Getting mad about a joke video is probably unhinged, but I am little drunk so whatever...this is literally the best the UK system has to offer people our age. This is what success looks like. And it looks so fucking dire man.
Just the sheer emptiness of it. A culture where this is the gold standard and people who live like this are the political base of the social order is one that will never produce any art, any science, or complete any historical tasks. You work a totally meaningless job, in a meaningless office, meeting meaningless sales targets and helping absolutely no one with the time you are given on this earth. It gives you access to as many commodities as you want, where you are encouraged and rewarded if you don't think about the slaves that picked, sowed, assembled and delivered the Disneyland around you, or the drained and polluted lakes, felled forests, and ruined mountains required to make it. It is a life where your relationships are as deep as a puddle. You have the wife you're supposed to have who might give you the sex you're supposed to have, who you barely take any interest in. Your friendships go as deep as football and video games. The art and culture you consume goes as deep as a TV quiz show. Not once does this way of life ever ask you to engage with the world in a way that gives that life any meaning. It just sounds so fucking boring. The other side of it as well is, at best, this is wealth without any real power. You live the life that capital and patriarchy have designed for you without any of the tools to interrogate whether that is the life you really want or what to do when those systems start to fail. The posh car and cookie cutter house ultimately belong to the bank. You must keep working your completely meaningless job to keep this life, which is fundamentally based on the same funny money. No community will come to your rescue and demand that your work continue when the bubble bursts. There is no social safety net, no public healthcare, no unemployment benefits, no concept of social responsibility. All of that has been fed to the financial system to keep the cheap money flowing. The only thing you really have in life is the ability to kick down, to bully your call centre underlings, to hate the people you're told to hate, coupled with the entitlement that comes from having "worked hard" and "followed the rules", unlike those scroungers, illegals, strikers, getting something for nothing and still asking for more. The people that are happy with this life, and are likely to go insane fascist when it is suddenly ripped away from them when the financial bubble bursts and the cheap mortgage money starts to evapourate, are the political force that needs to be smashed if life is to continue on this godforsaken island.

The mirror is not a mirror. Its a jewellery holder. I bought this mirror for £5 at a car boot sale when I was about 15 years old. It's served me well for the last 27 years. I've always used it more for jewellery, the curly bits lend themselves to that, and it means when they're not being worn they're still decorative to the room.
Tumblr media
There's far too much here for me to go through it all, though the vast majority is thrifted or I've had for decades and I forget where its from. However, shoutout to my friend for the rosary style necklace (here's a post I did about them in more detail which includes a link to her etsy shop). She also made the green lady and the heart with the eye in it at the top and the dragon eye. I think they were all done with air drying clay.
I also assembled a few myself (can't really say I properly "made" them), the ones you see on velvet ribbons, and I have a full post about how I did that here.
The message board is not a message board. Its a jewellery holder.
Tumblr media
Many of these were found or thrifted. The two sets at the top left are my Good Omens earrings that I put together with charms and beads, the onyx teardrops were my wedding earrings, the flies are by Katie Whittle, the Krampus ones were bought at a comic con but unfortunately I've forgotten the details of the seller (a shame because she had lots of other cool stuff).
The ravens I got from Etsy, but they're originally Ali Express. Be careful with etsy, there are a lot of sellers who claim their stock is handmade but are really re-selling items from Ali Express, Wish or Temu. Initially I found these for £19 ("on sale", regular price supposedly £30). All the seller had done was put an earring hook on them, which I really don't think qualifies them as handmade or warrants such a price hike. I did a search for "crow charm" and found them being sold elsewhere on etsy for £5. Then I did a reverse image search and found the original Ali Express listing where they can be bought for £2.37.
I did buy the £5 etsy ones for the convenience of having them shipped from the UK, but I would always advise checking more than one shop, or using Google lens/reverse image searching if you suspect an etsy item might not be legit.
You may notice, none of my earrings have hooks or posts on them. This is because my ears are stretched (the right has been 16mm for many years, and I'm currently stretching up the left to match, at present it's 5mm), so I can't wear conventional earrings.
You can get special plugs or tunnels that you can hang a hook earring from, but they usually make it very front-heavy which I don't like. I prefer the weight evenly distributed across my whole ear.
