There were styles of music that just weren’t popular anymore. It was a fact of life that fads came and went. Pet rocks, bell bottoms, and unfortunately in this case surf rock were all considered some of these fads. The lack of popularity, however, didn’t stop the duo known as The Varsity Blondes from making the music that they wanted to make or from loving every second of it. The Varsity Blondes were comprised of two men: Griff Garrison and Brian Pillman Jr. Griff was a bright-eyed young drummer who had no former ties to the music industry. He had met Brian Pillman Jr in high school and the two had become best friends. Brian, on the other hand, had seen how major record labels could treat their talent. His old man had once been a major rockstar who had started in his own duo before making the big jump to being his own star. Brian had seen how little labels cared for the talent, hell, he had been completely changed by how little labels cared. Maybe that’s why he stuck to such a little-loved music genre. It still afforded Brian to put his heart and soul into something he loved, but it meant he didn’t have to devote himself to a label. He and Griff could remain independent, traveling from town to town to play little bars and venues for an admittedly small, but dedicated, fanbase. Coupled with some of the other bands the duo played with, sometimes the crowd could get pretty big. That’s part of why this gig felt so different. The venue was, admittedly, a little out of their usual playing area. After all, the duo was used to dive bars and small clubs. This place was, well, classy. Tara was a little beachside bar whose usual music tended to be that of smooth jazz and the lounge singer variety, which was attributed to the owner, Delilah James. Delilah was a former singer in her own right, preferring classics and softer music. It had been a mystery to Griff and Brian why they had been hired until they met Delilah’s husband: Joey Janella. Joey was also a man who enjoyed the music of a bygone era. With his little brother Dakota and their friend Marko Stunt, the trio made up the 80’s inspired punk band Air Raid Crash. The Varsity Blondes had played a festival with Air Raid Crash since before, where Joey had taken a liking to the two boys. Especially Brian. It was fitting, seeing as how Brian Sr. had inspired the three boys that made up Air Raid Crash into their own music. Brian had been setting up for the set at Tara when he first spotted her. Even from across the closed bar, her nose buried in a book, Brian could see how beautiful she looked. Long brown hair hung over her the shoulders of a youthful frame, while blue eyes scanned the pages of what Brian could only assume was a textbook. After all, no one read anything that size for fun, right? “My dude, you know who that is, right?” Griff asked as he looked up from his drumset. “An angel?” Brian gave a wide grin, “My angel?” “No, dude, that’s Scarlett James. The owner's daughter,” Griff laughed as he twirled the drumstick in his hand, “She’s, like, some college student. Studies something deep.” That was all it took for the young man to cross over to the brunette’s table. He cleared his throat to try and get her attention, but when that didn’t work, Brian simply sat across from her. Scarlett was lost to the world and there was something powerful about such a trait. He knew how he got when writing his lyrics, so he knew how intent this woman must have been on her book, “Miss James?” The young brunette was startled out of her thoughts, looking across at him with gentle blue doe eyes. She pushed a strand of brown hair behind her ear, a soft but confused smile over full lips, “Oh…we…Brian isn’t it? You’re one of the musician's mama hired for tonight?” Hearing his name from the southern accented voice only affirmed to Brian that, yes, she was an angel, “Oh, huh, yeah, that’s me! You…you know me?” “Her and papa talk very highly about your family, about you,” Scarlett gave a warm smile, using one of the napkins on the table to save her spot in her book. Brian could see the cover, a classic-looking black leather with the title inscribed in a gold cursive: Alice In Wonderland. “Don’t judge me t’ hard? I know it’s a kids' book but-“ “Is it good? I…I never read the book,” Brian admitted as he ran a large hand through his shaggy mane of blonde hair. “Oh! Yeah, it’s one of my favorites,” Scarlett admitted, a pink blush on her soft cheeks. Brian felt his heart beat faster the more he watched the gentle southerner, “You…you read a lot?” “Nah I…uh…reading isn’t my forte,” Brian shrugged his shoulder, “Nah, I like my music. Uh…you like music?” He cursed the question, of course. Everyone loved music, what kind of idiot was he. The light giggle from Scarlett let Brian know it wasn’t as stupid as he thought, “Yeah! I’m partial to my Aunt Mickie’s music, but my dad and the boys do good ones too! I…I’ll admit I’ve heard you and Mr. Garrison play at Spring Break! You’re good!” Spring Break was the festival that Air Raid Crash and The Varsity Blondes had played together and Brian wondered why he hadn’t met her until now. “Thanks, ma’am! I…uh…I don’t remember meeting you. Why?” “College,” Scarlett admitted. Brian reminded himself to give Griff props. It wasn’t often his friend was right. “I stayed in my pop’s trailer most of the night studying.” “College, huh? Recitations and all that?” Brian grinned, before making a reference to the movie he had mentioned before, “How doth the little crocodile improve his shining scale?” Why had he said that!? Of all the foolish things to say in front of a pretty girl?! But then again, there was that giggle. That giggle was bright and soft, letting Brian know that he was saying the right things to keep her attention. “Psychology major. I…I want to be a therapist, help people.” “Better ‘n what I’m doing,” Brian grinned, leaning back in his chair, “So…uh…you gonna be sticking around for the show?” “You know, Brian, I just might,” she charmed before her attention was drawn to the nearby stage, where Griff was watching the two intently. When noticed, Griff ducked his head nervously, “If you and your friend want, we could get some food? I know a place nearby?” To Brian, that seemed like a plan.

