Remembering Jody Williams, 1956-2023
In August, I met with Minneapolis book artist Jody Williams. We gossiped about other artists, talked about tiny things, and she shared stories about her life-long love of books and her chaotic 1960s childhood, growing up near Chicago with five siblings. But the real reason she was visiting was to sell old work from her archive. I've been buying Jody's work for the Hennepin County Library's Book Arts and Fine Press Collection for over a decade, but didn't have any of her early work and wanted to better document her legacy as a book artist. She brought with her nearly all of her books--work spanning over thirty years as a book artist--and it all fit in just one box. Jody's work is tiny.
She had the first editioned artists' book she ever made, her first book housed in a box, her first book under the name Flying Paper Press, her first book printed in her own studio, a book about phobias, an alphabet bestiary jack-in-the-box, books which melded her training in printmaking and metalworking, and her semi-annual periodical devoted to tiny things, among others. What they all had in common was their diminutive size, Jody-designed font, and impeccable precision. We now have 20 of Jody Williams' books in our collection.
Jody died on October 17, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. She will be missed and will be remembered fondly for her contributions to book and printing arts in the Twin Cities.
Jody's books will be on display at Minneapolis Central Library starting in mid-December 2023 through February 2024.

In the Land of Tiny Books
Our Head of Special Collections Max Yela has collaborated for decades with Milwaukee artist and art professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Leslie Fedorchuk (on the left in the first image; Max is on the right). This semester, Leslie is teaching a MIAD course called "Magical Miniatures" and she brought her class over for a discussion and review of artists books that use small scale as expression.
While Max is not very fond of miniatures or the miniaturization of books, he does like books that are small for compositional reasons. In fact, one of his favorite artists books, In Here Out There (third image) by the late Minnesota artist Jody Williams, is quite small (5 x 7 cm). Since we hold about 95% of Jody Williams's work and about 90% of the small editioned work of Peter & Donna Thomas, after a discussion, the class spent time reviewing selected works by these artists, plus about a dozen others by local book artists.
This was the first time these art students, many of them Juniors and Seniors, had ever encountered artists books before, and all expressed that it was a transformative experience. We look forward to seeing some of the book work that comes out of the assignments for this class!
The photographs shown here were taken by MIAD Web Content Specialist Olivia Langby.

Rita Sodi and Jody Williams on Via Carota’s New Bottled Craft Cocktails Six classic drinks from the beloved West Village trattoria Jody Williams and Rita Sodi’s restaurant partnership is one of New York City legend. Back in 2008, Williams (at the time a chef at one of Keith McNally’s venues) visited Sodi’s recently opened Tuscan-style eatery on the West Village’s Christopher Street, I Sodi, sat at the bar and was so overwhelmed by the food that she … https://coolhunting.com/food-drink/rita-sodi-and-jody-williams-on-via-carotas-new-bottled-craft-cocktails/

Hi fun Doctor Who thought: I think if the show ever wanted to be Super Clever, then the season leading up to a regeneration should have 1 episode that has some EXTREME plot holes, like to the point fans are like "how did they ever fix x they never explained that". Like even the Doctor is like "yeah I'm not really sure what happened to that". HOWEVER that episode should also feature one of the companions bumping into a couple of people that are walking past. It should look like a cameo, at least one of the actors should be semi-well known. A couple weeks after that, the semi-well known actor should be announced as the next doctor.
AND THEN IN THE NEXT SEASON: the regenerated doctor and the new companion land in the same spot (cause we know damn well the Doctor loves to visit the same time periods and places over and over) and the Doctor realizes "oh wait. I'm who cleaned that up" and like half the episode should just be them trying to avoid the past incarnation. If possible these episodes should be filmed at the same time.
Whatever the title of the first episode was, the episode in the next season is called pt. 2.
THEY WILL NEVER DO IT BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE NEAT.

"It’s really important, I think, in any era of Doctor Who, for the Doctor to have an emotional journey, to have an arc and go on a voyage of discovery through their time on the show. I always knew this was going to be the arc for Jodie’s Doctor."

I think one of the best, most beautiful thing about Doctor Who is that it can quite literally go on forever.
It has a constantly rotating cast, writers, producers, everything. As long as people can think of more stories to write about it, and there are people who want to watch it, it can keep going.
And isn't that wonderful!? It's a legacy! And it can be one that literally never ends.

Another Jody Williams Feathursday
We hold a comprehensive collection of small artists books from Minneapolis printmaker and book artist Jody Williams's Flying Paper Press, and we even posted about one in a previous Feathursday. We just acquired a new crop of Flying Paper Press books and one of them is a three-volume boxed set of little, two-inch accordion books entitled Sand, Sea, Sky produced in an edition of 100 sets in 2003. The set reflects on the qualities of the shore, the sea, and the sky, illustrated with the creatures that inhabit each place. For this Feathursday we show the Sky volume with its many birds and other flying creatures. The book's hardcovers are Japanese papers (suminagashi and chiyogami) over bookbinders' board, and the book pages are printed on Rives BFK paper in black from intaglio plates on the front, and in a color pattern from linoleum blocks on the back (we are only showing the front side).