So, I simply remove the hook or post from any earrings I buy using jewellery pliers, and when I want to wear a set I hang them from a hinged segment ring (bottom left on my pin board, very cheap online), and put the ring through my tunnel. You just have to make sure there is a loop of some kind left at the top of the earring that you can put the segment ring through.
And if I want to wear them hanging from another of my lobe piercings I can do that too 😉. All my regular piercings are 1.2mm.

#3 Volvo EX30 — The China-made (but with a Swedish passport) crossover is starting to live up to the hype, jumping to the 3rd spot on the table in only its 3rd full month on the market. The model had 7,642 registrations in March. Note that its slightly bigger, but much older, sibling, the XC40 (recently renamed EX40), does not seem affected by this, with the Belgian-made SUV scoring its best result in 10 months (5,595 registrations in March). Expect the EX30’s sales to continue strong in the coming months, maybe even crossing the five-digit barrier (fingers crossed). Currently Volvo’s cheapest model(!), starting out at 39,000 euros vs. the 40,000 euros of the gasoline XC40, the EX30 is Volvo’s smallest model — the size of a VW ID.3. While it cannot be considered cheap (for that it would have to cost less than 35,000 euros), it can nevertheless be considered well priced, especially considering the premium standing it holds. Regarding the EX30’s March results, the distribution of deliveries show a push in three markets, with the UK (1,510 units), France (1,388 units), and the Netherlands (1,173 units) being the only ones above 1,000 deliveries, followed from afar by Sweden (652 units)(..)
P.S. The Volvo EX30 example well illustrates the mechanism of how American ICE vehicle manufacturers and the other companies that do not produce affordable electric cars will be kicked out of the European car market...! Tesla is too expensive and fails to offer a viable alternative to replace mass market ICE vehicles, but the Volvo EX30 is a completely different story: reasonable size perfect for Europe, acceptable range, good speed and quite reasonable price...! So, actually Tesla had lost affordable EV competition...

1 Cyril Power (1872-1951) UK The Eight  reduction lino cut print (1930) 32.3×23.4cm
2 photographer unknown
economist.com
IT HAS become the custom nowadays,” wrote Claude Flight, a British artist, in 1926, “to go to a shop for the tools of one's trade.” Flight was scornful of shoppers and liked to make things for himself. He kept his own bees and championed the art of the linocut, believing that the use of cheap materials would help democratise art and bring it to the attention of the masses. For his own linocuts he insisted on “a sharp penknife—such a very rare thing among art students” and a gouge he fashioned by fitting a small wooden handle onto a rib he cut from an umbrella.
Hard to imagine health and safety regulations allowing children today to have such fun. But Flight, who was a friend to Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, inspired many pupils at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, where he taught, wrote and organised exhibitions on linocuts.
Among the most famous was Cyril Power, an extraordinarily creative printmaker, born in 1872, who soaked up Flight's enthusiasms and gave them new force. Power drew on many influences—of the German Expressionists (who invented linocutting before the first world war), the Italian Futurists, the Vorticist prints and paintings of Wyndham Lewis—and the enthusiasm for speed and movement that marked the work of so many artists of the period, from Natalya Goncharova to Marcel Duchamp.
While the work of the Germans, Italians, French and Russians has become very well known, the prints and linocuts made by Power and his fellow British artists have lingered in the shadows. An inspired little exhibition—the first major show of Modernist British prints in America, which began earlier this year at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and is now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York—will help change that. So too will a newly opened show at a private gallery in London that gathers together for the first time prints of all 46 of Power's linocuts. Some are for sale; others have been lent by museums and private collectors, of which the most important are two New Yorkers, Leslie and Johanna Garfield.
The first impression of the Power show is that he lived his life in reverse. Until he was almost 50 he followed in the professional footsteps of both his father and his grandfather and practised as an architect, making a name for himself also as the author of an erudite study entitled “English Medieval Architecture”. Then, as Philip Vann explains in an elegant essay that accompanies the show, he “embarked on a kind of Gauguin-esque adventure”, leaving his wife and four children to enrol in art school in the company of a 24-year-old artist, Sybil Andrews.
