I know that had Princess Elise existed in Archie Sonic, especially if it’s in the Preboot Era, the writers would’ve found ways to warp Elise into a bitchy love rival for Sonic, turn her into a gross fangirl/generic girlboss who is absolutely unlikeable or even villianize her 🫠
Which I wouldn’t put it behind the writers to do so like what they did with the game female characters like Amy by downplaying her crush and sidelining her, Rouge being villainized, Cream being sidelined and Blaze is whole other matter altogether. (I’m not to sure if Wave or Tikal were subjected the same way but it’s not a stretch to think about that as well)
I would be forever thankful that Preboot Archie writers didn’t adapt 06 because I know they’ve would made it much worse than the game already is (esp K*n P*nd*rs)

ok but legit a meetup of all the universe sonics would be hellish. they'd immediately start racing and fighting each other. they'd tackle boom to find out how he got so tall. adventures would be painting the wall to look like a tunnel and making scourge run into it. everyone would be trying to kill underground. modern idw and prime being the same universe is vague and debated so modern just keeps intermediately splitting into three like shadow clone jutsu. X keeps sitting on people's heads. preboot archie is crying about his dead son or whatever. zonic is standing on the wall. blaze the cat is there. hell on earth

Being a Sonic fan and meeting new Sonic fans sometimes feels like a nightmare blunt rotation, where every new fan you meet has a new randomized vendetta against one and sometimes more than one aspect of Sonic as if it took their wife and destroyed their crops.
This Sonic fan seems nice! Oh no they hate all western continuities and content and think fan content based on Fleetway, Archie (especially preboot Archie), SATAM, etc, is "wasted space". Well this guy over here seems super nice! Oh no they despise anything that isn't one of the classic games and think Sonic peaked in the mid 90's and never again. Maybe they think Mania is pretty good. How about this person? Nope, they think Frontiers ruined Sonic's good streak by allowing the story to take itself seriously. They love the 2010s games and think their writing was as good as Sonic should ever get. Do I even have to say it? Yeah this dude is an early Archie Sonic stan who thinks Ken Penders and Karl Bollers did the best with Sonic ever and all their issues are exaggerated.
And the list just goes on. But you know what, I love pretty much every era, game, and continuity of Sonic at least a little bit. I love all of them with no need for "ironic enjoyment" at all. No one can convince me that the majority of Sonic isn't really fun and good, I dare them to try.

Abridged Archie Sonic Reading List
For anyone interested in reading preboot archie sonic without Reading preboot archie sonic. i understand its ok.
Important but boring/bad issues are summarized in small text. If I’m missing any information/anything is incorrect please let me know!
NOTE: This list is my own opinion of what is interesting or important. I try to be objective, but nobody’s perfect. The purpose of this list is not to cut out all unsavory content; I do it where I can, but some unpleasant events are too important to summarize or take up like two panels in the middle of a good issue. It’s an old comic and sometimes things are handled poorly, so be aware of that as well; even Flynn’s run isn’t devoid of criticism. Inevitably, there will be characters and events referenced that you don’t know about if you don’t read the entire comic, but hopefully this should cover your bases well enough to enjoy the comic anyways.
KNUCKLES LORE EXPOSITION SPEEDRUN: Echidnas were the most developed society on Mobius. Their population was generally split into two groups; the citizens of Echidnaopolis on Angel Island, and those in Albion, near Mercia. Knuckles is under the impression that he is the last echidna; his father, Locke, isolated him from the rest of the population and trained him in the ways of the Guardian before “Answering the calling of [their] forebears!” and disappearing into a wall of energy in the Forbidden Zone, leading Knuckles to believe he had died.
Angel Island was raised into the air using the power of the Chaos Emeralds (and with the quiet help of the fire ants) in order to protect its inhabitants from an incoming comet. Centuries later, 400 years before the story takes place, two scientist brothers, named Dimitri and Edmund, built a Chaos Siphon that would absorb the power of the emeralds and return the island to Mobius.
However, after being rejected by the council, Dimitri attempted to use the siphon anyways, but it backfired, causing HIM to absorb the chaos energy and transforming him into Enerjak, a chaos demigod with the power to do anything the wielder can imagine.
After his defeat and (apparent) death, the echidnas swore off all technology, and Edmund appointed himself guardian of the last remaining emerald, starting the line of guardians that Knuckles is a part of, known as the Brotherhood of Haven. Dimitri’s son founded the Dark Legion, which opposed Echidnaopolis’s rejection of technology. Dimitri continued to lead the Dark Legion with heavy cybernetics, eventually being reduced to just a head.
Due to impending war with the Dingoes, Echnidaopolis was transported to its own pocket dimension, and the Dingoes to another. However, when both cities were suddenly brought back into the Prime Zone, they overlapped, causing the conflict to resurface. This return to the Prime Zone is how Knuckles learns he is not the last Echidna.
Colonists from Albion living in Downunda used Tasmanian Devils as test subjects in horrific experiments to create Tasmanian Devil dogs. The scientists responsible were arrested and imprisoned, but the Tasmanian Devil population never recovered.
Dr. Finitivus is a villainous mad scientist from Albion.
Julie-su is Knuckles’ fated soulmate (Echidnas have fated soulmates through a process called Soultouch). She is an orphan who was raised in the Dark Legion, but left to join Knuckles and the Chaotix.
Archimedes is a fire ant and a friend and mentor of Locke, who now fills that same role with Knuckles.

