darkest.hue: Trigger warning: mentions of extreme violence against women and girls
Part 1/3 (more content to come on this matter)
Note: Although it should go without saying, here are some obvious truths: hip-hop the genre is not innately violent and misogynistic and neither are Black man. Also, hip-hop is not the only genre with abusive men, and the music industry is not the only industry in entertainment with abusive men.
For years now, Black women have been calling for hip- hop to have its "Me Too" reckoning (see recommended readings). Calls have recently reignited following singer Cassie's civil lawsuit against ex-boyfriend Diddy, where she alleges years of r*pe, domestic violence, and sex tr*fficking.
Many were rightfully stunned, horrified, and heartbroken by Cassie's vulnerable account, with many demanding the entire industry be finally held accountable for its pattern of violence against women. But is any of this really that surprising when we consider the way mainstream hip-hop talks about women, particularly Black women? Is it all that surprising when we consider the toxic loyalty and blind allegiance male rappers have to each other? Or the wealth of resources these men have at their disposal to control and harm women all the while flying under the radar? Or the world's disregard for the safety and protection of their Black women/girl victims?
Let's discuss.

the interview is from 2019. you can read about it here:
tasha k has reuploaded the interview in light of the lawsuit:
youtube
however she's recently been exposed as a transphobe, so i've uploaded an alt link to vimeo in case u don't want to watch hers:
vimeo
please spread the word abt cassie and gina/virginia, these women (along with the rest of diddy's victims) deserve justice.
UPDATE!!
cassie and diddy have settled just a day after she filed the lawsuit:
cassie is 100% valid for settling, i cannot imagine how tiring it would be to go thru the legal proceedings whether or not it was taken to trial.
but it's important that we don't forget. we don't let this die. diddy still needs to be held accountable for everything he's done. that does not go away w forking over 30 ms.

Cheyenne Roundtree and Nancy Dillon at Rolling Stone:
OFFICIALS RAIDED TWO of Sean Combs‘ homes on Monday, a law enforcement source confirmed to Rolling Stone, as part of a federal sex trafficking investigation. Led by Homeland Security, the raid was carried out just four months after the rap mogul’s ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie, accused Combs of sex trafficking. Helicopters and agents were seen swarming Combs’ Los Angeles mansion on Monday afternoon. Footage of the scene appeared to show some men — later identified as Combs’ sons Justin and King — detained and waiting outside the Holmby Hills house. Officials were also present at Combs’ Miami residence. Combs was in Florida at the time of the raid, according to NBC News, and officials reportedly seized his phones before the Bad Boy Records executive was scheduled to leave for a trip to the Caribbean.
A source tells Rolling Stone four Jane Does and one John Doe already sat for interviews with Southern District of New York investigators for a probe related to alleged sex trafficking, domestic violence and racketeering. More interviews are scheduled, the source said. “Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners. We will provide further information as it becomes available,” a Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson said in a statement. Rolling Stone has contacted Combs for comment.
Douglas Wigdor, who represents Cassie Ventura and a Jane Doe accuser, says in a statement provided to Rolling Stone, “We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.” Attorney Tyrone Blackburn, who represents two accusers, music producer Rodney Jones and Liza Gardner, tells Rolling Stone, “It’s about damn time. Sometimes justice delayed is not justice denied, so long as justice ultimately arrives.” Jones sued Combs last month for sexual assault, harassment, and not compensating him for work on the Grammy-nominated The Love Album. Gardner filed suit in November, alleging Combs and singer-songwriter Aaron Hall took turns raping her following an Uptown Records event in 1990.
[...]
R&B singer Cassie filed a bombshell complaint against Combs on Nov. 16 alleging he subjected her to vicious beatings, sex trafficking, and rape. In her 35-page filing that started with a bright red “trigger warning,” Cassie claimed Combs punched, kicked, and “stomped” on her and forced her to have drug-fueled intercourse with male sex workers during arrangements he dubbed “freak offs.” In a statement, Combs’ lawyer said the lawsuit was a financial shakedown “riddled with baseless and outrageous lies.” (Diddy reached a private settlement with Cassie one day later.) One week later, as New York’s Adult Survivors Act was set to expire, two more women stepped forward on Thanksgiving Day with similarly disturbing claims against Combs. The second accuser alleged Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her when she was a Syracuse University student in 1991. The woman claimed Combs filmed the incident and showed the video to others in an act described as “revenge porn.” Through a rep, Combs denied the allegation. “This last-minute lawsuit is an example of how a well-intentioned law can be turned on its head. (This) 32-year-old story is made up and not credible. Mr. Combs never assaulted her, and she implicates companies that did not exist. This is purely a money grab and nothing more,” the spokesperson said.
The third lawsuit was from Gardner, who said in the suit she was 16 years old at the time of the alleged assault. She further claimed that a day later, Combs turned “irate and began assaulting and choking” her until she almost “passed out” because he was worried she might divulge what happened. “These are fabricated claims falsely alleging misconduct from over 30 years ago and filed at the last minute,” a Combs spokesperson said of Gardner’s lawsuit. “This is nothing but a money grab.” In early December, a fourth accuser alleged Combs’ former Bad Boy president Harve Pierre and a third man gang raped her at Combs’ New York recording studio in 2003 when she was 17 years old. Combs has denied any wrongdoing in each case. Still, he stepped down from the chairmanship of his Revolt TV media company last year as more than a dozen companies fled his e-commerce platform. In January, liquor giant Diageo cut him loose in a private settlement under which Combs will no longer be a joint owner of the tequila brand DeLeón or have any ties to Cîroc vodka.
Two of Sean Combs (aka (P.) Diddy)'s homes, in LA and Miami, got raided by Homeland Security as part of a federal sex trafficking investigation into the rapper.

