1980s Horror Film Character Names

I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.

Some naming ideas for Star Trek or other space/alien kind of worlds that are not name+last name or the other way round (some are based on already existing human naming traditions):

You have a name and several last names. They may be your parents' or they may be related to important people in your life or in the life of your parents, even if there is one you use more often for whatever the reason (it's shorter, it's more convenient, you don't want to explain,...). It is accepted to change your last name but never your name or the other way round.

You have several names and no last name. Some names you were given, some you chose for yourself. They may tell the story of your life, they may honor important people in your family or in your life. You tend to use one but other people who met you under a different name use another. Or there is The Official Name and then the family name or the leisure name. Maybe even A Secret Name that is not documented anywhere and only a few people know.

You have a name and patronymics and/or matronymics but no last name. You are systematically called by the patronymic/matronymic, only a few use your first name. Or the other way round, knowing the patronymic/matronymic is a proof of confidence.

There is an absolute refusal of hierarchy/polite terms in your culture and language, so you always carry dressing and decoration with your family name and your personal name so that even unknown people can call you by one of your names because using any other word to refer to anyone would be impolite. The international relationships have created new costumes with the name in different languages (the most frequent ones with whom you deal) so as to make it easier for everyone. Outsiders still fail miserably often.

Children have no name until they choose one and they must stick to it because it cannot be changed. This gives some funny and interesting names but it also gives unnamed teenagers because they don't want to get it wrong. They are addressed by some physical characteristic until they do and as such, many just stay with the nickname instead. That is it, that is the only name you'll have. No last name or family name of any kind. Just a nickname.

There is a very rigid naming system. There are not short versions of names, of affectionate ways of using the name. The last name is chosen by the government according to a system that only makes sense to the natives of that culture. It is not related to family, or to a job, or to a place of origin. The first name is chosen by the birthing parent, exclusively, in secret, after they check the archives to make sure it will be a unique name, it's some kind of deep quest that takes place from the moment the pregnancy is confirmed. There is a ceremony before the birth to announce. Nobody shares their first name with anyone else. It cannot be a word that already exists in that language.

All first names must be abstract names related to emotions, feelings, experiences, etc. Or, all first names must be tangible everyday things like furniture, food, tools... The family name is related to nature or, since space exploration began, the cosmos.

Every person who is born and lives in the same village, town or city until their teenage years is given the last name of the place and it is understood that is their family. If the parents (or family-blood) or the child move to another place, the child will move nameless and will remain nameless until they decide which of the two places is their family-place (most people choose the last place of living). By the time they come of age, they all should have a last name so that the family-place can be identified. Their personal name is the name of the family-blood, so they all share the same name, regardless of their gender or age. Yes, it is confusing for outsiders, but outsiders don't know they are almost a hive mind with little to none understanding of "individual", even when they are apart. For them it's just like a long arm stretching far away. Yes, sometimes it hurts.

spend hours thinking of a first name that fits the character perfectly, then make that also be their last name

pretend to play a sonata on a dactyl manuform keyboard; the name is the first pronounceable string

TFs name goldmine

I was checking synonyms for "trainwreck" and idk I guess my mind is skewed because so many of the words I saw sounded to me like legit transformer names.

And since Breakdown and Misfire are canon and on the list I found I feel justified in my reasoning. I mean look at those and tell me it's not a group that was doing worse than others in some boot camp and got crappy names and daily bullying from their boss/supervisor:

Fiasco, Debacle, Shambles, CarCrash, GoatRope, Washout, twins Clinker and Clunker, Letdown, Calamity, FalseStep, Whammy, Mishap, Downfall, Farce, Setback, Cockup and Screwup, Fizzer, Bringdown, Fumble, Smashup, Big Zero, Blue Ruin, Defect and Reject, Oversight...

That's already almost 30 and if you click on any of them you can get even more results like Fracas, Plight, Furor, Ruckus, Mismatch Jalopy or Rumpus. I even found Frenzy somewhere there.

Imagine some were named due to how they look (Mismach having spare parts from different models, blue colored Blue Ruin, big buff and clumsy Big Zero, Defect and Reject who were defective and therefore rejected) or what they did (Carcrash who crashed into several others during training, FalseStep who walked into a trap, Letdown and Downfall who messed up a mission) or what they believe in / how they are like (Whammy believing in magic, GoatRope spreading contradictonary rumors toconfuse everyone, Fizzer who tends to fizzle when damaged or just nervous)...

They don't have anything beside names and I love them already, someone send help...

New Things to Beware on the Internet

On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.

Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.

Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".

This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.

What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.

Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.

This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.

What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.

I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.

Be cautious out there.

okay so I have this idea for a new therapy thing. basically the idea is after an abusive relationship or a combat deployment or anything that might conceivably leave you with PTSD and a loss of ability to reasonably gauge how bad the shit that happened to you actually was, you sit there with a mental health professional for like, a solid 30 to 60 minutes, you tell them short vignettes of your experiences and they respond ONLY by rating how fucked up each one was on a scale from 1 to 10 and then you move on. the objective isn't to reflect deeply on specific experiences but to get a sustained series of reassurances that what you went through was, in fact, That Bad and gradually rebuild your trust in your own present and future ability to judge when what you're going through isn't okay.

currently calling it Rapid Fire Affirmation and Recalibration Therapy (RAP-FART). working title, open to feedback.

The creator of my favorite townie name mod ever said they took the first names from the book "The Complete Book of Baby Names" by Lesley Bolton - So I found that on Archive.org (you have to borrow the eBook from a library but it's free), and boy it sure is complete lol

The first 140 pages or so are these little themed lists, and then the remaining 536 pages are names in alphabetical order with meanings and alternate spellings listed for each one

What are some suggested/recommended names for a necromancer who is pursuing the path of Power through reckless indecision while at the same time trying to become an eldritch being.

She insists to go by as demented. (She REALLY seems to believe that she is too)which is the scary part.

I have another idea to write her growing into a better version of herself. That would be a fun really unexpected direction in terms of (no the necromancer doesn’t date Adhsari, although Adhsari and (Unnamed Rogue Scholar Character) do get together and have a history from the necromancer character.