The early prints in the show were made by a middle-aged man and it shows. In black-and-white there is a bridge at Rickmansworth, a street corner in the sleepy Suffolk town of Lavenham. Then suddenly the movement of the windmill in “Elmers Mill, Woolpit” gives an indication of what is to come. Starting in 1930, when he was already 58, Power takes to speed as if he had taken personal charge of the Futurist manifesto, which C.R.W. Nevinson co-signed with an incendiary Italian, Filippo Marinetti, in 1914, with the words “Forward! HURRAH for motors! HURRAH for speed!…HURRAH for lightning!”
Power allows light, noise and speed into everything he sees. Using a series of easily recognised colours, particularly “Chinese orange”, “chrome orange”, “viridian” and “Chinese blue”, he created images of merry-go-rounds, rowers, acrobats, dancers, runners, hockey players and, of course—given that some of his influences were Italian—beautiful cars.
The most successful are those, like “The Eight”, in which the element of formal design is most visible. But Power's vision as an artist really comes to the fore in works containing a hint of menace. The bourgeois-assaulting spirit of Italian Futurism, Mr Vann explains, had fallen into the malign hands of Mussolini and was about to give way to Fascism, while Freud's and Jung's obsessions with the unconscious were increasingly helping to throw up visions of fears, hopes and dreams.
“Monsignor St Thomas” (1931, pictured at left) is a brilliant working of the murder in the cathedral of Thomas à Beckett, but it is technically skilful rather than edgy. The really potent, and most modern-looking, of Power's linocuts are those that lead the viewer right to the edge. These start with “Tennis” (1933, below), a magnificent rendering not just of the energy of the centre court, but of the physical and psychological effects of slicing and spinning—sport at its most gladiatorial.
As the 1930s move towards totalitarianism and then war, Power's work takes on a darker hue. The tube trains and the escalators of the London subway system provide ample opportunity for exploring man's addiction to the rat race. Two further works seem remarkably prescient. In 1934 Power made a linocut which he called “Exam Room”, full of hunched-up concentration and a complex set of figures that show, in turn, fear, nerves, gloating, dreaming—and one who is slyly distracting a neighbour. Watching over them is the overbearing timekeeper and the all-seeing eyes in the ceiling.
Similarly, “Air Raid”, which Power made in 1935 and which has been lent to this show by the RAF Museum in Hendon, is an extraordinarily filmic response to a period of history the artist had not yet even seen. It would be another five years before the start of the Battle of Britain would make such imagery routine. Cyril Power was not just an artist, he was a visionary

okay I just got back from a trip to the US and I have thoughts:
why is the water level in the toilet bowl so high?? I accidentally dipped my hand in twice during my two weeks there and believe me it was twice too many!!
christ your groceries are expensive compared to here?? maybe it's because I exclusively go to aldi/lidl (which are cheap here) and I hadn't worked out what the equivalent in the states is but like, hannaford and trader joe's seemed a lot more expensive (based on my rough estimations of exchange rates and sales tax)
oh yeah the sales tax not being included on the price of the thing is strange to me also but I kinda knew that was a thing already
I occasionally see memes about like US public toilet cubicles being poorly constructed, with gaps, etc, and living in the UK I did kinda relate to them, but actually going over there I can confirm that the US gaps are bigger and the amount of panel you have is significantly less. like I can maybe squeeze my head under a uk toilet cubicle but I could fairly easily completely shimmy under a US one
okay this one is probably because of the state we were in and I'm sure it's not universal but like, the amount of pride flags I saw flying?? the amount of progressive pride flags?? the amount of "trans people are welcome here" signs and "we respect trans people" posters?? Active trans specific inclusion in *government buildings* right there for everyone to see, and not a single one (that I saw) defaced or torn down? in the uk you're lucky to get trans positive stickers on streetlamps (and even then a lot of them get defaced/torn off soon after going up) and specific LGBTQIA+ businesses might fly flags or put up posters, but in the US, even in the small towns we visited, a bunch of private houses and not specifically queer businesses had pride flags and posters up (again I'm sure this is different in other states but coming from the uk it was a breath of fresh air). oh and also we went to a farmers market in a tiny town and someone running one of the stalls was like "how's it going guys?" and then was immediately like "ah wait is it okay that I say guys? I don't want to misgender anyone" and like, that has never happened to me in the uk and I struggle to even imagine it happening outside of specifically queer settings
oven pizzas!! honestly the oven pizzas we had while there were better than 99% of UK pizzas (I'm including UK oven pizzas, restaurant pizzas, and takeout pizzas), idk what goes in them that's different to the uk but they were So Good
