3 Reasons Drone Photography Is Ideal For Small Businesses
Tumblr media
In the world of digital marketing, visuals are a crucial factor in capturing the attention of potential customers. Small businesses, in particular, seek innovative and cost-effective ways to showcase their products and services. This is where drone photography comes in. By utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with high-resolution cameras, this form of professional photography provides small businesses with a unique and impactful method to enhance their visual content. Here’s why drone photography is an ideal choice for small businesses:
Provide a fresh perspective
Drone photography offers a fresh and captivating perspective. By capturing images and videos from above, drones provide a bird's-eye view that cannot be replicated with traditional photography. Small businesses can showcase their locations, facilities, and products from unique angles, resulting in visually stunning content that grabs attention. Whether it's a real estate agency showcasing properties or an outdoor adventure company highlighting scenic locations, drone photography adds a wow factor that distinguishes businesses from their competitors.
Tell a story
Drone photography also enables small businesses to tell compelling stories through visual content. Drones can capture dynamic footage and create cinematic shots, evoking emotions and engaging viewers on a deeper level. For example, a tourism company can utilize drone footage to showcase breathtaking landscapes; a fitness studio can capture outdoor workout sessions, or a fashion boutique can highlight the latest trends in a unique outdoor setting. These captivating visuals enhance brand storytelling and leave a lasting impression on potential customers.
Show off your best angles
Drone photography proves to be an essential tool for small businesses in the real estate industry. High-quality aerial shots of properties provide potential buyers with a comprehensive view of the location, surrounding amenities, and notable features. This significantly enhances the marketing efforts of real estate agents, attracting more potential buyers and facilitating faster deal closures. Drones allow for stunning aerial shots of properties, showcasing their best angles and emphasizing their unique selling points.

Chan, K.H., 2017.  Why I'm afraid video games will continue to "bury its gays."  [Online] Polygon.com. Available at: <https://www.polygon.com/2017/8/4/16090980/life-is-strange-death-lgbtq-characters> [Accessed 19 November 2021].
The arguments showcased in this article emphasized the lack of open and complete representation of LGBTQ+ characters in video games.
The article recalls that the presence of female non-oversexualized main characters is only a recent change in the industry. Nowadays, the author denounces most studios of Queerbaiting, which means to simulate a fake homosexual relationship between characters without any open and clear-stated relationship. Often pointed out as a commercial selling point. The article takes the instance of the main female characters of the game "Life is strange".
The article also discusses common stereotypes in narrative mediums. "Bury your gay" is one of them and describe how often gay character ends up being sacrificed in stories after starting a homosexual relationship. For this case, the example taken is on several lesbian couples in the game "Life is strange", but also "Mass effect 3" or even "The last of us". This tradition of Homosexual sacrifice would come according to the author, to the  the "Motion Picture Production Code". Back in the 1930s, this set of industry guidelines for self-censorship described same-sex relationships as unpure, which must be punished through the story.
Nonetheless, the author points some good positive points and initiatives in the entertainment industry as with the video game "Dragon Age" by Bioware. Having great trans and overall queer representation such as the character of Krem, the studio was congratulated several times by LGBT associations and communities.
I found this article very thoughtful and essential as I want to open my own studio and create my own game and stories later in life. Thus, being aware of minority representation issues is something that would have consequences on my work later on.

Cox, D., 2014.  What Modern Interior Design Teaches Us About Environment Art. [Video] GDC Youtube channel. Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpjbkKjqPE8> [Accessed 26 November 2021].
This GDC lecture from Ubisoft Toronto's Dan Cox deals with the importance as an environment artist to get interested in interior design to create a better environment.
The author argues how similar are the two artistic practices and that by applying rules from professional interior designers, we can create space with more environment narration, guidance for the player, and aesthetics for the eyes.
The article takes both examples from the real world with direct application of interior design rules and video game instances such as gears of wars or mass effect. The first "Uncharted" also had issues with its ruins that were extremely hard to understand as the climbable shapes were merging with unclimbable surfaces in the decor. The second game resolved that issue by adding red paint of every climbing part.
Mr. Cox stressed his argumentation with the eight most important rules such as lighting, balance, emphasizes, contrast, rhythm, repetition, and proportion. The discussion of different colors balance, grayscale values, and spaces taught me a lot about how to create the most suitable level for players to play fluently physically and mentally.
This conference made me change my point of view about planning a scene. Interior Design is now something that I am getting deeper into thanks to the blog and T.V. shows mr Cox presents at the end of his talks like MGTV or Decor8.

