Vagar durante toda una noche por

Toledo, borracho y en completa soledad.

No lavarse durante la estancia.

Acudir a la ciudad una vez al año.

Comíamos casi siempre en tascas, como la Venta de Aires, donde siempre pedíamos tortilla a caballo (con carnes de cerdo) y una perdiz y vino blanco de Yepes.

(We almost always ate in taverns, like Venta de Aires, where we always asked for a tortilla on horseback (with pork) and a partridge and white wine from Yepes.)

(Buñuel, like Lorca and Dalí, had been fascinated by costumes since childhood, and the troupe's enthusiasm for this was contagious. Members of the order paraded around Toledo in the most outlandish and sometimes outrageous outfits. Buñuel gave free rein to his compulsive need to disguise himself as a priest….)

(I reminded Buñuel of those phantasmagorical nights in Toledo, as well as some of his ferocious pranks, among others, that of throwing, at dawn, large buckets of water under the door of the cells where Federico, Pepín Bello or Dalí slept... glorious in the Madrid Student Residence!

》 A pesar del rigor para ser admitido, yo lo fui ese año. Fundada hacía algún tiempo por aquel grupo de amigos residentes, el principal deber de sus cofrades consistía en vagar, sobre todo de noche, por la maravillosa y mágica ciudad del Tajo (…) Cumpliendo cláusulas severas del reglamento de la orden, los hermanos dejaban la posada cuando ya del reloj de la catedral había caído la una, hora en que todo Toledo parece estrecharse, complicarse aún más en su fantasmagórico y mudo laberinto. Aquella noche de mi iniciación en los secretos de la orden salimos a la calle, llevando todos los hermanos, menos yo, ocultas bajo la chaqueta, las sábanas de dormir, sacadas con sigilo de las camas de nuestros cuartos. Luis Buñuel actuaría de cofrade mayor. El acto poético y misterioso preparado para la madrugada, iba a consistir en hacer revivir toda una teoría de fantasmas por el atrio y la plaza de Santo Domingo el Real. Después de un tejer y destejer de pasos entre las grietas profundas del dormido Toledo, vinimos a parar al sitio del convento en el instante en que sus defendidas ventanas se encendían, llenándose de velados cantos y oraciones monjiles. Mientras se sucedían los monótonos rezos, los cofrades de la hermandad, que me habían dejado solo en uno de los extremos de la plaza, amparados entre las columnas del atrio, se cubrieron de arriba abajo con las sábanas, apareciendo, lentos y distanciados por diversos lugares, blancos y reales fantasmas de otro tiempo, en la callada irrealidad de la penumbra toledana.

(Despite the rigor to be admitted, I was admitted that year. Founded some time ago by that group of resident friends, the main duty of its brothers was to wander, especially at night, through the wonderful and magical city of the Tagus (...) Fulfilling severe clauses of the order's regulations, the brothers left the inn when one o'clock had already fallen on the cathedral's clock, a time when all of Toledo seems to shrink, to become even more complicated in its phantasmagorical and mute labyrinth. That night of my initiation into the secrets of the order we went out into the street, carrying all the brothers, except me, hidden under the jacket, the bed sheets, quietly taken from the beds in our rooms. Luis Buñuel would act as the older brother. The poetic and mysterious act prepared for the early morning was going to consist of reviving a whole theory of ghosts through the atrium and the square of Santo Domingo el Real. After a weaving and unweaving of steps between the deep cracks of sleeping Toledo, we came to rest on the site of the convent at the moment that its defended windows lit up, filling themselves with veiled chants and monkish prayers. While the monotonous prayers continued, the brothers of the brotherhood, who had left me alone at one end of the square, sheltered between the columns of the atrium, covered themselves from top to bottom with the sheets, appearing, slowly and at a distance from various places, white and real ghosts of another time, in the quiet unreality of Toledo's gloom.)
