The cast is finally making their London appearance, and the Nein are back! It's... actually really wild. I don't have the space here to be wistful because we have a LOT to get to here on bingo this week.
You can grab your own card at this BingoBaker link. The call list is 48 items long, all of which are listed below the cut—there's information about potentially adding more and when I will lock this call list below, but first, some notes:
"other item taken from Trent" is for any update on who has the Ring of Warding, the Rod of Absorption, or the Mantle of Spell Resistance. Naming these items explicitly did not fit well into a square. The Ring of Telepathy does NOT count, since we already know Caleb took that.
Appearances over Scrying or a vision do count. Sending is not working, but Sending also would have counted.
If a character is listed as just a mention but they appear, the square is legal.
"other multiclass" is if any member of the Nein who is not Fjord or Veth has multiclassed.
In the event that the Nein is at least level 19, "new feat used" is legal only if we absolutely know what the feat IS. Deducing they have one by their stats does not count.
"Counterspell against Counterspell" does not need to succeed.
Unless otherwise stated, a listed spell or ability does not need to succeed, i.e. the only square that needs a success to be legal is "successful Counterspell".
"Fjord short-range teleport" is under his own power. Him being taken along with someone else's short-range teleport, i.e. Dimension Door, does not count. His Arcane Gate does count.
There is a chance I will add things before the live show starts. The call list will be locked at 6:30pm BST / 1:30pm ET / 10:30am PT. If I add anything, I will make a post about it. If you wish to play with any added squares, you can refresh your bingo card if you're playing digitally (though, remember phone etiquette!); if you are playing with a printed sheet, don't worry about it. Anti-monarchy groups are being told they have the right to protest but not to disrupt others
Anti-monarchy groups will be allowed to protest at the King’s Coronation on Saturday, security minister Tom Tugendhat has insisted.
His comments came after one group planning a demonstration on the Coronation route was warned of new laws banning “serious disruption”.
Republic, which campaigns to abolish the monarchy, accused the Home Office of sending an intimidatory message.
It says police chiefs have accepted its demonstration is lawful and peaceful.
The Public Order Act came into effect on Wednesday - and days beforehand, officials from the Home Office’s Police Powers Unit wrote two letters to Republic to list how it had tightened laws on the right to protest.
Republic is co-ordinating demonstrations across the UK and has held talks with the Metropolitan Police over a protest in London’s Trafalgar Square, as the King’s procession passes.
The group hopes up to 1,700 supporters will gather around the statue of Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, and hold yellow placards declaring “Not My King”.
A Home Office letter sent on 28 April does not mention the protest, but the unnamed official tells Republic: “I would be grateful if you could publicise and forward this letter to your members who are likely to be affected by these legislative changes.”
Graham Smith, the organisation’s chief, described that letter as “intimidatory”.
He said there had been two constructive face-to-face meetings with Scotland Yard’s public order commander, who had been entirely satisfied that the plan was legal and peaceful.
Mr Smith said: “We have gone through our plans - where we are going to be, what placards we have, and that we have no intention of doing anything disruptive. The police have repeatedly said they have no concerns about our plans and we can turn up and do what we are planning.
“The tone and the anonymity [of the 28 April letter] feels like a passive-aggressive attempt to put us off. I don’t know why the Home Office has sent this, given it’s the police’s job to police. The lawyers were perplexed why it was sent.”

He added that the complexity of the security operation for the Coronation was heightened by the presence of foreign leaders.
“It’s perfectly possible that we’re dealing with protest groups that have nothing to do with the UK, but are seeking to protest against a foreign leader who’s visiting, or seeking to make a complaint about something that’s happening hundreds or thousands of miles away,” he said.
Mr Tugendhat refused to discuss what actions could be punished at the Coronation “for fear of encouraging people to find loopholes”, but said they were introduced in response to protests in the UK becoming “disruptive” and “intrusive”.

In 2022 MPs voted to place greater restrictions on public processions if they are too noisy.
The new act goes further:
Protesters who interfere with “key national infrastructure” including roads and railways can face 12 months in jail.Anyone who fixes themselves to an object or building to create an immovable obstacle, a tactic known as “locking on”, could be jailed for six months.The law bans protesters from committing acts of “serious disruption” - meaning demonstrations which prevent people going about their day-to-day activities.Other new offences include up to three years in jail for tunnelling as part of a protest. Police will also have new powers to search people for super-glues and padlocks.The Home Office describes the laws as “sensible and proportionate measures” in response to actions by groups such Just Stop Oil and Insulate Britain that have caused “serious disruption”

unei: Please strike that last pose again Menou-san!
menou: Uhmm… which one was that again? Oh well, I’ll just go onto the next one.
unei: The next? …Ah, this one’s good too though! I’ll take lots of shots!
saki: (I was wondering what was going on, it appears Menou-san is having his photoshoot.)
(menou striking different poses while the camera flashes)
saki: (The atmosphere of each pose he makes is so different, almost like he becomes a different person. Yet… all of them look familiar…)
menou: …Hm? So you’ve been watching me from over there have you?
saki: Excuse me, I was curious as to what was going on.
menou: Come over here, I’ll be more motivated with someone else watching me.
(saki steps closer)
menou: Say, how did my poses look from your perspective?
saki: Well… I thought that they all had a different vibe, and that you really did seem like a different person each time.
menou: Ahaha, correct answer. Since I had the chance I was trying to remember and reproduce some of the roles I’ve played recently.
saki: So that was the case, I did get the feeling there was something familiar about each one.
menou: As expected, you understood. Hey I’ll strike each pose again, so try and guess which role they’re supposed to be.
saki: Huh!?
unei: That sounds interesting! I’ll try and guess too~!
menou: I’ll say a line as a hint too. Here I go~
menou (smirking): —Ivan, as long as you have that willingness, the gates of heaven will always be open.
unei: I remember hearing the name Ivan before… but which show was it from again?