vanilla ben and jerrys??????? we get some B&J flavours in the uk but they're generally expensive compared to other ice cream and there might be 1-3 flavours to choose from in stores that stock it. we saw a whole freezer dedicated to B&J ice cream, in the entire aisle dedicated just to ice cream. anyway, I thought B&J only did fancy flavours so seeing the plain vanilla there was cool
also my lactose intolerance seemed to go on holiday during the trip?? like is american dairy just different? I had cheesecake and ice cream and incredibly cheesey pizzas and cheese toasties and had like 0 ill side effects. As soon as I got back to the uk I went "well I must be cured" and drank a yoghurt drink and Let Me Tell You That Was A Mistake
cars are B I G. we got off the plane and went to the car rental place and all the trucks and vans and stuff were just completely towering over me. It's like someone took a uk truck and expanded it to like 1.5x size. I felt kinda like I was a child again just with the height difference
gas stations!! we stopped off at gas stations and I was expecting like a lil selection of packaged sandwiches and bottled drinks but like, there were salads and sushi and wraps and sandwiches and then an entire hot food counter doing pizzas and hot wraps and there were pastries and several different types of filter coffee and teas and then An Entire Beer Cave?? (side note: alcoholic arizona ice tea?? holy shit??). apparently gas stations are some of the best places to buy booze, which I was not expecting?
I had a super great time while there and everyone was so friendly ^_^ but if someone could tell me why the toilet bowls are like that I'd appreciate it D:

honestly I’m not trying to insult my American followers when I say that it’s a crying shame that tumblr is so US-centric at times, because so many of you are missing out on comedy gold here right now. our own Car Boot Sale Donald Trump is being slowly but surely cannibalised by his own party and the woman who he replaced as PM turned up to vote him out in a full-on ballgown and glittery heels: not even Trump produced this much petty, vicious drama.

when people talk about writing ‘the next Lord of the Rings’ they think it’s all about the wars and the languages and the histories, and Aragorn brooding in the corner of an inn and the Balrog roaring in Moria and the ruins of Isengard, and that’s how we got Game of Thrones and several dozen cheap fantasy knock-offs every year, not to mention whatever nonsense the Amazon show is going to produce
but Tolkien’s wars and languages and histories stemmed from his love of creating - of words and history and mythos - and that love infuses into everything he writes, and if you miss that then there’s no way in hell you can replicate it
and the people who want to write the next Lord of the Rings because they want to write the next epic don’t get that the story is about the hobbits’ soft and simple lives and Bilbo’s poetry and Sam’s love language being food and Eowyn discovering hope after depression and Gandalf making fireworks for hobbits even if he is a literal angelic being, and Aragorn weeping over Boromir’s body and Theoden’s kindness to Merry, and Beregond betraying his most prized orders to save Faramir, and the unlikely friendship between Gandalf and Pippin, and the even unlikelier friendship between Legolas and Gimli, and Sam and Frodo singing to each other in Mordor, and Boromir sacrificing himself for the hobbits, and Sam’s simple love for Rosie, and the restoration of the Shire, and the friendship of the Fellowship surviving down through the ages, and peace after war and hope in darkness, and the love between a gardener and a gentleman pacifist being literally the only thing that saves Middle Earth
and that is why people who try to recreate Lord of the Rings by starting with war always get it wrong. you have to start with the love, or it’s nothing: just another empty history

also there’s no pithy, Tumblr-friendly way of simultaneously saying ‘Rishi Sunak being a man of colour doesn’t let him off the hook for the crappy Tory policies he’ll undoubtedly install’
and ‘the left needs to make sure that their criticism of Rishi Sunak does not veer into racism because directing racism at Tories does not make said racism acceptable’
and ‘Britain having its first British Asian PM is a big freaking deal and is going to be significant to Brits of colour across the political spectrum’
and 'the fact that Rishi Sunak has not been elected by the general public in such a time of political upheaval is just plain appalling, ‘mandate from the people’ my arse’
but that doesn’t mean it isn’t all true

Essential Motor Trade Insurance Quotes Facts
Tumblr media
Whether you're a seasoned dealer or just stepping into the world of automotive sales and service, understanding the intricacies of motor trade policy is crucial. In the UK, motor trade protection extends far beyond a mere contractual formality; it is the backbone of financial security for a spectrum of businesses, from bustling car showrooms to specialized MOT test centers. Navigating through the various offerings of automotive business insurance can be daunting, but it's a fundamental step to ensure your business wheels keep turning smoothly, irrespective of unexpected roadblocks.