One of the things I like about AEW is that they’ve got so many guys in the mix and I usually know off the top of my head what any of them is up to.  Granted, some of these guys aren’t doing very much, but I at least have a sense of their character and storyline while they’re on the back burner.  I used to like that about WWE, years ago.  But somewhere around 2000 they lost the ability to focus on more than a handful of characters at any given time, which is a big problem when you have a hundred performers on your roster.

As a result, it feels more organic to me when guys like Eddie Kingston and Team Taz jump out of the undercard into the AEW title picture.  On Raw, these guys would be random nobodies in R-Truth skits until Vince McMahon suddenly decided to present them as killer threats to Drew McIntyre, and then they’d lose the title match and be nobodies again.  In AEW, there’s a better flow between “beating jobbers on Dark” and “beating name guys on Dynamite” and “punking out a champion to disrupt the rankings” and “recovering from a big loss by beating midcarders.”  That’s something I haven’t seen in US wrestling for so long, I forgot how much I missed it.

This has to be the deepest tag team division I’ve ever seen in pro wrestling.  I suppose maybe some group in Mexico might have more teams.  But 20 active teams is practically unheard of for a major-league US promotion.  Even New Japan could only find 10 teams for World Tag League, and half of them were one-off combinations.

One caveat is that the “Jericho and Hager focus on tag wrestling” thing may or may not be a long-term direction.  And Colten, Pillman, Garrison, and Serpentico are not (to my knowledge) under contract.  But that’s balanced out a bit by the tandems that haven’t competed in the last 30 days (Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall, Santana & Ortiz), and the potential for other alliances to be full-time dedicated tag teams (MJF & Wardlow, Team Taz).

The advantage of having this many teams is that you get booking in the tag division like you’d see in the singles divisions of most promotions.  You can actually have four or five teams on hot streaks, because there are plenty of lesser teams to put them over, so they don’t have to go 50-50 with each other.  You can actually have a group of teams acting as a midcard, that lose to the top guys but can beat anybody else.  And there are maybe six teams here that I’d call jobber teams, but they still win sometimes because they beat each other, or the freelancers on AEW Dark.  It’s a good ecosystem.

The AEW women’s division suffered a lot this spring from injuries and travel restrictions, but I’d say they’ve mostly recovered from those setbacks.  Most of the women listed above weren’t even in the company before March.  Collaborating with the NWA (Thunder Rosa) and pushing freelancers (Diamante, Ivelisse, Hirsch, Velvet, and King) has yielded a deeper roster than they had in 2019.

That being said, TV time is still an egregious problem for this division.  AEW is clearly wary about chasing viewers off to NXT if they run too many women’s segments on Dynamite.  If feels like they’re waiting for something that’ll make it the right time to actually push the division.  But the perfect moment will never come, so they might as well go with the hand they have.

It looks like the brewing Brandi Rhodes vs. Jade Cargill feud is going to expand to include (at least) Nyla, Swole, Deeb, Velvet, Diamante, and Ivelisse.  So if we see various matchups among those women for a few weeks (alongside Shida vs. Abadon and Baker vs. Rosa), then great!  If it just means one multi-woman tag on Dynamite, then it doesn’t really address the problem.

At some point CIMA and T-Hawk were quietly removed from the roster on AEW’s website.  With Shanna and PAC back in Jacksonville, that only leaves Sukara, Riho, and Sakazawi as the contracted performers out of action because of the pandemic.

Part-timers: Awesome Kong, Dallas Page, Dasha, Rebel, Sting

Kong has been out for nearly a year with no explanation besides a kayfabe injury.  My understanding was that she would be taking time off to film GLOW, but then the show was canceled, so I don’t know if she’s healing from real injuries or taking time off or what.  DDP is 64 and the last time I saw him on AEW programming he was mentoring QT Marshall from inside his house, so I’m pretty sure he won’t be back until after the pandemic.  Dasha and Rebel aren’t listed by AEW as wrestlers but they’ve each had matches this year.

