Aunt Hemulen
Exclusive to the second series of Adventures from Moominvalley, she came to Moominvalley to give her brother, Mr. Hemulen, a surprise visit, only to be sidetracked by a group of children with no adult supervision.
Infamous for a clip on YouTube of her most rude moment in the episode, Aunt Hemulen isn't actually such a terrible person, she just happens to be an extremely naggy person who has amazing cooking skills and a genuine care for these children she's never seen before. She has an extreme fear of the Groke and yet she took the hint when the children used that against her and let them be, only to speak of them very kindly to her brother and be saved by them when nearly drowning in the river.
Nana's Fiance
Not much is known about him besides being Mr. Hemulen's nephew, but we do know he had a disrespect for fireworks before his uncle taught him The Way. He seems like a fine gentleman, engaged to a pretty girl who became exhausted looking for him.

This episode is so interesting, because it's established within the first minutes that the Moomins have no money. And it's not like "they are poor", no, they just do not know how money works because they've never had any.
Now, the Moomins live in a big house, with pretty nice furniture. They never run out of food, they never need to pay rent, and nothing costs anything. No one in this society HAS money. The only one who actually seems to have an occupation is the policeman. Who hired him? No one knows. Does he get paid for his work?
The other ones in the valley who wants money, wants it for something that benefits them. Snork wants to order new parts to buy a flying machine (indicating that making this machine DOES cost money), Hemulen wants some new gadgets to look at flowers, and they cost money to get. Sniff is just a greedy bitch.
So, if all of this cost money, I wonder how they GOT THE STUFF THEY ALREADY OWNED IF THEY NEVER HAD MONEY BEFORE. I know Moominpappa built his own house, and I am guessing that didn't cost anything as he took wood from the forest, probably. Then it's possible all the furniture were handmade by them, too. Food, I know they gather their own food with gardening and having a forest nearby, plus a river with fish (however, no idea where they get eggs, because I haven't seen any hens... they eat pancakes a lot, and I don't know if the moomin pancakes are without eggs). But there are some things that I feel like they would've been bought. Unless, it's things they just obtained in other ways. Maybe via gifts, or trades, or maybe just the objects magically appeared in their house for the convenience.
This episode is just very anti-capitalist. Aunt Jane is so interesting in the way she thinks about money. She gets SURPRISED when people do not want her money, and at the same time she does not want to give out her money to just anyone. When Moominpappa tells her maybe she could invest her money in some charity, she BREAKS DOWN CRYING. She can't understand why he doesn't want them. She takes it as a personal offense.
And it kinda ends with a compromise. Moominpappa says that, he can have SOME of the money that they can keep in the basement to look at sometimes, and she agrees to put SOME of the money in a bank. But Moominpappa sees no use for it, and most likely he'd give it away to the first person who actually would need it.
I must say, it would be pretty nice to live in such a utopia where I don't need any money for anything and get by just fine. At the same time, it's interesting that some thing seems to actually cost money, when other things do not seem to cost anything at all.

so the first strip aunt jane is in is moomin and family life, but there's also the lars comic moomin and aunt jane (though that's specifically a christmas one and iirc she doesn't feature much in it so I can't see them using too much from it). with her character being this rich stick-in-the-mud, I can see them easily doing something completely original with her or just sticking her into pre-existing plot lines (she also reminds me a lot of the hemulen aunt so perhaps could be influenced by that character).
I can definitely see an episode with her ending the same way as family life does though, with the moomins tellling her they're fond of her and thereby softening her so she likes them, too.
I do wonder how they'll handle the relation though???? cause it's implied in the strips that she's moominpappa's relation (he does call her 'dear aunt'), but ofc in the series he's always harping on about how he's an orphan - will this be a long-lost reunion thing? maybe the whole premise is that she's vetting them to see how "worthy" they are of her inheritance? I'm interested to see how they introduce her~