Employing a robust UK motor trade protection plan is not just a mere recommendation—it's a requisite for operational longevity and legal compliance. The road to selecting the appropriate insurance policy for your trade entails comprehending potential risks, legal obligations, and the various facets of coverage available to your enterprise. This not only safeguards your business operations but also fortifies your stance against any potential disputes or financial loss that might arise in the fast-paced automotive industry.
Key Takeaways
Motor trade insurance is indispensable for UK-based businesses involved in vehicle sales, repairs, or servicing.
Properly structuring your motor trade policy is key to financial protection and risk management.
Understanding your legal obligations is essential to navigate the world of automotive business insurance effectively.
Differentiating coverage options allows for tailored insurance policies that suit the specific needs of your business.
Committing to a comprehensive motor trade protection strategy secures your business and offers peace of mind.
Understanding Motor Trade Insurance Coverage Types
Navigating the myriad types of motor trade insurance policies and finding a great cheap motor trade insurance quote can be daunting. From legal minimums to extensive coverage options, understanding these can significantly affect your business's financial and legal standing. Let's delve into the significant types of policies available for motor traders and identify which suits your business needs best.
Third-Party Only versus Comprehensive Insurance
Third-party coverage is fundamental for any motor trade business, providing protection against the costs incurred from damages to third parties involved in an accident. However, for broader protection, comprehensive motor trade policy includes damages to the trader’s own vehicles and those of customers. This wide-ranging coverage is essential in safeguarding your financial resources against unexpected incidents.
Additional Coverage: Liability and Combined Policies
Expanding beyond basic coverage, liability insurance is vital for motor traders. It encompasses public, product, and employer's liability, which protect against claims of injury or damage caused by your business operations. Further, combined motor trader coverage is optimal for those wanting to secure their premises and assets comprehensively, merging multiple forms of insurance under one umbrella for enhanced convenience and protection.
Identifying the Right Policy for Your Business
Choosing the suitable insurance policy requires assessing your business size, the trade types you engage in, and your specific risk exposure. It's not merely about fulfilling legal needs but also about protecting your business’s future and reputation efficiently and effectively.
youtube
Cheap Motor Trade Insurance Quote: Finding Affordable Options
Finding an affordable motor trader coverage is crucial for ensuring that your business is both legally compliant and financially protected without breaking the bank. Engaging in a thorough insurance comparison and understanding various premium calculation factors can lead to substantial trade insurance discounts.
Comparing Multiple Quotes for the Best Deal
Initiating an insurance comparison among different providers is the first step towards nabbing affordable motor trader coverage. Each insurer offers unique perks, coverage options, and pricing structures, which means a comprehensive comparison can aid you in landing the best deal tailored to your specific needs.
Discounts and Savings on Motor Trade Insurance
Experienced motor traders understand that maintaining a commendable business history and opting for higher voluntary excesses can unlock trade insurance discounts. Some insurers also offer seasonal promotions or discounts for implementing additional security measures at your business premises.
Understanding Insurance Premium Factors
Several key factors influence the determination of your insurance premiums. These include the level of coverage you choose, the geographical location of your operations, your past claims history, and the various security implementations at your business site. Understanding these premium calculation factors can aid in making informed choices that balance cost and coverage effectively.
Legal Requirements for Motor Traders in the UK
Adhering to UK motor trade laws is fundamental for every business engaged in the motor trade industry. The legislation mandates a compulsory trade coverage which primarily includes, at its most basic, a Third-Party Only insurance policy. This is not merely preferable but essential for legal operation within the sector.
Tumblr media
This minimum insurance requirement underpins broader efforts to ensure legal compliance, safeguarding both consumers and public interests by providing a baseline financial bark against the costs of potential accidents or damages induced during business operations. Neglecting these obligations can attract hefty consequences, ranging from punitive fines to an outright cessation of business activities.
