And what of Venice? Where did you get that sexy boat with the orange seats?

Venetians are people of the water. That's how the whole empire was born; they’re traders on the spice route. So they have an amazing affinity with water, down to jumping on a boat as your taxi. It was a friend of Tom’s that had just gotten this new boat and he brought it to my attention, because, again, we wanted it to be glamorous. There was a lot of nervousness, because Simon Pegg had to drive it through the canals. He did a very good job. There’s a region called the Arsenale, a sort of military area that’s now a big marina of sorts. We had our workshops and our boats there, and we’d load the props and dressing and camera equipment on barges instead of trucks, that’s just how it works.

Then, there’s Doge’s Palace, the Palazzo Ducale, which is an incredibly popular tourist spot. But they do rent it out for private parties at night like you see in the film, and our locations team basically did that so we could throw a party and film it. It was a race against time each evening, because once they shut the doors on the tourists we would have just a couple hours to prep the location. A particular challenge was all the candles that we placed around the perimeter of the building—Venice as a whole is effectively an ancient monument and it’s been built mostly out of wood, and so we weren’t allowed to use double-wick candles as we wanted. Those are LED candles that we could control with a remote.

The candles were also part of our mission to make Venice have a more sinister quality than Rome; we wanted it to feel almost like a horror movie. That extends to the fight sequence on Ponte Minich, a pedestrian bridge, between [Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust and Esai Morales’s Gabriel]. It’s a lovely bridge during the day, in fact it’s very romantic, but you fill it with fog in the dark and it becomes a place of death. We had to be very quiet because we were shooting through the night and we didn't want to disturb anybody. But in a strange way, the quietness of the crew and the unit just added to the atmosphere. It evoked a sort of quality that would have been difficult to obtain anywhere else. And we were shooting during a very strict COVID protocol era. We had a very unique situation where we were wandering around the streets of Venice that are normally filled with thousands and thousands of paying tourists, and we basically had the streets to ourselves. It was like we were being taken back 200 years.

“Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One” review:

Short review

Really fun action movie that’s bogged down by a questionable plot. I give it a solid letter grade of B. But part of me is also thinking B-/C+.

Long review

Coming off of “Fallout”, while I did enjoy the seventh installment, the plot was a bit disappointing. Part of me wonders if it’s because this movie is a two-parter and we’re not meant to see the entire picture yet, but the other part of me is questioning why this was the story that Cruise and friends went with.

The plot is basically “find key to control big scary computer”. This might as well be an Indiana Jones movie since they treated this key like a long-lost artifact. While this makes for a fun adventure movie, the plot starts falling apart when the movie starts going into the lore behind the key:

1) So apparently, we built an all-powerful AI called “The Entity” which is solely controlled by one key. Yeah, sure.

2) The Entity is this sentient AI that just sorta exists. As the villain of the movie, it’s really hard to be scared by it when the movie isn’t even sure what the villain’s goals are.

3) The AI is written like it’s God or something. The way the main characters talk about the Entity makes it seem like it’s omnipotent. Or Satan himself. In fact, there’s even a goofy ass scene where a bunch of unnamed officials take turns describing the Entity, which made them sound like cultists describing their god. I can’t believe I’m writing this but the “Terminator” movies and “Age of Ultron” had more believable depictions of an all-powerful AI that’s gone rogue.

So, as a villain, the Entity is kinda lame. And I do get why the writers went with an AI villain due to how topical AI is nowadays. I just don’t think this was a good depiction. In fact, as supposed social commentary on the dangers of AI, 1) other movies did it better and 2) it misses the real world consequences of AI, such as loss of jobs and being unable to determine what’s real anymore.

Aside from a questionable villain, there are other aspects of the plot that bothered me:

1) Esai Morales’ villain, Gabriel, was incredibly underdeveloped. I just know that he did something in the past that really affected Ethan. Other than that, he’s just there to be evil.