menou: Oh right, we were doing a photoshoot.
unei: Please do those poses of your previous roles one more time! I’m sure it’ll help you shine in the 3rd anniversary show!
menou: Don’t wanna. You didn’t even get any of them correct Unei-kun… yawn.
saki: Menou-san, please do your best in the shoot for just a little longer!
menou: Mm… I wonder what’s suddenly made me so sleepy. Oh, it must be because of this.

Emily St John Mandel’s 2014 breakout novel, Station Eleven, told the story of a global pandemic that originates in the former Soviet Union and decimates life on Earth. A page-turner with an eerie, elegiac quality, it won the Arthur C Clarke award and was widely praised for its fine storytelling and for the unsettling glimpses it gave of our world plausibly unravelling into chaos and the dystopian existence beyond it. Five years after it came out, and with an HBO adaptation in the pipeline, it acquired an aura of creepy prophecy as Covid-19 made us all fluent in the language of pandemics. What made the book’s apparent prescience doubly strange is that one of Mandel’s hallmarks as a writer is noticing the echoes between apparently chance events: the links between distant characters, motifs from art recurring in life, and the historical echoes of long-separated incidents. The coincidence of a book meaningfully anticipating a current predicament could be one of her novelistic devices.
An interest in complex patterns animates Mandel’s new novel, Sea of Tranquility, though, as in Station Eleven, the naturalism and specificity of its opening gives little idea of the strangeness to come. The story begins in 1912 as a young British immigrant, Edwin St John St Andrew, is embarking on a new life in Canada. He’s one of the so-called “remittance men” – wastrel sons of upper-class British families who were packed off to the colonies on a private income to keep them out of further trouble. One day, as Edwin wanders in the woods of western Canada, he undergoes a paranormal experience whose meaning he cannot begin to fathom.
A few dozen pages on, the scene suddenly shifts and we are plunged into the present. At a concert in New York a composer is playing an old piece of video that seems to show a version of whatever Edwin found in the forest. Now that we’re invested in the mystery, the weirdness can really begin. There are two subsequent interwoven storylines. One unfolds in the 23rd century, where a writer called Olive Llewellyn, who was born and raised on a lunar colony, is visiting Earth on a book tour. The other plot strand takes place 200 years later, when an investigator named after a character in one of Olive Llewellyn’s novels begins to piece together the connections between all these different lives.

This summary doesn’t do the book justice, but further exposition would, I think, spoil the novel for readers. Hugely ambitious in scope, yet also intimate and written with a graceful and beguiling fluency, Sea of Tranquility even invokes minor characters from another of Mandel’s previous novels, The Glass Hotel, as it gradually shows how all these incidents and people are part of one vast and fractured world.
Sea of Tranquility continues the good work done by Station Eleven in seducing new readers to speculative fiction. In fact, the book uses many more out-and-out science fiction conceits – space travel, sinister scientific institutions – but with a lightness of touch, as though they are intended to be glimpsed out of the corner of an eye that’s focused on the human dramas at the book’s centre. There’s something simultaneously fresh and old-fashioned in the novel’s comfort with omniscient narration, and its relaxed style that can swoop between the history of a lunar colony and the most intimate moments of a human life. It conveys the vertiginous sense of a reality that transcends a single existence and feels simultaneously poignant, celebratory and uncanny.
One of the quietest yet most compelling sections concerns Olive’s experiences on her book tour. As she promotes her novel, Marienbad, about a pandemic, a real pandemic is devastating the 23rd-century Earth and its lunar colonies. “I’ve never been interested in autofiction,” Olive tells one of her interviewers. This feels like a wink at the reader. It’s hard not to see Olive as a portrait of the author, catapulted to fame by the unexpected success of her novel, baffled and distressed by the sudden topicality of her research into pandemics, and fretting over the quibbles of impatient readers. “‘I was so confused by your book,’ a woman in Dallas said. ‘There were all these strands, narratively speaking, all these characters, and I felt like I was waiting for them to connect, but they didn’t ultimately … It just ended.’”
This sounds like a real – if unfair – criticism of Station Eleven. It also seems to have stung: Mandel goes out of her way to make it not true of Sea of Tranquility, which conscientiously draws together all its threads for an elegant and definitive conclusion.
Also on her tour, Olive gives a lecture about post-apocalyptic literature in which she tries to explain humanity’s fascination with the genre. “I think it’s a kind of narcissism,” she says. “We want to believe that we’re uniquely important, that we’re living at the end of history, that now, after all these millennia of false alarms, now is finally the worst that it’s ever been, that finally we have reached the end of the world.” It sounds plausible, but another explanation is offered, one that is both kinder and more profound. Observing a child’s grave, a character notes that to the child’s parents: “It would have felt like the end of the world.”
Just as Station Eleven seemed ultimately to be about mortality itself and how art allows us to step outside the immediate confines of our existence, Sea of Tranquility reminds us that humanity’s resting state is crisis. Someone’s world is always ending: that is the keynote of this book. And the echoes and callbacks that give it its shape reflect the ways we make our own lives meaningful.
