Because fanfiction.net keeps crashing I now have to bug you until it starts working again and I've been thinking about like...the Incident

I am convinced that the curse mark would still seal the Byakugan even if someone was resuscitated, provided they were clinically dead for a few moments

This has probably never happened within the Hyuga clan tho so once the mark disappears someone is considered dead even if their heart starts beating again

So my thought is that with this little work around it's entirely possible for Neji to survive and still be considered dead by everyone because no one thinks he's ever going to wake up again, the mark only disappears when someone dies right? He's just a body now, someone's just gotta turn off the life support (they can't do it though, they can't let go)

Of course, given sufficient incentive *cough*Shikamaru*cough* and some fucking stellar healing from our resident super medics he would wake up in this scenario, sans Byakugan and whatever that means for his eyesight

And yes, this is me absolutely making my own denial more plausible, thanks for asking
