Summary: It’s sort of funny though, to imagine Din being defeated by Gideon’s sword.

You wipe furiously at your face, smearing tears across your cheeks, while inwardly cursing yourself for showing weakness in front of Gideon. A lump forms in your throat as you replay the last sixty seconds on loop in your head, imagining exactly how Din will react to each sentence, especially those last two words: let go. This will be the one and only time you’re thankful you can’t feel Din’s half of the bond. If he’s feeling even a smidge of the throbbing, torturous pain you’re feeling right now, experiencing both sides would have overwhelmed you. Of all the commands Gideon could have chosen, why would he choose to taunt Din with that one? It’s as if the Seraph is purposefully trying to piss Din off.
Maybe he is insane, you think, not for the first time, just as he starts to clap his hands together in applause.
“Well done,” Gideon says, almost in admiration. “You’re a much better actress than I imagined you’d be.”
“It wasn’t an act,” you snap back.
“Regardless, you’ve served your part well.” He reaches forward to pat your head, and you honestly deserve an award for not giving into the urge to break his hand. “If it would make you feel better, I could make you forget this moment ever happened. Should I require you to send a second message, it would certainly make it all the more bittersweet for you to think it was your first attempt.”
His words make no sense at first, and you merely sit there in the chair blinking back at him, some distant part of you aware of how your eyelashes are still wet and stuck together. Involuntarily, you find yourself recalling Din’s reaction to your memory loss, how he had muttered under his breath he thought someone was responsible for the blank spots. Your mouth falls open in shock as Gideon’s meaning clicks.
“You...You tampered with my memories?” you whisper.
“It wasn’t personal. There are holes in every Cupid’s head.”
Why would he use his powers so cruelly and invasively? How does he choose which memories to erase? These questions and more run through your head, but you don’t voice them aloud. Everything you’ve heard about and actually seen in person about Gideon has solidified your opinion he is a certifiable control freak. Of course he would use his memory-erasing ability to further establish his position of authority amongst the Cupids.
Your eyes drift to the Cupid twi’lek behind him. “Is that why she’s here? You brainwashed her into joining you?”
“I made my own choice,” she replies, tone as sharp as the knife she twirls with nimble fingers. It doesn’t gleam like metal, instead faintly sparkling just like your arrows do. Kyber crystal, you realize with a chill of uneasiness. “You don’t see me in a collar, do you?”
“Indeed, I cannot alter memories, only erase them. It was free will that brought Xi’an to me, not manipulation,” Gideon says with a smile, but his eyes glimmer in a way that makes your throat close up with fear. “She has become a loyal and valuable ally.”
Valuable. One word and your suspicions are confirmed. Collared or not, Xi’an is just as much a toy for Gideon to play with as you and Din are. The only difference is she doesn’t seem to realize she is one. Or, and this is a dangerous possibility, she does know and simply doesn’t give a damn.
“She’s your ally?” you echo, nervously licking your lips. “What does that mean?”
“She has dedicated herself to the achievement of my goal.”
You know he’s purposefully baiting you, but still you find yourself asking, “And that goal is?”
Gideon leans forward, invading your personal space even as you jerk backwards in your seat. The smile has been wiped from his face, replaced with narrowed eyes and a twisted scowl. He deliberately presses the unlit laser sword against the middle of your chest in the space between your breasts, thumb teasingly hovering over the activation button.  
When he answers, you’ve never heard anyone else speak as seriously as him.
“To finish what I started.”
The words linger in the air the same foreboding way Din’s reapers linger around hospitals. You don’t realize you’re not breathing until Gideon steps back after several pounding heartbeats pass and your lungs are on fire. You suck in a breath of relief, but your body remains tense, recognizing the dangerous situation you’re still stuck in.
“Mayfeld,” Gideon addresses the man armed with three guns who immediately straightens. “Take her back to her cell.”
You don’t resist as Mayfeld grabs you by the upper arm and tugs you out of your seat. It’d take a miracle to incapacitate him and everyone else in the room before they subdued you. No, you can’t make any rash decisions. The right moment will come, you tell yourself. It has to.
...Right?
“So, what’s it like being Death’s soulmate?”
You’re jerked out of your thoughts by Mayfeld’s voice. You side-eye him, keeping your mouth firmly shut.
“I mean, I’ve heard he never takes off the helmet,” he continues, unbothered by your silence. “But surely you must’ve seen what’s underneath there. If it were me, I’d definitely wanna know the face of the guy I’m allegedly destined to spend the rest of my life with.”
“Allegedly?” The question slips out before you can stop yourself.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m not so much a believer in fate or destiny or true love. And now that I know the guy who’s the boss of Cupid operations?” He huffs out a breath, shaking his head. “Forget about ever trying to convince me the universe has a mortal’s best interests in mind when it allows a Seraph as bat-shit crazy as the Moff to have the power he has.”
“If you think he’s insane, why do you work for him?”
“The pay’s good,” he answers with a laugh. “Plus, if he really does pull off this plan of his, well...let’s just say I’d rather be in his corner than anywhere else.”
“You do realize though that anyone in Gideon’s corner is an enemy of Death’s?” you say, half-taunting him half-genuinely curious about his reaction.
“That thought has recently crossed my mind,” is all he replies.
The conversation comes to a halt when you arrive back at your cell. Mayfeld pushes you inside, but the force is noticeably gentler than the thug who had manhandled you earlier. Standing near the pallet, you watch as he digs a remote out of the pocket of his pants and activates the laser grid with a single press of a button.
Interesting.
