The Quest for Buddhism (88)
Buddhacharita, Chapter 15: 'The First Turning of the Wheel' - Depiction of the Middle Way (Ref) and the Eightfold Path (Ref2)
The Buddhacharita is a Buddhist epic attributed to Ashvaghosha (80-150 CE, an ancient Indian Buddhist monk). The following is a translation of the text in Sanskrit:
'O Bhikkhus, do not speak to a respectful Arhat out of respect and according to your former habits. Respect and condemnation are the same thing to me, but let me turn you back from your vices.
See the two wings of the fools' indulgence, exhausting themselves and obsessing over the objects of their sensitivities, as negligent and not the path to immortality.
For example, here, the darkness of the night is brought to extinction by the lamp, but not by sprinkling water to extinction. Similarly, the darkness of ignorance is brought to extinction by the fire of the intellect, but not by the fatigue of the body.
For example, a fire-seeker does not get fire by chopping and tearing a piece of wood, but he gets fire by rubbing that same piece of wood in the right way. Similarly, one gains immortality from correct yoga, not from physical fatigue.
And he whose mind is overcome by dust (rajas) and darkness (tamas), and who is attached to the objects of lust without interest, will not attain fulfilment even in the worldly art of gain (arthaniti). Even in the vairagyavidhi (procedure of covetousness), which is the opposite of the world, he will not be able to attain fulfilment.
For example, there is no recovery for a person who is ill and eats the wrong food. In the same way, how can there be tranquillity for one who is sick with ignorance and is attached to the objects of lust?
For example, there is no stillness in a fire that stays on dry ground and is stirred by the wind. Similarly,there is no tranquillity in the heart that is subject to greed and on the ground of the object of lust.
I have renounced these two extremes and have attested to another path as the middle one (Middle Way), which is ultimately a guide to subdue suffering and to be at peace, happy and contented.
The path (1) shines with the rays of sunlight of right view, (2) is drawn by the wheel of pure thought, (3) has the rightly spoken word as its refuge, (4) has the pleasures of the amusement park hut through good deeds, (5) has a great harvest through life without blame, (6) has strength and followers through right action, (7) is everywhere protected by the fortress of right remembrance and (8) has the floor and seat of samādhi as its dwelling place.
Thus, here, this supreme path of the eight branches carries man out of death, old age and disease, and he who has been carried out of it and has done all he has to do will not go round again in this world or in the next.

ブッダチャリタ第15章「初転法輪」〜中道・八正道(参照)の描写
『ブッダチャリタ』とは、馬鳴(めみょう、梵: アシュヴァゴーシャ、紀元後80年頃~150年頃、古代インドの仏教僧侶)の著作とされる仏教叙事詩である。以下、本文(梵語)の翻訳:
「比丘たちよ、尊敬する阿羅漢に対する尊敬の念から、かつての習慣に従って話してはならない。私には尊敬と非難は同じことであるが、汝たちを私が不徳から引き戻してあげよう。」
愚か者たちが耽っている、自分を疲労させることと、感官の対象に執着することとの、両翼は、怠慢であり、不死に至る道ではないと見なさい。
苦行と称される身体の疲労によって、乱された心が傷つけられる時、人は決して世間的な理解すら知ることはないであろう。ましてや感官を超えた真実の道を知ることにおいてをや。
例えば、ここで、灯火によって夜の闇は滅に至るが、水を撒くことによっては滅に至らない。同様に、知性の火によって無知の闇は消滅に至るが、身体の疲労によっては消滅に至らない。
例えば、火を求める人が、木片を切り刻み、引き裂いても火を得ないが、その同じ木片を正しい方法で摩擦すれば火を得る。 同様に、人は正しいヨーガから不死を得るのであって、身体の疲労からではない。
また、塵(ラジャス)と闇(タマス)に心が打ち負かされて 、利なき愛欲の対象に執着する者は、世間における利の処世術(アルタニーティ)においても成就を得ることはできぬ。ましてや、世間とは真逆の離貪の手順(ヴァイラ-ギャヴィディ)においてをや。
例えば、病に冒されて、間違った食物を食べる人に、決して快復がない。 同様に、無知の病に冒され、愛欲の対象に執着する者に、どうして寂静があろうか。
例えば、乾いた地にとどまって、風にあおられた火に静まりがない。同様に、貪欲につき従われ、愛欲の対象という地にある心に静まりはない。
私はこの両極端を放棄して、その真ん中としての別な道、すなわち、究極的に苦しみを鎮める導き手であり、安穏であり、幸福で、息災なる〔道〕 を証得したのだ。
その道は、(1) 正しい見解という太陽光線で輝き、(2) 清らかな思惟の車に引かれ、(3) 正しく語られた言葉を精舎とし、(4) 善い行いによる遊園小屋の楽しみを持ち 、(5) 非難されない生活による大豊作を持ち、(6) 正しい行動による力と従者を持ち、(7) どこでも正しい念の砦に守られ、(8) 三昧という床と座を居住地としているのである。
このように、ここにおいて、八支よりなるこの最高の道は、人を死と老いと病から運び出すものであり、それから運び出されて 、すべてのなすべきことをなし終わった人は、再びこの世やあの世を巡ることはない。