Domjan, B., 2020.  3D Environment Breakdown: The Croft Antiques Shop   [Online] 80 levels. Available at: <https://80.lv/articles/3d-environment-breakdown-the-croft-antiques-shop/> [Accessed 12 November 2021].
In this article, Balazs Domjan, previously environment and asset artist at guerilla games in the Netherlands, the freelance artist talk about is award-winning: The antic Croft shop from which are presented several antique props, mixing fine details and optimized models.
By the use of pre-planned, optimized models and complexes modifications inside zbrush with the extensive utilisation of this software's tool. Domjan managed to find the right balance between a time-efficiency workflow and a precise and accurate texturing and modeling result as AAA blockbuster games would require. A downside of it was the use of several software as well as the deep knowledge he has of it and all of its components.
Thanks to this article, I learned more about what AAA game studio workflow might look like. It also showed me how using a wide array of software and techniques was necessary for a specialized artist to gain, actions after actions, an essential amount of time at the end of the line for a AAA game production.

Game Developer Redaction Team, 2021.  How A.I. Upscaling Can Help Remaster Game Art. [Online] gamedeveloper Available at: <https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/how-ai-upscaling-can-help-remaster-game-art> [Accessed 15 October 2021].
This article from the overall Staff of the Website "Game Developer" explains why Upscaling Texture technology is essential in modern A.A.A. games. What type of Upscaling technologies exist and for which contest, and how it works behind the scenes.
On the one hand, technology like UpscalingAI increases texture quality from old games. Most of the time to create a Remaster version more graphically qualitative. Here the authors are taking the example of Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
On the other hand, DLSS(Deep Learning Super Sampling) will allow the computer to render only a low resolution and optimized version of the game in real-time while this Ai will upscale it in real-time.
Both of those technologies use Deep learning A.I. that learn from lots of downgraded then upgraded images to apprehend how to then, reproduce the process by itself.
This article was interesting to me because game artists must also possess technical knowledge and know in advance what technology exists and how it allows one to create more or less detailed textures.

Hall, L., 2019.  Environmental Narrative: Telling Stories in Spaces Without Saying Anything Aloud. [Video] GDC Youtube channel. Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXZTz3oR30A> [Accessed 4 December 2021].
With this talk, Laura E dives into the different lessons she learned as a game designer in escape games to create great narratives and storytelling in her own work without using any words.
The author first reminds us that in environmental narration for games or ludic medium overall, we should avoid using text as much as possible. Indeed, as the player is constantly under stress, the latter will never have both the time and willingness to read a long text. Hence the importance of telling a story through the environment directly.
She emphasizes her argument based on all the feedback she received from players throughout her career. As well as with the example of the Invisible gorilla experimentation.
But, on the other side, the lecturer reminds some rules not to overload the player with superficial information, such as not giving false clues about the story. Suppressing any unnecessary element is also an excellent way to avoid superficial informations or out-of-context ones.
Possessing the awareness of what the player will understand without too much difficulty under a particular setting of stress is also an important skill to master. For instance, avoiding text is what she called: "avoiding frictions" that will put the player out of the game's flow and lose their focus.
This article helped me a lot while preparing my future projects as it helps me understand what technique I can use to emphasize a story in a short and moving cinematic as will be my final project.

Hosking, C., 2017. Level Design Workshop: Architecture in Level Design . [Video] GDC Youtube channel. Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW7KvppTspc> [Accessed 10 December 2021].
Throughout her conference, the architect Claire Hosking discusses how architecture can be a valuable resource for level designers in their work and how it can emphasize emotions, gameplay, and game art overall.
The author mainly focuses on how to use instinctive people's behavior in space to help guidance and gameplay of a level. Here, she uses the topology of cities to bring four main composition points to stay aware during level creation: space, circulation, psychological conflict, visual interest.
Here, she takes the example of the 1979 book "the social life of small urban spaces" from the urbanist William H Whyte to present the psychology of circulating in positive (organized) space and negative (erratic) space. From this point on, she will then use the example of current video games, like the suburb area in "The last of us". Indeed, The negative space presented in the level acts here as a repealer to the player who feels unease and wants to leave.
Another interesting comparison is made between the Bruder Klaus Chapel of Peter Zumthor. The lack of religious indications and the use of only strange shapes, warm materials, and light have, for a result, to attract the viewer. The principle is the same in the game "Journey" where the mountain visible in the far distance in any level guides the player through their quest.
This article was informative to me as it completes the previous article I read on the subject. The principle of simple shape in architecture was something I had not thought about before in order to create better level and composition in my scenes

