood, she's hilarious and really wants to be loved more than anything. That's why I love her so much in ATS (before the season 4 disaster) because we get to see how kind she is and not just the dumb popular mean girl ! I don't get the hate Dawn gets. She's a teenager acting like a normal teenager like Buffy did sometimes back in the first seasons. She's so adorable and as strong as her sister or any Scooby and I'd like people to stop hating on her.

A character I can't sympathize with :

Riley. I'm sorry but Riley was boring and kinda misogynist. He didn't really care about Buffy that much and was playing the victim "yeah but i'm not as special as you" ughhh

A character I grew up to love :

Faith, thanks to ATS. She was just so annoying back in season 3 but got better when she came back. She was honestly better as a villain in season 3 than as an ally. Also Angel, he was way nicer in ATS than in BTVS.

My anti-OTP :

Aside from Biley where clearly neither of them truly loved the other, I would say Fuffy. I'm gonna get hit by fans but I find Fuffy toxic if they were a real couple. I see the sexual tension, I clearly do, but they wouldn't have made a great couple. Oh yeah and obviously Kennedy and Willow, they weren't made for each other.

Bluebell, Alabama wasn’t exactly the most friendly and welcoming place for a girl like Riley Lynn to grow up. No, she was the sort who really blossomed once she got to college, and found her niche in the steam and roasted coffee smell of Acuppella. Not to say that April was her very own, personal fairy godmother, but Riley would be hard-pressed to thank anyone else for her newly-found self confidence. The girls of Acuppella have been invaluable to Riley in discovering who she really is, and most importantly, the person she’d like to become.

To say that growing up in Bluebell was stifling would be a bit of an understatement, even though Riley really didn’t have much of an idea of who she was or what she wanted out of life. Her mother worked for a chemistry lab, while her father was a doctor, so her life was planned from the moment she was conceived: go to Harvard, become a doctor. Riley was never able to deliver on that front, and her grades were always average, something that her parents attributed to her being lazy. She excelled in sports from elementary school through college, and has always used athletics as an outlet. She played on her high school’s soccer, basketball, and track teams, and despite making a name for herself at Bluebell High, found herself to be a bit of a loner.

She was a junior in high school when she was diagnosed with dyslexia, which was the main reason why Riley suffered so badly in school. Even though she worked hard with tutors and in resource rooms, she couldn’t pull her grades up high enough to get into medical school like her parents wanted her to. As a last-ditch attempt to try and please her parents, Riley applied to NYU for Sports Medicine, and was so proud of herself when she actually got in. She found her freshman year of college to be rather lonely, and knew it was because she was afraid to trust people. When Riley was eleven years old, she’d been dropped off home from soccer practice by her mother. The coach and his son lived next door, and while Riley’s mother was working in the garden one day talking with her coach’s father, his son went inside for a glass of lemonade and ended up following the sound of the shower to Riley. The incident has left her very self-conscious, too trusting of others, and at times, withdrawn. The experience left Riley extremely wary of men, and to this day, she has not told her parents about the molestation, nor has she come out to them.

Riley’s sexuality wasn’t something that she even became aware of until she was a senior in high school and a new girl moved to Bluebell. Riley found herself infatuated, but ultimately never acted on her emotions. She’s never had a real girlfriend, and that’s something that’s plagued her because of her trust issues. She simply can’t let herself go enough and let someone else in that way. It’s somewhat embarrassing, and she can’t honestly say she’s ever been in love. At least, she couldn’t until Katie came along, and that was a mess more than she needed it to be.

Moving to New York City was initially something that Riley never thought she’d be able to do. She knew she’d never be able to be who she was back in Bluebell, so getting out of that small town was high on her list of priorities. Her parents are happy that she’s doing something involving medicine, even if they’re a little distant from her. Riley is perfectly well-adjusted at NYU. She enjoys living with her roommates, she loves being a part of April’s Showers, and she’s known to do a great rendition of Greased Lightning at April’s karaoke nights from time to time. She’s just trying to get by and make a name for herself in the big city.

I just started watching White Collar for the first time and a realization about most male written and directed media smacked me DIRECTLY in the face which is that SO MUCH media written by a for men is genuinely just male nerd self insert, non-canon compliant, AU fan fiction??????

Like them writing and creating stories is just “ok so these guys are soooo smooth and well dressed and women just flock to them at every turn and they can get away with anything and everyone believes and supports them when they do mess up and everyone thinks they’re sooooo brilliant”

This media isn’t just portraying women “for the male gaze” it’s EVERYTHING. Everything in these stories is supporting and uplifting mens’ delusions about who they are, how they’re perceived, and how they should expect to be treated. Which is incredibly ironic because anytime media portrays women or the world in the female gaze in a more “in my ideal world things would be like this” instead of portraying us as nothing but weak, broken, unloved, traumatized, victims OR one dimensional sex symbols with no needs or emotions they’re screaming, crying, throwing up about how stupid and unrealistic the story is….