You expect Mayfeld to immediately return to Gideon’s side, so you’re surprised and more than a little confused when the man continues to linger. A minute of silence ticks by and your confusion changes to frustration. What does he want?
Just as your mouth opens to snidely voice the question, the baby chooses that precise moment to sneak back into your cell. Your heart leaps into your throat as you rush forward to grab him, torn between forcibly shoving him back into the hole or foolishly attempting to hide him behind your back.
“There’s the little green guy,” Mayfeld says, and you pause at the audible note of cheerfulness in his voice. The baby coos in your arms, waving his hand in the man’s direction.
They kriffing know each other?
Mayfeld notices your bewildered expression. “What? You think none of us noticed he doesn’t like staying put? We might be mercenaries, but we’re not complete idiots.”
“You’re a heartless bastard,” you spit, holding the baby tighter against your chest. “He’s a baby and you’re doing nothing to get him out of here.”
“First of all,” he counters, holding up a finger. “Ouch. And second,” he points that same finger directly at the baby, “that little guy is older than me so calling him a ‘baby’ isn’t exactly fair.”
Your eyes sweep over Mayfeld, estimating him to be at least forty. You then look at the green face smiling back at you. Yeah, there’s no way he’s telling the truth.
“You’re a liar.”
“Maker, the hits just keep on coming.” Mayfeld rolls his eyes. “Why would I lie about his age?”
“I…” you trail off, unable to come up with an excuse.
“Exactly.” He nods smugly. “Look, he fooled me, too, with those big brown eyes of his. If I hadn’t witnessed what he can do when that collar’s off, I might have been suckered into releasing him. He’s cute, sure, but he’s also secretly a menacing gremlin.”
You frown. “What do you mean you’ve seen what he can do?”
“I mean he’s got powers. He can lift things with his mind, throw men against walls five times his size like they weigh nothing. What’s worse is he uses those powers to steal. I had a pack of cookies I was saving and he levitated them right out of my pocket.”
Your disbelief falters at that last bit. You had already surmised the baby had stolen the cookies, but not like this. Looking down at him again, the collar stands out more prominently than ever before. Xi’an told you they were purposefully designed to prohibit the use of powers. Why else would the baby wear one if he didn’t possess some type of special ability?
“You really have some serious trust issues, don’t you?” Mayfeld says, almost sounding impressed by your stubborn reluctance to believe him.
“I’m currently being held hostage by a psychopath,” you retort. “I think I’m allowed to be suspicious of a mercenary who says everything that pops into his head.”
His lips purse. “Alright. That’s a good point.”
“Isn’t it risky?” you ask, stepping closer to the gate. “Sharing all this information with me?”
“Only if you don’t appreciate the value of it all.”
Your brow furrows, not understanding.
“Look,” he lowers his voice meaningfully. “One way or another, Gideon and Death are gonna face each other and only one side will win. Gideon wins, great. Status quo unchanged. But if your soulmate wins?” He grimaces at the prospect. “By talking to you, I’m trying to cover all my bases here.”
Your brain works rapidly to fill in the blanks. “So, let me get this straight. You think that by getting on my good side, Death won’t murder you?” A wide grin stretches across your face, not the least bit friendly. “Oh, honey, you’ve got to do so much better than that. With what you’ve given me so far, the only kindness he’ll spare you is ripping your throat out quickly so you don’t suffer long.”
Take the bait.
“Oh, yeah?” A flicker of nervousness flashes across his face. He shifts his stance, arms crossing over his chest. “What would I have to do to not have that happen? I’m, uh, open to suggestions.”
Good, good, good.
“You get me the keys to these collars, I can guarantee you’ll walk out of here with every limb attached and not one drop of blood spilt.”
A long beat passes wordlessly. It would be completely silent if not for the baby’s quiet whining as he cuddles against you, unsettled by the tense atmosphere.
“You’re not the only one with trust issues,” Mayfeld says at last. “Maybe you can guarantee Death won’t kill me, but how do I know you won’t kill me with your bow yourself?”
You say nothing, not because you’re guilty of thinking of that specific scenario, but because you don’t know how to convince him you haven’t considered it. Anyone else in your same predicament would undoubtedly shoot him the first chance they got. He is an enemy after all. A minor one, true, but nevertheless contributing to the effort of keeping you separated from Din. He also clearly only has his own self-interest in mind, making him unpredictable and untrustworthy. Who’s to say he won’t attempt to double-cross you somehow?
All these reasons are valid and should make you hate him, but something inside of you isn’t allowing you to commit wholeheartedly to the feeling. And as much as it pains you to admit it, you know that ‘something’ is fear. You’ve never killed anyone before. Shot someone with an ichor arrow? Yes, several times, but not once was the wound fatal. As your list of escape options continues to dwindle though, you’re terrified of the possibility you’ll have no choice but to personally be responsible for ending someone’s life.
“There’s my answer,” Mayfeld says. His words are distressingly ambiguous, but it’s the way he bobs his head in a decisive manner and turns his back on you that causes your stomach to tie itself into knots.
Throat suddenly dry, you struggle to choke out, “Wait, I—”
He starts whistling an upbeat tune as he walks away, ignoring your attempts at reclaiming his attention. You listen hopelessly as the sound gradually grows farther and farther away, until eventually all you can hear is silence.
And once more, it’s just you and the baby alone in the cell.

You lie on the pallet, staring up at the ceiling with the baby sleeping on your stomach. You reflect on everything that has happened since you left Arvala-7, taking every moment apart piece by piece to figure out what you know.
From what you’ve witnessed, you don’t think your superiors are involved in or even aware of Moff Gideon’s plans. Lang, Hess, and Morgan were his associates, not allies like he’d called Xi’an. The difference is subtle, but profound in meaning. You wonder if the three of them have had memories erased too, if they know Gideon was responsible.