Jones, J.B., Christian, 2020. "I Harbour Strong Feelings for Tali Despite Her Being a Fictional Character": Investigating Videogame Players' Emotional Attachments to Non-Player Characters. [Online] gamestudies.org Available at: <http://gamestudies.org/2001/articles/burgessjones> [Accessed 22 October 2021].
This academic article by Jacqueline Burgess and Christian Jones explains in great depth the characteristics that make a player get attached emotionally to a Non-Playable Character "N.P.C.".
The publication features the example of two popular non-playable characters in the video game "Mass Effect" from Bioware: Tali and Garrus. The study is based on forum threads and discussions written on the official video game website. The use of specific keywords and the way characters are described was used to determine the result of the research.
Three main points were figured out in terms of the research regarding why those two specific characters stand out of other N.P.C—firstly, related to the capability of logical and meaningful responsiveness of that character depending on the player choices and actions. The second point is about the deepness and exploration of the character's personal life through choice-based dialogues. Finally, both characters remain present in each trilogy game and the possibility of emotional and romantic relationship development was a critical factor in creating a deep connection to the player, even more, when the relationship is one from a romantic nature.
Even if I am an environment artist, knowing the factors that create a relationship between virtual entities (as could be a place or environment) to a player is something exciting to me.

Kirill Tokarev (2018). The Purpose of CGI and "Emotional Realism." [online] Available at: https://80.lv/articles/the-purpose-of-cgi-and-emotional-realism/ [Accessed 12 Dec. 2021].
In this article, The editor-in-chief Kirill Tokarev of the website 80.lv emphasize the fact that human mostly talk stories about their own species as we only know our way of living and societies constructions, and even when we try to apply this principle to other alien or exotic species, we gave them humanoid attributes and behaviors
Through this point of view, the author argues that the Computer Generated Images industry or (CGI) has for the implicit role to take fictive images and make them as real as possible through this human behavior and realism. Moreover, general technological advancement helps day after day to create more realistic images in a decreasing amount of time and with more friendly-users tools, accessible to everyone.
Nonetheless, because of that accessibility, Kirill Tokarev put into light the fact that, often, modern artists get overwhelmed by this and create perfect artwork with no imperfection or wear-off details. Here, he explained the word "Emotional Realism" as the practice to add more flaws, scratches, imperfections, and personality to art pieces to make them feel more natural and personalized, as if it was the reflection of the artist's human nature.
I appreciated this article a lot as it was one of the rare that was really emphasizing the philosophy of art and clearly putting forward the limits of our industry in terms of realism and the basic skills we need to stay aware of in this perpetual evolving industry.

Pérez-Latorre ,O., 2019.  Post-apocalyptic Games, Heroism and the Great Recession."  [Online] gamestudies.org Available at: <http://gamestudies.org/1903/articles/perezlatorre> [Accessed 29 October 2021].
The academic source written by Óliver Pérez-Latorre discusses how social and real-life events throughout history have influenced entertainment-based products and, more specifically, video game narration.
The article firstly emphasizes how historical events such as World War II or the great recession influenced creators to make post-apocalyptic-based narratives in different mediums. Notably due to fear and anxiousness of the population toward those events.
It explained that video games, in this case, remain "safe places" where those fears and tensions can be dealt with without any harm being caused to one.
Then the article uses video games such as Horizon Zero Dawn, The walking dead, and Fallout 4 to describe three common characteristics that made these games successful.
First is the representation of the strong and independent survivor man that the player can relate too, then the "come-back" to nature to build back the society in a "purer" way. Finally, the creation of communities and values while fighting an over-demonized "Other".
The article was fascinating to me about how the use of environmental narration and theme based on real-world fears and events allow to create thrilling environment. Also, as we go through an epidemic covid era, this article made me reflect on the opportunity that could be game-based on that.

