I think the ship discourse in Yellowjackets fandom would probably go calmer if more ppl realized that "you can ship whatever you want to ship" and "sometimes preferences/headcanons reflect prejudiced stereotypes that exist in real life" are two statements that can coexist.
While it's true that ppl can ship whatever they want and ship wars are pointless, we can't also dismiss all forms of critics about headcanons and preferences as simply "hate" or "envy" or "jealousy" and shut out important conversations bc they're not convenient to us.
Like, the issue w/ Taivan and Jackieshauna: the discussion about racial bias and anti-gender nonconforming bias in progressive spaces like sapphic fandoms is important, and some ppl misusing some concepts or losing their temper doesn't invalidate that.
Same w/ Lottienat: even if arguments like "they have more fics" are shallow, it doesn't erase the fact that some tropes, like "Lottie fixes Nat", reduce Lottie, a rare representation for Indigenous/Maori ppl and ppl w/ schizophrenia, to the role of fixing a white woman, reduce Nat to her addiction and reproduce harmful stereotypes about "bad girls", reinforce misconceptions about addiction (like it's something we can switch off just bc someone loves us), reinforce the same traditional gender roles that the show tries to deconstruct etc.
Fandoms are about fun, but also about community, and only by understanding that both "ship whatever you want" and "sometimes preferences/headcanons carry prejudices", we can make sure that everyone feels included and can be part of the fun.
PS.: I'm gonna tag the 'anti' tags so ppl who don't wanna see it can skip the discourse when they scroll (I actually ship Jackieshauna romantically tbh)

read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/OdYSQAi
by Orca478
The Rouges return to the compound, thinking that Tony needs them back. Steve certainly thinks that Tony needs him.
Turns out, the Rouges could not be more wrong.
They slowly find out that Tony does not need them, he has a family now, a big big family.
And they got some words (and maybe even some punches) to throw at the Rouges.
This story contains multiple scenarios of different people confronting the Rouges and their bullshit, as well as some fun between Tony' s family.

Neutralizing Dr. Bhakdi's attempt at rebuttal
Originale message: https://www.geertvandenbossche.org/post/response-to-dr-bhakdi
Dr. Bhakdi's response (marked in grey below): https://doctors4covidethics.org/rebuttal-to-geert-vanden-bossches-response-to-dr-bhakdi/
Rebuttal to Geert vanden Bossche’s “Response to Dr. Bhakdi”
Michael Palmer, MD and Sucharit Bhakdi, MD
doctors4covidethics.org
Some time ago, Dr. Bhakdi published a video presentation [1] which explained that cross-immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is widespread in the population, and that general vaccination is therefore not necessary or appropriate. This was disputed by Dr. Geert vanden Bossche [2]. Here, we rebut Dr. vanden Bossche’s assertions.
In the following, quotes from van den Bossche’s piece are typeset in italics, and our replies are printed in upright font shape.
I have inserted my comments underneath those of these medical doctors. As I am not sure about the role of Dr. Palmer here, I’ve addressed my comments to Dr. Bhakdi only. I have no interest in criticizing people who, like me and others, argue against mass vaccination. It is important, however, that we use the correct scientific justification as anything else will soon or later backfire and be used against us to invalidate our opposition against mass vaccination campaigns. That’s the only reason why I am spending time on countering the alleged rebuttal of these doctors. I’ll start with my summary:
I maintain that Bhakdi’s interpretation of protective population-level immunity is not built on sound scientific arguments. There is no evidence whatsoever that herd immunity, or what he now calls: ‘widespread protective immunity’, relies on cross-protective memory cells elicited by heterologous Coronavirus (CoV) strains (e.g., common cold CoVs). This probably explains why he’s continuously evading my critical comments on his false assumption that cross-immunity equals cross-protection and why his statements attempting to rebut my comments related to this issue are not backed by any relevant reference from the literature. Indeed, none of the allegedly protective mechanisms he’s alluding to are supported by any kind of evidence of acquired, cross-protective effector memory cells. As previously mentioned, if cross-immunity among different CoVs would be protective, we would not be witnessing fulminant outbreaks of the delta variant in several countries.  Bhakdi is simplifying the science down to the level of phantasy. He prefers to ignore some basic immunologic science in an attempt to simplify things and construe interpretations that he can understand himself without having to tap into the different mechanisms that underlie the population’s immune response to the virus. Most strikingly, Bhakdi completely ignores the broadly and universally protective capacity of innate B1 cell-derived oligospecific antibodies (Abs). I can only recommend him to do (a lot!) of literature on these innate, polyreactive Abs. I offer him to start his education on my website where I’ve gathered a number of relevant references from the literature on this very topic.
