Was thinking of the "Who will be the sexyman of the SMRPG remake?" debacle and I have some Cursed (tm) sexyman options that haven't really been suggested:

Bowyer (self-explanatory)

Culex (also self-explanatory)

Exor (bc he is hugelarge and also a pathetic little meow meow based on his bestiary entries)

Smithy (a 3-way venn diagram of "People into robots" vs. "People into old men" vs. "People into Santa Claus")

I think it's none of them. Geno has already won it-- he's the shipping bicycle for Mario, Bowser, Vivian, and even Dimentio… and the source of plenty AUs.

I do wish it was Culex tho, he's the most objectively attractive character in the game-- my friend and I even toyed with the idea of Culex x Mario

Although it seems like Yaridovich is the runner up, since he is paired with Jonathan, other Smithy Gang members, or original characters. Hell, whenever I share him with people who haven't played the remake, they go "I like him he's a loser."

And in Japan, I think it's… surprisingly Jonathan, followed by… the clown brothers??? It was a shock to me, given how little the latter end up doing.

Claymorton and Bowyer are less sexyman and more happy meal scrunkly toy.

THE NANNY NAMED LUIGI

CHAPTER II: Airplanes and Early mornings

Koopa Man: This is your pilot speaking. Thank you for flying Air Goomba. We should be arriving at Shadow City International Airport in just under 5 hours. The skies are relatively clear so we expect only a slight amount of turbulence. 

Luigi sighed as he stared out of the airplane window. In just 7 hours he'd be at Bowser's Castle to act as the nanny for the Koopalings and their brother Bowser Junior. He still didn't know how his brother managed to convince him to take the job. Then again he hadn't managed to get a job since he'd been fired by his fiance, so maybe he was just open to any suggestion.  

Goomba Steward: The emergency exits are located there and there. 

The goomba gestured towards the orange colored emergency exits.

The green dressed Mario brother looked around the cabin. 

There were Toads on their way to vacation. 

Business Koopas on their way home. 

Humans who would transfer to a plane headed to the Luncheon Kingdom for a wedding. 

And a few others whose goals varied from migration to a short vacation. 

As the plane's engines revved up, and the fasten seatbelt sign went on, the emerald clad human closed his eyes, hoping to get some sleep before he arrived at his destination. 

The means people used to travel in this world were as diverse as the beings that inhabited it. 

There were cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and hot air balloons. Trams, buses, trains, and blimps. There were planes, ships, koopa copters, and spaceships. There were things I had yet to mention and that most people of our world had yet to imagine. 

But of all the methods used to traverse distances, the most famous was the warp pipe. A technological marvel that could get you from A to B in a fraction of the time it took all but the fastest commercial planes. 

It was, sadly, also the least comfortable, most expensive to build, and hardest to maintain form of transportation. Which is why it was generally only built when money was no option. Such as in certain government buildings so doctors, politicians, military, aid workers, and refugees could easily get to an allied nation or a nearby province. Or temporarily in the case sporting events, or kidnappings. 

Teenage Male Koopa: GIMME THAT!

Much Younger Male Koopa: I'M TELLING DAD!

Bowser woke up like he did every morning to the sound of his children arguing over something. 

Teenage Male Koopa & Slightly Younger Male Koopa: DON'T YOU DARE!!

In this case the argument was between three of his least favorite kids. 

Even Younger Male Koopa: IGGY AND LEMMY ARE FIGHTING AGAIN!

Larry started crying

Bowser: KNOCK IT OFF OR I'M SENDING YOU ALL TO BOARDING SCHOOL ON THE MOON! 

There was a moment of silence before the three brothers started laughing. 

Bowser sighed. 

He knew he wouldn't send them to boarding school, and they knew he wouldn't send them to boarding school, but at least they stopped fighting and that was all he really wanted. 

Bowser got up and looked in the mirror. After a month without Kamek's help, he looked and felt tired. He'd grown a beard, the same shade of red as his mane. Normally he'd shave it, but he felt too tired to even try to. 