"Failing to secure the compulsory trade coverage can lead to severe financial and operational repercussions, including substantial fines or the potential revocation of a trade license," highlights the importance of legal compliance within the motor trading sector.
Third-Party Only insurance is the legal minimum required to operate a motor trade business in the UK.
Enhanced policies are available and often recommended to provide greater coverage beyond the mandatory baseline.
Lack of adherence to these legal stipulations can lead to penalties including fines and possible license revocation.
Ensuring your business complies with these compulsory trade coverage laws is not merely about adhering to regulations but is a matter of protecting your business from potential risks associated with the motor trade. Stay informed and ensure your business meets all required legal compliance measures to continue operating within the law and for the safety of all parties involved.
Risk Assessment: Lowering Your Motor Trade Insurance Costs
Effective risk management in motor trade is vital for reducing overall insurance costs. Through meticulous planning and strategic implementation of safety protocols, motor trade businesses can significantly diminish the potential for accidents and claims, thereby leveraging lower insurance premiums.
Implementing Safety Measures and Training
To enhance vehicle safety measures, motor trade businesses should invest in comprehensive training programs for their staff. This includes educating employees on the latest safety protocols and handling procedures for various types of vehicles. Regular workshops and refresher courses ensure that safety practices are always top of mind, which in turn minimizes the risk of on-site accidents.
Maintaining a Claim-Free Record
Maintaining a pristine claims history is crucial for any motor trade business aiming to lower their insurance costs. Insurers often offer attractive no-claims discounts as incentives for claim-free periods, which can accrue to substantial savings annually. Businesses can achieve this by employing strict supervision and adhering to established safety guidelines rigorously.
Choosing Vehicles That Affect Insurance Rates
The selection of vehicles covered under a motor trade insurance policy exerts a significant influence on insurance premium rates. High-risk vehicles typically attract higher premiums, whereas opting for lower-risk or safer models can lead to insurance cost reductions. It's advisable for businesses to carefully consider the vehicle types that align best with economic insurance strategies while meeting their operational needs.
Policy Extras That Affect Motor Trade Insurance Quotes
When crafting a comprehensive motor trade policy, incorporating various insurance add-ons can provide a safety net tailored to specific business needs. These enhancements not only enhance the protection offered but also have impactful financial implications.
Tumblr media
Motor trade policy enhancements are vital for businesses seeking to mitigate risks that are not covered under a standard policy. For instance, specific add-ons like business interruption or goods in transit coverage address unique vulnerabilities that could otherwise result in significant financial distress.
Tailor-made trade coverage ensures that businesses receive a policy perfectly suited to their operational risks and financial capabilities.
From legal expenses to breakdown assistance, each add-on should be considered not just as an expense but as a strategic investment into the business’s resilience.
To truly safeguard your business, it's important that these insurance add-ons are integrated into your policy from the start. This will not only provide peace of mind but also a solid foundation from which your business can confidently operate and grow.
Making an Informed Choice on Your Motor Trade Insurance
Securing the ideal motor trade insurance policy selection is pivotal for the prosperity and legal standing of your automotive business. Making an informed insurance decision-making process entails a meticulous evaluation of the insurance products available, bearing in mind the unique requirements of your operation. It's about striking the right balance: finding a cost-effective solution without compromising on the scope of protection vital for your business's longevity and compliance with UK legal mandates.
Consultation with seasoned insurance brokers or financial advisors with expertise in motor trade insurance is invaluable; they offer business-specific insurance guidance tailored to your company's nuanced needs. These professionals can navigate the intricate web of insurance policies, compare nuanced details, and provide clarity on the pros and cons. Their insight ensures you're equipped not only with competitive premiums but also with comprehensive coverage that stands up to the intricacies of your trade.
Ultimately, the quest for the right motor trade insurance is more than just a box-checking exercise; it's an investment in your business's future. Informed and strategic policy selection can shield you from unpredictable setbacks, ensuring you remain steadfast on the path to success and compliance. Take the necessary steps today to safeguard your business tomorrow.

(Happy greetings!)
[TRANSLATION: George: Here they come! Here they come! Timmy: Woof, woof! Julian: Hello, Timmy! George: Hurry up, there’s a nice snack waiting for us!]
