doing my remedial tf hw [rewatching the ep i feel asleep during]
anyway u can really increase u understanding and appreciation for what goes in to Making A Show Good. by watching bw, arm and en.ergon. which maybe thats not what u want from watching a show. maybe u just want a show that IS good. well too bad.
like okay. bw, late 90s cgi cartoon [an expensive one tho, or so the wiki keeps telling me]. arm, 02 anime but first unified producted between the 2 toys companies. En, 04 cgi anime. same voice cast for all em [as dubbers in the 2nd two]. En being the sequel to arm so they really ought to be the same characters even, tho in pratice its like... ehhhhhh.
like just constantly thinking about, okay what conditions are the VAs performing under, script writers/translators. how that all affects performance
and ofc animation, well does it need fidelity? verisimilitude?? what makes something look cool? or funny? or emotive, or affecting.
and like. these all kinda can just lead u to shitting on en for looking like ass and being made on the fast (and possibly cheap?? idk.)
BUT THEN u also get to think about the designs themselves, which, toy companies. not really remotely the show makers faults [probably?] and in terms of what could have been done to best SERVE the show being made OR the toys in production like. and ill tell u what it wasnt. of making the most bulky greebly design ethos so far and trying o directly translate that as accurately as possible.
cause its just. these 'cell shaded' black outlines behemouths with maybe very little rigging? they cant emote at all. the lip flaps are some kinda 2d thing, and if they need to move their eyes or jaws u know, facial expressiony things, they can add 2d DRAWN shots [not like. more than 3 an ep] for that...
also they dont seem to be doing cgi in the way id think of it like. 3d models in a space with a camera? i think its all or mostly composit? [so they dont get the befits of say, size consistency]
like its kinda notable bw, is the cgi show, and also the era where, there not fucking CARS! theres a lot more... i mean a guy who has two cheetah legs sticking off his back is... weird... but at least his shoulders arent like shot compostionally impedingly wide cause they are the tires and suspension for a truck? u feel? the one character model who IS a vehicle is infact, the stand out for just kinda. weirder, interactable challenges. his sheer Biggness at least IS absolutely reflected as. not a plot point but. story point. he cant inhabite the same spaces as the other characters. they really block out those interactions in a way to show that instead of fudging it.
BUT ALSO like. i dont like the pure like. DESIGNS of arm that much, they DO have a lot, big... hmm i wanna say maximalism [which. lol. not be confused with maximals... which is what u call auto.bots when they are. yes. animals] but its 2d animated with such swag and style [mostly. it was ALSO a rushed production(>_> yikes)] like. the design of what im looking at is SUPERCEEDED by HOW it is presented? ig? or that also they CAN just fudge things. THATS WHAT ANIMATION IS FORRRRR. ohhh who cares what poses this guy could actually make, or how that would effect the camera shot. just kinda. u know. make it cool. make it LOOK GOOD.
and anyway ironies of ironies. a cool picture that is NOT what the toy looks like, but like, at least has its spirit, its probably more likely to make u want the toy, or have. fond appreciation for it lets say. not even getting into like. interesting story and character work that makes/manipulates u into wanting the thing cause like ohhhhhh thats my guy. u know. toyetic media things. bloribofication under capitalism.

What was it about Mass Effect, and BioWare in general, that drew you in and made you such a fan?
Hey there anon, Big Question Monday huh? Kinda surprised I’m being asked this stuff tbh, who gives a crap what I think in such broad terms? :D not that I don’t appreciate it, don’t take this the wrong way! I just talk a lot about my love for Mass Effect and each time I’m asked point-blank I tend to give different answers.
It just was this perfect cocktail of writing, aesthetic choices, mechanics, and genre tropes in the perfect moment in my life to maximize its impact; I love soft science fiction, I love ensemble stories, I love the notion of space exploration, of visiting uncharted alien worlds, of experiencing a tailored longform tale across several installments; I love third-person RPG gameplay mechanics, I love dialogue and relationship systems brought in as major game pillars, I love character arcs serving the story ethos and creating satellite parables around the main hero, I love syd mead-esque choices in the design language, I love the total abandon of tonal consistency in favor of real heart, I love the instrumental freedom in its musical score, I love cool ladies in space armor trash-talking ancient squid monsters, et cetera et cetera. It’s hard to pin down. Again, big question :D The ME games did all of the aforementioned stuff at least semi-well and then coalesced them pretty damn near perfectly.
As for Bioware at large, I know I can sound like their studio fanatic but I pretty much love two of their franchises, not everything they put out. Like I was looking forward to Anthem, but then yannow. And I really dislike MMORPGs and not about to force myself to play one just because certain people from BW made it. It’s all choices! I love the company because they happen to have made a couple of my favorite game series. And uh. They paid me a few times. Can’t deny that was nice of them and played a part in my biases.
I think I went on long enough. Is there something specific you wanted to ask nonnie? This all felt a little vague.