Interestingly, Sting is listed on the official roster as a competitor with a 0-0 record in the promotion.  That seems like the surest sign yet that AEW plans to book him in a match.  He’s 61, but I suppose DDP wrestled this year at 63 years old.  He was forced into retirement with spinal stenosis, but I suppose Edge came back from that after a lot of rest and for a lot of money.

I have now finished watching “Season 2″ of 80′s Voltron.

The most interesting thing about this season is that since it’s based on a different series, the parallels between it and the new Voltron basically don’t exist. There is one thing that ties them together, and that’s the character Chip. Chip is Pidge’s twin brother, and he talks about him a few times, and there’s one episode where Chip gets a letter from Pidge and they cut in scenes from S1 while he dictates over it. Since I’m pretty sure they both have the same voice actor, that must have been fairly hilarious.

There are significantly more female characters in S2, which is extremely nice. While before we mostly got Allura and Romelle, both of whom are cool, but visually identical (and the show even notes this), this time we get Ginger, Lisa, and ... I can’t remember her name. I feel bad about that, because she’s actually quite competent and helpful. Now, the cast’s also expanded threefold, as this version of Voltron consists of three five-person teams, and there’s one girl on each team, but a number of the male characters get less attention than the female ones do. So that’s kind of neat.

We don’t get a whole lot of backstory for anyone, and I think Ginger gets the most with the revelation that she witnessed a capital ship being destroyed (which may have had her mother on it?) as a child and it gave her nightmares for weeks. She’s part of the Air Team, like Jeff (the main character, and basically Keith), and Chip/Pidge, and uh... two more people. Lisa is part of Sea Team, with Crick (an alien from a water planet like our third lady, and he and her appear to be the only two aliens), and our third lady is with Griff on the Land Team. Griff (Cliff?) looks like he escaped from a Gundam series with his charm intact. Jeff kind of flirts with both Ginger and Lisa, but there’s one episode where everyone is tired, and Ginger and Lisa are dozing on each other, so I’m fairly confident they’re dating.

So let’s talk about the plot: the Galaxy Alliance (with the military arm Galaxy Garrison) is a cooperative effort between multiple races and planets. Earth (and the other planets) are badly overpopulated so they’re looking for worlds outside our own galaxy to colonize. Galaxy Garrison is very strict about the process, specifically looking for totally unoccupied and unclaimed planets that have a similar disposition to Earth. Planets that are too young are marked but left behind so they can mature properly, and occupied planets are offered membership within the Galaxy Alliance. At the same time, the Drule Empire is seeking out planets too, often trying to swoop in and grab ones the Alliance has shown an interest in, several times destroying a planet if they can’t claim it for themselves.

And this is where we get to the interesting part: our villains. The initial commander is named Hazar, and he’s significant in his journey throughout the series. Initially, he’s as fierce as any Drule commander (their forces seem mostly to consist of robots the way Zarkon’s did in the previous season), but over time, he begins to realize that the war with the Galaxy Alliance is non-viable. Several times, he wants to make overtures to the Galaxy Alliance, and some of them are even genuine (the Drules fake-offering peace to the Alliance so they can set up a trap or ambush is one of those things that happens five or six times, if not more, and I started screaming ‘oh, fuck off’ at my screen’ after a while). Hazar is eventually demoted and exiled to a shit planet, and we learn more about why the Drule are doing what they do. Planet Drule is dying. We’re given three different-ish reasons for this and I kind of assume they’re all the same reason, just from different angles. Hazar mentions (though never to the Alliance, because the Alliance doesn’t know why the Drule do what they do, or even where their planet is until the end of the season) that the protective asteroid belt was stripped away and their planet is being bombarded by ultra-violet rays. They also mention a transient sun is damaging their planet, causing the surface buildings to crumble (they’re forced to live underground), and Hazar’s father mentions that scientific experimentation with solar energy caused severe issues. Either way, its days are literally numbered, and they’re obsessed with war.

Watching Hazar’s journey from just another warmonger to the champion of his people is fascinating. I can literally feel the frustration pouring off of him as he tries again and again to make peace with the Alliance and having his own officers fuck him over at every turn. Hazar isn’t alone in his beliefs, because in the later part of the season, he goes home to be courtmarshalled and we meet his sister, Darma, and his parents -- his father is actually on the war council, though he urges peace and understand and nearly gets shot for his troubles. They come close a couple of times before Hazar’s arrested and thrown into space jail to achieving peace, but the war council refuses to agree to terms (namely, disarming) because they believe the Alliance is there to take over their galaxy and any protestations anyway must be lies.