He had told them you were being hidden away to prevent other Cupids from knowing you had a second soulmate, but that wasn’t the whole truth. Gideon wants you as his hostage because you’re Din’s soulmate. He wants to use you as leverage to get Din to do what he wants. Initially, you assumed that meant kill those who Gideon considered enemies, but that assumption was proven incorrect when you sent the message to Din without naming even one potential target.
Unfortunately, you think that is not the only wrong assumption you’ve made recently. Gideon had forced you to tell Din to let go. The bond had cried out with agony when you’d said the words out loud as it had thought you were telling Din to let go of you. But looking back at the incident with a clearer head, you find yourself wondering why hadn’t Gideon included those two extra words if that was what he meant? It’s not like there wasn’t plenty of space left to write them on the paper.
If he didn’t mean for Din to let go of you, then logically that would mean he wants Din to let go of something else. Something important enough that Gideon is taking advantage of your relationship in order to convince him to release it.
But what could Din possibly possess that Gideon wants this badly? Din doesn’t own anything valuable except for the Crest and his armor, and you doubt either of those will further progress Gideon towards his goal.
To finish what I started.
Hours later and you still can’t figure out what the kriff he’s talking about. No matter which way you twist or turn the phrase over in your mind, it’s incomprehensible. What did he start? When did it happen? How does he intend to finish it?
Considering how your previous assumptions were both flawed, you really shouldn’t be making another one, but you can’t get the moment of when he’d pressed the sword against your chest out of your mind. The action itself screamed intimidation as well as sexual harassment, but when you think about how he did it at the same time he revealed his goal, your gut instinct is telling you to definitely assume the two are connected to each other.
And then there’s Mayfeld’s comment about there being an inevitable clash between Din and Gideon. He had sounded so certain there would only be one victor, but, unlike you, he hadn’t immediately placed his bet on Din. Which makes no sense to you. Everyone knows it’s an indisputable fact Din is the most powerful entity in the universe, second only to the Maker. The chance of Gideon winning their fight is so slim it’s infinitesimal.
It’s sort of funny though, to imagine Din being defeated by Gideon’s sword.

Over the span of Din’s existence, he had witnessed entire civilizations wiped out by war, genocide, disease. No matter the reason behind the tragedy, the universe always called him there in the final moments to walk amongst the ruins left behind, to watch those last to die mourn those who passed before them. In those moments, he felt powerless, knowing there was not one thing he could do to change any of it.
He realized the universe was trying to instill a lesson in him: what is meant to happen, will always happen. Regardless of who is hurt in the process.
And maybe he would have surrendered to the harsh teaching if his angel hadn’t been stolen from her rightful place at his side. No one, not even the fucking universe itself, is going to stop him from getting her back.
From their first meeting, he couldn’t get her out of his mind. Then when she asked him question after question about his likes and dislikes, his hobbies, his favorite sights in the galaxy—he made the risky decision of trusting her. He revealed his face to her, allowed her to know every part of himself, and was stunned every time she didn’t fear or run away from what she discovered. He didn’t know whether to consider her stupid or brave, but the moment he first heard her laugh at one of his sarcastic quips he knew it was a sound he wanted to hear everyday for the rest of eternity.
When she showed him her marked hand, claiming they were each other’s soulmates, he swore to himself he’d dedicate himself to her happiness. Anything she wanted or asked for, he would give to her without question.
Except now she has asked him to do the impossible: to let go.
He replays the transmission enough times every word, every quiet hitch of breath, and every subtle twitch of her facial features is embedded in his mind. Bo-Katan heaves a sigh after the eighth loop, squeezing the bridge of her nose as if a headache was forming, but he can’t bring himself to tear his gaze away from the hologram long enough to glare at the reaper. She doesn’t have a soulmate, therefore she can’t even begin to fathom how it feels when his half of the soulmate bond slams itself against the invisible wall separating him from his angel with all the unhinged ferocity of a feral beast.
If Din didn’t know his angel as intimately as she knew him, he might have believed those were her own words coming out of her mouth. However, throughout the entire length of the message he notices how her eyes nervously flick to the side every few seconds, as if she needs to reassure herself someone offscreen isn’t making any sudden movements. It’s all the confirmation he needs to know she’s being used as a mouthpiece against her will to demand Din gives up searching for her.
Din refuses to yield to the whims of an enemy who doesn’t have the balls to face him directly.
He channels his seething anger into steadfast determination as he stretches his powers out across the galaxy for a second time, this time searching for the twi’lek Hess so graciously identified for him. Her being the one to have dragged his soulmate out of Cupid headquarters couldn’t have been a random circumstance. If she has even the slightest notion of who the elusive immortal is that is responsible for shielding his angel from him, he’ll beat the name out of her just as he had her Cupid superior.
Bo-Katan, never one to stand still when she can be doing something useful, sends a message out to her fellow reapers to fill them in on the developing situation. Only Din can give them orders to follow, but she strongly recommends they interrogate any Cupid they come across for information about Xi’an.
Transmissions start flooding in an hour later of reapers reporting what they’ve learned. Turns out Xi’an is the type of person who finds joy in antagonizing others. No one claims her as their friend nor do they know what region of the galaxy she usually operates in. The most interesting tidbit learned from the interrogations is that several Cupids have admitted they often saw the twi’lek in the archives at headquarters, studying datapads and flipping through holobooks.
“She was searching for something,” Bo-Katan murmurs, brow creasing thoughtfully.
