1. Does your OC ever base their decisions on a “gut feeling”? Or do they always weigh up the pros and cons carefully and dispassionately?
Kai is, quite frankly, all gut feeling. He's clever. He's quick-witted, even if he likes to give the impression otherwise, but the Raela is not a planner at all. His 'planning' is probably better called a 'wish list' as in 'I wish to get in here, get this thing, and get out' with no real idea of how to do so.
Left to his own devices, Kai goes with the flow and follows his own impulses. He is very much someone who just figures it out as he goes along and has faith in things 'working out'.

Hi Vee! I saw you reblog my bleach ask game.
My questions are 1, 14, and 21.
Who are your top three favorite characters and why? This is so hard. But: Ukitake - I know he's not one of the hotshot captains but in the SS arc he was so sure that Rukia's execution was uncalled for and then fights everyone who was supporting it. He's the best moral compass imo. Byakuya - the way he changes, becoming one of the best older brothers on the show, his insane raw talent and continuous character development
Urahara - the laid-back nerdy science guy with all the answers. No further explanation
14. Most heart-wrenching death?
Honestly, for me, it was Kaien's. The circumstances surrounding it, losing his wife, then getting possessed by the hollow and asking Rukia to kill him. Scars left on so many people everywhere. 21. If you could be in the Bleach universe would you be a soul reaper, visored, human, quincy, espada or arrancar?
Maybe a little controversial but I think I'd make a good Quincy. I have a thing for bows and arrows 😜

@piliyi, prompt —
go ahead. ask whatever you want. / tookai…
let it be said that tooru’s never claimed to be a guy who handles rejection well. most of the time it’s not enough of a reason to deter him from trying, but there’s always a little part of him that braces himself even in the asking.
so he’s hesitant, (he’s never done this before. he hasn’t even considered all the ways this could go wrong,) but. there’s something about kaien that makes him want to take that risk. it’s a kind of optimistic hope that he’s learned to let go of through the years, and it reaches back for him.
but first we have to set the scene. so, picture this: the air is warm with the scent of freshly baked pastries, the windows frosted over by the remnants of winter’s chill even as the beginnings of spring chases it away. kaien cuts a striking figure with his back resting casually against the counter, his grin piercing straight through tooru’s chest. tooru thinks he may look besotted, but he’s not in a position to judge — the glass display where his reflection sits isn’t what he’s paying attention to at the moment. it’s clichéd, perhaps, but in this snapshot of a moment he only has eyes for kaien.
“right,” he takes a deep breath. “no matter what, you’re not allowed to laugh, okay?”
and then, in the space of one single exhale, “willyougooutwithme?”

i’ve always read this scene as a hint towards the more protective streak that runs through byakuya regarding rukia, but at this point in the story he absolutely refuses to admit he has a single feeling about her so he has to couch it in passive aggressive bitchery.

howdy howdy (: I was wondering, because I didn't see it in my (admittedly cursory) search, and wanted to know if you folks have insight or headcannons about the timelines of Isshin and Kaien, since the timelines of bleach hurt my head (affectionate). Like, who died/went MIA first, if they would have been captain/vice captain at the same time, etc. I wondered if Matsumoto might have been a VC for a least a brief time while Kaien was, too? Idk, I think it'd be cute if Rukia had a little Shiba Connection with squad 10. I just find the six degrees of separation in osul society very fun to think about haha. Maybe it was Kaien who first crashed on the squad 10 couch during fillers to hang w his uncle, idk! (or maybe they didn't know eachother at all. I don't remember if it was ever mentioned...)
I feel ya about the Bleach timelines making your head hurt. I try not to think about them too hard, because they don’t make sense. I’ve just accepted that Shiba stuff happened in the *hand wavy* past. And that’s all we really need to know for the Bleach that’s presented to us. However, it is an interesting exercise to see how the vagueness of the timeline(s) can work out in fanfic. I’ve seen people put Kaien’s death AFTER Isshin had already disappeared and that legit had never occurred to me. I also feel like even in the Gotei’s culture of not talking about anything, if Kaien had only died when Isshin went missing, which was relatively recently by Soul Society standards, more people might mention him in at least passing.
Personally, I’d always assumed that Kaien’s death happened relatively early in Rukia’s tenure in the 13th. Like, maybe 10-15yrs after Rukia started? Kaien had to spend all that time training her and whatnot, since she graduated early from the Academy and only had Kuchiki-Kumon for an education. He needed to give her all that applied on-the-job training! I recognize that if Kaien died that early on, it would be a long time for a division to go without a VC but I feel like Ukitake would do that, and he’d get away with it because he’s Ukitake. I also buy the idea of Rukia having to mourn this guy for double the time she knew him (if we’re assuming that it’s been 40 years since Rukia left the Academy and our story starts).
Also if Kaien died really early on in Rukia’s time with the Gotei 13, I think it would explain why she feels so isolated from everyone. She didn’t have any companionship for a long long time, since Kaien was her only friend. If he died recently I think she’d be slightly better adjusted LOL. There’s no way he wouldn’t have dragged her out to make friends in 30+ years of working together. I recognize there’s a deep irony of “if the death were MORE recent Rukia would be better adjusted in the canon timeline” but you know it’s true. Kaien just gives the impression of being someone who was very briefly really great for Rukia and then torn abruptly away.
Plus if Kiyone took Rukia to her first living world mission… lmao Kaien would have to have been so dead at that point.
Side note: I also kinda feel like Isshin and Kaien didn’t know each other that well. Like, they knew of each other as cousin-uncle-whatever but weren’t besties even though they both worked in the Gotei. I got the feeling that Isshin also wasn’t a captain for too long before he went MIA, so he was probably toiling in the numbered ranks while Kaien was a VC. Kaien was the Shiba golden boy after all! And no one talks about Isshin that way LOL. I do love the six degrees of separation in Soul Society though, so maybe there are more juicy connections to uncover.