He put on a white dress shirt with french cuffs and a spread collar, silver cufflinks shaped like his logo, a navy blazer with gold buttons with his logo on them , Khaki colored dress pants, white socks, brown leather dress shoes, a red silk tie in a half windsor knot, a gold pocket watch, and a forest green shell with white spikes.

Normally he'd just wear a shell and some spiked wristbands, but he had a conference in two days, so he had to get used to dressing up. 

He didn't mind the clothes, in fact they felt quite good, but in his mind he wasn't the type of guy who would wear them. Or wear a beard, or do a lot of things for that matter. 

He looked at his watch. 

Bowser: Three hours till Mario's brother gets here. I hope he lasts longer than the last one.

The king muttered to himself. 

Somewhere in the skies near the coast of the Darklands an Air Goomba plane was preparing to make its final approach to Shadow City International Airport. 

Shyguy Stewardess: Sir, wake up, we're almost at our final destination. 

Luigi: Wuh huh? 

Luigi slowly got up. 

He'd been able to sleep through most of the flight, only waking once to go to the toilet, once to stretch, and once to eat his breakfast. His breakfast consisted of an omelet with fried mushrooms and fire flower, some somewhat stale bread, an assortment of overripe fruit native to the Mushroom kingdom, and some coffee, which he'd been told was a type popular in the Darklands, and was unfortunately the best part of the meal. While it had been a bit too dark for his taste, he still enjoyed it. 

The landing had been uneventful, some passengers had clapped, but that was nothing out of the ordinary.

The lesser known Mario brother thought of his situation as he made his way through the airport. He'd met Bowser only a few times in his life, and couldn't remember the last time they'd exchanged more than a few words. Even after Bowser's wife died a few years ago, he'd only sent him a short letter offering his condolences, and never gotten a reply. And now he was on his way to babysit the man's children. 

He giggled nervously. 

The only time he'd babysat anything was his neighbor's Yoshi, and even that almost went wrong. 

He made his way to Darklands Customs and Border Protection.

Koopa Woman: Passport? 

Luigi showed his passport

Koopa Woman: Business or Pleasure?

Luigi: Business

Koopa Woman: Staying long? 

Luigi: I hope not! 

Koopa Woman: Haven't heard that in a while. 

Luigi chuckled nervously

Koopa Woman: Luigi … Mario? Huh, same last name as Mario Mario. 

Luigi: He's my brother

He smiled proudly. 

The koopa burst into laughter

Koopa Woman: Yeah right! And I'm the queen of the Darklands! 

She regained her composure

Koopa Woman: Regardless everything checks out. Welcome to the Darklands mister Mario. 

The man in green finished going through security, got his luggage, and walked outside, somewhat disheartened by what happened at customs. 

Shyguy Driver: Linguine Mario? Lugini Mario? I'm here for a Loogy Mario! 

Luigi: It's Luigi. 

Shyguy Driver: Can I see your passport ? 

The shyguy looked at it briefly 

Shyguy Driver: Looks good. Ok, get in the car. 

Luigi nodded, and got in the car. 

Shyguy Driver: Lets hope you don't end like the last ones. 

He muttered to himself. 

Time is a funny thing. Seconds can feel like minutes, minutes can feel like hours, hours can feel like days, and days can feel like years. Or in the case of one unfortunate King Bowser, ruler of the Darklands. Hours can feel like Centuries. 

Bowser looked at his watch. 

Bowser: 3 minutes till he's here. 

His children were all waiting in front of the door. 

He'd told them that he'd send them to the moon if they what they did to the last people that babysat them.

Not that it mattered, he was too tired to do anything, let alone punish them if they did what he feared they were going to do to Mario's brother . 

The doorbell rang.

Teenage Female Koopa: Ready! 

A security guard opened the door remotely

Oldest Teenage Male Koopa: Aim! 

The door opened

Second Oldest Teenage Male Koopa: FIRE! 

Bowser: NO! 

Bowser reacted too late. In unison the Koopalings blew scarlet balls of fire at their unfortunate target. 

Iggy: That was number 39! 

