#BerthaBenz, nacida como Bertha Ringer, (Pforzheim, Confederación Germánica, 3 de mayo de 1849 - Ladenburg, 5 de mayo de 1944) fue una #pionera de la #automoción alemana e #inventora de la pastilla de freno para automóviles. Esposa y compañera de negocios del inventor del automóvil, #CarlBenz, quien el 29 de enero de 1886 solicitó la patente n° 37.435 al gobierno alemán para un vehículo motorizado de tres ruedas, llamándolo Benz Patent-Motorwagen. En agosto de 1888 se convirtió en la primera persona en conducir un automóvil a una larga distancia. Al hacerlo, catapultó el invento de su esposo a la fama mundial, consiguiendo para la compañía de ambos las primeras ventas del vehículo. Dos años antes de su matrimonio con Karl, usó parte de su patrimonio para invertir en una compañía constructora de hierro. Al ser soltera fue capaz de hacerlo, pero después del matrimonio con Benz, perdió su poder legal para actuar como una inversora. Karl terminó su proyecto de su primer carruaje sin caballos en diciembre de 1885. A pesar de que su esposa financiara el proceso de desarrollo, y mantendría los derechos de patente en virtud del derecho moderno, como una mujer casada no se le permitió solicitar la patente. En agosto de 1888, sin saberlo su marido y sin permiso de las autoridades, Berta condujo con sus hijos, en el nuevo Benz Patent-Motorwagen desde Mannheim hasta Pforzheim, convirtiéndose en la primera persona en conducir un automóvil una distancia considerable. Bertha recorrió una distancia de ida de unos 106 km. El propósito del viaje era visitar a su madre pero Bertha quería demostrar a su marido, que había dejado de considerar la comercialización de su invención, que el automóvil en el que habían invertido fuertemente, se convertiría en un éxito financiero una vez demostrada su utilidad. En el camino varias personas se asustaron por el automóvil y los relatos del viaje recibieron una gran cantidad de publicidad. The Face of Female Drivers

Female drivers have gotten a bad rap over the years. 

I love to drive and have come from a long line of excellent female drivers (according to the females in my family that is!!) but these great women include my 90-year-old grandmother who recently passed her renewal driver’s test (GO G-MA!).  In a lifetime of almost daily driving my grandmother has never been the cause of an accident and I’m happy to report that that she will continue to be responsibly driving Canada’s highways and byways for at least another two years.  She may even take you on the 401 if you’re not careful ;)

A fun fact for you, female driver role models go back further than 90 years.  Thanks to the Mercedes Benz Canada web site, I can tell you (who I believe was) the first female driver of a gas powered automobile was someone in the Benz family!  Her name is Bertha Benz.

You may be more familiar with her husband, Carl Benz who is largely credited with inventing the car as we know it today.  In 1879, Carl’s patent for a petrol engine was granted.  He followed this up with a patent for the world’s first gas-powered automobile.  Way to go Mr. Benz!

Not only is it likely that Bertha was the first female driver, but she is the first driver to drive long distances.  In 1888 (how many fingers and toes are you counting on now?), Bertha drove the Benz Patent-Motor Wagen to her mother’s house over 100 km away.  This incredible woman overcame many challenges along her route that led to technical improvements, including the development of brake lining.

While Carl Benz may have received patents and invented the machine, it was that fearsome Bertha Benz that led us to some of the greatest advancements in the Benz brand!  Come on, would you want to be the first one to drive 100km in a brand spanking new invention? 

What was a long distance drive in 1888 is a daily commute for many women today... and thanks to Bertha Benz, we have no excuses for not visiting our mothers (see you at Easter mom)
