Trend Research

As a group we collectively decided we wanted to go in the ‘evening wear’ direction, to begin with, we had a look through some WGSN trends, that we thought we could mould our brand into.  

A forecast we came across on WGSN for AW 21/22 was called ‘Conscious Clarity’. This forecast is exploring a ‘less is more’ approach in womenswear. Classic, timeless designs & sustainable living.  We are going to be embracing simplicity, business goals are focusing on sustainable design by working with ‘beautiful restraints’. Minimalist concepts impact a majority of perennial trends.

Within this forecast, there were 3 trends that we could manipulate to fit our chosen direction.  

Speak Easy Style

‘The concept: The Great Gatsby meets #minimalist glamour in this slinky, vintage-inspired trend. The relaxed sensibilities of 1920s column silhouettes provide the ease-of-wear factor, making it the perfect trend to move on #bourdoirdressing. Choose cellulosic and peace silks for eco-friendly solutions.

Details: Keep print to a minimum to let the details shine. Experiment with statement straps and embellishment inserts, and take a mono-material approach to details to improve the circular use-and-reuse potential of your designs.

Innovation: Source repurposed fabrics and trims. Buy into one-of-a-kind vintage originals and test out a rentable capsule.

Prim & Proper

‘The concept: As #newfemininty reaches mass appeal, focus on a softer, more subtle offshoot of this trend, which is rooted in classicism and nostalgia. British brand Emilia Wickstead is a key driver of this look.

Silhouette: Draw in the waistline and take inspiration from Dior’s 1947 New Look, as the V&A's exhibition, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams makes history as its most-visited show.

Details: Experiment with scoop and sweetheart necklines, and expose the shoulders. This look is reaching classic status with fashion editors and influencers alike.

‘The concept: As drape and ruching reach mass appeal, create new volume and surface interest to move on these techniques. Take inspiration from forward-thinking examples by Jil Sander and Le 17 Septembre.

Textiles & materials: Create tightly textured, dense constructions via crinkle and heat-set surfaces. Asymmetric drape and voluminous #bubblehems add femininity and drama. Be responsible and choose eco viscose. Opt for undyed fibres and colour-grown cotton.

After we had a browse through the WGSN forecast, we all related to the Speak Easy Style trend the most, we felt it inspired us, enabling us to manipulate it fit our brand aesthetic. We all agreed the trend was visually appealing, we appreciated the feminity, softness & elegance of the trend, along with the 1920′s inspired direction, we could visualise us modernising this by only using minor elements from the 1920′s.