💡Lightbulb Moment💡
Moominpappa's notable fear of aging might have to do with both his fragile masculinity and the fact that he lived in a very stifling and isolating environment for most of his childhood.
He didn't get the opportunity to grow up with friends or to feel understood or accepted nor did he get to do frivolous child things like collect bugs and the like. He only got that joy in life after a near-death experience and escaping that Foundling Home, and even still he had already coped with his grief by retreating inward and thinking that he's strange because he's above others and not below them, he had already coped with hoping that his family was special like royalty and he would have the opportunity to find out and brag about it, the one thing he ever wanted in his early like is to tell his peers and the Hemulen who raised him "I told you so! I told you I was worthy of love and respect!"
But he never got to. That was the point of the Hemulen Aunt's role in his story - it's to rip apart Moominpappa's one hope and leave him without that closure he begged for, then he could only move on to the next chapter of life.
And what he gained most from his previous life as a Lonely Child was a lifelong wanderlust, he wandered into danger twice without so much as a vague feeling, he left his wife and child in the events leading up to Moomins and the Great Flood likely because of that wanderlust (as I doubt the Hattifatteners "tricked him" into it as Moominmamma stubbornly told her children, being both deaf and mute creatures, there was a deep denial in her tone as she said so), and yet again did he wander aimlessly in the Secret of the Hattifatteners, a story which also tells us that this wandering for even days on end was a habit of his in which Moominmamma and folk could only believe in his promise to always return home afterwards.
He loves adventure! He's fascinated by the sea! His room is full of sea and sailor iconography in Moominvalley in November! It's even painted blue! And the marksman in his black tophat and domestic family life is yet to get enough of what that sea meant to him — adventure, freedom, and the vitality of youth.
Time and again in the comics he is lusting for trouble, he is looking to man an operation, even Moominmamma said herself that he refuses to grow up, but at the same time he can't stand being the Captain when opportunity or shame arises.
He always switches between satisfaction and dissatisfaction in his domesticity. Domesticity meant a lack of freedom to him growing up, and then once he escaped he vividly daydreamed of building his own Moominhouse, and then living in a house he helped build made him feel isolated and trapped again when he and his crew shared the same roof on the colony island, then he fell in love with Moominmamma, then he left her and Moomintroll, and despite this the first thing we see of him in the flesh was talk of building a house for himself and his family. In Secret of the Hattifatteners he comes to the conclusion that the monotony of domestic life is far, far better than aimless and emotionless wandering, and yet, in Moominpappa at Sea the inciting issue was his feeling of uselessness within the Moomin family dynamic. This back and forth relationship he has with domesticity is one of the key features of his character, it's one of the many, many oxymoronicisms in his characters.
He's both accepted his role as a Pappa, he defines himself as such, but at the same time he's very close to wanting to shed this identity for his adventures. He knows he is an adult with responsibilities but he refuses the idea of being old. He doesn't want his abilities to slip from his grasp, the "talent" he so prided himself with becoming stagnant and useless. He isn't nearly done with youth, he's only started his life at the midpoint of his existence, how dare time degrade him so?
How dare the hands of time march forward and drag him until his knees begin to crack? He's meant to be a famous adventurer, and yet he hasn't achieved it yet. He's been busy with other matters but... give him a few more chances at the very least.

Ooo no i would actually be very interested to hear ur thoughts on their species and such! I think it would be so interesting:0
ahhhh thank you! i have so many moomin thoughts to share but they unfortunately bounce around in my brain and i don’t organize them well. therefore! here is a list of my thoughts in regards to moomins and surrounding species:
- do moomins have opposable thumbs? my friend asked me this two years ago and i still think about it. i would assume so since they hold things the same way we do but that leads me to wonder:
- how long have moomins walked on just their legs? sure, they crawl from time to time, but so do we. it seems most of their surrounding species are in the same boat as them, but their ancestors (the little ones in moominland midwinter) crawl around.
- how many moomins are there? this ask was in response to a post i made asking people’s thoughts on the possibility of snorks/moomins/hemulens being different evolutions of the same original ancestor. inter-species relationships seem to be very common in the moomin world and it just makes me wonder how many moomins are out there? we really only know of the moomin family (including aunt jane, moominmamma’s grandmother etc.).
- how long do moomins live? if the ancestor is still out and about and the sample size of moomins we know are so young, how long do they have? i think a common consensus of moomin fans is that moomins do live a long time, which would make sense to me, considering it wouldn’t make sense via evolution for a species to change to die earlier. (@meadowlarker mentioned one time that she thought moomins just grow and grow until they turn into mountains and i’ve always thought about it because it’s so beautiful!)
- are snorks meant to migrate? when we meet snorkmaiden and snork they are travelling like snufkin is. if they are distantly related to moomins, who hibernate, then they probably don’t like winters. are they supposed to migrate??? i need to know!!!!
- are moomins meant to travel?? it’s a reoccurring plot point that moominpappa, and occasionally moominmamma need to leave their home for some adventure. for such settling down centric creatures it’s an interesting idea! moomin also has this curiosity in the world that i think would benefit from travel. maybe one year he joins snufkin i don’t know
- how much of a mumrik is snufkin? joxter, being our one example, is lazy and constantly on the move. despite snufkin leaving every winter, spring to fall is a long time to be in one place (even if you’re in love). we know snufkin is half mymble and i wonder if this makes settling down for periods of time bearable.
- do moomins get thicker fur in the winter? this is more of a hypothetical question because they must! and wouldn’t it be so cute!
i think that’s all for now! i think tove would tell me to just stop taking it all so seriously. but please! if anyone has thoughts i want to know them all. i also didn’t take science past second year of high school so if i’m completely misunderstanding basic evolutionary concepts please let me know!

