Danny Phantom ghost things i'd want in a hypothetical reboot

so like the rest of the fandom, i've had my own ideas for cool ways Danny's ghost powers could operate fermenting for over a decade. not all of these are wholly original-- i'm sure they've been influenced by a bunch of other fanworks over the years. but while it'll (probably) never happen, i'd love to see them depicted in shiny, professional animation

ghosts are ideas, manifested. their appearance and powers are all directly linked to the shape and powers of that idea.

when Danny first turned, his 'ghost form' was barely anything at all. wispy, insubstantial. he was still weak from his [near] death experience, confused and scared, and these moments where he's apparently lose all visibility and corporeality were as confusing as they were terrifying, creating an awful negative feedback loop

Gradually, as Danny came to understand and anticipate these ghostly transformations, his form solidified. by the time the show starts, his ghost form is basically identical to his normal human form, just with the expected palette swap

Danny starts to realise his body is malleable in that form, and experiments a bit. mostly with realising he turn his legs into a wispy tail to go faster, or maybe changing his body for a goof

but there are subtler, gradual changes.

as Danny becomes more confident with his Phantom persona, as it becomes a genuine alter-ego, Phantom's appearance changes.

Phantom's a little taller. A little more muscular. His jaw a little more chiseled. His hair goes from "mundane dishevelment" to "anime protagonist spikiness".

these changes are gradual, maybe a single tweak to the character design per episode. enough that by episode 13 or so, if you were to put images of Fenton and Phantom side-by-side, you'd realise they were no longer just palette swaps

unfortunately, there are downsides to this ghostly nature

Danny's ghost form (and sometimes even his human form) is directly linked to his mental state.

if Danny's insecure? Phantom can become weak and insubstantial. Scared? Small and childlike. And if he's angry? Well...

Twisted claws for fingers, teeth contorting into fangs, strange waving tentacles emanating from his body...

Maybe there's a reason people don't recognise Phantom as human. Let alone as that Fenton kid from down the street.

sometimes, though. someone swears they'll see Danny Fenton's eyes flash green in the darkness. just for a moment.

being a ghost isn't just cool super powers. have it be, in a very real way, eldritch.

Headcannon: All ghosts are slightly eldritch. The more scary a ghost is, the more powerful a ghost is.

Side note: yes, I know this isn't 100% supported in canon. I like it though.

The weaker a ghost is, the less it can be distinguished from what it was when alive. The weakest ghosts have sort of an uncanny valley vibe. Johnny 13may not be human, but when a person sees him, their minds try to fit him into the human mold.

Certain ghosts like Amorpho and Spectra can 'fake' humanity pretty well for a while. But it's not perfect, and so they have to mess with people's senses and emotions to keep the illusion going for very long.

It's also (part of) why people just don't like Vlad or Danny. (I mean, Vlad's hot garbage as well, so that's another reason). Halfas just set off all the uncanny valley vibes in human form. The average human is going to go: Something is Very Wrong when they're confronted by the way their appearances change, just a little, based on emotions or their way-too-white sharp teeth.

It's even worse in ghost form/as a ghost because they're not really supposed to be in our dimension. So then what do we see? Our brains try to piece things together in a way that makes sense to us, but frequently our wires get crossed. Sometimes those wires change position, causing the ghosts to look like they're changing constantly.

When Danny goes through Ghost Puberty, he gets a second, scarier ghost form. He cannot show that second form to a human for very long at one time- low exposure over short periods of time is way better. He has 3- his human form, what people think his ghost looks like (friendly kid), and Eldritch Abomination.

Clockwork, Pandora, and other Ancients can't set foot into our reality for long periods of time, especially around humans, because just their appearance will mess with people.

The reason a lot of (legitimate) ghost hunters go crazy is because they've looked at their targets one too many times.

Even the sounds ghosts make go through the brain filter. Vlad doesn't just use an army of lawyers and PR people for fun- he uses them because even in human form, his voice is 2 steps to the left of human, and the longer people listen, the more theu freak out.

This is the opposite from Ember, as she's basically a land siren. But a deaf/hard of hearing person would have NO idea why their buddy was vibing to a literal fire monster on stage. Her voice adjusts human perception.

Kitty makes you love her- even as you fear the horrible monster, your love grows just as much.