I just had a friend of mine say that Kaien is more attractive than Ichigo and I am feeling b e t r a y e d

Your friend is allowed to like walmart ichigo. Ppl aren’t required to have good taste in malewifes, it’s ok
Kaien’s just an Ichigo knockoff variant anyway tsk tsk.
Their color can be switched an no one would notice which one’s kaien, but let me just say Kaien using ✨Ichigo’s✨ face is prettier than Ichigo using kaien’s face and that says something 💅✨

Can you tell me your vision for aaroniero/kaien please it’s been haunting me for so long I need to know the vision
>:3
As you wish<3
What the groundwork for this ship is going off of the part of the series where Aaroniero lied to Rukia about how Kaien's consciousness lived on through the Hollow that ate him and ended up becoming the dominant soul.
And make it not completely a lie.
So basically my idea is that this is a bodysharing kind of deal, except that Kaien is not in control, he's present and can see and hear and feel everything, but only Aaroniero can hear his voice.
And Kaien is Aaroniero's favourite thing that he has ever eaten. So powerful and charming, a wonderfully friendly face to deceive people with, and to not only gain his memories, his body and his powers but Aaroniero gets to keep the soul itself? The consciousness? The man himself who had kept fighting and fighting to survive and now was just cradled inside of him and unable to do a thing?
Delicious. He belongs to Aaroniero in every possible way and the arrancar truly cannot help but fall a little in love in the most twisted, possessive and cannibalistic way possible.
Kaien, by this time, has been living as a Hollow for so long that his own moral standing has been changed. He has been on the other side of the mirror now, he's felt the insatiable hunger and the emptiness and he's mourned for his former life that he knows he can never return to.
Inside of Aaroniero he feels more whole, he feels full.
And YES of course the hand-tentacles get involved, what do you take me for?
Extra bonus, I hc that Kaien has the nicknames "Deep" and "Sharp" for Aaroniero's two heads, in reference to their respective voices.

“Is there a reason you’ve been following me for an hour?”(Kaien from Yoon ) @megumitsunami
Damn, he thought he'd been subtle enough. Kaien played dumb though, looking up from his phone to the man with a goofy expression.
"Huh?" He looked back and forth, then back at the man again with a lopsided smile. "Who, me?? Uh, no, I don't think so. What makes you ask that, man?" :)

Does your OC struggle to contain their baser emotions, such as lust, aggression or greed? What helps to keep these feelings in check (if anything actually does)?

4. Does your OC struggle to contain their baser emotions, such as lust, aggression or greed? What helps to keep these feelings in check (if anything actually does)?
Kai is a creature of high passions and strong emotions and he's normally pretty open about them. Fortunately, he's not too often aggressive so it's not usually displayed with violence or unkind intentions.
However, he can definitely be lustful and isn't shy about flirting and making his interests known. That said, Kai isn't so out of control that he can't take no for an answer. He certainly can and is good with boundaries.
Probably his strongest troubles come from greed. He tends to overindulge both food and drink when he has the opportunity and he's greedy about his little treasures. So he's definitely gotten himself into trouble not wanting to let go of something he desires.

Hi! Can I ask for Kaien Shiba bankai reaction thing? Thank you! :)
[other bankai reactions x]
Tumblr media
He’s super proud
Kaien always knew you could do it, if you just believed in yourself and tried to not overthink it
Definitely another run over to you, pick you up, and spin you around type of guy
Goes into town and buys some celebratory ohagi to share (which he eats to lion’s share of, but it’s the thought that counts.

'Makes me wonder what conversations Kyouraku and Ukitake had after Kaien died' -- very serious ones, I imagine.
I think Ukitake would've gone full 'regretting life choices' mode for a good long while, considering how close they were. Probably even until current canon before Rukia got prompted to his Lieutenant posting. Especially when her execution picked at that specific sensitive nerve.
He clearly hasn't abandoned the whole concept entirely, but probably became a LOT more flexible with its application soon after. Hence why he stepped into to protect Kyouraku against Starrk in FKT arc and dismissed any complaints with the flimsy justification of 'Technically 2 v 2 now'.
Context for the dash: This is in response to some tags I wrote (over a month ago... because we we have been establishing in the tags, we are very bad at this and very behind on the askbox /O\) about the kinds of conversations Kyouraku and Ukitake have had, and me thinking that they seem like the kind of people who would not agree on things pretty often, but really respected that conflict and enjoyed discussing things with each other—thuroughly, for decades on decades on decades.
Totally agree with you—Ukitake, with an intensity of regret that I feel like many would struggle to even conceive of. But Ukitake is well-practiced. (Ukitake intends to carry this regret, in its original form, for as close as he can get to eternity. That vacant VC seat will serve as a testament to that, felt daily. And it’s not that Kyouraku believes in traveling light—but he believes there are different ways to memorialize the past and he believes that memory is mutable and he believes that flavors other than regret can feel right in the hand, good in the mouth et cetera.)
I feel like by some alchemic property of regret, Ukitake might feel kind of bad about talking this through with Kyouraku, on account of what happened to Lisa. It wasn’t the same kind of situation—how could Kyouraku have known that to send her on that mission was to doom her?—but in the back of Ukitake’s kind he still wonders how he could possibly have seen Kyouraku through that and still thought, in that forest, and with Rukia watching, no less, that they should stand back and let Kaien fight for pride.
I love the way you stack up Kaien’s death+its long duree and Rukia’s would-be execution and ultimately her VCship, because I feel like for Rukia and Ukitake that trajectory and narrative is obvious—and then for so many others in Soul Society that narrative exists completely outside their awareness, like you can only be haunted by the ghosts you know.