“Or she was gathering information on someone’s behalf.” Din’s eyes remained closed, focus split between the conversation and the search. “Only Cupids are allowed at their headquarters. She’d have no issue slipping in and out without anyone giving her a second—”
Every soul has a unique aura that can only be sensed by power-sensitive beings like himself. No two are the same, similar to fingerprints and snowflakes. Having a specific target in mind hastens the search of detecting them amongst the trillions of other beings inhabiting the galaxy, but it is not the fact that Din’s powers have just locked onto Xi’an’s soul that has his eyes snapping open. It is her location.
She’s on Umbriel.
“Stay with the ship,” he tells Bo-Katan.
Din teleports before the reaper responds, arriving at the front entrance of his soulmate’s apartment in the next blink. The front door is wide open and his jaw clenches as he recognizes the gesture for the taunt it is. Rolling his shoulders back, he enters the apartment, purposefully shutting and locking the door behind him.
“About time you showed up.” As soon as Din hears her voice, he’s reminded of a loth cat screeching when its tail is grabbed. The anger he’s been forcibly holding back starts to simmer beneath his armor, fingers twitching at his sides with the desire to wrap around her throat and squeeze.
He finds a purple-skinned twi’lek Cupid standing in the center of the living room. Or, what used to be considered the living room at least. Every piece of furniture has been broken and torn apart. The pile of newspapers kept in the corner are shredded and scattered across the floor. If he didn’t know how precious they were to his angel in her quest to reclaim her memories, he wouldn’t have cared about the mess, but he does know and his wrath increases exponentially.
“Xi’an,” he says, the name bitter on his tongue like a curse.
“The rumor mill says you’ve been looking for me,” she drawls, looking coy and fluttering her eyelashes. “I gotta say, I’m flattered by the attention.”
“Tell me where my soulmate is and you won’t meet the same fate as your boss.”
Her head tilts, tapping her fingers against her chin in mock thoughtfulness. “Are you referring to Hess? I heard no one’s been able to reach him lately, but since I report to someone of much higher ranking I could hardly bring myself to care.” Her lips curl into a wicked smirk, revealing the faintest glimpse of her fangs. “You’ve piqued my interest now though, what’d you do to the bastard?”
“I ripped out his soul and crushed it into dust.”
She giggles, unpleasant and shrill. “How scandalous.”
His patience snaps.
“Enough of this.” He steps forward. “Tell me who you work for and where is my soulmate.”
A pair of knives appear in her hands, summoned in the same quick manner as his angel had drawn her bow.
“My answer to the first part is no. And as for the second, you need to be more specific.” She sneers. “Which part of her are you looking for?”
The noise that tears itself out of Din’s throat is one never made by another entity before. It is an outburst of ravenous fury, a promise of bloodshed and carnage, and a predator’s roar before they consume their prey all blended into one deafening war cry.
Xi’an maintains a brave face as she throws knife after knife at him, but as each one harmlessly deflects off his beskar and dissolves into a flicker of light, he sees her mask begin to crack, revealing her nervousness.
She resorts to throwing punches when he’s close enough, but there is no finesse and each one is sloppy. He catches her fist mid-swing with his own hand and twists, shattering her wrist. She gasps out a curse, but the unexpected reappearance of her mischievous smirk manages to catch him off guard.
“Are you gonna do it?” she asks, voice tight with pain, but the intent to provoke him is clear. “Unleash that beautiful darkness I can sense writhing around inside of you?”
He pins her against the wall harsh enough her teeth audibly clack against each other. Still she keeps smirking, still her voice drips like poison into his ears.
“You know you want to, sweetie, so just let go.”
Din’s powers lash out, incensed by those two words he’s sick of hearing. Latching onto her soul, she starts to choke, but the deranged glimmer of glee in her eyes makes him think she’d be laughing if she could.
Darkness starts to ooze out of his armor, resembling thick, black smoke. He can feel the sinister energy emanating from the very core of his being, as if the box it’s been trapped in has been unlocked and is seconds away from bursting open.
Some distant, far part of him is ringing every warning alarm and urging him to stop. But he ignores that voice of reason when he sees Xi’an’s soul start creeping up the back of her mouth, glowing brightly as it squirms in a futile attempt to free itself from the hold of his powers.
He grits his teeth, impatience prompting him to tug at it again, and—
The world lurches and transforms in a blur. When his vision adjusts, he’s no longer standing in his soulmate’s apartment, but instead surrounded by an abundance of scorched trees. Chest heaving, he struggles to clear his head of violent thoughts and make sense of what just happened.
Someone suddenly calls out from behind him, “I summoned you here to speak with you.”
Din recognizes the speaker’s voice before he actually turns to see the female togruta. She wears her usual blue-and-silver tunic and a brown headpiece embedded with a gem over her montrals. The ground is green beneath her feet, the only glimpse of flourishing nature for miles.
“I was in the middle of something, Ahsoka,” Din answers, stalking forward until they stand nearly toe to toe. He’s lost count of how many encounters they’ve had with one another over the years, but no matter the number he remains reluctant to consider her a friend since the Oracle has the irritating knack for disrupting his life when he least desires her presence.
She stands tall, but her hands move to rest on the hilts of the two sabers attached to her belt. “Have you forgotten your creed? When the universe needs you, you listen to it.”
“My soulmate needs me!” he shouts, trembling as another pulse of dark energy discharges from his body. It washes over Ahsoka like a harsh gust of wind, but while she remains unaffected, the patch of grass withers instantaneously.
“The universe recognizes that,” Ahsoka says, and while her calmness does nothing to ease his frayed nerves, her next words have him freezing in place. “And I’ll take you to her so long as you promise me one thing.”