The crimson firestorm which wrapped around the figure in the doorway, gave way to emerald and viridian flames, behind which were intense eyes which seemed to burn with lime green fire. 

The mix of red and green fire dissipated as the man dressed in green dusted himself off. 

As he looked around the room, his composure shifted from intense anger to an equally intense nervousness

Luigi: Hello… I'm…

Bowser: The Nanny.

Part 2 of this series and my personal favorite to get in. Toxtricity is a mid-range spacer that abuses large disjointed hitboxes and projectiles to force the opponent to play his game rather than playing around the opponent. When crouching, Toxtricity gets on all fours an gains a very low profile that makes him much harder to hit, and can even crawl around without rising too much. That said, if the opponent can get in, Toxtricity has a fall speed good for comboing and can get killed rather easily if he can’t regain momentum.

Additionally, Toxtricity utilizes his Amped and Low-Key forms as a stance system that he can freely switch between. While Amped, Toxtricity is faster and is capable of racking up quick damage but struggles to kill. While Low-Key, Toxtricity is less mobile and has more startup on his attacks, but kills easier.

Normals

A - Toxtricity burps, a purple cloud popping out from his mouth. If not cancelled, this jab has a lot of endlag.

AAA - Toxtricity burps and then idly scratches at his chest, creating short ranged sparks right in front of him as a rapid jab. To finish, he strums once to launch the opponent, though not particularly far.

>A - Toxtricity swipes with its gangly arms, with a lazy looking backhand-slash-chop.

^A - Toxtricity hunches over slightly and the sparks on its head burst for a moment. A goo launcher that can kill at very high percents.

vA - It whips with its tongue, going forward a full character width. This move pops up but has low knockback, making it a good combo starter.

Dash - A rough and tumble shoulder bash. Obviously not as strong as Ganondorf’s beastly tackle, but with similar mechanics, starting out strong with a good launcher move, and ending weaker with an attack that just pops the opponent into the air slightly.

Grab

A very simple and basic grab, Toxtricity holds the opponent by their collar with one fist cocked back.

Pummel - Jabs the opponent in the face. When Amped, can throw out quite a few of these before having to throw. Low-Key pummels much slower.

Forward Throw - Toxtricity tosses the opponent onto the ground, then sends them flying with a kick.

Backwards Throw - Yanks the opponent back towards himself while sticking his leg out. Kills while Low-Key.

Up Throw - Throws the opponent up onto his back where the sparks across his spine burst up. Amped hits multiple times but doesn’t launch well, where Low-Key hits a single time that can kill at high percents.

Down Throw - Pushes the opponent onto the ground and puts one foot on them, then strums at their chest, creating a shockwave that sends them flying forward, as well as knocking back any other opponents close by.

Aerials

A - Curls up into a ball an spins in the air, the energy across its back bursting up. While Amped this attack multi-hits and drags down. While Low-Key it has a bigger hitbox and knocks the opponent away.

>A - Strums at his chest once, creating a short-ranged soundwave in front of him. Kills at high percents when Low-Key.

<A - Pushes his shoulders back and the energy across his back bursts out. Can kill early while Low-Key, kills at high percents while Amped.

^A - Performs a bicycle kick overhead that launches a strong distance. While Low-Key it launches straight up, while Amped it launches straight back behind Toxtricity.

vA - Stomps down with one foot. Spikes in both forms, though Low-Key’s is stronger.

Smashes

Forward Smash - Toxtricity strums his chest while headbanging, creating a very large circle of sound waves in front of him that goes about as wide as Duck Hunt’s fsmash goes far. While most of the shockwave does low damage for an fsmash, if the headbanging also connects, it deals nearly double the damage and knockback. Amped Toxtricity has quick startup and combos into itself three times before launching. Low-Key Toxtricity takes longer (though still not as long as other big fsmashes like Snake’s or Ganon’s) but only has one hit.

Up Smash - Similar to forward smash, but Toxtricity bends back and strums, sending the shockwaves straight up while pumping his fist rocking the devil horns. Amped hits three times, Low-Key hits once, and the pumping fist is the hitbox that deals extra damage.