2) Hayley Atwell is acting her heart out, but her character kinda…sucks? I’m not sure what the writers were going for with Grace. She spends the first half of the movie being a nuisance and then, all of a sudden, she’s forced into becoming an IMF agent. But the thing is, I don’t get why she was treated so important to the story. Yes, she steals the key at the start, but after she loses the key, she loses relevance in the story. It’s like the only reason why Grace stuck around the second half was because Ilsa Faust died and Ethan needed the help of the only other female main character around in order to do an undercover mission. So, while I hate pitting two female main characters against each other, it does feel like Grace is in this movie to be Ilsa’s replacement, because she doesn’t have much relevance to the story after she loses the key. Speaking of Ilsa…

3) Ilsa Faust was 100% fridged. I’m actually fine with characters dying for the plot, but the way Ilsa’s death was handled left a bad taste in your mouth. Unless she actually faked her death for the 100th time, Ilsa dying felt like a step back. And if she was killed off to make room for Grace, then that’s another point deduction to the movie.

Now, there was a lot that I did enjoy. I liked Pom Klementieff’s character (also, how goofy is it that her character is a French assassin named Paris) and I wish she had a bigger role. It was nice seeing Kittredge again since the last time we saw him was MI1. Tom Cruise is working his fucking ass off and is still putting on a great show. And, of course, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are always a ton of fun in these movies.

That being said, it’s hard to look past the questionable plot choices. So, even though the movie was a ton of fun, it’s a bit of a step back for me. “Fallout” and “Rogue Nation” definitely feel like that’s where the franchise peaked. But, despite all my criticism, I am looking forward to Part Two. Hopefully, Part Two is where I’ll be sold on the plot.

Yeah they did all live under the same roof and the same room because this version of the Merry Men are basically a thieves guild but I forgot to specify that each one of the kids have separate adoptive mothers that are all genderbent members of the Merry Men gang. Gillian Gysbourne who I made alongside my character’s mothers was taken in by Big Joan (genderbent Little John) Katharina Lamelin was taken in by Alana Adell (genderbent Alan-a-Dale) and Esai was taken in by Billie Scathelocke (genderbent Will Scarlett)

This one is Zarek a Warforged Paladin taken in by Cleric Till (genderbent Friar Tuck). Zarek is based on the story of King Midas specifically King Midas’ daughter who he turns to gold when she hugs him. In this version Zarek doesn't die when turned to gold he is still alive and able to move. Originally he was a human but due to the magic of being a man turned to gold he acts similarly to a warforged. After being turned to gold he ran away from his kingdom and ended up running into the Merry Men. He's the oldest of all the other kids being 18 when recruited while most of the others were around 8 or 9 when recruited and by the events of BG3 he’d be 29. He was also 18 when turned to gold and has looked 18 ever since not being able to age.

Also since there’s no option to actually make a character gold in BG3 I just had to give a rough idea of how he looks.

Also you’re right to see similarities in Robyn Hood and Jaheria because I immediately caught that after going to her house in Baldur’s Gate. Both blonde, both wear green, both are folk heroes, both have adopted kids. My Tav would probably be very close to Jaheria due to how much she reminds him of his mom. I don’t think he’d ever tell Jaheria why he’s so close to her though at least not unprompted.

OKAY lemme be a nerd for a moment so.

Idk shit about electronics but I was researching stuff about computers the other day out of curiosity and I've always wondered why do they use so much gold in them?

Long long rant below about gold as a conductor and warforged in general

Let's start with the fact most warforged are made! For one to appear naturally like yours is very unique experience, so much I can't even think of another situation where a warforged is just born into the world without an inventor.

And since warforged are made, they're really really fucking expensive. Much like a decent pc in today's standard would cost around 1000$ just to meet the minimum requirements for most games and softwares. And even those ones are quickly degerading, especially since Windows 11 rolled around, most of the low end pcs don't meet the requirements to update to it.

