**BOOK REVIEW** Good Girls Die First by @iloveweirdbooks ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 / 5 Thank you so much to @scholastic_uk for sending a copy! Good Girls Die First will be published in July 2020. • 10 teenagers lured to an abandoned carnival each with a secret to hide. They all start dying one by one, who will survive? I would describe this book as a supernatural twist on And Then There Were None. I loved the premise and really enjoyed the supernatural/horror elements that I didn't expect from the blurb. Kathryn Foxfield really builds suspense, creates a very effective unsettling atmosphere and really disorients the reader by playing around with the passage of time. I really liked the characters. I enjoyed all of their very varied personalities and the chemistry/dynamics between the group. Even the characters that didn't last very long shone. Jolie was a stand out favourite for me, as well as Noah. However I did find the secrets very predictable for each character. All of the clues were right there but this may not be as clear to other readers (I'm a crime/thriller fiend so I could be being extra Miss Marple here). There are some difficult subjects touched on throughout this novel (TW): suicide, eating disorders, sexual assault, death/bereavement. However I felt some of them were used as shock factors for the 'secrets' and were not necessarily addressed as well as they could have been, especially as it was clear the characters were damaged by these experiences. In general these themes did provide a strong message of battling inner demons, and these are all important issues to cover. Overall I thought this was a brilliant, entertaining, dark little novel. 418 I am a Teapot is an error code that indicates that the server refuses to brew coffee because it is, in fact, a teapot. And it’s also a title of a sci-fi dystopian book I’ve just finished by Edgar Scott! This book follows the story of a “staff” who has been in an accident causing him to, well, “wake up” is the best I can describe it. In a world where people can give up their freedom for being literally constantly online, “staff” have an interface installed into their brain that allows their body to be programmed to do drudge labor (trash service, assembly lines, customer service) while they remain online in what is really a cush virtual prison. When staff #418 wakes up, he wonders why his life is less valuable than other people. This is a sci-fi allegory on slavery. It’s written from the POV of both 418 and his owner, King (a wink and a nudge again) who wonders the same thing - why does he believe a staff’s life to be worth less than his. This book was a bit monologue-y (for obvious reasons) and the writing style is very similar to Dune. I have a tendency to prefer much more emotionally charged stories, but it was still a really interesting read and even has some discussion questions in the back to make you think. Setengah dari buku ini menceritakan ketegangan demi ketegangan yang terus menerus terjadi, membuatku agak kewalahan membacanya, namun aku sudah mulai terbiasa dengan jalan cerita yang berpindah-pindah antara Afsheen dan Hara. . Oh iya, hubungan antara Afsheen dan Carel memberikan semacam 'angin segar' diantara banyaknya konflik yang terjadi, sehingga bisa sedikit menurunkan ketegangan saat membaca buku ini, meskipun aku agak khawatir dengan apa yang akan terjadi nanti dan rencana macam apa yang selanjutnya akan dilancarkan oleh Hara, belum lagi fakta bahwa kekuatan yang dimilikinya semakin kuat. Jujur aku belum pernah baca buku lain dari Hanum dan Rangga, jadi ini buku pertama karya mereka yang aku baca. Menurutku buku ini lebih ke memoar ya dari pada novel. Karena isinya lebih ke perjuangannya Hanum dan Rangga untuk memperoleh anak. Berawal dari omongan "aku ga punya anak juga ga pa pa", mulailah berbagai ujian ini muncul termasuk ujian susah punya anak. Terlihat perjuangan Hanum dan Rangga untuk memperoleh keturunan sedemikian sengit. Mengorbankan waktu dan materi sedemikian banyak, berulang kali gagal inseminasi di tanah air dan di luar negeri, berulang kali gagal bayi tabung juga. Sampai menuju puncak kepasrahan dari mba Hanum-nya sendiri. Siapin tissue deh kalau sudah masuk ke bagian ini, karena rasa sedih, kecewa, susah payah tersampaikan persis kepada pembaca. Aku harus bersyukur karena aku sudah punya 1 anak dan itu ga sulit. Salut kepada Mas Rangga sebagai suami yang selalu ada untuk menguatkan dan menghibur istrinya. Ada hal lain yang menarik di buku ini, buku ini ditulis dengan 3 sudut pandang yang berbeda. Sarahza yang melihat calon orang tuanya dari Lauhul Mahfuz, Mba Hanum, dan Mas Rangga. Pelajaran yang bisa di ambil dari buku ini, berhati-hatilah