Down Smash - Similar to the other two smash attacks, but Toxtricity bends forward straight down and strums while stomping with his forward foot, creating a wide shockwave that hits on either side. Amped hits three times, Low-Key hits once, and the stomping foot is the hitbox that deals extra damage.

Specials

B - Gunk Shot - Toxtricity starts strumming at his chest, charging an attack. The longer he charges, the farther back he leans and the more he gets into his strumming. When the button is pressed again, Toxtricity leans forward, opens his mouth, and shoots out a large wad of toxic, purple gunk. When Amped, the shot is arrow shaped and shoots forward until despawning at a certain distance, able to tear through other projectiles, similar to Wolf’s blaster shot or Hero’s Frizzle. When Low-Key, the shot is a simple orb that flies forward but quickly drops, and when it hits the ground it explodes into a large hitbox that launches hard and kills at high percents. The longer the charge, the more damage, knockback, and distance is added. Both forms are able to shield cancel and store their charges.

>B - Acid Spray - Toxtricity strums once at his chest, sending out a spray of purple droplets. The attack has a wide range, both horizontally and vertically, though the farther away from Toxtricity the more the droplets fall off, and multi-hits as well as inflicting a damage over time condition similar to Joker’s Eiha. While Amped, the spray is aimed slightly downward with a more compact distance between drops, giving it less range but doing more damage, and it does strong shield damage as well. While Low-Key, the spray is aimed straight forward, giving it more distance, but the droplets farther apart, hitting less, and doing less shield damage, but the lingering poison damage is amplified.

^B - Volt Switch - Toxtricity coats his entire body in electricity and shoots upward at a slightly adjustable angle (only just up to a right angle in either direction, no more) that knocks away any opponent that touches him but doesn’t protect from projectiles. Amped travels farther but hits weaker, while the opposite is true for Low-Key. If the button is held, Toxtricity continues flying but curves mid-air to shoot straight back. This makes the move good at edgeguarding, as Toxtricity can fly out and then fly back in without much hassle or leaving himself open. Or, because this move doesn’t put Toxtricity into freefall (though it does eat up his jumps), he can fly out towards the blastzone to try and push the opponent there and then hit them out while self-destructing.

vB - Shift Gear - Toxtricity changes between Amped and Low-Key. There’s very little animation to this attack so it can’t be punished easily. The sparks on Toxtricity’s head can alternate and reveal that they were hiding the other form’s head horns. The warts on his chest sink in and then pop back out in their new arrangement. The changes should be as least obvious as possible but still easily readable from a distance.

Final Smash - G-Max Stun Shock

Toxtricity Gigantamax’s into Giga-Toxtricity, appearing in the background similar to Giga Bowser. He pulls a guitar made of electricity out of the crackling energy on its back and holds it overhead. The player is then given a reticle that they can move left and right across the stage, adjusting Giga-Toxtricity’s aim. When a button is pressed, Giga-Toxtricity swings its guitar down, cleaving through the whole stage and sending anyone he hits flying away before shrinking back down to normal size.

Weekend sees seven shot dead in Chicago and one person each fatally shot in Washington DC and NYC

The US went through another weekend of bloody violence, with fatal shootings and people wounded by gunfire across Chicago, Washington DC and New York City, according to police.

In Chicago, seven people were fatally shot and at least another 53 were left wounded by gunfire, police said. 

That was up from the same period last year, when 43 people were shot, including three who died in gunfire, according to cops.

Last weekend, Chicago had seen 64 people shot, including 13 that were fatals, the Chicago Sun Times reported.  

In Washington DC, a man also was shot dead and at least eight people were wounded when three gunmen were said to have opened fire on a busy street Sunday afternoon. 

Police Chief Peter Newsham called the Columbia Heights daylight shooting ‘brazen’ when the shooters jumped out of a vehicle at the intersection of 14 Street and Spring Rd NW.

The gunfire erupted just before 5.pm on a ‘very, very busy block’ the chief said.

The victims included eight men, including the deceased, and one woman who was shot.

The shooting was attributed to an ongoing dispute between neighborhood groups.

