In the Land of Tiny Books
Our Head of Special Collections Max Yela has collaborated for decades with Milwaukee artist and art professor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Leslie Fedorchuk (on the left in the first image; Max is on the right). This semester, Leslie is teaching a MIAD course called "Magical Miniatures" and she brought her class over for a discussion and review of artists books that use small scale as expression.
While Max is not very fond of miniatures or the miniaturization of books, he does like books that are small for compositional reasons. In fact, one of his favorite artists books, In Here Out There (third image) by the late Minnesota artist Jody Williams, is quite small (5 x 7 cm). Since we hold about 95% of Jody Williams's work and about 90% of the small editioned work of Peter & Donna Thomas, after a discussion, the class spent time reviewing selected works by these artists, plus about a dozen others by local book artists.
This was the first time these art students, many of them Juniors and Seniors, had ever encountered artists books before, and all expressed that it was a transformative experience. We look forward to seeing some of the book work that comes out of the assignments for this class!
The photographs shown here were taken by MIAD Web Content Specialist Olivia Langby.

Accordion to zither : a musical ABC / Peter & Donna Thomas.
This is part of a series focusing on a small fraction of the lovely artists books by Peter and Donna Thomas!
Today's book is another ABC- but a very musical one this time. It features both the instruments, as well as a colorful abstract letter for each one. It includes both popular instruments such as violins and flutes, as well as less common ones such as washboards and dulcimers.
Peter and Donna Thomas are "book artists from Santa Cruz, CA. They work both collaboratively and individually; letterpress printing, hand-lettering and illustrating texts, making paper, and hand binding both fine press and artists’ books." They have made over 100 limited edition books, often with Peter making the paper, and Donna doing the illustrations.
Check out more of Donna and Peter's books at UIowa here.

Nan Penhallow - born in 1904***
Roger Dark - born in 1890***

Peter Penhallow - born between 1888 and 1890***
Margaret Penhallow - born 1872***
Brian Dark - born 1916***
Hugh Dark - born in 1887***
Joscelyn Penhallow: born between 1889-1892***
*In both Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley Shirley is two years older than Rilla. But in Rilla of Ingleside, he turns eighteen few months before Rilla... it is pure chaos. Rilla was supposed to be nearly fourteen, according to the RV, in 1914, but she is nearly fifteen in RoI. So I apologize, but I had a lot of trouble here...
**The Blue Castle is the most difficult to place in time. It is set several years before it was published, and in my own opinion: before Tangled Web and Pat of Silver Bush. Why? Because of this reference: "This was before the day of bobs and was regarded as a wild, unheard-of proceeding—unless you had typhoid." (The Blue Castle). Bobs were already "in fashion" at the beginning of Pat of Silver Bush (so, in 1919, when Pat was six years old: it was said that Winnie wanted to have her hair bobbed) and in Tangled Web (which is set in 1922). Yet, the cars, motorboats and movie theaters were a rather common occurence in The Blue Castle's times. But... there might be an explanation. Valancy doesn't live on PEI, which might have been a little "behind" the rest of Canada, as far as modern technology went. It is my own personal opinion, but I think that it might be set just before the war, at the same time as the end Emily's Quest. I know that the clothes seem more "modern" in TBC, but Emily wore "a little sport suit" and dress that was described as followed "there was so little of it". Teddy and Perry both had cars, as sone of Ilse's cousins. I would say that the Blue Castle book might be set around 1912-1913. Still, the timeline is extremely elusive. Please, let me know, dear Blue Castle Book Club's members, what is your opinion? I think I have read some amazing discussion about TBC's timeline a long time ago, but if I remember correctly, everyone was certain that this novel was set post WWI (me included, until this very moment when I tried to place Pat and Tangled Web and remembered the "bob" quote). So I choose 1912 as the beginning of TBC, when Valancy was twenty-nine.
*** the ages of characters in Tangled Web:
"They were first cousins, who were born the same day and married the same day,--Donna to her own second cousin, Barry Dark, and Virginia to Edmond Powell--two weeks before they had left for Valcartier. Edmond Powell had died of pneumonia in the training camp, but Barry Dark had his crowded hour of glorious life somewhere in France." (Tangled Web).
"Virginia Powell, whose husband had been dead eight years and who was young and tolerably beautiful" (Tangled Web).
"Valcartier, Quebec was the primary training base for the First Canadian Contingent in 1914."
- from: https://www.warmuseum.ca/firstworldwar/history/going-to-war/canada-enters-the-war/training-at-valcartier/
So, from this I assumed that Virginia's husband died in 1914 (so Tangled Web is set in 1922-23). Gay is 18 at the beginning, so she would be born in 1904. If Donna and Virginia were 18-20 when they got married, they would be 26-28 (so still "young"). at the beginning. Peter was 14 when Donna was 8, so he'd be 32-34 at the beginning of the book (same age or a bit older than Roger). Hugh was 35 at the beginning. I guess Joscelyn was a bit younger- most of LMM's heroines are at least two years younger than their love interest. I'd say she might have been 20-23 when she got married, so she'd be around 30-33 at the beginning of the book. I would say Brian is about six years old - he doesn't seem to attend school yet, but is big enough to be sent to the harbour. Margaret Penhallow was about fifty at the beginning of the book.
So sorry that this post was rather long, but it was a great fun to write (even if it took me A LOT of time). Thank you for reading. Please, let me know if you agree. Any feedback will be very welcome!