Tumblr media
(George is booooooored 😩😩😩😩😩😩)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: That first meeting was followed by many others. Bastien, with his southern gab and cheerfulness, won the children over. But after a week, George was showing signs of impatience. George: The Famous Five are all together and there's not a single mystery on the horizon! Julian: Come on, George, the holidays have barely begun!]
One day, Bastien receives a life-size wooden statue that he assumes was sent by his associate, Alain, despite there not being any message indicating its origin. The statue, which is the effigy of a Bolivian god, is hollow and amplifies the voice of anyone who slips inside it. The children have fun with it and call it Tocotoc*. [*Note: ‘Tocotoc’ is a play-on-words on different levels: it sounds like what children might imagine a pre-Colombian Central American name would be; it’s similar to the written form of the sound someone makes when knocking on wood (‘toc-toc’); and it’s similar sounding to the French phrasing “en toc”, which is used to describe an object that is fake and cheap.]
Despite its ‘wow’ factor, which brings in many customers to Bastien’s shop out of curiosity, the statue is bulky, not particularly valuable, and not very likely to find a buyer. And yet, a couple of days later, a Spanish man offers a large sum to Bastien for the statue. Bastien is a bit taken aback by this offer, and ultimately refuses because the statue is actually useful to him in bringing customers to the shop.
Tumblr media
(A strange offer)
[TRANSLATION: Bastien: All things considered, I’d rather not part with Tocotoc just yet. When I get back to Paris after the holidays, I’m sure I’ll find a buyer! Narrator: A few days later... Bastien: I’m not in the mood to be messed with today... George: What happened? Bastien: I had a visit from a stranger. He wanted Tocotoc. I told him it wasn't for sale. I thought the man was going to take it by force!]
A few days later, another man makes a huge offer for the statue, and Bastien refuses again. The Five feel that there is more to the statue than meets the eye. The two men, who are obviously in cahoots, finally find a ruse to get Bastien away from the shop, steal the statue and load it into a van. Fortunately for our protagonists, George had been left at the shop, and she manages to slip into the van undetected. When the thieves stop off at a café, George takes her chance and tries to drive the van away.
Tumblr media
(Thinky thoughts outside the café)
[TRANSLATION: George (thinking): What if I went into that café and publicly accused Luis and Antoine? George (second panel): No one would believe me and the two thieves would have plenty of time to get away!...]
But due to her poor driving abilities (she’s 11, and has only ever driven her parents’ car in and out of the garage), she soon loses control of the vehicle and crashes into a tree, fortunately at low speed. The various onlookers think that she has either stolen the van or run away from home and they call the police, who in turn call Bastien and George’s father who both clear up the situation. On the way home, Bastien asks the Kirrins to please keep the statue, fearing that the thieves might come back to the shop for it.
The thieves indeed do not get deterred and make another (failed) attempt to steal the statue at Kirrin Cottage. Intrigued by their persistence, the Five examine the statue more closely and discover that a solid gold disc adorned with precious stones was hidden inside its chest piece.
Tumblr media
(Seconds away from discovering the golden disc hidden in the statue)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: After George's parents have gone to bed, the Five head to the shed. George: Let’s take a closer look at Tocotoc. Anne: Why insist on stealing it? Dick: It's not even made of precious wood. Narrator: To get a better look at the statue, the children decide to lay it on the ground. Suddenly, Tim spots a mouse! … Julian: Look out! Tim!!!]
The thieves try their luck again and finally make away with the statue – not realising that the golden disc is no longer inside.
The Five would like to know where the statue originally came from, but Bastien threw the packaging away long ago. Our investigators are stumped until Bastien receives a new package containing five statuettes from Bolivia. A closer examination reveals that the statuettes are hollow and filled with precious stones. The children conclude that these antiques are used to smuggle gold and jewels from South America to Europe. The address on the box shows that the intended recipient was not Bastien in Kernach (which is the French equivalent to Kirrin village), but another antique shop in Fernach, a small village located 3 km (2 miles) away. Having thus found the thieves’ headquarters, the Five go on a reconnaissance mission to see whom they are facing. They do find the remains of the statue, which has been cut to pieces by the bandits searching for the golden disc. RIP Tocotoc. 😢
Meanwhile, Bastien receives a threatening letter demanding that he bring the golden disc and the five statuettes to a certain location on the beach that night, or else. Bastien agrees to the rendezvous and calls the police, hoping that the bandits will be arrested, but the policemen think that Bastien’s call is a hoax and they don’t come. Furious that Bastien did not bring the golden disc and the jewels, the bandits kidnap him and take him to a yacht anchored in the bay. The Five, who had been waiting nearby, approach the yacht in their own boat and are able to eavesdrop on the bandits. George puts together a plan and sends Julian and Dick swimming to Kirrin Island, instructing them to hide and wait inside the castle.