I stand with Casandra Ventura.
“After years in silence and darkness,” Ms. Ventura said in a statement, “I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships.”

However, one day later, they reached a settlement.
Sean Combs and the singer Cassie have reached a settlement just one day after she filed an explosive lawsuit accusing the hip-hop mogul of rape and numerous instances of physical abuse.
The parties announced on Friday evening that they had reached an agreement to resolve the case, though they disclosed no details about the terms of the settlement.
“I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control,” Cassie, whose full name is Casandra Ventura, said in a statement. “I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”
In a statement, Mr. Combs said: “We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs and Casandra “Cassie” Ventura have reached a settlement one day after the singer filed a lawsuit against him, accusing the music mogul of rape, sex trafficking, domestic violence and more in New York.
On Friday, Diddy, 54, and the “Me & U” singer, 37, announced they resolved the claims in the lawsuit to their "mutual satisfaction," they said. The parties added that there will be no further details about the terms of the agreement released publicly.
“I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control,” Ventura said in a statement. “I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”
Her attorney, Douglas Wigdor, said, “I am very proud of Ms. Ventura for having the strength to go public with her lawsuit. She ought to be commended for doing so.”

A reality television show about the family of Sean "Diddy" Combs was scrapped at Hulu following multiple lawsuits accusing the music mogul of sexual assault, according to Variety.
A spokesperson for Disney told NBC News the "show was in the nascent stages and is not currently in production."
The show had a working title of "Diddy+7" — in reference to his seven children — and was being produced by James Corden’s production company Fulwell 73, Variety reported. NBC News reached out to Fulwell 73 for comment.
A representative for Combs declined to comment on Wednesday.
The music producer and rapper has been at the center of several sexual assault lawsuits. His former girlfriend, Cassie, whose legal name is Casandra Ventura, sued last month in federal court, alleging that he raped and beat her during their relationship. The case was settled a day after it was filed. Ben Brafman, an attorney for Combs, has said that the settlement was "in no way an admission of wrongdoing."
Three other women, Joi Dickerson-Neal, Liza Gardner and a Jane Doe, have sued Combs.
The producer's companies have also been named in a lawsuit filed last month that accuses Harve Pierre, a former longtime president of Combs' record label, of sexually harassing and assaulting an assistant. Pierre, who was also named as a defendant in Jane Doe’s lawsuit, denied the allegations.
Last week, Diddy addressed the allegations in an Instagram statement.
"Enough is enough. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy,” he wrote in all-caps.
"Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday," he continued. "Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth."

[TW: Rape]
Chris Willman at Variety:
Sean Combs has been sued in federal court by Casandra Ventura, who once recorded for his Bad Boy label as Cassie, with the singer alleging that the music mogul raped and beat her over a period of a decade. In response, Combs’ team is characterizing the suit as the result of an unsuccessful shakedown attempt by a former girlfriend. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. It names Bad Boy Records and other companies affiliated with Combs as complicit in the alleged abuse. Epic Records is also named as a defendant. “After years in silence and darkness, I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships,” Ventura said in a statement released by her legal team, Douglas H. Wigdor, Meredith A. Firetog and Michael J. Willemin of Wigdor LLP. “With the expiration of New York’s Adult Survivors Act fast approaching, it became clear that this was an opportunity to speak up about the trauma I have experienced and that I will be recovering from for the rest of my life.” The suit was filed with only a week to go before the Adult Survivors Act, which allowed for an exemption to the statute of limitations, expires on Nov. 23.
Sean Combs (aka (P). Diddy) is facing a lawsuit from Casandra Ventura (aka Cassie) over accusations that Combs raped Ventura. Both Combs and Ventura were on the Bad Boy Records label. [TW: Rape]