1. Cross-immunity to SARS-CoV-2 exists and is cross-protective
Dr. Bhakdi is confusing all along cross-reactivity (which basically means that antibodies (Abs) or T cells induced by one CoV can BIND similar [conserved] epitopes on some other CoVs) and cross-protection. None of the publications Dr. Bhakdi is referring to has analyzed or claims cross-PROTECTION elicited by other CoVs.
Cross-protection is supported by the available evidence:
A correlation between cross-protection and cross-reactive antibodies has been explicitly confirmed in several other studies [3–6].
It probably suffices to say that correlations are typically not implying a causal relationship
COVID-19 is more severe in younger children than in older children and adolescents [7]. This is consistent with greater protection of the latter by cross-immunity conferred by past infection with other coronaviruses.
Indeed, exceptional genetic deficiencies in innate immunity typically become clinically manifest in young children. As such deficiencies become manifest at an early stage in life, older children and adolescents who stayed healthy at this stage continue to be well protected by their innate Abs. This has nothing to do with cross-immunity, let alone with cross-protection.
The low disease severity and very low case fatality rates of COVID in the general population further support protection by cross-immunity.
When you take the population segment that is typically featured by poor functionality of their innate Abs (elderly, people with certain co-morbidities), disease severity and case fatality rates are relatively high whereas the opposite applies to the bulk of the population consisting of healthy people and younger age groups (< 65 years). Again, this observation has nothing to do with cross-immunity, let alone with cross-protection.
2. Neutralizing activity of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies
Again, Abs that bind to Sars-CoV-2 do not necessarily neutralize the virus and prevent it from entering the cell.
Apart from the fact that Dr. vanden Bossche erringly equates virus neutralization in laboratory experiments with protection from infection,
On the contrary (!): I am pointing out that cross-reactivity of Abs doesn’t even mean that these Abs can prevent viral entry, let alone they would provide protection!
his above statement applies to all viruses. Each natural virus infection will produce a multitude of clonal antibodies (“idiotypes”). At least some idiotypes will be non-neutralizing; however, other idiotypes typically will neutralize. Moreover, this is true regardless of whether these antibodies are cross-reactive or not. The argument is irrelevant.
Bhakdi doesn’t seem to understand that I am alluding to the affinity of Abs. Cross-reactivity to heterologous antigen (Ag) is based on low(er) affinity interactions of Abs towards immunodominant epitopes. He seems to be considering a natural Ab response a mixture of monoclonal Abs, some of which are neutralizing and some others that are non-neutralizing. This is, of course, an erroneous interpretation as the neutralizing effect of a humoral/ Ab response is determined by the OVERALL effect of the combination of ALL Abs together. Clearly, in case of variants, the overall effect resulting from all Ag-Ab interactions will be dominated by Abs that recognize immunodominant domains. It’s precisely because (CoV) variants, and even more so heterologous (CoV) strains, exhibit changes in immunodominant domains that they become less susceptible, or even not susceptible at all, to cross-reactive Ab immunity!
3. Not all respiratory coronavirus induce cross-reactive antibodies effectively
In addition, Sars-CoV-2-induced Abs were only found to cross-react with 2 out of the 4 common cold CoVs (i.e., only for beta coronavirus HKU1 and OC43) and the cross-reactivity was ‘much lower than that observed for the remaining CoV epitopes.’
This is correct. However, whether it comes from some or from all coronaviruses is immaterial to the existence of cross-immunity as such. The study by Nielsen et al. [8] unambiguously demonstrated cross-immunity in almost all test persons who had been infected with SARS-CoV-2.
How can Bhakdi be so sure that the majority of the population has been exposed to the ‘right’ coronaviruses (i.e., beta coronavirus HKU1 and OC43) rather than to the other common cold viruses? But regardless, researchers have only been demonstrating cross-reactivity of anti-CoV Abs without proving relevant functionality of these Abs. Once again, we’re back to the argument that cross-reactivity doesn’t equal cross-protection!
4. Those ghastly variants
Furthermore, his statement that people who have built immunity against CoV are automatically protected against all Sars-CoV-2 variants is not true either for exactly the same reasons (i.e., Abs that bind to variants do not necessarily neutralize them and could even be at risk of causing Ab-dependent enhancement of disease; ADE).
Dr. vanden Bossche contends that immunity to CoV rests on the presence of neutralizing antibodies that will fail their duty when variants arise. This assumption lacks a scientific basis. It is common knowledge that protection against severe respiratory viral disease derives primarily from cellular immunity.
Where is the evidence for the alleged ‘common knowledge’? And again: where is the immunology? There is no evidence whatsoever that naturally induced, cross-reactive T memory cells are broadly and universally capable of eliminating CoV-infected cells! They can, therefore, not provide population-level protection as Bhakdi tries to make people believe.
