The tadfools were just SO connected for such a long amount of time that I can't imagine them seeing each other as anything but family after a good run, especially a good Resist Durge run. I think they'd swoop right in for one another like they were siblings if they absolutely needed something.

something great about wyll is like. how patient he is with other ppl. he NEVER expects them to be as good and kind as he is, and yet he still is patient and understanding with them. he has SEVEN YEARS of experience on the road, he can pierce a goblin all the way thru, hes got a +4 to animal handling, a +4 to intimidation, and yet with all his experience, he NEVER intimidates you. never even goes “get out of the way. let me do it.”

astarion says hes going to eat people and wyll doesn’t threaten to stake him—(nor does he when astarion actually bites him, even tho he teases from his very first reaction to astarion that hes ‘all bite.’) he says, youll have to settle for vagrant chickens. i imagine wyll would even help him chase some down.

wyll is respectful of the githyanki and lae’zel for being fearsome warriors, despite the war crimes

if you kill alfira, he doesnt blame you, he doesnt call you a monster, he simply mourns her loss, and genuinely understqnds the violence in you, and offers to help you redirect it

there are so many times wyll could just kill the dark urge/astarion and be done with it, and hes fully capable of doing so

and yet he CHOOSES to be kind, he chooses to help, he chooses to be a friend and a supportive “role model” in his own way. and he doesn’t make choices for people. he makes comments, sometimes sly, sometimes judgemental

but despite his extreme sense of righteousness. wyll is an extremely tolerant person who is generous with his kindness. he is careful with his words despite 99% of his dialogue being him being a silly goose. he is encouraging and so so so sweet

Halsin should have self image issues and be wildly insecure.

In all seriousness, hear me out. Halsin, jacked and hunky though he may be, is not exactly a "good" example of an elf according to 5E lore.

Slender, graceful, short, beautiful. All words I would apply to Astarion, save perhaps short. Not Halsin. I believe somewhere it also clarifies they shouldn't have body hair. Yet for better or worse, we know Halsin does.

Now, when discussing female beauty standards it's pretty commonly understood that someone who doesnt fit the ideal mold is going to grow up with some internalized issues over it. Why wouldn't Halsin? Imagine growing up his size, alongside a whole bunch or Astarion's. Kids making mean comments about how he's more of an orc than an elf after he hits a growth spurt. The absolute mortification that comes with growing "excessive" body hair when nobody else is.

I could honestly see something like that inspiring one to take up an interest in being a druid simply because he felt more at home as a bear than as an elf. Bears are big and burly and hairy, and nobody expects them to be otherwise. I mean, just the fact he identifies most with a bear feels like a comment on how he views himself. And on the surface that's fun and cute. But I think for an elf, it could have serious implications of self-worth issues.

Maybe not now, after he's clearly committed to life as a druid and has figured himself out. But I could see him being a pretty insecure teen/young adult. It could still have lingering affects on his romantic life as well.

Im fully imagining him as a kid with his mom making well intentioned shitty comments about if he *really* wants to eat that. "Maybe you should just have the salad."

Tfw a scene hits you with such force and clarity, it's absolutely like a religious vision

When Astarion gets up in the middle of the night to handle the twins so they will be quiet and let Mercy sleep, Mercy sneaks off to the undercity ruins. Theyre gone for hours hunting any Bhaalists who are trying to maintain the ruins, slaughtering the Bhaalists, and then going to the altar to yell directly at Bhaal, only to be met with silence. Mercy screaming that he couldn't take anything else from them. They'd make damn sure of it. Just never saying "You took everything you wanted from me, but you cannot have the twins." And it's a threat. One that isn't answered.

Then returning to a fretting Astarion (bc they're both still unlearning their codependency)

#bat rambles #durge and astarion are still working through toxic habits after the tadpoles are dealt with #they're both codependent and until this point havent had to be separated #or even like exist in a way that wasnt together #Mercy’s his emotional support person #and mercy is a guard dog who needs a job and their job is protecting Astarion so no one can get close #while he shoots an arrow through their throat #but now mercy also is feeling protective of the twins #not even maternal projectiveness or anything #they just can see who they were in the twins and if they got a chance #even with them spilling so much blood their body remembers what their mind cannot #mercy got a second chance and theyre going to extend that to the kids #it's just complicated and scary #astarion is still very much in his head and just performing so he doesnt have to think about the Horrors #he's just playing 5D short-term chess but he doesnt think of the twins as people yet #at best theyre like disgusting little gnolls #tolerating bc he can see Mercy isnt rejecting them #and mercy is like preparing for him to be like. this is NOT what i want #even tho he's absolutely thinking to himself it's barely a blip in his immortal life span #the time needed to rear the kids enough to be self sufficient and independent is nothing #but mercy will NOT ask him to stay they would never ask him to do something they think he may not wanna do #but bc no communication he's very confused about why they're so fucking angry at him all of a sudden #bc theyre pushing him away #their act 1 relationship was v much defined by communication issues by two people who dont know who they are #never love an anchor