Elias was planning on using the Ring’s wish to cure Queen Alicia, but Amy (unknowingly) beat him to it. Amy now has her modern appearance.
NOTE: Starting here, every issue has a Knuckles story at the end (excluding #081-084) until further notice. These stories are not recommended reading.
Sonic #081-082, Sonic Super Special #13, Sonic #083-084 – Loose retelling of Sonic Adventure. The Hidden City of the Ancients is the city Sonic Adventure takes place in.
Sonic #085: Home & Back – After Robotnik’s initial defeat, the walruses of the North Sea were freed from mind control, allowing Rotor to happily live with his family again. However, upon Robotnik’s return, the walruses were seized by mind control once more, hellbent on killing Rotor. He barely escapes, but nearly drowns. He is rescued by the Arctic Freedom Fighters.
Sonic #086 & 087: Heart of the Hedgehog
Sonic #086 & 087: Against the Haunted Past – Monkey Khan’s backstory where he was kidnapped from his village by Robotnik and made into a cyborg. In modern times, Khan is kidnapped again as Robotnik attempts to remove his free will. Khan escapes, but not before Robotnik roboticizes all the villagers and burns the village down.
Sonic #088: Family Matters
Sonic #088: Picking up the Pieces – Antoine, Bunnie, and Amy meet up with Knuckles and Rob o’ the Hedge in their search for Antoine’s father. Knuckles directs them to Albion, an advanced Echidna civilization outside of Angel Island that had long hid itself from the eyes of the outside world.
Sonic #089-090
Sonic #090: Between a Rock and a Hard Place – The roboticized General D’Coolette attacks Albion while Antoine, Bunnie, Amy, Rob, and Knuckles are there. Using a neutralizer given to him by Rotor on a refueling stop in the tundra, Antoine puts General D’Coolette in stasis so he can be transported.
Sonic #091-092 – Rotor returns to Knothole. Robotnik attempts to test the newly acquired Sword of Acorns on Uncle Chuck and Muttski to see if it really can restore Robians’ free will. However, because Chuck and Muttski already had their free will restored during the fight to rescue Elias, it appears to have no effect as Chuck and Muttski continue pretending to be under his control. Robotnik throws the sword to the ground in frustration, and it is stolen by Arachnis. Elias and Geoffrey discover that the sword is missing from Knothole, and Mina reluctantly tells them that Sonic took it. Overlander ships from space land outside of Robotropolis; after noticing that one of the families is the Kintobors, Robotnik’s own brother (who he hates) and his wife and child, he tricks them into coming into Mobotropolis so that he can roboticize them.
Sonic #093
Sonic #094 – Robotnik continues his ruse with the Kintobors. They explain that after the Great War, the Overlanders wanted a fresh start away from the Mobians, but failed to find anywhere suitable. Robotnik catches Snively breaking curfew and imprisons him. Sonic and the Freedom Fighters have their first day of school, but Sally is receiving private lessons at the castle so Sonic doesn’t see her. He’s worried she hates him. Athair meets Tails in the hallway and sweeps him away under “Chosen One” pretenses. Until further notice, Tails is missing from the main story and is appearing in the Knuckles story.
Sonic #096 – Kodos is found unconscious with radiation poisoning for unknown reasons, and Geoffrey is tasked with determining what happened. At school, Mina asks Sonic to tutor her in speed. A robot breaks into the school and delivers a message to Sonic from Uncle Chuck, confirming to him that the Sword of Acorn returned Chuck’s free will. Chuck says that Arachnis has stolen the sword.
Sonic #098 – Intro to Sonic Adventure 2. The raid on the ARK. Sonic is captured by GUN after Shadow steals an emerald. It is implied that the rest of the events of SA2 took place between #098 and #099.
Sonic #099 – Tails returns home. While Sonic is trying to help Mina control her speed, she becomes frustrated when it doesn’t come as easily to her as it does to Sonic. She kisses him, and Sally sees this and becomes jealous (though Sonic reacts poorly). Kodos escapes and attacks Arachnis to learn the location of the sword. Sally finds Arachnis and races to beat Kodos to the sword.