Reactive lymphocytes limit viral multiplication at sites of infection.
Limitation of viral multiplication is not sufficient to protect from disease, let alone infection. It could at most mitigate disease, but even bystander T cells could do so! (this is why studies have shown that even immunization with BCG can have a beneficial effect). This is thought to be due to Tc-mediated secretion of immune inflammatory molecules (e.g., cytokines). There is increasing evidence, though, that Sars-CoV-2 is now also developing resistance against a number of these innate immune mediators (see articles on my website).
Antibodies merely play supportive roles in preventing viral spread in the bloodstream.
Where is the evidence for this statement? Is Bhakdi serious in stating that Abs (in general!) have no role to play in fighting the infection at the portal of entry or respiratory tract?
“Variants” (mutant strains) will arise due to “antigenic drift” with any RNA virus that propagates within the human population, and SARS-CoV-2 is no exception. Antigenic drift occurs in minuscule steps and, as is well known, the genetic and antigenic differences between the original (Wuhan) strain of SARS-CoV-2 and any of its variants are vanishingly small relative to the difference between any SARS-CoV-2 strain and the respiratory coronavirus that confer cross-immunity. That such minuscule changes should substantially affect immunity and even promote ADE is not credible.
It seems like Bhakdi missed my point as I stated that Abs that bind with low affinity to Sars-CoV-2 (e.g., such induced by his cross-reactive CoVs) might be suspicious of inducing ADE, precisely because of their weak binding.
Cross-reactive T-cell immunity, which is a pillar of immunological competence against respiratory viruses, has been documented with respect to SARS-CoV-2 since 2020 [9,10]. Antibody response and T cell response are correlated; thus, fixating on the properties of antibody idiotypes only when trying to gauge overall immunity misses the mark.
The mark Bhakdi is continuously missing is that he doesn’t understand that even cross-reactive T cell immunity does not imply cross-PROTECTION!
5. Are the asymptomatically infected doomed?
Vanden Bossche insists that the study by Nielsen et al. [8] “does not truly provide information on asymptomatically infected individuals” but that the people referred to in the study must instead have had mild symptoms, and further that “asymptomatically infected individuals do not develop long-lived or mature anti-S [anti-spike] Abs and have not been reported to develop memory B cells or CYTOTOXIC memory T cells. Consequently, previously asymptomatically infected people (i.e., the majority of the population) cannot rely on ACQUIRED immunity for protection against infection or disease.”
Unlike vanden Bossche, we are not concerned about the difference between mild symptoms and none at all; quite obviously, both groups of patients were protected from severe disease. More interesting than this quibble is his parenthetical assertion that the majority of the population has already been “asymptomatically infected” with COVID.
This is anything but quibble. Qualifying this as ‘quibble’ merely illustrates that Bhakdi doesn’t understand the immune pathogenesis of Sars-CoV-2 infection. From an immunological viewpoint, asymptomatic infection and the immune effector cells involved are completely different from those coming to play in case of symptomatic infection. The immunology here is very different but Bhakdi doesn’t care as he’s exclusively focused on the common clinical denominator, i.e., protection against severe disease. So, my previous comment related to understanding the immunology that underlies asymptomatic infection, not to gauging clinical symptoms.
He further assumes that such individuals do not develop any immunological memory. Several questions then arise:
1. How was it established that the majority of the population had already experienced asymptomatic infection? Positive PCR tests alone cannot be accepted as proof of this assertion.
Does Bhakdi really think that after the virus circulated in the population for over 1.5 years (including several highly infectious variants), the majority of people who didn’t develop symptoms simply didn’t get exposed to the virus yet?
2. If any individuals were indeed asymptomatically infected, then what, if not cross-immunity, prevented their infection from becoming clinically manifest?
My answer: Innate, polyreactive Abs capable of recognizing CoV-derived patterns that are shared among all CoVs (presumably even including some other viruses). See reference from the lit. on my website.
3. If these individuals were protected from manifest disease during their first infection, why should we assume that they will fare any worse when infected again? We hope that vanden Bossche will resist the temptation to trot out the fearsome Delta variant in response.
That is exactly the question Bhakdi ought to be asking himself. If folks got acquired immunity thanks to previous exposure to heterologous CoVs, why would they all of a sudden become sick whereas they were well protected during previous waves of this pandemic? He doesn’t seem to have the answer. I have explained on multiple occasions how high infectious pressure can temporarily suppress innate immune defense in previously asymptomatically protected people. My website is full of explanations on how this works and how this renders previously protected people (e.g., younger age groups) susceptible to C-19 disease. More can be found in the articles I published on TrialSiteNews. Sometimes it’s good to read what other people write before attempting to rebut their arguments.