Sanders, G.,2020 .  Between Tech and Art: The Vegetation of Horizon Zero Dawn. [Video] GDC Youtube channel. Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wavnKZNSYqU> [Accessed 5 November 2021].
In this GDC talk, Gilbert Sanders, principal artist at guerilla games tells us about the creative and optimization journey the studio must have passed through to find the balance between performance and aesthetic, detailed and accurate representation of foliage in their game: Horizon zero dawn. Several parameters were considered, such as procedural and realistic vegetation placement, wind simulation, and season simulator, all of that in a resource-saving manner. Among solutions found by the studio, Low-resolution Gradient maps for colorization, Vertex color shader for wind simulation, L.O.D. Authoring (level of details) models and mipmaps texture lowering with camera distance ended up being the most efficient one in the long term.
The knowledge I acquired through this GDC talk might help me in the future to create more optimized vegetation assets and, thus, a larger quantity of foliage in my scene. As those are still not supported by the Nanite system in unreal engine 5, they still require optimization.

Newnham Campus Food Hall in Toronto
26 Nov 2021
Design: Taylor Smyth Architects
Location: Seneca College, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Newnham Campus Food Hall, Seneca College
Located at the heart of Seneca College’s Newnham Campus, this complex renovation and addition project converted a traditional destination college cafeteria and small food court into a dynamic light filled Food Hall and central gathering space, doubling the size of the existing cafeteria through new construction and a reconfiguration of existing spaces.
The existing campus is defined by a series of buildings connected by a common corridor that originally terminated at a traditional student cafeteria.
The corridor was redirected through the old cafeteria to create a lively pedestrian street lined with food stations, a variety of flexible seating options, including banquette seating, and flexible public gathering spaces that can also serve as small event spaces for art shows, buskers, art exhibits, etc.
The 35,000 sq. ft. project includes a 6,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose Dining Hall addition that defines and offers expansive views of a newly created landscaped Quad, and which features a generous south facing covered outdoor terrace.
The new Dining Hall, equipped with two large projection screens, motorized blinds, full AV media capability, and a large format LED screen, provides Seneca with a multi-purpose space on a scale not offered elsewhere on the Campus.
The new Food Hall offers students a wide selection of healthy food options from five large food stations, and a freestanding market selling fruits, vegetables, fresh and frozen food options, and a myriad of other products. The stations include new state-of-the-art kitchen equipment designed to respond to changing food tastes over time, without the need to make further major equipment changes. New electronic Point of Sale stations offer today’s mobile students a variety of ways to order and pay for their food.