‘It’s ridiculous. It’s absolutely ridiculous that anybody would do that in our community. It’s insane,’ Newsham said.

‘I don’t know what people are thinking if they think they can enter a block and lay down that many rounds. They’re putting everybody in this community in jeopardy.’ 

Police are searching for the suspects, all believed to be men. Two carried long guns and the third a pistol, police said.

‘Everyone should be outraged that in the daytime, when people are frequenting our restaurants, frequenting our businesses, that there could be an attack on a DC street,’ Mayor Muriel Bowser said. 

Meanwhile, in New York City one person was killed and another 10 were wounded over the weekend. The violence ended a week with more than triple the number of shootings than the same period a year earlier, sources told the New York Post.

The survivors included a man holding is 1-year-old son, the Post reported.

The father, Michael Reid, 39, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg on Carlton Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn just before 9.30pm Saturday while holding his baby, police said. 

The baby was not hurt, according to cops.

The fatal shooting, police said, happened outside a bicycle store on Nostrand Avenue, also in Brooklyn, shortly after 4.pm Saturday. 

A 23-year-old victim who suffered a leg and stomach wound was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

LUCY AND LAWRENCE WELK

Synopsis

When Vivian visits, she expects Lucy to fulfill her promise to arrange a date with Lawrence Welk. Lucy doesn't know Welk, so she borrows a wax dummy of the bandleader and convinces nearsighted Vivian to give up her glasses. When the kids secretly convince the real Lawrence Welk to come to dinner, everything ends “wunerful wunerful”!

Guest Cast

Lawrence Welk (Himself) was a musician, accordionist, bandleader, and television impresario, who hosted the television program “The Lawrence Welk Show” from 1951 to 1982 on ABC. His style came to be known to his audiences as ‘champagne music.’  His catchphrase was “wunerful, wunerful” spoken with his slight German accent. Welk's trademarks included his "uh-one, uh-two" song intro and a perpetual bubble machine. He died in 1992 at the age of 89.

Vivian Vance (Vivian Jones) was born Vivian Roberta Jones in Cherryvale, Kansas in 1909, although her family quickly moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was raised. She had extensive theatre experience, co-starring on Broadway with Ethel Merman in Anything Goes. She was acting in a play in Southern California when she was spotted by Desi Arnaz Sr. and hired to play Ethel Mertz, Lucy Ricardo’s neighbor and best friend. The pairing is credited with much of the success of “I Love Lucy.”  Vance was convinced to join the cast of “The Lucy Show” in 1962, but stayed with the series only through season three, making occasional guest appearances afterwards. This is the second of her half a dozen appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” She also joined Lucy for a TV special “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977. Vance died two years later.

Vance uses her birth name as her character name in all of her “Here’s Lucy” guest appearances. Vivian Jones (the character) is from Cherrvale, Kansas, just like Vivian Vance.

Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane Lewis) makes her fourth series appearance as Mary Jane. Croft played Betty Ramsey during season six of “I Love Lucy. ” She also played Cynthia Harcourt in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;E23) and Evelyn Bigsby in “Return Home from Europe” (ILL S5;E26). She played Audrey Simmons on “The Lucy Show” but when Lucy Carmichael moved to California, she played Mary Jane Lewis, the actor’s married name and the same one she uses on all 31 of her episodes of “Here’s Lucy. Her final acting credit was playing Midge Bowser on “Lucy Calls the President” (1977) with Vivian Vance. She died in 1999 at the age of 83.

Nancy Howard (Secretary) appeared with Lucille Ball in Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). This is the third and final appearance on “Here’s Lucy.”

This is the first of five episodes written by Martin A. Ragaway, who won a 1961 Emmy Award for his work on “The Red Skelton Show.”

When this show first aired, Lucille Ball and her children were actually in New York City, having been introduced from the audience of “The Ed Sullivan Show” the night before, January 18, 1970.  

The date this episode originally aired (January 19, 1970) CBS launched Operation 100, a plan to beat NBC's ratings in the last 100 days of the season, using the slogan "The man can't bust our network."  This was a riff on the campaign CBS Records (Columbia) used to appeal to the youth market in the late 1960s.  