6. Of people and of test tubes
In the Danish study [Nielsen et al.] at least nine individuals were unable to fully neutralize viral infection
Neutralization is a function of antibodies or serum samples, not of individuals.
Well, if one considers that full-fledged neutralizing Abs were not found in a number of individuals and if those happened to be the people who were truly asymptomatic, then this becomes highly relevant in that it would clearly prove that protection in asymptomatically infected people does not rely on neutralizing Abs
Clinical immunity may exist even without neutralizing antibodies.
Precisely! The bulk of clinical immunity is provided by innate Abs.
Moreover, neutralization was determined using a recombinant pseudo-virus that expressed the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, but none of the other SARS-CoV-2 proteins. It cannot simply be assumed that none of these could contribute to neutralization.
Where is Bhakdi’s evidence supporting that Abs to proteins other than spike protein have virus-neutralizing capacity?
In addition, it is stated in the discussion [again Nielsen et al.] that ‘some rare individuals have no detectable immunological memory to Sars-CoV-2.’
These “rare individuals” were most likely those with low cross-immunity and false-positive PCR tests. The fact that a lack of immunological memory is rare supports rather than contradicts the prevalence of cross-immunity.
How would that work? It is much more plausible that the lack of immunological memory pertains to those who were truly asymptomatically infected as there is no evidence whatsoever that asymptomatic infection induces B cell memory.
To my knowledge, there is no evidence that Sars-CoV-2-induced CD8+ T cells provide cross-protection from common cold viruses or vice versa and this wasn’t even part of this investigation.
Cross-protection from common cold viruses by immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is not the point. We are only discussing cross-immunity in the opposite direction, which has indeed been detected [9,10] and most likely contributes to the clinically manifest cross-protection.
Bhakdi obviously missed the words ‘or vice versa’. Again: cross-immunity does not mean cross-protection!
7. On herd immunity
So, with all my respect for Dr. Bhakdi, the conclusion that herd immunity would already be established and would simply need to be recalled upon exposure to SARS-CoV-2 is not correct. By the way, if this were true, we would not currently be witnessing a fulminant propagation of the delta variant in several countries.
Herd immunity in the strict sense—namely, a high prevalence of sterilizing immunity that prevents a virus from effectively propagating within the population—is problematic with any respiratory virus.
Bhakdi should revisit the definition of herd immunity as herd immunity does not relate to a high prevalence of ‘sterilizing’ immunity. Herd immunity primarily relates to the immune capacity of the population to dramatically reduce viral transmission.
Dr. Bhakdi was using the term loosely, referring widespread immunity that is sufficient to protect from severe disease.
Herd immunity has NOTHING to do with protection from disease. I am not even arguing about Bhakdi’s definition of herd immunity versus “widespread protective immunity” (WPI) but rather about his false hypothesis that this WPI would rely on previous exposure to other CoVs. That is completely wrong, at least as far as durable protection is concerned!
The pervasiveness of such immunological protection is indeed apparent from the very low rates of fatality or severe disease in the general population, and particularly among those without co-morbidities. However, we agree with vanden Bossche that it would have been better to use the term “widespread protective immunity” rather than “herd immunity” in this case.
8. Summary
With the exception of the above single point of terminology, we see no merit in Dr. vanden Bossche’s response. We maintain that Dr. Bhakdi’s interpretation of the studies he highlighted in his video presentation are fully supported by the available scientific literature.

Love Interests of the MCU
Bout to write some criticism of the MCU, if you don’t like, don’t read? Or do, I’m a poster not a cop. Click to read more, if you’re interested. Also, spoilers.
A problem in the MCU, to be honest. We’ll get into this here and you’ll see what I mean.
Jane Foster, MCU: An airhead, breathy absent-minded professor astrophysicist. Ok, cool, a STEAM lady.... who is constantly a damsel in distress in both movies and really adds nothing to Thor’s mythos or character. In fact, Erik Selvig is a more important character being set up in Thor to be a pawn of Loki’s for Avengers. Darcy Lewis is a more interesting character AND SHE’S SIDE CHARACTER AS WELL. (For those following MCU: SHE IS IN WANDAVISION for crying out loud)
And both Selvig and Darcy have less screen time than Jane. I don’t blame the actress, because I think Natalie Portman is very talented. But that role can only give you so much to work with when your entire personality is ‘I’m an astrophysicist and absent-minded professor trope.’ That’s it? That’s all Jane Foster is? ‘Cause that’s all I ever got from her.
Seriously you’re going to waste Natalie Portman on such a shallow role?