Sonic #100 – Sally retrieves the sword before Kodos and throws him into a ravine using its power. Nate goes to Robotropolis to warn the Overlanders of the deadly toxins in the city’s air, and the Freedom Fighters and Mina go after him. Chuck and Muttski reveal their soundness of mind to Robotnik in order to save Nate from being roboticized. Sally uses the Sword of Acorns to free every Robian in Robotropolis, but Nate is unable to escape Robotropolis.
Sonic #102 [Last Knuckles story until #106]
Sonic #105: You Say You Want a Revelation?
Sonic #106-107 – Sonic and Sally negotiate with the Overlanders of the Hidden City (Station Square)  in order to find a place for the Overlanders of Robotropolis to stay. They agree, on the condition that the Freedom Fighters help defeat a dragon that’s been terrorizing Station Square. Knuckles stories resume.
Sonic #108: A Girl Named Hope!
Sonic #109 – The Freedom Fighters use the Sword of Acorns to free Rotor’s herd from Robotnik’s control. Sally talks to Mina and realizes that Sonic does not return Mina’s feelings.
Sonic #110-112
Sonic #114
Sonic #117
Sonic #118 – Aliens called the Bem make Robotnik and Snively human again. Geoffrey and Hershey’s nanite infection is cured by Rotor. Geoffrey feels that he failed Elias, the kingdom, and his father’s memory because of his need to prove himself as capable as Sonic. He believes his ego and overconfidence led, however indirectly, to his team falling victim to the nanites and Elias self-exile. Hershey tells him that he’s a hero despite losing his way, and they kiss. Hershey and Geoffrey announce to the Acorns that they will be leaving to search for Elias.
Sonic #119: Dust Bunnie and Time Code
Sonic #120-122
Sonic #123: Heart Held Hostage Pt 2 – Mina and Sonic rescue Sally from Nack and his gang. When Sally and Sonic reunite, Sally says she loves him and they kiss, shattering Mina’s hopes of being with Sonic. She jumps in front of one of Nack’s bullets to save Sally. She survives.
Sonic #123: The Last Robian
Sonic #124 – Shadow survived the events of SA2 because an alien race called the Bem took him in and healed him. He crash lands in Knothole just as the kingdom is learning of an incoming threat: an attack from an alien race called the Xorda, who claim to have come to “Earth” 3000 years ago with goals of peace, but were captured and studied by humans. As revenge, they set bombs to wipe out all of “Earth”’s life. Now, having realized that life on “Earth” survived anyways, they’ve returned to correct this mistake. Sally and Nicole discover that Earth and Mobius are the same planet. Sally asks her parents to accept Sonic as her royal consort so they can get married in the future, and they agree happily.
Sonic #125
Sonic #126-128 – Sonic wakes up on an alien planet, billions of lightyears away from Mobius. He battles and/or receives help from various alien races in his struggle to return home.
Sonic #129-137 [First story of Mobius 25 Years Later is at the end of #131. Mostly tied to Knuckles. Not recommended reading.]
Sonic #141 – Eggman captures all the citizens of Echidnaopolis in his egg grapes: chambers that drain the life force of living creatures in order to power the city of New Megaopolis.
Sonic #142: I Wanna Be a Freedom Fighter!
Sonic #144: Love and Loss
Sonic #145: Harbinger
Sonic #146-147
Sonic #148: The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown Pt 3 and Playing Around
Sonic #149: The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown Pt 4
Sonic #150 – After a quarrel with Evil Antoine (Patch), Evil Sonic trapped Patch on Mobius Prime, kidnapping Antoine Prime and threatening him that if Antoine doesn’t play the part of Patch, he’ll never see home again. Evil Sonic is frustrated to see that Patch has been making the best of his situation, rising in the ranks under Antoine Prime’s name, which inspires Evil Sonic to try and do the same on Mobius Prime. He flirts with Mina, Fiona, Bunnie, and Amy, all four girls under the impression that he is Sonic. On Angel Island, Rouge attempts to charm Locke so she can try and get to the Master Emerald. She is interrupted when Archimedes teleports her to Knothole.