Also on this date, actor Hal March (born Harold Mendelson) died at age 49 of lung cancer. March had appeared in two episodes of “I Love Lucy”, a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show” (above), and the Lucy film A Guide For the Married Man (1967).

This episode was first aired on the 27th anniversary of one of the most-watched episodes of television to that time, “Lucy Goes To the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). It is estimated that 72% of the American public who owned a television tuned in to see the birth of Little Ricky.  The event was even more remarkable in that it coincided with the birth of Desi Arnaz IV (Craig Carter here), who turned 27 years old on the day this episode aired in 1970. 

Both Lucille Ball and Lawrence Welk were known for their frequent (and unique) use of the word “wonderful.”  

In February 1969, Lucille Ball had appeared on “The Jack Benny Birthday Special” which also featured Welk and singer Ann-Margret, who will guest star on “Here's Lucy” two weeks after this episode airs. Other “Lucy” supporting actors who participated in the special: Dennis Day, Carole Cook (ghost singer), Gail Bonney, Larry Blake, Robert Foulk, Frank Gerstle, John Harmon, Ray Kellogg, Tyler McVey, Benny Rubin (above, with Welk), Rolfe Sedan, and Olan Soule. It was written by Sam Perrin and George Balzer, who wrote several episodes of “Here's Lucy” and choreographed by “Here’s Lucy” choreographer Jack Baker.

On the series DVD the episode is introduced by Norma Zimmer, one of Welk's Champagne Dancers, who also was featured as a Kildoonan Townsperson in the dream musical episode “Lucy Goes to Scotland” (ILL S5;E17). Although not featured in this “Here's Lucy” episode, Zimmer recalls that Welk, who did not consider himself an actor, was thrilled and proud to be asked to share the screen with Lucy.  

Gary Morton's loud laughter can clearly be heard on the soundtrack. Some sources mistakenly report this to be Desi Arnaz Sr.

KIM: “All the girls are ironing their hair!”  

The episode opens with Craig ironing Kim’s hair with a clothes iron on an ironing board!  As odd as this seems, this was actually done during the 1960s when straight hair became fashionable. In the 1970s, straight hair became easier with the advent of the hair iron, made specifically for hair use.

The studio audience starts applauding for Vivian Vance as the doorbell rings and before she's spoken or entered!  

Vivian Vance wears the same type of white-frame eyeglasses she wore as Vivian Bagley on “The Lucy Show.”

When Mary Jane also gushes about Lawrence Welk, Lucy remarks “He turns on more people than warm Postum.”  Postum is a powdered roasted-grain beverage once popular as a coffee substitute. It was developed by the Post Cereal Company (hence the name) in 1895 and is still sold in limited areas today. Later seasons of “I Love Lucy” were sponsored by Sanka, a similar caffeine-free coffee beverage. 

Lucy says that Welk is in town performing at the Palladium. The Hollywood Palladium is a theater built in 1940 and located at 6215 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. It has a dance floor including a mezzanine and a floor level with room for up to 4,000 people. Coincidentally, the Palladium is across the street from what was CBS Columbia Square, the home of CBS's Los Angeles radio and television operations from 1938 until 2007.

When Welk's secretary announces that there are a couple of teenagers (Kim and Craig) to see him, he asks if they are picketing and hostile. In the late 1960s teenagers were in the news as frequently involved in protests and marches involving the Vietnam War.  

Lawrence Welk is first seen practicing his golf stroke in his office. Like Desi Arnaz Sr. and Gary Morton, Welk was a big fan of golf and in 1964 founded a company known as Welk Resort Group which still operates properties in North America including golf resorts.

Mary Jane tells Lucy that they have a wax figure of Lawrence Welk at the Movieland Wax Museum where her friend is the manager. She adds that they also have one of Cary Grant, both of which require nightly lipstick removal from amorous visitors! Grant was last mentioned in “Lucy Protects Her Job” (S2;E14) as well as several previous episodes of this and Ball's other sitcoms. 

