The Structure of the DMBJ Xisha Archeological Team
Tumblr media
Members: Zhang Qiling, Chen Wenjin, Wu Sanxing, Xie Lianhuan, Huo Ling, Li Sidi, Qi Yu, and four unnamed others.
I. Introduction
The Xisha Archeological Team was an archeological team that explored Wang Zanghai's underwater tomb in Xisha around 1985. You may recognize them as the young group that explored the underwater tomb in flashbacks in The Lost Tomb 2.
This post is based on the novels only and includes MAJOR SPOILERS from Volume 8. Ultimate Note does not cover fully what happened with this team and Sanshu lied. This post does not cover the team's entire history since it is quite complicated and long.
PLEASE let me know if something is incorrect or confusing. The structure of this team is extremely complex so I could have easily misstated something. I replicated the information from the wiki here in the hopes that more people can catch inaccuracies.
If you check out the wiki, let me know which photo of the team you think is better to use on the page.
Last edit made to fix inaccuracies: none
II. History
A. Beginnings
Even though the Xisha archeology team explored the underwater tomb around 1985, the composition of the group dates back to the 1976 Banai expedition to the Zhang Family Tomb.
In 1976, some members of the Mystic Nine's second generation (Chen Wenjin, Huo Ling, etc.) went on an expedition to the Zhang Family Tomb in Banai. Besides Chen Wenjin and Huo Ling, it's not clear who all in the second generation of the Mystic Nine went. The team was organized by an unknown force, related to "It," to place a coffin in the tomb.
In 1978, the team found the place they were looking for and began their mission. While Chen Wenjin, Huo Ling, and some unspecified others were exploring underground, Pan Ma killed the members of the team up top. When Chen Wenjin and Huo Ling returned aboveground, they found that Xie Jiuye's people had replaced their former team.
The real Chen Wenjin and Huo Ling secretly managed to escape and flee Banai, but it's not explained how they got away. The people that replaced the team were wearing face masks in order to create the illusion that the original team never died.
B. Formal Creation
(this is about to get very confusing, I'm so sorry)
The archeological team had been formally created in the early 1980s under a research institute in Changsha. It consisted of the members who were replaced in Banai. By this time, they had also created a fake Huo Ling and a fake Chen Wenjin who joined the team. (we are not told who else had duplicates walking around beside Chen Wenjin and Huo Ling.)
i. The Real Chen Wenjin and Huo Ling Join the Team
When the archaeological team was gathering its equipment in Xisha, the real Huo Ling and Chen Wenjin forged secret orders to send their doubles to Changbai Mountain. The real ones then mixed themselves into the Xisha archaeological team.
ii. Wu Sanxing Joins the Team
Chen Wenjin sought ought (actual) Wu Sanxing to gain his help and he joined the team.
iii. Zhang Qiling Joins the Team
Zhang Qiling was trapped in the Golmud Sanatorium but was transferred out by Xie Jiuye's insider. Zhang Qiling then joined the team.
iv. Li Sidi and Qi Yu Join the Team
We don't know when exactly Li Sidi and Qi Yu join the team. There are several theories, but we have very limited information about the two around this time. For example, we don't know if Li Sidi was even at Banai or, if he was, whether he was replaced. We also don't know if Qi Yu was at Banai but even if he was, he likely wasn't replaced. Either way, two people named Li Sidi and Qi Yu joined the Xisha team.
v. Xie Lianhuan Joins the Team
Xie Lianhuan, who succeeded his father (Xie Jiuye), made contact with Qiu Dekao/Hendry Cox. Hendry Cox gave Xie Lianhuan information about the Xisha tomb.
Xie Lianhuan thought something was wrong with the team and was puzzled by Wu Sanxing's appearance. So he started making plans to join the team and wanted to replace Wu Sanxing with a double.
