There is so many similarities and mannerism between 11 and Rory, it’s uncanny. One of the important ones I can think of is when Rory comes back in the Pandorica Opens (after he was meant to be erased from time and space), and the Doctor is talking about missing the obvious before coming to the realization that Rory is standing RIGHT there in front of him, and gently pokes him in the chest in disbelief that his friend is alive and breathing.
Then the same thing happens AGAIN in the Impossible Astronaut, after they buried the future 11th Doctor on the beach in Utah, and they reunite in the diner and Rory does the exact same thing the Doctor did to him poking him in his chest to make sure he was still alive.
Their friendship is often up and down with how conflicting Amy’s feelings are for the two of them, but the two care for each other and for Amy, and I think Rory teaches the Doctor the very best of humanity.
To me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly, the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.