The real-life museum was located in Buena Park, Caliifornia. In addition to a wax Welk, a wax Lucille Ball was installed in 1963. Needless to say, the actual museum wax figure of Welk (seen above) was not used in the episode. The museum closed permanently in 2005.    

Lucy phones Sam Lutz to find out how much Lawrence Welk is paid. He tells her that Welk gets $7,500 a night. Sam Lutz (inset) was the name of Welk's real-life manager and the producer of his television show.

Vivian is reported to be doing touristy things like visiting Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. When Ethel Mertz was a tourist in Hollywood, she wanted to visit Knotts Berry Farm, but jealous Lucy was too angry with Ricky to enjoy it. “The only knots you'll see today will be on Ricky's head.”  Disneyland would open a month later and be mentioned in “Lucy the Bean Queen” (TLS S5;E3) in 1966.  

When Vivian returns from the Universal Studios Tour she says she saw:

John Wayne's Saddle - In “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21) John Wayne's saddle was an auction item for the Bank Charity Ball. Wayne played himself on a season 5 episode of “I Love Lucy” and did  so again on a season 5 episode of “The Lucy Show.” The last time Vivian Jones visited Lucy Carter on “Here's Lucy” she lied and said that she was in town to be in a movie with the western star.

Doris Day's Bicycle - In real life, Doris Day was an avid bike rider. She rode to the studio on many occasions and pedaled around Beverly Hills until the police finally told her they couldn't guarantee her safety.

Dean Martin's Bartender - This is a joke at the expense of Martin's reputation as a heavy drinker. It is coincidental that it follows a mention of John Wayne's saddle, which was seen in “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21).  

Vivian visited the studio commissary and sat in the very chair Bob Hope sat in, which was still warm. Vivian Vance and Bob Hope worked together on “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1).  

VIV (To ‘LAWRENCE WELK’): “I watch your show every Saturday night!” 

“The Lawrence Welk Show” began airing in June 1955 and had a remarkable 16 year run on ABC TV before being syndicated for a further 11 years ending in 1982. Welk was as associated with Saturday nights as Lucille Ball was with Mondays. Two days before this episode first aired (January 17, 1970) Welk’s guest was Ted Mack, legendary bandleader and talent scout. 

This episode is closely modeled on “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28). Vivian takes on the part of the nearsighted Carolyn Appleby and Mary Jane helps Lucy arrange the deception much like Ethel (Vivian Vance) did in 1955. The premise somehow comes off as more believable here. Lucy does not have steal Viv's glasses but simply convinces her to take them off to look better for her date. Instead of Lucy wearing a disguise, she borrows a wax mannequin of the star.  

Lawrence Welk was one of the most-mentioned celebrities on “The Lucy Show” (1962-67) despite never appearing on it in person. He rectifies that here.  

In “The Loophole in the Lease” (TLS S2;E12), the plot hinged on Lucy stealing Viv's white-framed eyeglasses.  

Although this is the first time Welk has actually been on set with Lucille Ball, his face was seen on a record album that Lucy Carmichael won at a bank picnic in “Lucy and Clint Walker” (TLS S4;E24).

In “Lucy and the Starmaker” (TLS S6;E4), Mr. Mooney cuts off Tommy Cheever’s (Frankie Avalon) 'audition’ after just a few notes. Lucy remarks that “Dizzie Gillespie would have had a better chance with Lawrence Welk!”  Gillespie was famous for free-form jazz riffs on the trumpet, while Welk was best known for the polka, waltzes, and more structured genres of music. 

When Viv goes to shake the wax Welk’s hand, quick thinking Lucy extends her own hand for Viv to shake instead. The gag also got big laughs in “The Handcuffs” (ILLS2;E4), “Lucy The Music Lover” (TLS S1;E8), and “Lucy Meets the Burtons” (HL S3;E1). 

In the second episode of “Here’s Lucy”, When Kim and Craig are on vacation at Jack Benny’s home in Palm Beach, Kim compares her brother’s ping pong game with Lawrence Welk. This line was likely an ad-lib by Lucie Arnaz to time the hitting of the ball over the wall. 