ELVIS RECORDED A SONG FOR HIS FATHER
The story of the track “If I’m A Fool (For Loving You)” recorded at the American Sound Studio in Memphis, Tennessee (1969)

JANUARY 20, 1969 - AMERICAN SOUND STUDIO, MEMPHIS TENNESSEE
Elvis was working with the musicians in the studio since the night before, January 19. The night went on and it was already past midnight when, during a pause to catch the breath, Elvis Presley casually finds another song to record yet at that same recording session.
Tumblr media
JANUARY 20, 1969 - AMERICAN SOUND STUDIO, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE By 4:30 the next morning they were tired — and they’d pretty much exhausted the song list they’d come in with. Elvis and piano player Bobby Wood were sitting quietly on the piano bench talking about religion and music. Bobby had had a minor hit as a recording artist with “Searchin’” and had recorded Sun writer Stan Kesler’s “If I’m A Fool (For Loving You).” Elvis introduced Bobby to his father, and when Vernon said that “If I’m A Fool” was one of his favorites, Elvis decided to give it a try. Excerpt from "Elvis Presley: A Life in Music - The Complete Recording Sessions" (1998) by Ernst Jorgensen and Peter Guralnick
In an interview, this is what Bobby himself said about that moment:
Q: In 1964, you had a hit. Can you tell us when Elvis covered it? A: Yes, 'If I'm a Fool' in 1964 was a pretty big hit for me and so Elvis had know about that and his dad came in one night at the studio while we were recording Elvis. And he said, 'Dad, I'd like to have you meet somebody here'. And so he brought him over and I shook hands with him and then he introduced us and he said, 'Do you know who this guy is?' And he said, 'No, I'm not sure'. So Elvis said, 'What's your favorite record'. And he said, 'If I'm a Fool'. And he said, 'This is the guy that sang it'. And of course his father just said, 'Woah'. So Elvis went on and did it for his dad because that was one of his dad's favorite songs at the time.

What Elvis thought about his own performance on the song:
Maybe it was just too late in the day to introduce a new song, but even with Bobby’s help the master they produced elicited only one word from Elvis: “Rotten.” It’s a measure of how high Elvis’s standards had risen by this point: The master of “If I’m A Fool” may have been one of the lesser cuts Elvis made at American, but measured against the years of Hollywood soundtrack crap that came before, it was still a giant leap of musicality. Excerpt from "Elvis Presley: A Life in Music - The Complete Recording Sessions" (1998) by Ernst Jorgensen and Peter Guralnick

— ADDITIONAL INFO
Elvis didn't only covered one version from his pianist Bobby Wood previously recorded tracks, but two. Still from the "Elvis Presley: A Life In Music" book:
On the 22nd Elvis returned to do repairs and to try another song Bobby Wood had recorded, the religious “Who Am I”.
youtube
Elvis' second song cover that had been previously recorded by Bobby Wood, "Who Am I?" was recorded in February 22, 1969 at the American Sound Studio, and first released in March 1971 in the compilation album "You'll Never Walk Alone". The track followed the same destiny as "If I'm A Fool (For Loving You)" being later released as a part of the "From Elvis in Memphis – 40th Anniversary Edition" (2009) also as a bonus track. Unfortunately I couldn't find Bobby's recording, not even the released EP with it.

Well, well, well. Such a nice info I came across today. I wonder if Vernon liked his son's version of Bobby Wood's country song "If I'm A Fool", one of his favorites at the time. Anyhow, it's cute to learn Elvis was not at first interested in recording this song until he acknowledged his father's personal liking of it. I guess it makes this tune a special gift to Vernon from his son, if you think about it. It was one 'at the spur of the moment' decisions when Elvis just followed his heart. ♥

I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

A Mushroom ABC. by Peter and Donna Thomas
For the beginning of summer, MiniMondays is going to have a series focusing on a small fraction of the lovely artists books by Peter and Donna Thomas!
For our book after a long weekend, we have some lovely illustrations of mushrooms in an ABC accordion book!
"Printed watercolors on one side of an accordion folded handmade sheet (50 x 150 mm.), shaped to resemble a mushroom. First and last folded leaves mounted on two paper boards, covered with gray paper, and also shaped as a mushroom. Title paper label on front cover. Issued in a slipcase covered with paper and with a mylar front cover that reveals the shaped binding."--Catalog

Note
sorry i want to clarify - top 5 murder mystery books please!
Okay, okay.
#1 with a bullet is Strong Poison by Dorothy L Sayers, you do not understand the crush I had (have) on Peter Wimsey.
Secret History by Donna Tartt (I'm not sure I recommend the rest of what she's written, but Secret History is such fantastic melodramatic insanity)
White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig - high school noir, reminds me of Brick, which is such a fantastic weird little movie
early Anne Perry Charlotte & Thomas Pitt mysteries - I lost track somewhere along the line, but the early ones were formative
the Vicky Bliss mysteries by Elizabeth Peters - okay, it's been a while since I've read them, so no promises there's nothing problematic in them given when they were written - but art historian + international art thief . . . I mean, are we surprised I imprinted on these?