Tayberry Moves Out
On overcoming anxiety
As May headed into its final week, Moomin was gradually able to relax somewhat and live a slightly more balanced lifestyle. They were able to go on a weekend camping trip with Snufkin and Moomintroll and briefly forget their worries. Little My began preparing the crew of the Scarlet Mymble for the annual voyage and pointedly tempting Moomin to join them. The entire crew had agreed that the voyage should be to The Hobgoblin’s Hotel every year after the excitement of last year’s trip.
“You never know, the Hotel may have an eye opening experience waiting just for you. Besides, Moominvalley will be awfully quiet with all of your friends gone. Snork Maiden will definitely miss your help in the galley. I don’t like admitting to having sentimental feelings for anyone, but I would miss you, too, if I’m to be completely honest.”, Little My reminded Moomin one afternoon in the first week of June while the family was having tea.
“If I’m meant to go anywhere, the Hotel can summon me perfectly well from here (at this they raised up the key around their neck to eye level to make their point).”, Moomin said.
“Alright, be stubborn. It’s not like I’m anyone to talk about backing down and being reasonable. Just remember that we’re leaving at the beginning of next week with or without you.”, said Little My.
“Why don’t you all just move into the Hotel permanently if you like it so much! It could send you back to Moominvalley at any time if you’re feeling nostalgic or homesick. Why would you want to come back here where you have to do everything for yourself! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some shopping to do!”, Moomin said, storming out of the front door with angry tears in their eyes.
With the boost from being upset, Moomin made their way to Linda Fillyjonk’s General Store in no time at all. Once there, Moomin realized that they had gone merely to get out of arguing with Little My, their parents and Snufkinpapa and had forgotten to make a shopping list. They stood in the middle of the store feeling ridiculous and getting more and more angry with themself as well as everyone else in their family. Linda came out from behind the counter that ran the length of the back wall and approached them calmly.
“You look like you could use a friend and a good listener more than groceries and dry goods. I’m here for you if you want me to be.”, said Linda.
“Oh! Thank you, Linda! I….it’s that my sibling, Tayberry, left Moominvalley with a new friend of hers and I’m afraid that she won’t come back….that everyone who holds Moominhouse together will go away, too! I can’t imagine Moominvalley without Moominhouse! I HAVE to do what it takes to hold it all together!”, Moomin said.
“Can I tell you a story? Fillyjonks are the biggest worriers in the world! Even more so than Hemulens! My aunt lived in a village a lot like this one in a large house her ancestors had built near the shore. Her children had all gone out into the world years ago and her husband had died immediately after the last of them departed. She kept the house immaculately clean and strictly organized to fend off any further changes in her life. She lived in constant fear and anxiety that her slightest mistake would bring her house down around her head and she would lose the last thing that gave her any sense of security. To make a long story short, a terrible storm came to shore and annihilated every trace of her house and all the things in it that she thought would fend off any disaster. She got out in time with only her life, the frock on her back, her most elegant pair of shoes, and her favorite hat on her head. She found, to her surprise, that her relief at having survived outweighed her considerable loss and that she was now free to move on. She found herself rejoicing over life itself and her newly discovered strength. The point is that no amount of worrying can fend off uncertainty, but that everyone has the strength to face both the good and bad times.”, said Linda.
“Is that story really true?! It must be! You wouldn’t tell me all that if it wasn’t! You……you’ve given me a lot to think about. My family has been trying to say the same things to me, but I was too angry at Tayberry for leaving to listen. I think I might go on this year’s voyage in the Scarlet Mymble after all. But first, I need to apologize to my family for being in such a bad temper with them.”, said Moomin.
The End

The Hemulen Aunt
Also known as the Hemulen's aunt, she was presumably the aunt of the orphanage principal from Moominpappa's Memoirs. She was saved from the Groke and was mistaken for her niece by the young Moominpappa and became a very bossy caretaker of the Oshun Oxtra until she got kidnapped by Niblings, and then later became their leader by teaching them writing and math. She isn't a mean woman, in fact she was very grateful toward the Oshun Oxtra in her letter for Muddler's wedding.
The Hemulen Who Loved Silence
The main character of a chapter of Tales From Moominvalley, he lived in a noisy family who ran an even noisier pleasure-ground. After a weeks-long flood washing the pleasure-ground away and his family coming up with the idea of opening an ice rink, he had enough and declared that he wants a pension and move out somewhere quiet. He also says his dream is to build a dollhouse but gets laughed out of wanting it anymore. After he moves to his grandmother's abandoned park, he is made by the children to rebuild the pleasure-ground with the parts they recovered. In the end, he opens a park of silence where there is no screaming or loud laughing, and much to his relief the children still enjoy it.

Hey dudes just found out that Mr Hemulen (and possibly the nice old hemulen lady who adopted the woodies in the 2019 adaption tho im not really sure) havent been treated nicely in the books and also we make funnof hemulens a lot. I know they can be exhausting sometimes with the strict rules and stuff, but can’t we give credit and respec for the ones who do deserve it? :”((

“The hemulens all share certain character traits: they like order, believe in duty, and strongly feel that rules and regulations should be followed – to the letter.”
That is actually a false encompassing trait. Principal Hemul, who runs a Foundling Home and is the biggest stick in the mud who doesn't have patience for a child with ADHD and is obsessed with cleanliness, is a special case and should not have been taken as an example for the whole species.

False again. Collections Hemul, who has collected everything in the universe, and his cousin Bugs Hemul, who collects bugs, are special cases and should not have been-