Hazar isn’t the only Drule we get to know either: early-middle season, a young fighter pilot crashes onto a planet and is rescued by the Alliance. He’s reticent at first, but overtures are made to be friendly to him and he isn’t treated like a prisoner. One of the members of Sea Team (I think), Shannon, is hostile towards him because his family was captured by the Drule and is still held on Planet Doom (important: Zarkon’s planet, not theirs) and he’s naturally upset. They do manage to get past it, though, and the pilot wants to return to Drule and help make peaceful overtures. In another episode, the Drule abandon a planet because they can’t hold it and blow up their own base, leaving a number of their own behind. These soldiers are again treated very well, and observe the Voltron teams playing something that’s sort of football, and ask to play. The Drule, coming back to be assholes, disrupt this but I do believe they survive. Finally, one of the other female Drule we see (three! three whole female Drule with names!) is captured and Hawkins attempts to convince her to become an ambassador of peace but she... pretty much has no interest in that. She steals a shuttle and escapes, which disappoints him but he doesn’t kill her or anything.

Speaking of Hawkins! He’s Commander Optimus Prime. He’s hugely interested in peace and is always the one who insists on following procedure even when it’s probably a trap. It’s amazing he doesn’t lose his faith in peace with the Drule despite how they treat him and, ultimately, his belief is justified, because they do achieve peace. So, spoilers on this last bit, Voltron force continues to win, despite some close calls (take ‘we can’t form Voltron because we’re missing 1 person’ and multiply it by about six because that’s what we get) and the Drule continue to lose, becoming increasingly more desperate. On Drule, the non-warrior caste people have a rebellion and seek Hazar to lead them against the war council, with Darma’s help. The Voltron team finally makes it there, past various false starts and help overthrow the government. They manage to very narrowly get all the civilians off the planet before it literally explodes, and they even found a planet for them to live on peacefully. The civilians have no desire to fight for more than their freedom, so this works out. Hazan even sheds happy tears.

So basically, Dairugger-Voltron is actually pretty good. Parts of it do get repetitive, but I feel like they’re a lot less deliberately cruel to the female characters. I thought Griff was going to have another terrible accent but it chilled into something better, and Crick’s accent isn’t as bad as Sven’s (nothing can be tbh). I joked a lot about Jeff-Keith and Lisa-Allura, but basically, they do do a good job with the characters. I’ve started S3 and we’re back to the original team, but it’s only 20 or 30 episodes instead of a full 52, and the season starts with Bandor being a huge loudmouth about how cute Sven and Romelle are.

Is MJF Ready for the AEW World Title?

Since its inception last year, AEW has been a company that relies on records on and statistics. It’s an analytical approach to wrestling that has made Tony Khan’s promotion stand out against WWE, whose booking often feels directionless and without any continuity.

But AEW finds itself falling into the same traps as WWE sometimes.

MJF is set to challenge Jon Moxley at the All Out pay-per-view next month. MJF is a future star, there’s no doubt, but AEW has done little to get him ready for a main-event push. Again, in a company where wins and losses matter, and where there are rankings and supposedly a strict system to who gets title shots and who doesn’t, MJF’s record just doesn’t seem worth of a world title match.

Sure, he hasn’t been pinned or submitted, but let’s look at who he’s faced.

Since March, MJF’s singles victories on AEW television include victories over Lee Johnson, Marko Stunt, Jungle Boy, Billy Gunn and Griff Garrison. That’s worthy of a top-five ranking and an AEW World Title match? 

Hardly.

MJF beat Cody at Revolution this past February and he beat Adam Page on an episode of Dynamite last November, but those two huge victories feel like ages ago.

WWE Raw Ratings Hit New Low Because Vince McMahon is Clueless

MJF may very well be ready for this spot. That’s not the argument. The point is that AEW should have done more on television to get MJF ready for this spot. All Out is one of AEW’s two big pay-per-views, and it might be their biggest on the calendar. MJF needed to get wins over some more prominent members of the roster in order to feel like he’s in a proper position as the No. 1 challenger to the AEW World Title.

Perhaps a more recent win over Adam Page, who is currently in a tag-team anyway. He could have beaten Cody again, if they worked a non-title match, or even Dustin Rhodes, Luchasaurus, Matt Hardy, Pentagon or Fenix. Anyone who has been positioned in a higher spot on the card, but AEW didn’t do that.

Squash matches over a couple of no-names and wins over Billy Gunn, Mark Stunt and Jungle Boy hardly feels like the road to a World Title match.

Hopefully this doesn’t become a trend for AEW, whose booking is supposed to be strict and disciplined. WWE will start and stop storylines without any reason or explanation, and AEW has begun to do similar things. Allie dropped the Bunny character and joined QT Marshall without any explanation. Brandi Rhodes has flipped between heel and babyface more times than Big Show, and now it feels like AEW is booking on the fly, shoving MJF into a World Title match without getting him there on television.
