On how we celebrate the ides of march, a small thought.
Context, so my understanding is that Cesar was not stabbed with knives.
He was stabbed with styli. Here is the wiki page so you can get a feel for the idea, the size.
Here's my point:
Stabbing someone with something so mundane, so small and so poorly designed to do deep damage makes the act ... so much more of a close-range, dare I say, intimate act, than a knife fight might normally be expected to be.
Here are some other points, and I'm not sure if it's me saying it or the Heignlan propaganda I absorbed in my early 20's speaking through me:
Pens should be usable as swords. Airport and courthouse security theatre via metal detectors should not work. An armed society is a polite society, people are demonically rude on the internet because they know they are free from repercussions.
Congressmen have said, (we only argue so rabidly when we're on camera because we know that's what gets attention, when the cameras are off we act like civilised and mature adults who actually care about the problems under discussion).
Something needs to change.

I don't want to be understood to be advocating bringing back duels, because I strongly believe that we should have our ideas fight and die and be replaced with improved versions of themselves. But they can only do that in an environment of mutual respect.
Could Ad Hominem attacks and/or identity politics-based arguments ("you only think X because you are Y") get an automatic ban or fail to post with a warning.
Example:
"You only like Farenheight because you are an American" might be true, but it is not helpful. It neither contributes to the question of whether Farenheight is better or worse than any alternatives. It only attempts to devalue the contribution of anyone holding/advocating a view you don't like. At best it might be a critique of a specific person's specific lack of empathy for their own subjective experience and that of everyone else.
(Context: I am an American and I use all three kinds of degrees, depending on the context, and I (uselessly) advocate for metric use at work. If the vendors don't support it, not even the Chinese vendors' English websites, what can they do?)

In “Kiss It Better,” a personal favorite of mine, Rihanna is constantly hitting refresh, trying to reload a past relationship. Rihanna’s relationships have been in the limelight for years most notably, she is known for being a survivor of domestic abuse from her relationship with Chris Brown. Weighty themes of loneliness, sex and sacrificial relationships run throughout the album, but Rihanna manages to approach them with tenderness. As the album continues, the moodiness of the lyrics only grows, augmented by her raw, mature voice. “Darling, would you mind giving my reflection a break/From the pain it’s feeling now?” Herein lies the album’s premise. In the opening and standout track, “Consideration,” Rihanna alludes to the dark side of her fame: “When I look outside my window/I can’t get no peace of mind.” The beat isn’t unlike what fans are used to hearing from Rihanna, but the lyrics are. The message is clear: fame is weighty and blinding in a way that the young Rihanna would come to understand all too quickly. That One Time Scruff Wrote an Avengers Fic (part 1)
Here we go, friends. I’ve succumbed to the world of the Avengers. This is my very first fic in this universe and already I’m screwing with canon. In this, IW never happened (it also never happened in my mind, but that’s me living in denial).
Currently, no one dies in this fic--I’ll let you know if someone does, but it certainly won’t be any major character.
The reader character is female and enhanced.
Lots of swears, but that’s my usual MO.