Cassie Is Not Done With Diddy, Reportedly Working With Feds
Tumblr media
In the aftermath of Diddy’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami being raided by the Department of Homeland Security, fans and social media commentators alike floated several theories about those involved in his federal sex trafficking investigation. On Wednesday, at least one question was answered with reports that Diddy’s longtime ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura-Fine is cooperating with authorities.
According to TMZ, Cassie is “among the witnesses the feds have been in contact with in connection with the investigation.” And it appears she may have been involved in the investigation for “several weeks,” and considering the timing, could’ve “helped the feds establish probable cause to get a judge to sign off on the search warrants” that led to the raids, TMZ reports.
As previously reported by The Root, in November 2023, the “Me & U” singer filed a lawsuit against Combs alleging he raped and abused her. She also accused Diddy of forcing her to have sex with other men in acts described as a “Freak Off.”
The lawsuit also detailed a shocking incident when Cassie sought refuge at Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi’s home. In response, Combs allegedly threatened to blow up Cudi’s car and make sure the rapper/actor and his friends witnessed it. Cudi’s car later exploded in his driveway. A spokesperson for Mescudi confirmed the incident to The New York Times.
Although Diddy immediately settled with Cassie, her accusations opened the flood gates for a wave of lawsuits against the Bad Boy founder, with multiple people alleging they too were sexually harassed and assaulted by Diddy.
In his suit, music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones “claimed he recorded damning footage of Combs and his associates ‘engaging in serious illegal activity.’”
Obviously, there are no specifics on what Cassie told federal investigators, but she presumably discussed the allegations in her lawsuit and possibly provided details that haven’t been publicly revealed.
With so many lawsuits working through the system and a federal sex trafficking investigation in progress, Diddy’s reputation has arguably been changed forever, though there are still at least a few people speaking out in support of his character.

Homes linked to Sean 'Diddy' Combs raided by law enforcement
Federal agents, including officials from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), were observed conducting synchronized raids at two properties linked to rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs on Monday.
Upon inquiry about the unexpected searches, authorities disclosed that HSI New York had "carried out law enforcement actions in connection with an ongoing investigation, with support from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and local law enforcement partners." They further stated, "We will release additional information as it becomes available."
Tumblr media
Despite requests for clarification from NPR, HSI officials remained silent on whether Combs was the primary target of the raids. Combs' residence in Los Angeles, situated in the Holmby Hills neighborhood, is not directly owned by the music mogul but is reportedly associated with his company, Bad Boys Film Production, according to KTLA in Los Angeles. On the other hand, the Miami property was purchased by Combs in 2021.
Aerial footage from KTLA showed numerous SWAT vehicles stationed near a large residence, while teams of agents wearing bulletproof vests were observed removing items from the premises and questioning individuals.
The motivation behind the raids remains unclear, but they coincide with a lawsuit alleging that the 54-year-old rapper led a criminal enterprise that could be categorized as a "widespread and dangerous criminal sex trafficking organization."
As previously reported by NPR, Combs has faced multiple civil suits accusing him of sexual misconduct, including allegations of rape and assault. Combs has vehemently denied all accusations of sexual misconduct and has not faced criminal charges related to the claims.
Efforts to reach Combs' attorney, Benjamin Brafman, for comment were unsuccessful.
In November 2023, singer Cassie Ventura, who signed a 10-album deal with Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment at the age of 19, accused Combs of years of sexual misconduct, harassment, sex trafficking, and rape. Ventura's civil suit was filed in New York Superior Court under the state's Adult Survivors Act, which allows victims of sexual abuse a one-year window to file civil action regardless of the statute of limitations.
More recently, producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, who collaborated on Combs' latest release, The Love Album: Off the Grid, accused the renowned rapper of sexual assault in a civil suit filed in federal court. The lawsuit alleges that Combs repeatedly groped Jones and coerced him into soliciting sex workers and consuming illegal substances during the album's production.
The lawsuit also implicates individuals close to Combs as co-defendants. In a December Instagram post, Combs refuted the accusations against him and pledged to defend his reputation vigorously.