Tentative hope slices through the erratic storm of frenzied emotions in his chest like a beam of sunlight. He searches Ahsoka’s face for the faintest hint of deception, but finds only sincerity.
“What is it?”
“You cannot kill Moff Gideon.”

The Novoselic Revolution: Post Arc Discussion.
//For those who are confused about the existance of this post in particular, sit tight and let me explain.
//This post doubles as an important announcement in regards to my upload schedule. Stay tuned to find out more.
//This might be something that I’m going to make a habit of in the future. I’ve decided that from here on out, once I finish a story arc, I’m going to have a quick post debriefing and going over all of the important points, or at least the one’s that I consider important, and giving my personal thoughts and feelings on them as the mod and writer of this ask blog and it’s story.
//Firstly though, here’s the important info.
//One or two of you may have caught that short post about me going on hiatus before I deleted it. If you did...then just ignore it. I won’t be making any posts tonight, other than the story one from earlier and this one, but there is a reason for this decision.
//As I mentioned to one anon in a previous post, I’m usually pretty unbusy, as I only go to college on three days a week, being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
//Tuesdays are long days for me, so from now on, you won’t be seeing any uploads on Tuesday’s. Since I’m from England, I don’t know what that would be Pacific Standard time, but at least you know now.
//Moving on, like I said, you’ll be seeing these posts at the end of each arc. Certain topics will be covered here in regards to plot points and characters of the arc, and how I personally feel like I executed them in the end.
//I’m the type of writer who can be critical of my own writing. That is something I find to be a good thing.
//Moving on, let’s get started.
Bringing a conclusion to unfinished plot-points:
Angie is the “main antagonist” of this arc, and as a character on her own, she’s someone who I’ve never exactly been fond of. Her actions during the killing game, as well as just how she portrays herself, I liked at first, but then slowly but surely got less interested in as time went on.
Her inclusion as a character in this series, not just as a “villain” but in general, was pretty important. Angie suffers from the curse of being a Chapter 3 victim who was going through an arc, that her death cuts short. Though her motivations for doing what she did in the killing game are slightly different here, I still felt like giving her a central role in this arc would be a good way to round up that conflict, as well as being able to redeem herself in the end after it’s revealed that she fell victim to a brainwashing not unlike her own. Tenko and Himiko play a pretty big role in her arc as well, particularly Tenko in that one scene where Angie confesses that Tenko’s feelings of immense deteste towards her do not go unrequited. In the end, Tenko and Angie are able to make peace, but it’s not that easy for two people who have spited each other for such a long time to just make up on the spot, so they accept each other, but only just.
Similarly, I wanted to try and bring an end to the conflict of Game 2 Case 3. I know how many of us feel about that case, but that is another case where one of the two victims (Hiyoko in this case) gets her arc cut short. We never ever see Mikan, Hiyoko or even Ibuki apologize and come to terms with each other, even after all they’ve been through. My headcanon that I implemented into this series is Hiyoko doesn’t stop bullying Mikan and spites her for her actions, and Shuichi and Mikan are cleverly able to use this to execute the Double Agent plan. This plan, when it’s revealed, makes Hiyoko stop and reconsider things that she’s said to Mikan, and she tries to do her best to apologize and be a better person towards the poor nurse. Even if her apology was clumsy, Mikan is still forgiving, because that’s just how she is.
Double-Agent Mikan:
This was a “sub-plot” that was really fun to write. As a writer, particularly one who writes DR stories like this one, I find it to be particularly enjoying to play with the emotions of the followers.
Mikan’s “betrayal” was one I figured would hit pretty hard, and the fact that she somehow reverted back to being a remnant would hopefully shock everyone. I tried so hard to sell it too, even going as far as to make it seem like she murdered Tenko on Angie’s behalf.
Of course, in the end, Mikan ends up being a double agent, with the only other person knowing this being Shuichi. On which note, despite how I tried to sell it, I also gave as many minor hints as possible that things weren’t what they seemed. The main one was Shuichi’s behavior after Mikan was outed as a spy for Angie. I made him savage and rude, much unlike the actual Shuichi, to give everyone the impression that things weren’t right. He acts this way, for clarification, to sell to the others that Mikan wasn’t on their side, even though in any other situation, he’d probably choose to believe her.
Also, I wanted Mikan to be badass. For those who forgot, she still has that wound from when Mikihiko shot her with a crossbow arrow.
Tsumioda Side-Story:
My biggest concern with this one was how it was almost shoehorned into the story...Well, not almost, it WAS shoehorned in, but I wanted it to be a conclusion to Mikan’s character arc in this story and in the story as a whole.
For those who are curious too, Mikan will have that highlight and be bandageless for the rest of the series.
Mikihiko Koyasunaga:
As I already mentioned in a previous ask, Mikihiko is my favourite villain that has been revealed thus far. He is a snide, manipulative, cowardly, disgusting, creepy, psychopathic monster, despite his innocent appearance.
His role in the story isn’t over yet. While the previous arc’s villan, being Haiji, was relieved of any chance of a second coming thanks to a certain sword-weilding animator, Mikihiko’s got big roles to play and big shoes to fill as one of the more important members of the Zetsubou Foundation.
In the end, the way he turned out was almost like Kokichi if Kokichi was sort of the reverse. While Kokichi actually has strong, heroic morals, but lies about them and pretends to be evil, Mikihiko lies about having conviction, beliefs and heroic ideals, when in reality, he is just plain nasty, and wants nothing more than to see everyone around him, friend or foe, to suffer.