My Top Ten True Crime Podcasts
I spend a lot of time on a computer, so I always need something to fill the silences. Since I am not much of a music person, I listen to a lot of podcasts. Currently, many of my favorite podcasts are true crime, which is definitely not for everyone, but I enjoy the psychology behind it. Since I spend so much of my time listening to these podcasts, I though I would share them with you. In no particular order, here are my favorites.
Serial
Creator: This American Life
Episodes: 23 over two seasons
Episode Length: 1 hour or less
"Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story—a true story—over the course of a season. Each season, we follow a plot and characters wherever they take us. We won’t know what happens at the end until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we bring you the next chapter in the story, so it's important to listen to the episodes in order. Serial has won several awards, including the Peabody, Edward R. Murrow, duPont-Columbia, Scripps Howard, and Silver Gavel Award for Media and the Arts. Serial, like This American Life, is produced in collaboration with WBEZ Chicago."
  S-Town
Creator: Serial and This American Life
Episodes: 7
Episode Length: ~1 hour
"S-Town is a new podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, and the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life. Brian, a longtime This American Life producer, started reporting this story more than three years ago, when he got an email from John with the subject line “John B McLemore lives in Shittown Alabama.” S-Town is part of Serial Productions, a production company from Serial and This American Life."
 Accused
Creator: Wondery
Episodes: 20 over two seasons
Episode Length: Less than 1 hour
"Season 1: When Elizabeth Andes was found murdered in her Ohio apartment in 1978, police and prosecutors decided within hours it was an open-and-shut case. Two juries disagreed. The Cincinnati Enquirer investigates: Was the right guy charged, or did a killer walk free?"
Up and Vanished
Creator: Payne Linsey of Tenderfoot TV
Episodes: 66
Episode Length: Less than 1 hour
"Atlanta filmmaker Payne Lindsey of Tenderfoot TV originally envisioned Up and Vanished as a true-crime documentary. Lindsey selected a missing-person case from his home state, Georgia, and embarked on a journey as an amateur investigator. After starting his research and initial interviews, he decided to present the project in audio form as a podcast. Season 1 of Up and Vanished explored the 2005 disappearance of beauty queen and high school teacher Tara Grinstead from her home in Ocilla, Georgia. The cold case was the largest case file in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s history, with no arrests in 11 years. The podcast quickly drew attention, both in South Georgia and nationwide. Reviewing old leads and uncovering new ones, Up and Vanished quickly expanded from a planned six-episode season to a final count of 24 episodes with numerous bonus episodes. As the people of Ocilla began talking about the case again, new leads and stories emerged. In February 2017, the GBI arrested two suspects for Grinstead’s murder. Up and Vanished will continue to provide updates on this no-longer-cold case as the criminal trial proceeds in 2018. A second season of Up and Vanished, covering a completely different true crime story, will debut on August 20, 2018."
Atlanta Monster
Creator: The producers of of Up and Vanished, Tenderfoot TV, and HowStuffWorks
Episodes: 19
Episode Length:  Less than 1 hour
"From the producers of Up and Vanished, Tenderfoot TV and HowStuffWorks present, ‘Atlanta Monster.’ This true crime podcast tells the story of one of the city’s darkest secrets, The Atlanta Child Murders. Nearly 40 years after these horrific crimes, many questions still remain. Host Payne Lindsey aims to find truth and provide closure, reexamining the disappearance and murder of over 25 African American children and young adults."
Serial Killers
Creator: Parcast
Episodes: 78
Episode Length: ~1 hour
"Serial Killers takes a psychological and entertaining approach to provide a rare glimpse into the mind, methods and madness of the most notorious serial killers with the hopes of better understanding their psychological profile. With the help of real recordings and voice actors, we delve deep into their lives and stories."
Someone Knows Something
Creator: CBC Radio
Episodes: 34 over four seasons
Episode Length: From 10 minutes to over 1 hour
"Someone Knows Something is a podcast by Canadian award-winning filmmaker and writer David Ridgen, first released in March 2016. The series is hosted, written and produced by Ridgen and mixed by Cesil Fernandes. Using investigative journalism, Ridgen narrates a nonfiction story about a criminal cold case over multiple episodes. Episodes are released on a weekly basis; most of the Season 1 episodes ranged from 15 to 40 minutes in length, with Season 2 episodes ranging between 32 and 80 minutes in length. Season 3 was released in November of 2017. Season 4 began in February of 2018. Someone Knows Something is Ridgen's first podcast experience; it is also CBC Radio's first true-crime podcast. Episodes of Someone Knows Something are also sometimes broadcast on CBC Radio One as substitute programming, such as on public holidays and during the summer when some of its regular shows are on hiatus."
Missing & Murdered
Creator: CBC Radio
Episodes: 18 over 2 seasons
Episode Length: ~1 hour
"Connie Walker is a senior investigative reporter whose most recent work focuses on unsolved cases and root causes of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.  She was nominated 'Best Host in a Web Program or Series' by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television in 2018 for her work on Missing & Murdered: Who Killed Alberta Williams?, and in 2017 received a YWCA Women of Distinction Award.  Walker's work on the first season of Missing & Murdered was also nominated for a 2017 Webby Award for best podcast, and received the RTDNA's Adrienne Clarkson Award.  Walker is Cree, from the Okanese First Nation, in Saskatchewan. She lives with her family in Toronto."
Hollywood & Crime
Creator: Wondery
Episodes: 39 over 3 seasons
Episode Length: ~30 minutes
"Hollywood and Crime is a ground-breaking true crime series about the most infamous murders in Tinseltown history. In our twenty-six episode series opener, The Black Dahlia Serial Killers, host Tracy Pattin investigates the sensational unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short. Known as the Black Dahlia, Short was a star-struck young woman whose body was found completely severed at the waist in January 1947. Many remember her tragic story, yet few know that more than a dozen other women died in similar circumstances around that same time."
Dirty John
Creator: Wondery
Episodes: 8
Episode Length: ~40 minutes
"Debra Newell is a successful interior designer. She meets John Meehan, a handsome man who seems to check all the boxes: attentive, available, just back from a year in Iraq with Doctors Without Borders. But her family doesn’t like John, and they get entangled in an increasingly complex web of love, deception, forgiveness, denial, and ultimately, survival. Reported and hosted by Christopher Goffard from the L.A. Times."
If you have any interest in true crime, or are looking to break into the world of podcasts, I would definitely recommend starting somewhere on this list. Without many of these podcasts, I think I would have lost my wits long ago!
What are some of your favorite podcasts or genres? Have you listened to any of the ones previously mentioned? Would you add anything to this list?
Thanks for droppin' in!
