After deciphering the Asterisk code (here) I'm playing New Game+ and just got to this moment. I thought it was a blank page before, but anyway I can read it now!

BRAVELY DEFAULT the first two lines read (I'm excited- this is the first time I've seen the letter Y)

then for some reason I skipped to the fourth line and my heart froze.

w... what the hell is........ WHY IS AIRY'S NAME HERE?!?!?!!! Honestly I was shaking (yes, I get very over invested and over emotional over stories and the mere mention of Airy just-...).

Turns out it says BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY (but the F in "fairy" is mostly erased. They knew exactly what they were doing.) followed by BRAVELY SECOND

Idk if anyone cares, but I'm super happy finding this.

That bad ending #3/Elvis bad ending AU i keep talking about! Desperate to avoid the last two bad endings, he uses the librarian asterisk and gets sucked into the Nexus, confronting what’s left of Inanna (who is way beyond any hope of reasoning with, although he tries.) He manages to overpower the Nexus, and it’s seemingly destroyed in a yellow light - leaving behind only the book, Asterisk now sealed off (and some kind of message on the back page that only Adelle ever sees, for the sads.) However, this is only a temporary seal that lasts as long as Elvis can maintain control and his soul will definitely be overpowered by the Nexus eventually, so in post-credits the remaining gang sets off again to find a way to destroy it for good (and set Elvis’s soul to rest in the process as well.)

...painting, huh. i sure definitely know how to do it and am very consistent about my style!

Elvis is such a ditz, I love it.

I love the JRPG tropes here. Like Obi-wan Kenobi the older retired knight who is protecting a princess/last survivor/important person, and the chancellor who cannot be trusted.

Ooh, found a pocket of nice things: Flame Talisman, Star Pendant, and a couple of consumable items.

Wow I love how strong Sloan is even though he’s supposed to be injured. He’s definitely getting me through these pesky Ochu and Orc battles. With him around, this prologue is like a tutorial level where you can’t really die.

Oh snap, well, I was not expecting that weedy bespectacled chancellor to turn into a physical attacker class like a monk. o_o

And Obi-wan Kenobi Sloan, the guy who was giving off “I’m going to die soon” vibes, did indeed sacrifice himself.

Without Sloan, though, these battles are quite a bit more tedious. I hope this doesn’t continue. I hate RPGs where one random encounter battle can take like 30 minutes.

I might be off the mark because I’m only in Chapter 2, but BDII is making me think about an old B2nd theory I had

So it definitely seems that in BD/BDII, asterisks are predesigned. They already looked and functioned in a certain way when their wielders got hold of them, with some minor tweaks like colour between different people.

But in B2nd, excluding Astrologian and Yokai probably, I’m pretty sure that a) the Empire are the first people to ever use them, and b) they designed them themselves somehow.

In BDII it seems, so far, that people are being handed these things even if they have no prior skills in the field they represent. And in BD it works similarly, the asterisks you get are hundreds of years old, the duchy are just their newest owners. But it’s just way too much of a coincidence for that to be the case in B2nd. They just happened to find an asterisk for controlling cats, and they have a kid with cat in her blood on the team? Or a chef asterisk when they have a master chef-assassin? And Revenant’s asterisk literally gives the party the armour that is his actual body. Even if there were thousands of asterisks in the place they found them, there’s no way that’s a coincidence.

BD never made it 100% clear how the appearance and purpose of the asterisks were designed, but if they work the same in BDII then it does seem likely that B2nd’s were made differently.