His backstory as briefly mentioned here, is his reason why he has no faith or praise for humanity, and only ever finds solace in his puppets. Despite owing a lot to Zetsubou, Mikihiko doesn’t even trust his peers. To him, if you’re alive, you should suffer, and he’s always gonna hit you where it hurts. He’ll torture you, kill you, or worse, if it means you’ll feel the worst kind of suffering you can...
...and he will get off on watching your pained face.
The Conclusion:
This is the part I’m most worried about. There’s not a lot I can say about the arcs ending as a whole.
I managed to get everything I wanted wrapped up in the end, with apologies, proposals, and so much more. This arc is not my favorite out of all the one’s I’ve wrote so far, but it’s up there. In the end, how I feel about it doesn’t matter, it’s all down to you all and your opinions.

On the character writing of  Captain Marvel’s antagonists
How is Captain Marvel’s villain game?
The MCU’s story of how Carol Danvers comes to realise what gives her the capacity to do heroic things is rooted in an intimate tale of self-discovery, knowing oneself, and embracing oneself as one is. It is not a classic story of confrontation between good and evil and therefore the classic hero’s journey formula does not apply. Carol is exactly the same personality at the end of the film as she is at the beginning of the film, with the crucial difference that by the end, she is in a position to control and honestly evaluate her own life narrative – she has regained solid ground under her feet without which no one can pass moral judgments or make decisions that affect the lives of other people.
Carol’s origin story is not about punching someone into remorse and submission, but about finding herself (almost literally) – which means that the antagonists of the film are the friends she makes along the way. The opposing force is a deeply personal one and climbs into the protagonist’s soul rather than threatens their life. That makes Yon-Rogg not as one-dimensional as people seem to think. He’s more of a foil than an outright antagonist to Carol on a personal level, but it’s hard to say whether he is overall meant to be represented as a misguided Kree patriot or a hammy villain because the former gets too vague a development and the latter just does not work – war is war, they’re all dirty, and Supreme Intelligence takes the cake here. Since Yon-Rogg’s motivations are strongly informed by his role as the poster boy of the Kree military, the Kree-Skrull plotline actually should be elaborated upon if they wanted to convey him as “the guilty party” in both storylines that push the story forward.
I’ve tried to identify with the villains of the film in order to write the following; consider that it is not a pleasant exercise but an intriguing one nonetheless.
Storylines
There are two storylines that intersect in the film and push the plot onwards: Carol’s unfolding quest to make sense of her past, and the Kree-Skrull war. The twist in Carol’s personal storyline results in a change up in regard to how to view the Kree-Skrull war, but it’s not ground-breakingly illuminating, since the war between these races is never sufficiently elaborated upon and it is not the main emotional centre of the film – how Carol feels about the Kree and her mentor is! Therefore, the antagonists’ character development unfolds in layers.
Consider for a minute, the Kree ideology. Collectivist, imperialist, hyper-militaristic, superior in technology and culture. Roman Empire seems like an appropriate comparison. They see themselves as the rightful rulers by conquest who have a duty to maintain order, safety, and stability within their empire. Realpolitiks of empires. Hyper-militaristic inclinations translate onto the individual level as well where the collective interest is set before one’s individual interests. And it translates into Yon-Rogg’s motivations and outlook very clearly, though with some interesting exceptions that add to his character writing.
·         He is a devout warrior, unshakably loyal to the Kree’s cause and their claims of superiority.
Yet     he is not fond of the scorched earth tactics of the overly zealous     Accusers.
He     avoids entangling civilians in the Kree-Skrull conflict to the very last     second (he also avoids shooting Carol outright in their very first     meeting).
He     genuinely cares about his soldiers’ lives, and they trust him a lot in     return, even when he is misleading other high-ranking officers in the Kree     army (Ronan).
He     prioritises the good of all Kree above all else (instead of, notably, personal power).
He     genuinely believes in what he is trying to teach Vers (emotions should not     rule your good judgment in a conflict situation; the Kree’s enlightened     rule is for the better for all); it is not only part of     their cover-up scheme.
He     views the Skrulls’ means of fighting as dishonourable because of their     penchant for subterfuge rather than direct combat. In another context that     would be called being “honourable” in combat.
So, as a Kree, an authoritarian space fascist, he is pretty reasonable and a more rounded than your standard evil for evil’s sake goon.
What to make of him in relation to Carol?
It’s twisted from its very beginning, since Yon-Rogg effectively saves Carol’s life by stealing it from her. He hesitates to kill Carol outright by the lake. Then, ironically, saves her life by abducting her as she verges between life and death. And then, metaphorically, the Kree kill Carol Danvers anyway. Only to “bring her back to life” through the blood transfusion from Yon-Rogg and through the presumed genetic meddling to make it stick (her entire blood supply and blood reproduction has to get replaced). A “rebirth” with no memory of past life, but with cosmic powers and superior physiology to contain it. It’s as messy as they come.
That bit of writing also establishes how unnervingly intimate a bond they share (something that comes to underlie a sense of possessiveness and ownership on his part, and confirms that this is not healthy). To see Carol succeed strokes Yon-Rogg’s ego – he made the right call as a soldier, he is part of the origins of her powers, and he is a good teacher. It also makes you think, was it (stupid) curiosity, principles, or admiration that stopped him from shooting Carol? She had almost brought him down in a plane fight, after all. And while he acts under orders from SI, I doubt Yon-Rogg protests its wisdom too much – it is highly likely the Kree see themselves as genuinely benevolent for saving this human and giving her so much by making her one of them (see their sense of superiority, again). If anything, I would expect an AI (not Yon-Rogg) not to want to risk leaving Carol alive and liable to turn against them.