exciting find for people interested in Buddhist lit: found a PDF of Patrick Olivelle’s translation of Asvaghosa’s Buddhacarita.
it’s one of my favorite versions of the Buddha’s life and that translation is the best imo. Much more significant reasons to give it a look: Asvaghosa was the premier Sanskrit language poet/dramatist pre-Kalidasa, who offers a lot in homage to him, and Ambedkar notes him specifically as an influence for his “The Buddha and His Dhamma” (from his preface: “I would particularly like to mention Ashvaghosha's Buddhavita[=Buddhacharita], whose poetry no one can excel. In the narrative of certain events I have even borrowed his language.”)
this translation is ime difficult to find and is expensive and shouldn’t be locked away to academes. I’m grateful to an old teacher for leaving it to me. It’s rare to have an opportunity to recommend it when I can’t physically loan my copy out so
(it looks longer than it is, it’s a bilingual edition and it’s poetry. really lovely)

This piece of artwork is inspired by the 1st Century Indian Buddhist Poet Ashwaghosha's narration on the birth of Buddha. The legendary poet, in his finely crafted Buddhacharita (autobiography of Buddha) describes how heavens showered flowers... To put it in his own words, "..two pure streams of water fell down from heaven upon his head with piles of Mandāra flowers" This part stanza was part of the Sanskrit lesson I studied in my high-school. The painting on wide canvas is acrylic with the effect of spray and knife work both. The painting has great size of 48 inches in width and 29 inches in height. However, I am giving you the dimensions here leaving 4 inch margin on both since this would look great as a stretched canvas. I am sorry. This photograph is not to scale. The beginning of Bhakti
Kanishka was the most famous Kushana ruler, who ruled around 1900 years ago. He organised a Buddhist council, where scholars met and discussed important matters. Ashvaghosha, a poet who composed a biography of the Buddha, the Buddhacharita, lived in his court.
Mahayana Buddhism, a new form of Buddhism, developed, which had two distinct features. Earlier, the Buddha’s presence was shown in sculpture by using certain signs. For instance, his attainment of enlightenment was shown by sculptures of the peepal tree. Later, statues of the Buddha were made in Mathura and in Taxila.
Bodhisattvas were supposed to be persons who had attained enlightenment and after attaining enlightenment, they could live in complete isolation and meditate in peace. But, they remained in the world to teach and help other people. In India, Buddhism was spread to the western and eastern regions, where dozens of caves were hollowed out of hills for monks to live in.
Some of these caves were made on the orders of kings and queens, others by merchants and farmers, located near passes through the Western Ghats.
Buddhism also spread south-eastwards, to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and other parts of Southeast Asia including Indonesia. The older form of Buddhism, known as Theravada Buddhism was more popular in these areas.
The Chinese Buddhist pilgrims, Fa Xian, came to the subcontinent about 1600 years ago, Xuan Zang and I-Qing, came about 50 years after Xuan Zang. They came to visit places associated with the life of the Buddha as well as famous monasteries.
Each of these pilgrims wrote of the dangers they encountered on their travels, which took years, of the countries and the monasteries that they visited, and the books they carried back with them.
Xuan Zang, took the land route back to China. He carried back statues of the Buddha made of gold, silver and sandalwood, and over 600 manuscripts loaded on the backs of 20 horses. Over 50 manuscripts were lost when the boat on which he was crossing the Indus capsized. He spent the rest of his life translating the remaining manuscripts from Sanskrit into Chinese.
During this time, the worship of certain deities Siva, Vishnu, and goddesses such as Durga, gained importance in Hinduism. These deities were worshipped through Bhakti, an idea that became very popular. Bhakti means a person’s devotion to his or her chosen deity.
In the sacred book of Hindus, the Bhagavad Gita, the idea of Bhakti is present, which is included in the Mahabharata. In this Krishna the God, asked Arjuna, his devotee and friend, to abandon all dharmas and take refuge in him, as only he can set Arjuna free from every evil. This form of worship widely spread to different parts of the country.
Those who followed the system of Bhakti emphasised devotion and individual worship of a god or goddess, rather than the performance of elaborate sacrifices.
According to this system of belief, if a devotee worships the chosen deity with a pure heart, the deity will appear in the form in which he or she may desire. It could be thought of as a human being, lion, tree or any other form.

Transliteration: na caiṣa dharmo vanae eva siddhaḥ pure’pi siddhirniyatā yatīnāṃ । buddhiśca yatnaśca nimittaṃ atra vanaṃ ca liṅgaṃ ca hi bhīrucihnaṃ ॥
English Translation: Attainment is not only achieved in forests, the salvation of ascetics can be accomplished even in a city; thought and effort are the true means. The forest and the badge are only coward’s signs.
Hindi Translation: उद्धार केवल जंगलों में ही नहीं होता, एक शहर में भी तपस्वियों के मोक्ष को पूरा किया जा सकता है; विचार और प्रयास ही सही साधन हैं। जंगल और उपाधि केवल कायरता के संकेत हैं।