In true DMBJ fashion, it's not clear at what point and to what capacity Xie Lianhuan joined the team. Chen Wenjin and Zhang Qiling have stated that he was originally part of the team. But on the way to the tomb, Xie Lianhuan took a boat in advance and followed the archeological team at a distance with the man who was ready to replace Wu Sanxing.
Despite the lack of clarity, it is confirmed that he was part of the Xisha team.
vi. Final Composition of the Team
The team that explored the underwater Xisha tomb included Wu Sanxing, Huo Ling, Xie Lianhuan, Chen Wenjin, Qi Yu, Zhang Qiling, Li Sidi, and four unnamed others.
It is confirmed that in the group, Wu Sanxing is from the Mystic Nine's Wu Family, Huo Ling is from the Huo Family, and Xie Lianhuan is from the Xie Family.
Wu Xie suspects that Chen Wenjin is from the Chen family and that Qi Yu is from the Qi Family. Li Sidi (李四地) has the same last name as the Li Family, but Wu Xie never speculates that he's part of that family.

Speaking of looks, since Wu Xie is our narrator and he's not terribly hung up on people's appearance (unless it's somehow important) we don't get a very through picture of anyone's physical traits. Here's what I know so far (that is halfway through the Heavenly Palace adventure):
Pangzi is fat but agile and very strong.
Da-Kui was 'big'.
Xiaoge has two unusually long fingers, his body is 'soft like that of a woman', he's taller than Chen Wenjin but shorter than a rearing centipede-monster.
Chen Wenjin had long hair and wore it in a braid.
A-Ning has short-ish hair but it's long enough to cover her neck.
Chen Pi Ah Si has a scar across his eyes and he looks to be around 70 (which is noteworthy because he's over 90).
Monk Hua wears glasses.

(post UN Iron Triangle OT3)
"You can leave if you want to." Wu Xie stared into Xiaoge's eyes, trying to read his expression. They were so close that every time Xiaoge inhaled, their chests touched, yet Xiaoge didn't look like he wanted to be there - didn't look like he wanted to be with Wu Xie.
But he didn't look like he wanted to leave, either.
"Oi, Tianzhen," snapped Pangzi, coming up behind Xiaoge and wrapping his arms around Xiaoge's shoulders. "You think he'd be standing 5 cm from you if he wanted to leave? Just kiss already."
Grimacing, Wu Xie broke eye contact, but kept his hands on Xiaoge's hips. It'd been so long since they'd shared any intimacy. He missed Xiaoge so much it made him sick, so much that the guilt roiled him whenever he was alone with Pangzi, because shouldn't Pangzi be enough? But Pangzi alone wasn't enough, and Wu Xie knew that he alone wasn't enough for Pangzi, either. They were only complete as a threesome, would never have been together at all if not for Xiaoge.
But also he knew, without knowing a single detail, that too many people had forced Xiaoge to do too many things he didn't wish to over too many years. He'd never let himself become another person who used Zhang Qiling.
"You think he'd let me do this if he wanted to leave?" Pangzi grumbled; Wu Xie looked up to see Pangzi slathering open-mouthed kisses on Xiaoge's neck.
"I don't know..." Wu Xie murmured. "I don't know what to think." All he knew was that Xiaoge had come into the room and stopped before the bed, had leaned in when Wu Xie had touched him but not reached out in return, had invited everything but reciprocated nothing.
His gaze returned to Xiaoge, starting down where their hips were slotted together - and he could feel Xiaoge's interest, that much was undeniable! - and trailed up the black T-shirt like a thin second skin over his chest, to his neck where Pangzi's attentions were starting to leave red marks, to his lips that Wu Xie longed to kiss, to his deep, black eyes in which Wu Xie could lose himself forever, more thoroughly than ever he could get lost in a tomb. They were wide, beautiful, lost; light glimmered in the moisture gathered along their lower rims.