VS
Comics Jane Foster: A well-trained EMT (Or Nurse, but still) who immediately runs toward danger to help people, is a damsel out of distress trope, doesn’t take crap from men, is a fan of cricket, regularly also fought with Thor’s enemies (as in comics Thor was not originally god-Thor but Donald Blake, who was worthy enough to use Thor’s hammer). Was not afraid to sass or stand up to heroes (or villains!) who harassed her after she found out Thor’s identity. Hmmm...
Christine Palmer, MCU: A surgeon at the same place Strange works at! Who likes him, because they work together! Totally not afraid to stand up to him even though lots of people already call him out on his arrogance and egomania. Dated in the past but somehow together again, and has no personality beyond ‘surgeon’ and ‘ex-girlfriend who gives speech to remind ex that life is about [insert moral here]’
WOW. SO INTERESTING. I TOTALLY REMEMBERED THAT SHE EXISTED
Also what a waste of Rachel McAdams talents. I mean she got THIRD BILLING AND SHE’S BARELY IN THE FUCKING MOVIE.
VS
Clea, Comics: Princess of the Dark Dimension and Niece of Dormammu and ALSO DR. STRANGE’S IN-COMICS WIFE. She’s so well known as his love interest that at first I thought that’s what they were going to go for in his movie, esp with Rachel McAdams as the Third Billed ACTOR. But yeah, Clea, traditional love interest, super magically potent, likes earth, hates her evil uncle, just wants to learn more magic and live with Strange.
BUT NO HOW COULD WE POSSIBLY HAVE A FEMALE CHARACTER WITH ACTUAL POWERS. IT TAKES US UNTIL FUCKING AGE OF ULTRON TO GET WANDA, THOR 3 TO GET VALKYRIE AND YEARS (FUCKING YEARS) TO GET CAPTAIN MARVEL
Not that the others did not take years, but Carol only showed up RIGHT around the time Christianized Wonder Woman showed up in Snyderverse...
Clea’s comics personality isn’t that different from any of these other characters, but honestly, the MCU could’ve done a lot with her and used a character far more well connected to Strange in his own fucking movie.
Nakia: Again, an ex-girlfriend who used to work for T’Challa but couldn’t due to [insert morality speech here] and now, suddenly, they are back together! Because T’Challa is doing things! Wonder what comics Nakia is like...
OH YIKES OK MOVIE IMPROVED HER, THEY IMPROVED HER SO MUCH. (Comics Nakia: 16 year old obsessive/possessive supervillain and yeeeeaaah that’s just....No. Big ol’ NOPE). Still I forget she exists. Tbh I’d forget Okoye exists either if she wasn’t HAVING MORE SCREEN TIME THAN THE LOVE INTEREST.
I’m starting to notice a trend here...
VS
Monica Lynne, Comics: A more major love interest for Black Panther and more tied to his mythos. Arguably his most used Love Interest that isn’t Storm who is legally not allowed to be in the MCU anyway so she is unavailable for BP, which is a fucking shame. Personality wise, not much different, but Lynne isn’t as tied to Wakanda as any of the others.
Honestly I don’t know all that much about Black Panther so if anyone else does and wants to weigh in on a better love interest choice (THAT IS NOT STORM), please tag me.
Further, though, Monica could have given a deeper view into the complex experience of being a successful black woman in America to contrast with Erik’s storyline and have T’Challa hear more than just one singular experience.
But that’s just a hot take on my part.
Pepper Potts:
There’s no VS here because Virginia “Pepper” Potts is arguably the absolute closest MCU came to matching up with her comics counterpart. Fiery, intelligent, doesn’t take Tony’s shit and calls him on it, doesn’t take anyone’s shit toward her. She’s a bit more tame in the MCU and wildly OOC in Iron Man 3 so I don’t count that movie as canon, but honest to god, there’s nothing bad to say here about her character adaptation. A good job was done.