People don't like hearing the pops and cracks in Danny's voice. There's something wrong, like hearing a voice in radio static, or feeling sounds the human ear can't pick up.

Side note on Vlad: Amity Park is one of the only places he COULD have won an election, because Amity Parkers have constant, low-level exposure. This causes them to go: hmm, something might be up with the mayor. Must be a cold. Instead of: our mayor is Something Not Human.

Amity Parkers- in particular the mayor's secretary, the Fenton Family, and Sam & Tucker- have a certain amount of immunity to fear attacks. I think if Jazz goes to Gotham and Scarecrow fear gasses her, he's going to have a Very Bad Night, because Jazz eats breakfast and dinner, and sleeps in a room across from an existential horror every day.

At best, Fear Toxin would put her into fight or flight mode- and this girl takes out ghosts that can level buildings. Crane would be in the ER before his transfer to Arkham.

as a neurodivergent person, i literally can’t write if the vibes of what i’m listening to isn’t on point, so i thought i’d share a few of my fandom playlists down below! some of them are specific to fics, others are certain relationships, some are purely vibes. i’ve included links to all of them, just click on the title. welcome to the chaos that is my mind

there was an idea

this one is just vibes tm. songs that i listen to when i’m picturing fights or action. i named it after the avengers because i liked the way it sounded, and i generally like the mcu’s music choices.

it's angst hours baby

these songs just put me in the mood to ruin someone's life.

ethereally eldritch

this one’s still under pretty heavy construction, but when it’s finished i want it to be a Danny Phantom inspired playlist that’s a bit spooky. i’m going for grungy, spooky, punk vibes.

i've learned to love falling

this one is a Dick Grayson character playlist. i just wanted to add some songs that remind me of him/his vibes. think abba, Britney Spears, and a little bit of punk pop.

i'm the most cutest girl in the world

a Paulina Sanchez playlist!!! i love her so much and i realized i didn't have many 'bad bitch' playlists, so it felt fitting. this is a lot of female artists, mostly pop and rap. however, i have thought about adding some 'bubblegrunge.' thoughts?

i’ve been bamboozled (into loving you)

an Anger Management (Jazz Fenton/Jason Todd) playlist <3 basically a lot of the songs that remind me of their relationship or that i think fit their vibes.

👑Space Princess💫

a Space Princess (Dani Phantom/Mar’i Grayson) playlist, because i am so soft for them. it’s a soft sapphic playlist that’s just as lovely as my favorite girls

🏹Trick Shot💘

i will admit, this one started off as Dani Phantom/Lian Harper, but at some point became more of a sapphic modern disco playlist. it still have light, fun vibes that i associate with them though.

👑 Crowns & Clowns 💗

now we’re getting into the fic specific playlists. this playlist is a BIG spoiler for my fic “The Princess and the Outlaws” so listen at your own risk. basically all the chapter titles for that fic are different Taylor Swift songs and they’re on that playlist. past those songs, we get into more vibes territory. this playlist in particular has a few different sections since it deals with the polycule Jazz Fenton/Jason Todd/Roy Harper/Koriand’r. the first section being chapter titles obviously, the next being songs about their relationship, then songs they would sing to/about their partners, then a girl power section because Kori and Jazz kick ass, and lastly non-romantic songs that give off their group vibes.

Blush Bobbin

this playlist is specifically for my fic "hitting pitch black streets with pink clad heart beats." it's mostly Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, and Matt Maeson right now, but i want to add some more to it eventually. fun fact, i named the playlist that because a group of robins can be called a Blush or a Bobbin, among other things.

Bellflower Manor

this playlist goes along with a fic i'm cowriting called "Brides, Birds, and Batshit Family Matters." if you know, you know.

forgotten kids

this is a grungier Dani/Lian playlist for a fic i'm planning "Urban Legends are Warnings from the Dead." it's meant to be a bit spooky, a bit grungy, a bit hopeful---because what is Gotham if not full of hope?