"I don't think he knows, either," added Wu Xie. The cues were small, subtle, but finally Wu Xie thought he understood. "You've forgotten, haven't you?" Xiaoge's lips quirked down in the slightest of responses. "You've forgotten here" - Wu Xie raised a hand, ran the fingers softly over Xiaoge's forehead, brushed errant strands of hair aside, felt the shiver, or maybe tremble, buzzing just beneath Xiaoge's skin - "but you remember here..." Wu Xie skimmed his fingers along the stark line of Xiaoge's cheek, down his perfect neck, along is clavicle, then dipped to settle, flat-palmed, on Xiaoge's chest.
Thu-thump resounded up his arm, thu-thump, thu-thump, thu-thump, so vibrant and alive and present.
Xiaoge gave the faintest nod.
No matter what happened happened now or in the future, Wu Xie was still in Xiaoge's heart. The problem was that in Xiaoge's head, he couldn't remember Wu Xie and Wang Pangzi beyond the events that had occurred after his last encounter with Chen Wenjin.
"Do you want us to stop?" Oh, Qiling, I hope you don't want to stop...I can only imagine how confusing, how scary, how different, this is for you...but stay with us, please...
Xiaoge gave the faintest shake of his head.
"Then let us help you remember," whispered Wu Xie, closing the distance between them to bring his lips to rest against Xiaoge's. They were as soft as Wu Xie remembered, as hot as he had craved, as perfect as he had longed for. Heat throbbed outward, billowing through Wu Xie's chest, pulsing in time the heartbeat hastening under the hand he yet had pressed to Xiaoge's chest.
And oh, did Xiaoge reciprocate, finally, with urgency, passion, desire, and - dare Wu Xie hope? - love.
"Finally," exclaimed Pangzi. "I swear you two. Why did this take so long? All you had to do was..."
Pangzi was still talking, but Wu Xie didn't care, couldn't listen.
Finally, Xiaoge was back.

Since we had fun with the last one and didn't start too many blood feuds with it, I'm bringing it back!
This round's a little different: Slots are for your favorite portrayal of your favorite character with that family name. Again, not best at acting, most book-appropriate, most morally correct, sexiest, whateve -- and it still neither means that all other versions are bad nor means other people are bad for liking them. Just your favorite.
...This is going to be the thing that tells you real quick whether or not someone is familiar with the Mystic Nine and/or Sand Sea, isn't it?
Anyway, I'll go first! WIth explanations behind the cut.
Tumblr media
Zhang Rishan: I love Xiao Ge, I want to shove him down the front of my shirt like the little black cat he is, but ... if I have to pick a Zhang, it's going to be that chipmunk-cheeked gremlin angel turned cranky bitch who texts like a grandpa.
Er Yue Hong: There's just not a lot of Hongs in the visual media, so this is probably going to come down for most people to, did you like better the one in the movie or the one in the drama? For me, I'm going to be like 90% of the ladies in the show and go for the cross-dressing wife guy.
Chen Wenjin: Auntie Wenjin wins this, partly because she's pretty baller in Ultimate Note, but also because the other Chens kinda suck. Big shoutout to Chen Pi Ah Si for being so fun to hate, though.
Wu Xie: The most babygirl, the one in my heart.
Huo Xiuxiu: This one surprised me by being the hardest decision on this grid! There's just so dang many Huos, and so many of them are absolute gems. Ultimate Note's jiejie-coded gymnast edges them all out, though, and wins her place in this spot by a nose.
Xie Yuchen: I did wind up curiously fond of his drug addict grandpappy with a stolen puppy and a huge abacus, but I didn't write an unnecessarily long and pornographic hurt/comfort fic for that executive homosexual; I did it for Xiao Hua.
Wang Pangzi. Practically perfect in every way.
Qi Tiezui: I wanted so badly to put a Qi space on this layout, but there's only one, played by only one person, so it's not much of a choice, and a completely unmakeable one if you're not familiar with the Mystic Nine series (unless you think Glasses counts, and that's debatable, since we don't really know what his name is). So I'm going to take my free space opportunity and give it to Ba Ye, the needy, batty religious studies major I way overidentify with. I want to kiss his fooby little face.