dalam bertutur kata, pasrah dengan takdir dan tetap berdo'a, karena usaha tidak akan pernah mengkhianati hasil. Tiba-tiba Catalina mengirimkan surat aneh ke Mexico City, tepatnya ke Noemi dan ayahnya. Isi suratnya aneh, seolah Catalina itu sedang diganggu oleh makhluk supranatural dan dia secara tidak langsung meminta bantuan ke Noemi dan Ayahnya. Noemi pergi menemui Catalina atas bujukan ayahnya, dan disana dia menemukan hal yang tidak biasa. Rumah bernuansa Gothic bernama High Place dengan sederet cerita mitos seram tentang kutukan, hantu, kerasukan, dll. Noemi ditugaskan untuk membawa kembali Catalina ke Mexico City, namun hal itu malah membuatnya terseret ke dalam High Place dan Gloom-nya. Aku baca ini berharap banget dapat cerita horor yang tidak biasa, tapi ternyata isinya banyak drama tentang percintaan dan keluarga. Novel ini ditulis dari sudut pandang orang ketiga, penggambaran settingnya cukup detail, jadi cukup bisa dibayangkan High Place itu se-High apa. Karakter yang paling aku suka di sini Noemi sendiri, di tahun 1950an, budaya patriarki memang masih melekat namun Noemi membantah itu. Karakter feminisnya muncul dengan ciri khasnya yang keras kepala. Meskipun kebanyakan drama, tapi novel ini cukup bisa membuat aku penasaran karena beberapa komentar di goodreads bilang kalau novel ini mengangkat folklore Mexico. Tapi saat aku cari di google, aku ga nemuin satu artikel pun tentang itu. Jadi.. Yah, sudahlah.. Mungkin temen-temen yang tahu novel ini bisa mengisi komentar kalau punya info tambahan soal itu. Sekilas lihat covernya aku bisa menebak kalau ini bergenre horor, namun setelah dibaca semua, novel ini lebih ke thriller, misteri, namun ada juga unsur horornya. . Plot twist-nya banyak, dan pertama baca pasti dibuat bingung sama alurnya, aku saranin yang baca ini perhatikan baik-baik tanggal dan tempat yang tertera. . Narasinya detail sekali, jadi kalau bacanya sambil diresapi baik-baik akan terasa aura horor dan gore-nya. Terdapat banyak pepatah dan istilah malaysia juga, tapi jangan khawatir, semuanya di dukung footnote kok! . Prolognya menarik banget, awal-awal disuguhin cerita yang mirip-mirip folklore amerika soal bocah yang ketakutan ditinggal saat jam-nya tidur. . Terakhir, sekilas ini ceritanya mirip-mirip sama banyak banget pesan iseng yang nyuruh nyebarin kalau tidak bisa kena sial, cuman bedanya dalam novel ini jadi nyata. . Mulanya aku tidak kepikiran untuk membangun sebuah personal brand, rasanya hanya dengan memposting apa yang aku suka di media sosial itu sudah cukup untuk sekedar membuat diri sendiri senang. Percayalah, setelah aku selesai membaca buku ini aku langsung mengganti bio profil instagramku dan membuat Personal Brand Dimensions yang berisi Kompetensi, Standar dan Gaya yang bisa mengerucutkan apa dan bagaimana saat memposting di media sosial. . Namun aku sempat kepikiran juga saat membaca teks "jangan sekedar ikut-ikutan", apa aku sekedar ikut-ikutan kah? aku membuat konten review buku tapi aku hanya orang yang suka baca buku, bukan orang yang ahli dalam bidang sastra atau yang kuliah dalam bidang kesusastraan. Tapi aku berpegang teguh pada prinsip utama membangun personal brand yang aku dapatkan di buku ini "post-lah apa yang jadi kesukaanmu". Aku suka buku, jadi ? Ya sudah.... . Happy publication day to Kathryn Foxfield!! I was lucky enough to receive a proof copy of this book earlier in the year, and I loved it. **BOOK REVIEW** Orphan Monster Spy by @by_matt_killeen ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 / 5 • Talented, artistic, oppressed. Sarah has been learning to survive in a world that has become dangerous for her, her mother, and all other Jewish citizens throughout Europe. So what is a girl to do when she becomes unexpectedly orphaned? That's right. She becomes a spy in a boarding school for the Nazi elite in 1939. Sarah is one of my favourite novel protagonists in a long time. She is resourceful, ballsy, BRAVE, and mouthy. I love how she deals with her horrific situation, how she strategises and overcomes. Matt Killeen expertly weaves Sarah's backstory and experiences of being Jewish in increasing oppressive Austrian/German societies in the 1930s into the wider plot, which I found very educational. I found myself doing lots of research to fill in the gaps where my own knowledge was sadly lacking in this area of European history (this was further sparked by the Author's note at the end of the novel). The plot was SO GOOD. Excellently paced and the twists towards the end of the novel were so brilliantly unexpected, I found myself moving the book as far away from me as I could whilst still being able to read. A thrilling, well researched book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