Gotham Academy

this playlist is also specific to my fic “Wisteria” which is a dp/dc dark academia au. it’s a mixture between dark academia, dark forest, investigation, spooky, magical, grungy, gay vibes. it’s doing a lot right now, and i might go back and edit it sometime some.

this. playlist. okay, so it’s specific to the dp/dc leverage au i’m working on but bare with me. it’s punk, punk pop, angry feminine, anti-hero vibes. it’s about manipulation and being alluring, and falling in love somewhere along the way. i rather like this one as you can tell lol.

so, this playlist was actually made for a fic i started a long time ago “See the Light.” i’m not currently working on it, but i really like the concept so i’ll probably revisit it one day. it’s alternative, dark vibes, very much so focusing on the dark parts of the fic. it’s probably one of my favorite playlists i’ve every made, the songs just hit in or out of context.

this playlist was made specifically for my very indulgent Batfam/Charmed (1998) au. it’s based on the main pairing of the fic, Dick Grayson/Melinda Halliwell. it’s a lot of love songs, pinning and accidently falling in love vibes, as well as a generous amount of ABBA.

Guardian Spirit au

Danny is a Guardian Spirit, except Guardian Spirits in this au are truly terrifying.

They focus a lot more on the guarding aspect of being a Guardian Spirit then being comforting or approachable, so they look terrifying. Like a massive chimera of different animals and eldritch abomination looking stuff.

Guardian Spirits are generally some of the most powerful ghosts and most ghosts know not to mess with them unless you want to have a second funeral. They are also usually mistaken to be demons and malevolent spirits by humans even though they just want to guard the thing they are guarding and be left alone.

Appearances are deceiving in this case bc even though Guardian Spirits look terrifying as heck they are usually pretty docile and kind as long as you dont try to hurt/take the thing they are guarding.

For example Pandora is a Guardian Spirit, most Guardian Spirits are animalistic in appearance with Pandora being one of the few exceptions (though that doesnt mean they have less sentience or intelligence, they just look like animals and can usually talk as well)

Anyway back to Danny, because of the nature of his creation and of course his obsession his ghost half ends up being a Guardian Spirit. Unfortunately he drew the short end of the stick and instead of looking vaguely human in his ghost form like Pandora he looks absolutely terrifying.

He's about the size of a two story building (maybe a little bigger). He has huge feathery wings, a scorpion tail, is four legged with bird feet with sharp talons, has thick white fur all over the rest of his body, and of course he has an elk skull as a head. His eyes are still glowing green but it's just the iris and pupil, the selera is pitch black in the sunken eyes of the skull.

Thankfully he only looks like that in ghost form. Not so thankfully this monstrous appearance obviously doesn't help disprove his parents claim that all ghosts are emotionless monsters that need to be eradicated.

Protecting Amity park is easier in this au since most ghosts take one look at Danny's ghost form and just nope out of there. The exceptions being Skulker (who wants to catch Danny even more because he is a halfa AND a guardian spirit) and Box ghost who is just stupid about not angering incredibly powerful being.

Danny goes through an angsty faze of "am I a monster?" But his friends and soon his sister pull him out of that and when they meet Pandora and they find out that Danny is a Guardian Spirit the boy accepts and is happy with this part of himself.

The main threat to Danny in this au are his parents and the GIW since of course a giant ghost monster that appears from nowhere and disappears seemingly into thin air attracts more attention and seems like a bigger threat.

Meanwhile Danny is just trying to get by. Sometimes he goes through partial transformations that are troublesome to deal with without anyone noticing (these include: scorpion tail, the wings, having the top of the elk skull appear on his face sort of like a mask he can take that one off of his face and it dissipates but the other ones are actually part of his body)

In this au he meets other Guardian Spirits (tho Pandora is basically like his unofficial mentor/mom), has to avoid the GIW and his parents, has to try and convince the town that the scary looking huge chimera is NOT going to hurt anyone, and also deal with Vlad trying to capture him to work for him like his vultures do (Vlad has no idea Danny is the Guardian Spirit in this au, he is increasingly annoyed that this Guardian Spirit keeps foiling his plans to kill Jack)

Also I might throw in some Ghost king Danny just because I think Guardian Spirit!Danny would beat Pariah Darks ass. Plus the image of a crown that looks so tiny in comparison with Danny's huge elk skull head is just hilarious (tho I'd probably have it so the crown of fire changes based on the king so it would probably change to be big and intimidating to fit on Danny's ghost form's head, but change to a normal size whenever he changes back to human)

The partial transformations are caused bc Danny has to transform into his ghost form at least every few days or else it starts transforming on it's own so yeah Danny can't have his ghost form lay low even if there arent any ghosts attacking Amity.