This explains SO MUCH about how male characters are handled in shows like Veronica Mars and Buffy. Even though they’re shows staring women all the “good guys” get the delusional self insert, y/n, AU fan fic treatment (Buffy still wants Angel in season 3 and Riley in season 6 even after everything they did and Xander is CONSTANTLY forgiven for all the atrocious shit he says and does and is wanted by all women besides Buffy. Veronica forgiving Duncan and getting back together with him and even CONSIDERING Piz could truly only be born from men being delusional AS FUCK. Writing how they want men to be treated by women rather than being based in reality and the woman having even an ounce of self respect.)

Which is why the “bad boys”, Logan and Spike are such better characters. They’re so much more realistic, they get held accountable by the women in their lives, have better growth and are just way more appealing and attractive because they’re not the walking embodiment of what MEN want men to be treated and act like.

Also just realized this is why the Star Wars sequels were so hated. It wasn’t just Rey being powerful and loved by her found family and Kylo. It was that the movies showed the reality of men like Kylo. They destroyed the male fantasy Darth Vader created. They aren’t super cool, powerful badasses. They’re extremely sad, broken, temper tantrum throwing lost little boys who just want love and acceptance but have lost the ability to accept it because of the dark side (aka the patriarchy) which is the reality and that made me SOOOOO ANGRY lololololololol and this is why Joss Whedon THOUGHT making Spike into a sad pathetic mama’s boy of a poet would make the audience not like him because that DOES work on misogynistic men who enjoy the male gaze but does NOT work and only humanizes and makes Spike even more complex and lovable to the female gaze 💀💀💀💀 oh good lord

When I'm watching Buffy and Riley sex scenes, especially in "Where the Wild things Are" I literally say the same thing to the screen as I often say to the one year olds I teach at work "Eww," "No thank you that's gross," and "That's yucky, please stop."

Harmony Pearce, former roommate

Harmony and Riley became roommates through the penultimate good decision maker: Craigslist. The two got along swimmingly during Riley’s underclassman career at NYU, and she was extremely supportive of Harmony’s blossoming work as an actress. Things got a little too awkward for them after they began sleeping in the same bed for an extended period of time, and Riley found herself to be too distracted from her schoolwork because of how quickly she found herself falling for Harmony. After an evening where they actually slept together, Riley couldn’t deal with her feelings and ended up moving in with Spencer, Kitty, Jane, and Jackie.

joss's sick obsession with not just causing pain and suffering - but punishment and humiliation to his "pretty popular girl" archetype characters aka Buffy and Cordelia and his favoritism of the most horrible mediocre white men aka riley, xander, and angel is never more apparent than in Into the Woods

The writers opted not for the FANTASTIC call back to season 1 with owen and Never Kill a Boy on the First Date when Buffy says "two days in my world and owen really would get himself killed…. or I'd get him killed… or someone else...."

which set them up perfectly for the road map of Buffy's attempt at a "normal" relationship that angel, her mother, and the scoobies keep trying to push her to have (when she's not normal herself so of course it's gonna be a disaster which is soooooo trying to force a queer person to be straight coded which is why spuffy is inherently queer on top of them both being canonically bisexual because Buffy embracing her love of Spike is embracing her inherent queerness)

But could you IMAGINE how amazing it would have been for season 1 to have foreshadowed riley being turned at the suck house (because literally all that evil in Sunnydale and NO ONE takes the opportunity to turn the slayer's boyfriend into the perfect secret weapon to take her and her whole family out??? PLEASE)

Then vamp riley almost killing Dawn and her mother (because Dawn would be the one tricked into inviting him in as a call back to Dawn accidentally inviting Harmony in and Buffy saying she's gonna get us all killed plus angel tricking his little sister into inviting him in once he was turned)

Buffy is forced to kill him after pleading with him to remember he loves her or any part of who he was (which would further show how exceptional Spike's ability to form a truce with Buffy, keep it, and fall in love with her all without a soul is)

Making riley her second (third if we count ford being left for dead and then having to dust him) turned evil boyfriend she's forced to kill.

Buffy would still be DEVASTATED and it's Buffy so she'd still punish and blame herself even though it'd be all riley's fault (demonstrating how this storyline would still cause immense pain for Buffy and be very high stakes drama for the plot but again joss elected for humiliation having Buffy literally chase after the man who was cheating on her with vampires while she was dealing with a sick mother and a hell god after her sister. Favoring a white man's character over the best plot line)

All while also further setting up her and Spike's relationship because of the "if that's what I wanted I'd be dating Spike" of it all which was her basically saying if I didn't want normal, Spike would be who I'd choose and now she's tried to be normal and he got killed, almost killed her family and then she had to kill him just like season 1 Buffy knew would happen when she broke things off with owen!!

AND the poetic irony of her trying to be “normal” and it ends with the exact same result?? The lesson being that rejecting who you are is not the answer and the only true answer is self acceptance because pain will happen no matter what so might as well love and embrace yourself ???

BUT NOOOOOOO the writers aka joss opted for riley's narrative to be that he's a hero and a good guy always, no matter what because joss has a big fat crush on marc and guys like him, angel and oz all get written off by treating women like shit without being villainized for it at all and then leaving. Getting to go on to live rich and fulfilling lives while Kendra, Tara, Cordy, and Anya are all violently killed off with barely any time spent grieving their deaths by more than one character..... (I haven't ever been able to finish ats so I don't know how much this applies to cordy's but my guess is the pattern didn't change much)