George then buys time by putting on an act for the bandits, eventually “confessing” to having found the disc and hidden it on the island. She lures two of the villains into the dungeons and, together with Julian and Dick, they lock the bandits inside.
Tumblr media
(A daring plan!)
[TRANSLATION: George: We discovered the dungeons at the bottom of this shaft. That's where we buried the golden disc. Thief: Go ahead! George: Mr Kopak should have come with us! Thief: Move along instead of talking!]
Julian, Dick and George then head for the yacht to capture the third bandit (Mr Kopak, the gang leader) and rescue Bastien, Anne and Timmy, but the yacht has disappeared!
On the yacht, Kopak had finally realised that he had been tricked and was planning to go to the shore with Bastien to recover the gold and jewels. As he angrily holds Bastien at gunpoint, Anne gets the jump on him with Timmy’s help and grabs the gun herself. The bandit is tied up. After reuniting with George and the boys, they all go to the police.
As a reward for recovering the stolen jewels, the La Paz museum in Bolivia sends the children a reproduction of Tocotoc, which they set in the garden at Kirrin Cottage.

Beautiful tips and steps to help you dress Goth
If you want to achieve the gothic fashion look, read this article to find out some beautiful tips and steps to do so – like carrying gothic bags!
Gothic bags and other items can take your fashion style to the next level. The fashion was born in the late 1800s and re-emerged in the UK from the post-punk scene in the 1980s. It shows no signs of going anywhere soon. A lot of people around the world indulge in this fashion because it is unique. It has been associated with a few signature traits. For anyone looking to get into this fashion style should start by learning the basics.
Important things you need to know
You should consider wearing a lot of black clothing such as pants, shirts, shoes and so on. If you are in doubt, you should consider all black. You can try a daring gothic hairstyle such as Mohawk. This will amp up your look. You can dye your hair neon for more flare. Make sure you keep in mind the right accessories. Layer on gothic jewelry like bracelets and chokers with pentagrams. You can try other cool symbols to top off your look.
Choose the right clothing
When it comes to gothic style, you should purchase a lot of basics and black pieces of clothing. The black color has been considered a staple of this fashion. You should work black into your wardrobe as the main color of your outfit. Buy a lot of plain pants, socks, tops and skirts during your shopping trip. You need to own the essentials of gothic fashion to start building outfits you like.
T-shirts are great when it comes to building your Goth wardrobe. They are very easy to find, cheap and come in numerous styles. If you want to achieve a feminine style, purchase an oversized t-shirt and pair it with fishnet stocks or high socks. It is acceptable to avoid wearing all black at all times. You can add a bit of variety to your outfit. This can be achieved by mixing other colors such as white, grey, red, blue violet or pink.
Choose black clothes in lace, velvet, silk, leather, or cheesecloth to achieve a classic Goth look. The Goth fashion is based on DIY and creativity. You should therefore try looking for clothing at your local second-hand shop, indie shops, flea markets and car boot sales.
Consider distressed clothing
Ripped tops and bottoms or distressed clothes are one of the most commonly worn dresses across every gothic culture. You should consider denim shorts or jeans with tears on the legs. Wear fishnets under your distressed bottoms to achieve an extra gothic look.
Consider graphic prints
You can consider occult patterns because they are a staple for gothic fashion. Always watch out for any graphic/patterned clothing featuring pentacles and pentagrams, stars, moons, crosses or skulls. You can consider a moon phase-printed casual dress that comes with long black socks.
Consider leather
If you can find gothic bags made with leather materials, you’ll be on the right track. Leather is a very popular choice when it comes to the Gothic style. It is versatile and can be worn in the form of bags, jackets, shorts, pants or skirts.