What’s in a Name?
You know something? In Pre-Reboot Archie, the implications behind Julian Kintobor changing his name to Ivo Robotnik takes on some very interesting dimensions when you look at the whole picture of things.
Tumblr media
One of the things that could make the Pre-Reboot Archie continuity so fascinating was that it was an unplanned hodgepodge of often conflicting personal visions of the writers, intermixed with hastily included details from the games as they came out. It created a weird, chaotic mix of things, but in a lot of ways part of the fun was trying to reconcile these disparate elements... as well as considering the way details could be re-contextualized in the long run.
Me being me, I tend to focus on ol blubber bolts, and in this case? When you step back and take in the full scope of the various details in Preboot Archie, it paints a rather fascinating picture of Julian’s mindset.
So, anyway. As You Know, Dr. Ivo Robotnik began life as Julian Kintobor, and upon conquering Mobotropolis and starting up his empire he re-christened himself “Dr. Ivo Robotnik”. Now, on its own the reason why he’d do this would seem pretty obvious- “Robotnik” better reflects who he is and what he’s about, and the second Sonic Kids special would corroborate this idea with the man himself admitting he finds Ivo Robotnik to be a more imposing name than his given one.
Tumblr media
Without directly naming certain Infamous Real Life Individuals, it has pretty good historical precedence in the real world. “Robotnik” on its own makes enough sense, but that begs the question of “Ivo”. Why THAT name?
And this is where things get interesting!
For much of the comic’s early run, details about Robotnik’s life before he became Robotnik would be extremely scarce, and things would only really be fleshed out after he died. However, issue 50 revealed an interesting little detail- Robotnik’s father was ALSO named ‘Ivo’.
Tumblr media
This would give some interesting implications behind why Julian calls himself Ivo, given that it was also his father’s name... it is also a surprisingly clever reference to the games given that Ivo was Robotnik’s given name in the games of the time and remains Eggman’s own given name (if rarely brought up).
Later, this would be retconned lightly in the “Director’s Cut” version of issue 50, in which the “Son of Ivo” because “of the House of Ivo”.
Tumblr media
This doesn’t necessarily contradict the earlier version, as often belonging to a “House” tends to simply be a fancy way of simply saying you’re a part of your father’s family... but taken in this context, it also hypothetically means that Ivo isn’t simply his father’s name, but the name of his bloodline’s founder. Its not uncommon for prominent/aristocratic families to name their children after esteemed ancestors, after all.
Eventually Robotnik would die in Endgame, while an alternate version of himself, Robo-Robotnik, would take his place and eventually upgrade to the current Eggman design of the Modern Games, to better reflect said games at the time of their debut.