That One Time Masterlist

The man was a little on the short side, his greying hair slicked back, wearing a suit that probably cost more than your car. Through the window, you could see five men, in all black, trailing behind him. Were any of those men necessary for a business presentation? You had a suspicion that the extra man-power was meant to intimidate your boss into agreeing with whatever he was proposing.
Ha! If that was his plan, then this guy had no clue who he was meeting with.
The moment he walked into the room, briefcase in hand and the entourage of five, you felt the almost overwhelming urge to gag. Sitting in a rather ornate conference room next to your boss wasn’t really the proper place to lose your lunch, however, so you reached for your water and took several gulps hoping to wash the sickening feeling down.
As soon as you set your glass back down on the table, you realized Pepper was already out of her seat, shaking hands with the man that had given you the need to vomit. The moment she looked back at you to continue with the introductions, you forced yourself to stand and extend your arm in greeting.
Not surprisingly, four of the men who’d flanked this guy, all of whom oozed arrogance, declined interaction. Instead, they made their way to different points in the room to simply stand. Your suspicions had been correct.
“Thank you for joining us, ladies. We will make this meeting as short and sweet as possible.” He gestured for the two of you to take your seats again before setting his briefcase on the table in front of you. His assistant pulled out a very thick folder and scurried around the table to hand it to Pepper.
As the men began their presentation, you reached up to scratch your nose. Then you picked up your stylis and started taking notes on your tablet. Exactly three minutes later you heard Pepper clear her throat.
“Gentlemen, I can already tell you that Stark Industries is not interested in your business. We appreciate you taking time out of your day to meet with us, but we will not be moving forward.”
Immediately, you noticed the four men surrounding you take a step closer. You glanced up at Pepper and scratched the back of your hand. None of the men screamed ‘extreme hostility’ to the point of being dangerous--this was just a scare-tactic.
“If you think intimidation will work on me, you are sadly mistaken.” She stood, prompting you to stand as well. “We will see ourselves out.”
The men all moved in your direction again but she leveled a glare at them before locking eyes with the man in charge. Without another word, she calmly headed towards the door.
You followed Pepper out of the room, one pace behind and to the left. Neither of you spoke, but you watched as she almost sauntered out of the building, head held high, completely unafraid. Her murder-walk was on point.
As soon as you stepped out onto the sidewalk, Pepper nodded to David, the driver who’d been hired to chauffeur the two of you around while you were in town. Just one more thing that proved what a genius your boss was. You never would have even thought about hiring a private driver instead of accepting the transportation offered by the different companies you met with, but she always did.
“Can you believe the Napoleon Complex of that man?” Pepper scoffed as soon as David pulled the car into traffic.
“He was so nauseating to even be in the same room with. It was worse than I thought it was going to be,” you confessed, rubbing your temple. “If it’s alright with you, I think I might skip going out for dinner and try to sleep.”
“Absolutely.” She smiled gently. “I’ll order us some room service and we’ll stay in.”
“That, and some more meds sound amazing. What I took this morning isn’t cutting it.”
Snapping her fingers, she leaned towards the front of the car. “David, do you have--”
“That bottle you handed me earlier, Miss? Of course.”
To your surprise, a familiar bottle of pills was tossed from the front of the car into Pepper’s waiting hands. A tiny bottle of water followed.
“Oh my god, thank you!” You took the bottles she offered and soon you were swallowing three of the tablets. “I thought I’d left them in my suitcase.”
“You had. Didn’t want you to be without them if this went south.”
“You’re a lifesaver, Pepper.”
“That goes both ways.”
“Rise and shine,” Pepper sang gently as she shook your shoulder.
Slowly, you opened your eyes and worked your jaw a little as consciousness seeped in. “Morning,” you yawned, reaching up to rub the sleep from your eyes.
“You sleep okay?”
“No dreams.” You smiled up at her. No dream nights were the best nights. Thank goodness for your medication.
“Good to hear.” She paused. “I got a call from Tony earlier.”
“O-oh shit.” You scrambled to get up, panicking. “Did I miss putting a meeting on our schedule? I am so sor-”
“No, nothing like that.” She smiled at your reaction. “He’s apparently been very lonely.” Her eyes rolled, but you could still feel the fondness floating off of her.
“You need me to arrange a flight back to--”
Her shaking head gave you pause. “No, actually, he’s sending transportation for us.”
“Us?”
“I mean, you don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but he did ask about meeting you, so…”
“It’s just--he’s famous. People know him. He’s a celebrity. I’m not great around people as is without adding all that to the mix.”
“Tony’s a bit extravagant, but he’s really just harmless.”
“Yes, I can see Iron Man being described as harmless.”
She snorted. “Iron Man, no. Tony Stark, yeah. He’s a big teddy bear.”
You could feel her disappointment at the prospect of you declining this invitation, so you nodded, blowing out a sigh. “Fine. Let’s do this. I’ll work on rearranging your schedule and then pack.” You pushed yourself off the bed and headed towards your tablet.
She waved you off. “Already done. You just get yourself ready.”
“Seriously, Pepper? What good am I as your assistant if I never actually get to assist?” You groused playfully. You both knew just how much you assisted her even without keeping her schedule.
“You’re hilarious.” She sat on the bed and watched as you shoved your belongings back into your suitcase. “Seriously, though--if you start to get overwhelmed, you just give me the sign and I’ll get you out.”
“Thanks.”