It is said in interviews that Yon-Rogg both appreciates and is irritated by Carol’s “humanity” and quirks. He also seems to me as perfectly aware that what he is doing is wrong on a personal level. Over six years, he and Carol grow close – he is her crutch in Kree culture, Carol trusts him a lot (coming to him after her nightmares) and looks up to him/wants to prove herself to him, and there is even some implicit flirtation between them at the beginning of the film (“it’s me you see, isn’t it?”). That level of friendship entails some empathy. He may be ruthless, but he is not a psychopath (or is only a psychopath to the extent all devout patriotic soldiers are). For despite all that happens to Carol, she is not aware of any of it, and she ends up liking her life with the Kree by the time the film starts. She has military background, she likes to prove herself and be good at things, and the Kree never treat her badly (minus the grand deception part, ofc). From Yon-Rogg’s perspective then, as long as the lie is not found out, it is not objectively a bad life, is it? He has a soft spot for his favourite student (their relationship has been described as “tender” among other things). He has faith in her (“She’s stronger than you think!”), is (over-)protective of her, but wants to genuinely see her succeed - albeit on the Kree’s terms and not her own. He is trying to do his best as a mentor to a soldier and as a soldier to his people, and sincerely believes it will make everything easier for Carol, but because of the manner in which Carol has come to be his pupil, all of what is happening here can only become one huge poisoned chalice. However, you can see how someone like him can justify lying to a person for 6 years - longer still, had Carol not happened to crash on C53.
The truth of the matter is, of course, that Carol due to her amnesia does not have a choice regarding the narrative into which she is thrust, and that is the inherent evil that she overcomes in the film – taking back control over her life’s narrative and thus also gaining the necessary faith in oneself that comes with knowing oneself. The Kree have given her plenty, making up a big part of her (literally), but by infringing on her right to self-determination most horribly in the process. “The best version she could be” can ever only be pushed upon her in this state, like it happens so often in overly controlling families and partnerships.
Consider seriously that while Yon-Rogg’s advice to “control emotions and not let them cloud your judgment” may echo the belittling gender dynamics of our world, it is only an analogy – the Kree are not putting Carol in this situation in the film because she is a woman (they’re arguably rather progressive about their gender and sexual politics by the looks of it). It is not inherently a wrong or bad advice to drill into a soldier, and that is what Carol is – a soldier. However, as it happens, autobiographical long term memory triggers most strongly based on emotions, so suppressing them also counteracts the possibility that Carol might regain her memories. The Kree may well not even know what Carol could do if she was more in touch with herself and her powers – their foremost concern is winning “her heart and mind” so that she doesn’t turn against them. Again, they are personal, psychological villains. So, by tying her more strongly to Kree culture and ways, as well as training her according to that dictum, Yon-Rogg’s hitting two birds with one stone, really. I do not doubt that his orders from SI were, and his mind is set on, ensuring her loyalty by any means necessary. However, in comparison to, for instance, Bucky, the Kree do not literally constantly torture and brainwash her to turn her into a vegetable. It’s a “golden cage” type situation from the perspective of these “benevolent” aliens.
In that sense, the ‘enemy’ of the film is not so much the meme of a “debate me guy” or your ordinary our world chauvinist, or patriarchy (they are analogies, but not inherent to the conflict of the film), but the insidious disregard the Kree show toward individuals and their right to self-determination. As a culture, that is not their thing. And as other cultures are seen as lesser than them, they see their ways as backwards. Arguably that disregard underlies and precedes gendered readings because it applies universally (would they have done anything differently if Carol had been a man? I don’t think so) (also, it underlies the war ideology behind subjugating other races). And war justifies everything, of course, which is the second strongest ‘evil’ motif in the film. That’s pretty good, layered writing, in truth.
Both ‘evils’ are represented in Yon-Rogg’s and Supreme Intelligence’s characterisations, but only the latter remains abstract enough to be the literal representation of it whereas Yon-Rogg is still written with some “humanity” for the lack of a better word. He is very much conveyed as a product of his society, but not even a one-dimensional caricature of that. Sure, we do not get any insight into his inner thoughts, but not once did the details I have written out here give me the impression that Carol is as upset as she is because of betrayal by a lump of evil with no moving parts inside. I can appreciate that in an antagonistic force, because it adds to the hero’s internal confusion if their starting out premise is “friends with my enemy”. There is extreme pragmatism more than there is cruelty in the villain’s intentions. But cruelty follows anyway, because freedom and predetermination cannot not be in conflict, and very rarely does cruelty not follow when ends justify the means quite as brutally as in the case of sacrificing someone’s freedoms for another’s greater cause.
For Yon-Rogg that is not an issue, though he himself is as deprived of freedom under this ideology as Carol is. But Carol’s moral system hails from a different place.
I can relate to it and find it interesting, and not at all one-dimensional. Best of all, it is possible to build upon it.

TOMISLAV TOLSTOY; I mean, come on. Anyone who’s ever experienced him or knows even a little bit about him knows he needs to die, stat. Someone come shoot this guy in the head, he’s fucking garbage.
NIKOLAY TOLSTOY; marginally better than his son, except not, because he gave a cannibalistic psychopath custody over him just to meet his and his business partner’s end game. Nikolay Tolstoy is not only a gross parent, but also a gross human being entirely.
JACKSON FROST; Treats his drug ring like a fucking business and has a human resources department in the form of a huge guy that he lets deal with all customer complaints “like a professional”, he feels the world owes him something. Like why is he? We just don’t know.