Hope Van Dyne: Again, a very good adaptation; most likely taking different characters together so because her comics counterparts are two separate entities, Hope has to be judged solely on her movie version. Her and Scott have good chemistry, she’s a good character in her own right. Only suffers from the trope of ‘Defrosting Ice Queen’ which you can tell because her hair and makeup get less severe as she ‘defrosts’
Better in the first movie than the second, where even though HER NAME WAS IN THE TITLE AS ‘THE WASP’ she was barely in it and sidelined by all the villains and side characters. For those interested, theories believe she is pulled from Nadia Pym (616 verse) and Hope Pym (982 verse)
Sif: Thor’s other in-comics and in-myth love interest/sometimes wife, absolutely side-lined, never given more than a few lines in any movie and despite having a supposedly epic backstory, we never see it. No one questions what the FUCK happened to Sif in Thor 3 because she has mysteriously vanished with Thor giving 0 fucks about where his remaining childhood friend went since she is the only one NOT KILLED OFF UNCEREMONIOUSLY (A different rant for a different problem)
So what’s there to say but why even include her as part of a love triangle if her absence is so unnotable that no one cares what happens to her
Gamora: Again, I’m not as familiar with her character, but like Pepper she seems to be a good adaptation, if made less of an anti-hero/villain in the MCU and given a bit of a softer side. Her romance with Star-Lord/Peter Quill is weak, however. Might be because of the actors but I don’t really see it? She has more emotional moments with her sister than ANYONE ELSE (Up until Infinity War with Quill and Thanos meeting)
The main problem we are running into, however, is look at this list. Look at how many female characters who are the love interest are demoted to be SOLELY THAT ROLE.
Please discern the difference for me, IN PERSONALITY between Christine Palmer and Jane Foster. Because aside from their professions, I don’t see any, do you? The fact that a good chunk of female characters in the MCU are the Love Interest and solely the love interest is....bad
It’s bad. It’s poor writing and it has consistently been done to more female characters than male. I just don’t see why the writers can’t do this basic thing.
1. Create/Adapt Character A as a full, three dimensional character
2. Create/Adapt Character B as a full, three dimensional character
3. Put A and B together romantically if they click
DONE. SIMPLE. EASY.
Also
4. Do not erase character personalities but remember what made them a good romantic pairing in the first place.

“The Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has been extraordinarily friendly turf for corporations. It has been more than four years since the Court has reversed a lower court decision favoring corporate interests, according to a new analysis by the Constitutional Accountability Center, a progressive think tank.
Now, with the clock ticking for Senate Republicans to confirm President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, federal judge Amy Coney Barrett, the groups that helped push through Trump’s two previous nominees are again ready to spend tens of millions of dollars on advertisements to ensure Barrett receives the lifetime appointment.
With 53 Senate Republicans in this soon-to-end 116th Congress, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs to prevent no more than three defections to confirm Barrett with a simple majority. Two Republicans have publicly expressed disapproval of confirming Trump’s nominee so close to the election, Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, though it is not clear they have unequivocally committed to voting against Barrett—and the developing coronavirus outbreak among Republican senators is changing the vote count and confirmation timeline.
The conservative groups spending millions on television, digital, and direct mail ads hope to shore up GOP support for a nominee who is expected to be anti-abortion, socially conservative, and favorable to corporate interests.
All signs indicate that a potential Justice Barrett would continue the pro-corporate tilt of the Court. According to an analysis by the nonpartisan watchdog group Accountable.us, Judge Barrett sided with corporations over people 76% of the time on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, in 44 of 55 cases reviewed. For example, in the 2018 case of Bruce Betzner and Barbara Betzner v. The Boeing Company, Barrett voted to reverse a district court’s decision to send a personal injury lawsuit back to state courts, the outcome Boeing was seeking. In August, Barrett delivered a ruling that could block gig workers from suing when tech companies deny them overtime pay, according to a report from The Daily Poster.
The Roberts court has been stuffing its docket with cases in which lower courts ruled against corporate interests—fully 91% in the 2018-2019 term. Already on the docket for the term that starts on Oct. 5 are a number of cases that involve state rulings: Ford Motor Co. v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court, which could limit where individuals can pursue personal injury suits; Rutledge v. Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, on whether states can regulate pharmacy benefit managers; and Carney v. Adams, on whether states can require judges to be affiliated with one of the two major political parties. Other cases to be heard by the Supreme Court will feature deceptive commercial activities, arbitration agreements that limit peoples’ ability to sue corporations, and even the enforcement of IRS reporting requirements.
FOLLOW THE MONEY
Many of the top funders of groups backing Barrett, including many Republican megadonors, are billionaire corporate executives—in industries like manufacturing, transportation, shipping supplies, and private equity financing—whose economic outlooks could benefit from Barrett being confirmed to the vacant seat.
Here are the top donors to conservative groups spending on the Barrett confirmation, according to FEC data from Jan. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2020:
Club For Growth
The right-wing Club For Growth, known for backing far-right candidates against moderate Republican incumbents and a past recipient of funding from the Koch-linked Center to Protect Patient Rights, recently pledged to spend $5 million on ads to back Trump’s nominee. The group’s nonprofit arm received nearly $6.8 million from undisclosed donors from July 2017 through July 2018, according to tax documents. Its super PAC, Club For Growth Action, has reported receiving nearly $56 million in the 2020 election cycle, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
Club For Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement praising Barrett, “This choice will shape America’s future, as the Court considers cases relating to issues like the constant unconstitutional growth of government and whether federal agencies should have free rein to enact arbitrary rules without Congressional approval.”