Welk facetiously claims to be writing a song for The Beatles. In “Lucy's Birthday” (S1;E18), Welk was contrasted with Ringo Starr, the drummer for the Beatles, when the kids are trying to find their mother a date for her birthday.   

In “Lucy The Shopping Expert” (S1;E20) a year earlier, Lawrence Welk was the punchline of a joke when Lucy insists on shaking the canned goods and listening to the noise they make. 

In “Lucy and the Drum Contest” (S3;E4), Craig says that Buddy Rich is his favorite musician. Uncle Harry says his is Guy Lombardo, who Lucy tells the kids is the Lawrence Welk of Harry’s generation. Lombardo and Welk were both popular bandleaders and cultural icons. The above photo of the two men (and Gila Rosenhause) was taken in 1971. 

Sitcom Logic Alert! 

The premise of this episode seems to ignore the fact that Vivian visited Lucy in Los Angeles less than a year before. She says that Kim “must have grown a foot”! 

When talking to the kids about Vivian, Lucy refers to “back East” which confirms that Lucy previously was from New York, but ignores that Vivian was last living in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  

Lucy lies about knowing Lawrence Welk, but in “Lucy the Matchmaker” (S1;E12) it was Vivian who lied about knowing John Wayne.  

While Lucy Carter admits to her children that she's lied to Vivian about knowing celebrities, she forgets that she has met (to date) Jack Benny, Van Johnson, Oscar-winner Shelley Summers (aka Winters), novelist Eva Von Graunitz (aka Eva Gabor), Carol Burnett, country singer Ernie Epperson (aka Ernie Ford), Patty Andrews, Johnny Carson, and Liberace!  

The ultimate lapse in believable coincidence comes when Welk wears the exact same outfit to the dinner date as the wax figure (above).  

Vivian really should be able to recognize Lucy’s deep voice saying “wunerful wunerful’.  

Inexplicably, Welk (the character) seems to want imitate the waxworks instead of be himself.  

Not being an actor, Welk's eyes often distractingly glance over at the teleprompter for his lines. He smiles at his own jokes, and anticipates rather than reacts. 

“Lucy and Lawrence Welk” rates 4 Paper Hearts out of 5

This is a really funny episode that is also a treat for Lucy lovers who know its inspiration. Of course, the classic Harpo mirror routine is a classic compared to a wax figure sitting at a dinner table, but in many ways this episode feels less contrived and more real than Lucy Ricardo's costumes and gruff voices. Welk, as expected, is a total fail as an actor, but it doesn't really matter. It is wonderful to see Mary Jane Croft play an integral role in the plot. Her facial expressions at dinner are priceless! Not having Gale Gordon involved is never noticed thanks to the glorious presence of Vivian Vance.

Terrorism cannot be ruled out in an incident in the Adams Morgan nightclub area of Northwest Washington, D.C. on Thursday night that saw a pick-up truck driven into two D.C. police officers on bicycles and a D.C. government transit employee before crashing into a parked truck, according to Police Chief Peter Newsham. A weapon was recovered from the pick-up according to Newsham.

An agent with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force was photographed at the scene with other investigators.

The incident took place near the main intersection of Adams Morgan, 18th Street and Columbia Road, NW.

Video posted by a witness shows the stunning distance that a female bicycle officer was thrown when hit by the pick-up truck.

Newsham and Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed the press outside Washington Hospital Center where the three wounded are being treated. One officer is in “very critical condition”, while the other officer and the civilian government employee have “serious” injuries but not life threatening, according to Newsham.

In response to a question on whether an AK-47 was recovered at a second scene and if terrorism can be ruled out, Newsham said there was no second scene but that a weapon had been recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.

Newsham said with regard to the possibility of terrorism, “we have to look at that very closely we do not have a motive at this time.” Newsham could not say of the officers were targeted, saying, “we don’t know, we don’t have a motive.”

Newsham did not describe the weapon seized, nor did he describe the suspects beyond saying they have non-life threatening injuries.