AMIAS RHODES; Misogynist extraordinaire, I really wish he’d just fucking disappeared. This is the guy that blackmails into hacking for him — worse, he’s a good programmer himself and he knows it. He needs to be eliminated.
JOHN RYKER; Maybe not by his own doing, 100% a product of his upbringing which is essentially filled with violent abuse. Like I’m pretty sure he’s Autistic, but that can’t even redeem his actions, he’s rude, he’s condescending, he’s brutally honest, he stabs people with pens, Tomo is also his legal guardian, so you know.
JAKOB MLAKAR; So maybe he’s a brainwashed member of a mercenary group that teaches the kids they steal how to fight and lets them have 0 world experience outside of killing their targets. He’s still the irredeemable kind that fully believes that might makes right, money is good, and everything who strays from the cause is good to kill. Like his two “friends”. Trash.
AUGUSTUS BRENNAN; The kind of cop who seems to take his life and himself very seriously. Like literally, the shit he told Indiana when they were dating? Tried to change her because “he loved her but she was too abrasive and too unladylike” for him to marry. So she had to change. Obviously. Like what the fuck, dude? No.
TWENTY-ONE; Okay, Twenty-one has killed people. Like a lot of people. But the reason he’s only number eight is that when you’re not his target (boy, he’s like a dog with a bone with his contracts) he is an amazing, albeit mentally unstable individual. I wanna define him, but he’s undefinable. Take it from me, though, he’s only slightly trash.
SAMUEL GUINNESS; So Sam violently and loudly believes that his whole family are a bunch of lawless hooligans who all need to go to jail (he’s sorta right, I guess), and you’d think that’d make him a good guy, right? Except he’s fucking not. He’s a gross, manipulative, misogynistic piece of shit, he would have no qualms spitting and pissing on his father and brother’s graves, maybe his uncles’ too, and his other brothers, and probably quite a few nephews, just because they’re associated. He doesn’t even care to learn their names, he just hates them because they’re part of the family.
JACOB GUINNESS; Speaking of, Jacob Guinness does deserve Sam’s contempt. He has a lot of people in his family fooled he’s not a shady guy, but he is such a shady guy. Is he a nice guy? Absolutely. He means well. Like “for the greater good” and everything. This is simultaneously the guy that will take in kids who’re stranded homeless, and the guy who will allow him children and grandchildren to be psychological fucked in the A as a sacrifice of serving the greater good. Honestly, what the fuck, guy?
TRASH LITE
As in, not really trash, but endearing garbage, more or less.
FINN MCGINTY; Drove his professor (20+ years his senior) insane by relentlessly hitting on him during his two semesters at NYU. Practically makes sex his living, breaks hearts without meaning to because he has 0 self-worth. After he graduated, he started dating said professor when he ended up in NYC for a while. “Great butt,” according to him.
SIOBHAN MCGINTY; Seduced her grandfather’s brother-in-law’s brother relentlessly for years until he broke down, apparently has a kink for older men, not unlike her twin sister and her adoptive younger brother (see above). Gives the poor man no slack, demanded babies until she got them, and fought the entire world for her husband-then-boyfriend because especially her grandfather’s brother-in-law had a massive problem with it on the basis that he thought she was “innocent” and “eighteen-years-old” when she was twenty-five.
GIDEON GUINNESS; Super bottom. Massive, immensely bottom. Don’t be fooled by the stoic, intimidating demeanour, if you offered him ten dicks he would suck them all. Only has a big mouth @ his boyfriend (a professional dom, lol) when he wants to get his arse ruined, even tries the same with his girlfriend around his boyfriend just so he’ll make her ruin his arse. (: He is trash. Trash trash trash, cannot believe.
KING ALEXANDER; Fights. Fights everyone. If he’s not fighting someone, something’s wrong. Mostly fights his boyfriend/husband, because he fights back, and isn’t that just the greatest thrill in life? Will tell you to suck his dick, but if you actually suck his dick he will die and clip through the ground on his way through blushing, stuttering hell. Never have you met a more fighty person with social anxiety. Fight him.
BRANIMIR KALOYANOV; Has an issue with falling in love with beautiful strong WOC (cough) and also annoying the fuck out of Armenian/Greek men (cough) and sucking all the dicks. Makes drones in the form of scarabs, scorpions, and dragonflies to spy on people and also because he loves them very much. Brilliant, could be in space with aliens if he only tried, but instead he believes in Doing It For The Lulz™, it being making money and general cybercrime, Because He Can™. Super smart roboticist. Just general fail of a human being.
ELISABETH GUINNESS; Has every guy she knows wrapped around her finger and her vagina. Is proud of her Hoeness about as much as she is of her dance technique, encourages men to worship her and women to be a Hoe too (specifically with her because lbr). Breaks into her parents’ house to steal the dogs in the middle of the night Because She Can™. Top Hoe. Great Trash. Recommended.
RAFAEL ABREU; They asked me, “if nut has protein, can I just eat that instead of vitamins? It’d be cheaper, wouldn’t it?” Do you need to know more?
EMILY; Laughs at human beings. 👌
GRAHAM BELL; Knows his fiancé is a Prime Hoe™ with a libido that cannot be cured, so naturally loves working out where he can see to get him worked up, not wearing his shirt to get him worked up, inviting him to hockey practice/games to get him worked up, and generally doing everything he can to get him worked up, because it’s his most enjoyable pastime. His fiancé is also utter trash, though, and he deserves it.
MATTHEW GUINNESS; Never has there been more exclamation marks or question marks in text. Has decided the whole world is a rainbow and nothing hurts. Doesn’t know you’re hitting on him even if you’d dance in front of him naked and complimented his dick, he’d just think you’re being very nice.