Club For Growth has had huge support this year from Republican megadonor Richard Uihlein, the right-wing founder of shipping supplies company Uline, whose donations total $26.5 million this election cycle. Uihlein contributed $10 million to Club For Growth Action, the group’s super PAC, on Jan. 12, then $4 million on April 21 and another $10 million on August 8, according to FEC records.
Right-wing billionaire Jeff Yass, co-founder of financial firm Susquehanna International Group, donated over $17.5 million to the super PAC this cycle. Yass, a Pennsylvania-based options trader, has also contributed over $4 million to the conservative Protect Freedom PAC this cycle, making up the vast majority of its funding as reported in FEC records.
Also in this cycle, Club For Growth Action received over $2.1 million from the late Republican megadonor Richard Gilder, who died in May of congestive heart failure at the age of 87, and his ex-wife Virginia James. James has donated to the conservative Wisconsin state judge David Prosser in a 2011 recount battle and other Koch-related causes.
Richard and Barbary Gaby contributed over $1.6 million to Club For Growth Action. Barbara Gaby is the youngest child of Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel, who, with the DeVos family, has been a major funder of the the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a nonprofit that helps Republican legislators collaborate with corporate lobbyists, and the Center for International Private Enterprise, a non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
America First Action
The pro-Trump super PAC America First Action is also promising ad buys totaling $5 million to promote Barrett in national television, digital and direct mail. Its nonprofit arm, America First Policies, took in $22 million in 2017 from donors whose identities it was not required to publicly disclose, while the PAC has received nearly $83 million this cycle, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
The leading donors to the Trump super PAC, at $10 million apiece, have been Republican megadonor Timothy Mellon, the majority owner of transportation holding company Pan Am Systems, and Kelcy Warren, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of pipeline company Energy Transfer Partners whose Dakota Access pipeline has been mired in court battles over its potential to pollute key water sources in South Dakota.
Geoffrey Palmer, a Republican donor and billionaire real estate developer based in Los Angeles, has donated $6 million to America First Action. Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein threw in over $2.7 million. Three more familiar Trump megadonors have chipped in: Linda McMahon, the former pro wrestling executive who is now the super PAC’s chairwoman, with over $3.5 million; Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman, with $3 million; and Diane Hendricks of Wisconsin, chair of a roofing supply company and a Republican megadonor, with $2 million.
Richard DeVos, co-founder of Amway and husband of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, has contributed $400,000 to America First Action. GOP megadonor Marlene Ricketts, wife of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, has given half a million dollars to the PAC.
Americans For Prosperity
Through a standalone website and by mobilizing its membership, the Koch brothers-founded libertarian advocacy group says it has sent 200,000 letters in support of Barrett to U.S. senators in the past week. The group’s super PAC has spent over $20 million this cycle in independent expenditures.
The majority of that amount has come from $7 million from Charles Koch’s fossil fuel conglomerate Koch Industries and close to $6.5 million from the Koch network’s Freedom Partners Action Fund, but several more corporate megadonors have given to Americans For Prosperity Action this cycle. Major GOP donor Ron Cameron, president of the Little Rock, Arkansas-based Mountaire Corporation, a chicken products producer, has contributed $3.5 million. Richard “Dick” Haworth, the former CEO of an eponymous office-interiors manufacturer company, and his wife Ethelyn contributed $1.5 million to AFP Action. Haworth attended an exclusive Vail, Colorado retreat convened by the Koch Brothers for donors who had given over $1 million to right-wing causes. Trucking executive Clarence L. Werner, a previous million-dollar donor to the Kochs’ Freedom Partners super PAC, kicked in $1.5 million on July 1. Individuals from several energy, timber, pipeline, and coal companies have given at least $100,000 each to the PAC.
Judicial Crisis Network
The Judicial Crisis Network’s leading role in the communications push to confirm Trump’s nominees has been funded recently through some $30 million received between July 2018 and June 2019, led by a $15.9 million donation from an anonymous donor, according to IRS records reviewed by the Daily Poster. JCN is organized as a “social welfare” nonprofit and is not required to disclose the identities of its donors.
In 2017, a secret donor behind a $17 million gift readied JCN for the Kavanaugh confirmation showdown, providing over three-fourths of the total amount it received that year. Together in the efforts to confirm Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch in 2017, JCN was estimated to have laid out $22 million.