This sequence is one of those things that lives in my head-rent free, because its implied these things were built by the Original Robotnik, and just in general it brings up so, so many questions about the guy and his sense of self given that only one of those bodies looks better than he does while another actually looks even WORSE than how he normally does.
And those implications would become even MORE interesting once a certain game came along, a game that did something no other before had- actually exploring Eggman’s family history!

The Adventure Games in general had the writers scrambling to incorporate elements from said games, and not always gracefully. And the revelations about Eggman’s family in particular would send a pretty huge monkey wrench into the works when it came to the logistic’s of Ivo’s family history in Archie.

While debuting as “Professor Gerald”, his existence created even more questions regarding Robotnik’s back-up “Eggman” body that were never intended by Karl Bollers, chief among them “Why would Robotnik want to look more like his grandfather?”. In Sonic Adventure 2 Eggman would elaborate on how he admired his grandfather and scientific genius, so it might stand to reason that Julian would have felt similar growing up... this would also add a new context to him taking the surname “Robotnik”, indicating he did it purposefully to honor his grandfather. This would mean that both components of Julian’s new name were chosen from his predecessors, and that he found it perfectly acceptable to even physically resemble one of those predecessors.
Eventually Ian Flynn would come on board, and in that way of his he’d take all the odd and sometimes contradictory information about the Robotnik/Kintobor family and create a coherent whole from it.

One of the bigger reveals from this was that Gerald Robotnik was, in fact, Julian’s MATERNAL grandfather and that the Robotnik name was her family name. Likewise, it would confirm that the “Ivo” in the House of Ivo was indeed the name of the bloodline’s founder, while acknowledging that the name originally belonged more recently to Robotnik’s father Ivo.
So still there is the question of “Why?”. One would think, given that Julian took his mother’s maiden name, that he did it out of similar affection and admiration the way he implicitly did for Gerald. But I’m not sure that’s really the case.

While details were fleshed out, Robotnik/Eggman’s life was never given an in-depth look beyond him having a strained relationship with his older brother Colin. Otherwise, details about the relationship with the rest of his family was never elaborated upon... however, I do remember an interesting detail that Flynn revealed during a Q and A session.
Now I’m doing this by memory, but I swear that I speak true, but if I do remember right? Someone asked about Eggman’s parents, and Flynn basically said that it was likely he’d disposed of them in order to get them out of the way. Which, hey, I can see pretty easily in Archie. If that is the case though, then Julian didn’t take his father’s name out affection.
This veers into the realm of headcanon, but I like to think of it as Robotnik not taking his father’s name to honor him, but rather to honor his ANCESTOR Ivo, in essence reclaiming the name from a parent he disliked enough to kill. “Ivo Robotnik” as such comes about as a result of Julian wishing to emulate prominent members of his family he respected and admired, rather than parents he implicitly did not, and this theory is enhanced again by the “Eggman” body that is again implicitly modeled after Gerald Robotnik.
I just find it interesting given that you wouldn’t think Julian/Eggman to be the sort of guy to indulge in this kind of sentimentality... but then, for as much there is sentimentality behind the action, it also kind of speaks to the kind of contempt he might have held for his immediate family and his desire to be more like esteemed individuals of his family’s past rather than what in his view might have been a mediocre, lackluster present.
I dunno, I’m just spitballing and waxing poetic at this point. Still, taken all together? The various reveals of the comic and the way it incorporated stuff into the games paints an odd kind of depth to something that was originally a rather small, un-complicated detail when it came to Robotnik/Eggman/The Walrus.
And I find that Neat.
