This miniature artists' book was pulled for a visiting book arts class this week and was a favorite with the students. To be between by Jody Williams (Flying Paper Press) utilizes a miniature book structure to enhance its content. As an accordion style, this little book features brass-hinged etched copper plate covers and color etching on handmade and Japanese papers. Within the book are two cutout panels featuring bars and a metal grid, letting the reader look through the book as well as serving as a reminder of division and the ‘between’ of reading. A line from the little book stands out to define the book itself--

                        “content, unclear. 

In between it seems to seem to mean a different thing 

                                                     or different things.”

Of course, I have been bingeing Stranger Things so its not much a stretch that this little book has me thinking about alternate and parallel worlds and the moments were we are found ‘between’.

If you can guess who’s eye this is you get ten points for Gryffindor 😉 So here’s a close up of an eye that I’m trying re-edit. It’s not quite where I want it to be because the rim of his glasses are throwing me off. But I’m super happy with the values and tones around the eye 😁 This was also a little challenging because I am painting over something that has already dried up. And as an oil painter who is trying to achieve realism, its very difficult to get right. In between bouts of rain, I’ve been noticing a lot of activity at my backyard birdfeeder this week, so it feels appropriate to share one of my favorite artists book inspired by feathered visitors. Sentinella, an artists’ book by Daniel Essig is one of my favorite things in the stacks. 

An edition of one, it was made by the North Carolina based artist in 2013 and is an excellent example of an artists’ book as object. A creator of artists’ books and book-based sculpture, the artist creates art and structures inspired by historical bindings. Featuring a carved bird, bespeckled with text, the avian sentinel perches on a wooden boat filled with metal type and a miniature book. The miniature book is blank; two thorns are set under glass in the front cover. The book, boat, and bird are made of Italian Olive, mahogany, milk paint, printers type, mica, and thorns; the miniature book is bound in an Ethiopian Coptic style.

This is a painting that I did a while ago. It was finally time to give it to the person who requested it from me but before I did, I realized that this painting needed a lot of tweaking and editing. I darkened the burnt umber and black areas, brightened her eyes, added some highlights to the lips and touched up the background so that the overall painting had a soft look.