Three additional groups on the right have said they’ll be spending money on efforts to confirm Barrett: anti-abortion nonprofit Susan B. Anthony List, conservative nonprofit Catholic Vote, and conservative, anti-LGBT nonprofit think tank American Principles Project. The Susan B. Anthony list has reported raising a bit over $1 million to its PAC this cycle from hundreds of donors giving $5,000 and below, while its non-profit arm received over $12 million in funding according to its most recent Form 990, for 2018.
Millions More Spent on State Judicial Races
While the Supreme Court hears cases involving lower courts’ rulings on consumer lawsuits and government regulations, the conservative groups pushing Trump’s nominees have also spent millions to influence state judicial races.
A December 2019 report by the nonpartisan policy institute Brennan Center for Justice, titled “The Politics of Judicial Elections, 2017–18,” noted that JCN quietly spent $3.8 million on state elections in those years. After JCN donated nearly $1 million last year to the Republican State Leadership Committee, a national 527 group dedicated to electing Republicans to state office, the RSLC transferred $1.2 million to the Judicial Fairness Initiative, which works as an effort under the RSLC to elect conservative state judges. In the 2018 election cycle, the Judicial Fairness Initiative received over $4.3 million from RSLC, according to IRS records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Brennan Center tracked how in 2013-14, JCN sent half a million dollars to Wisconsin Club for Growth, which spent money that cycle for the successful reelection campaign of conservative Justice Patience Roggensack. In May, during oral arguments in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court regarding a stay-at-home order issued by the state health department, Justice Roggensack appeared to downplay the importance of some cases by contrasting the workers at a meatpacking plant who had been exposed to a coronavirus outbreak with “the regular folks in Brown County.” She then joined the majority on the state Supreme Court in a 4-3 decision to strike down the order, which was supported by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.
The Judicial Ads Act, introduced in the Senate on July 2 by Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), would bring transparency to secretive groups like those that blasted out ads promoting Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The bill would require any group spending at least $50,000 in a year on federal judicial nomination advertisements to disclose the identity of any donor giving $5,000 or more. Recently introduced in a House version as well by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), the measure is supported by the nonpartisan watchdog Campaign Legal Center. It could be taken up by Congress next year—most likely, if Democrats take control of the Senate—as part of the next version of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a sweeping ethics package passed by the Democratic House in March 2019 that is not supported by any Republicans in Congress.”

Dire Straits: On The Night DVD (2004)
Dire Straits: On The Night DVD (2004) - http://metalindex.hu/2021/01/26/dire-straits-on-the-night-dvd-2004/ -
Így került a minap a kezembe a Dire Straits “On The Night” DVD-je.
In Arms”-nak (1985) felejthetetlen slágerei (Money For Nothing, Walk Of Life, Brothers In Arms) is szerepelnek rajta.
Az “On The Night” eredetileg a Dire Straits második koncertalbumaként jelent meg 1993-ban a Vertigo/Warner Bros. gondozásában. A fölvételeket két helyszínen készítették: a Les Arènes nevű római amfiteátrumban a franciaországi Nîmes-ben és a Feijenoord stadionjában a németalföldi (régen: hollandiai) Rotterdamban. A két “hangverseny” egy 216 állomásos, közel két évig tartó, több mint 7 millió nézőt vonzó koncertkörút részét képezte, mely az együttes hattyúdalának bizonyuló “On Every Street” (1991) című albumot (is) volt hivatott népszerűsíteni. Az eredeti CD-hez képest a 2004-ben kiadott DVD-n hárommal több szám kapott helyet (The Bug, Solid Rock, Local Hero – Wild Theme).
A koncert első felében elsősorban a gyorsabb, dögösebb számok kaptak főszerepet, majd egy rövid megszakítással (Money For Nothing) a lassabb, meditatívabb jellegű szerzemények következnek, amit a “Solid Rock – Local Hero” kettős tényleg egyfajta “nonesszenciális” bónuszként követ. Jó hallgatni a stúdiólemezen kicsit uncsi “Calling Elvis” alaposan (még latinos perkusszió-betéttel is) földúsított változatát, a “Heavy Fuel” ZZ Topos, sőt elemeiben Robert Palmer “Addicted To Love”-jára emlékeztető groove-ját, a “Private Investigations” és a “Brothers In Arms” pedig egyenesen libabőr. Azt sajnos nem tudom, hogy az 1993-as turnén rendre elhangzó “Sultans Of Swing”, “Telegraph Road” és “Two Young Lovers” miért maradtak le a fölvételről. A bejegyzés végén beágyazott Nîmes-ben készült teljes, több mint két órás videón ezek is hallhatók.
A hangzás, a színpadkép, a szakadó eső ellenére (Rotterdam) önfeledten bulizó hatalmas tömeg, a szaxofonossal, két ütőssel, két billentyűssel, három gitárossal kiálló banda teljesen rendben van.