Problems
So next I had far too much to deal with in very little time. Still, with everyone going mad around me with the pressure of exams I was keeping it cool, emailing a crazy number of companies, asking if any of them would be interested at all. I had one reply and he said no. I eventually started to get some funding together with more local contacts, friends of friends, my school, and my life savings. With two weeks to go, I decided it was time to get a bike. Might be helpful for cycling around the world. I was going to go with a Trek Emonda, but sadly the staff in my local shop started to get upset with me, blaming me for getting the bike muddy when I, in fact, had nothing to do with the whole situation! So off to BW Cycling I went. I bought my first MTB off of them, a proper shop, run by an Olympian and a Commonwealth athlete. I ordered a Cervelo R5. One of the lightest factory bikes you can buy, with a host of Grand Tour Stage wins under its belt, being ridden by some of the fastest men around. Definitely not designed for long distance endurance riding, with luggage as well! But I had my ethos and I was going to stick to it - stay light. I’ve always packed light, extra stuff just adds complication and faff. Compared to some peoples 60kg setups, my whole lot added up to just 15 - including the bike! I’ll be adding a kit list separately.
My next big problem was where on earth was I going!? Europe was my first port of call, but after a whole load of mapping and route setting, I threw it all away. Following a pub trip with dad, the world was brought up. I showed him my circle around Europe, and he said; “if you stretch it out that's basically the world!” He was only 20,000km off. So with very little time left I chose a rough route, basically dot to dotting some major places that I’d to visit, and then made the rest up as I went along. How exciting.

Melbourne: Acoffee Is A Coffee Showroom In Collingwood
Sometimes when I hear of another cafe opening in Melbourne, the skeptic in me often wonders: is there even space for more in this town? There do seem to be more and more cafes popping up that do pretty much the same thing, but it’s refreshing when something different actually comes along. Enter Acoffee. Walking along Sackville Street in the inner-northern suburb of Collingwood, Acoffee is located within an eclectic mix of a brewery, a mechanic, a nursery, and housing.
Acoffee, which opened in April 2017, is a strikingly minimal space with one not-so-simple focus: coffee. The Acoffee brand began as a stand-alone roastery close to a year before the Collingwood space opened, when Byoung-Woo Kang (known as BW around Melbourne, formerly a roaster at Market Lane) set out on his own, turning beans brown on his brand-new Probatone 12 in a corner of the Sensory Lab production facility in Port Melbourne after his initial space fell through.
Over time, through supplying folks such as Slater St. Bench and Little Rogue, a unique partnership was formed with Frankie Tan, Nick Chen, Clay Tobin, and Joshua Crasti, which led to the collaborative opening of the Collingwood location (and the permanent home for Acoffee’s roasting operations).
Designed by the team of owners themselves—and with architectural and building experience and insight from Crasti specifically—Acoffee was transformed from an empty warehouse shell to a purposeful coffee haven, echoing the simple and transparent nature of the company’s goals. This process led to a design aesthetic that is largely minimal with one long white bench down the middle, encompassing the espresso machine, filter coffee brewing, and seating. Upon entering the space, this long line leads your eye toward the coffee roaster and the green storage at the back (sourced from Melbourne Coffee Merchants, Cafe Imports, Shared Source, and Caravela), making it incredibly clear what the focus of Acoffee is.
Talking to BW, it’s clear that every element of the place is incredibly deliberate. “A lot of people think of this place like a cafe, but it’s actually not—it’s a showroom where we showcase our product,” he says. “This is meant to be a place where people can enjoy our product and enjoy themselves as well and have a seat and do some work. So I’m hoping that this is a place where you can focus and just go into yourself.”
The brand design and packaging for Acoffee’s retail offering was done in collaboration with Remy Ventura Horta with a goal to keep the information to the essentials and nothing more. That same intention translated into the starting point for the Collingwood location’s operations.
Here, the offering stays in line with the aesthetic and is minimal—espresso coffee is brewed using a La Marzocco Linea PB (flanked by Victoria Arduino Mythos One grinders), while filter coffee is brewed exclusively using Hario V60s and Baratza Forte grinders. Pastries come from Penny for Pound in Richmond, with unique savory treats in the cabinet from Kolache Cravings in Preston, including delightful Czech-inspired items such as bread buns with fillings like pulled pork, or even ham and cheese.
This simple but deliberate ethos has gone over well with the busy Melbourne coffee world, with Acoffee showing up as guest coffee at places such as Lune Croissanterie and Market Lane Coffee, and Collingwood locals (among those further afield) finding their way there regularly.
“People come in here, and they don’t really see much, but to make it work we pay attention to a lot of the details,” says BW. “We just wanted to do something that we could do well, and we could do better.”
Acoffee is located at 30 Sackville St, Collingwood. Visit their official website and follow them on Instagram.