Imagine how expensive a warforged would be? Probably ten times as that just for a low end one. So to lower the cost people use copper wiring, switches and connectors.

There is also silver an aluminium but copper has the best rounded out stats for its price.

Then comes gold, which literally sweeps the floor with all the other competition. Gold is so much superior as a conductor in electronics that even just plating things with a thin gold layer helps in improving them and allowing for more electrons to pass through faster.

But it's expensive, crazy expensive which is why it's literally unimaginable for someone to make a warforged out of gold, that's Nasa space computer level budget.

Everyone except for Zarek, who was handed his literal own weight in gold.

Other reasons why Gold is superior in electronics

It doesn't oxidise (or only does very very veryyyyy slowly) and there is no fear or tarnish or rusting! Literally a warforged worst ever enemy. Gold isn't reactive either so there is no fear of it mixing with chemicals. It is a noble metal! Which means any alchemist or evil witch throwing potions your way would probably have zero effects.

It's extremely easy to mould and work with. Gold can be recycled, and there are so many gold jewellers across the globe who specialise in working with it. A warforged made out of gold would have an easier time finding a smith or jeweller willing to fix them up! Plus, it allows for a lot of decorative opportunities since gold can be moulded into any shape and isn't brittle , nor does it break easily. (Gold purple exists too, a naturally purple gold, but it is extremely brittle, so ignore it)

AMAZING CONDUCTIVITY, i can't even stress this enough. Your warforged would be running at 240hz with a 4x64GB RAM in comparison to your every day to day warforged.

And making him based on that fairytale concept is such a good backstory? Fuck that's a beautiful fully closed loop that I'm adorning. This is just a great character concept 10/10

Also I really like the make up! It was the first thing I noticed before reading the ask. Now I know it's just supposed to resemble gold but still.

If you ever play on pc or with mods, there are multiple skin colours ones that can make him glossy and metalic gold yellow!

Idk if this was intended, but the name Zarek is also an arabic word

Side note: Sol would literally be so obsessed with a gold made warforged. Gold in general is the love of their love so making a living being out of it is like winning the jackpot. If their bad ending ever happens, Zarek is on top of the lists of people they plan to kidnap and keep in their dragon hoard. Zarek better stay away from any flying red dragons who'd wanna snatch him up.

Ohh thanks for the ask! This is tricky and contains some spoilers but I'll stick to characters I've directly introduced. I also am going to throw out the complicated succession and child-claiming contractual nonsense laws to answer this cause it gets a lot more all over the place with that involved.  So for Apricus:

I feel like still in the long run Esai would probably be the best king out of his siblings. He's just the most experienced navigating that world and far less naive about the powers at play than I think Ima would be. Izan is basically clueless when it comes to almost any court formalities because his upbringing was really haphazard compared to Ima and Esai. So for the nobility at least he’d seem like a disaster. For Viridis: You haven't seen much of her but I've mentioned her - Ashra Novari.

Of the three older girls she carries her emotional baggage the most gracefully buuuuuuut because literally everyone in power hates her dad it'll probably never happen.

I agree with you that there will probably be no mission impossible movies withouth tom Cruise as the star. And I honestly dont see how people came to the conclusion that they were setting up hayley atwells character for it. To me her role in the film is to show how they recruite IMF agents. Maybe its because its a two parter and it means she has the only character confirmed to be in more than one movie before her debut. But her character is way too inexperienced even in the first movie ethan had been in the IMF for a while. And now ethans basically the leader of the IMF and I feel like if they were going to replace him they would do it with someone who could step into that leader role as well.

I just honestly don't see anyone doing what Tom does. Even someone with a name recognition, it's basically not to be corny lol impossible. I think Grace might have had a different story but since they had to change the villain from Nick Hoult to Esai Morales (someone younger to someone older who could have a past with Ethan) they decided to tie her to young Ethan sort of type who might come work for the IMF (I agree with your thought that they showed how IMF agents are recruited through her).