Every lady in DMBJ Live Action Cinematics is questioning their life choice.
Chen Wenjin: I'm 😶
Yin XinYue: At least some of us got an answer 😌
Liang Wan: *nod enthusiastically* ☺️
Bai Haotian: Even though the answer is NO 🥺
Ah Ning: Some of us just ain't so lucky to get that far 😔
Su Nan: What do you mean by that?! Getting a NO for an answer or getting any answer at all?! 😐
Yun Cai: I know right. I didn't get the chance to know the answer. 😞
Ye PiaoPiao: I didn't even get the chance to ask 🙁

Finished book 6 of the English translation of DMBJ last night, and I think that might have been my favorite volume so far. I think it was @lacommunarde who described these books as slow burn friendship (found family?) and YES. By book six you're really starting to see those feelings gel together and they're almost recognizable as the Iron Triangle we all know and love.
Also holy FUCKING PLOT TWISTS, BATMAN.
I have a LOT of feelings about what went down in that book and about how losing Wen-Jin broke Xiao-ge and how (even temporarily) losing Xiao-ge broke Wu Xie, but I don't have the energy to discuss it just yet, so I'm going to just leave you with this section from MUCH earlier in the book when I sat up and went oh SHIT Wu Xie. That is... A Lot of raw emotion there for someone you barely consider a friend... ISN'T IT? 👀😏👀😏👀

DMBJ Explore with the Note Ep 5
Okay, now that my workshop is finished, time for DMBJ Explore with the Note ep 5! Otherwise I will spend the entire afternoon just fucking around in WoW instead (one day I will show you screenshots of my Iron Triangle-as-WoW-toons).
We start ep 5 with the usual counts
Season 2 Xiaoge Rescue Count: 2 for Wu Xie, 2 for protagonists, 3 for everyone
Season 2 Wu Xie Swoon Count: 0
Season 2 Evil Hair Count: 3
Cumulative Xiaoge Rescue Count: 12 for Wu Xie, 17 for protagonists, 18 for everyone
Cumulative Wu Xie Swoon Count: 6
- It's been a few eps since we had updates to the rescue or swoon counts, so here's hoping for Ep 5
- Ah, yes, the baby archaeologists just discovered the heavenly palace
- At least this girl is marginally less annoying than she was in the novel
- ...okay, I take it back
- Sweetie, it's a fucking tomb, why are you upset that there's a corpse in there?
- Those are some impressive fingernails
- lol, and they were all so distracted by the girl that no-one noticed 'Xiao Zhang' going all Zhang Qiling to get up there to check out what freaked her out
- I am disappoint that they didn't keep the present time crew in form-fitting wetsuits for the whole underwater tomb investigation like they did with the flashback crew
- OMG the look on Wenjin's face, I love it
- I think she's starting to realise that he knows what he's doing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Very good questions, Wenjin
- Oh, so that wasn't just better set lighting, the tomb was actually fully lit somehow? The better question in this case is not 'why is it suddenly so dark' but 'how the fuck was this underwater tomb so well lit?'
- THEN you can follow it up with 'why has the mysterious lighting suddenly gone out?'
- WHY would you bring such a group of easily scared kids on an archaeological expedition to EXPLORE THROUGH TOMBS?
- That seems like a bad idea even if you didn't think anything weird would go on
- ISTG, Sanxing, Wenjin, and Xiaoge are the only level-headed ones of the bunch
- A mural. They were in hysterics over a mural.
- I mean, yeah, there's a lot of high mountains, so not surprising you can't tell which one it is
- I was gonna say she's super judgey for an archaeologist but...nah, yeah, that tracks for academia, speaking from experience XD
 - This episode has been taunting me with potential rescues that never quite get there, so it better actually pay off with one of them this episode
- Oooh, bitty shadow
- Wonder if it's the baby corpse from the jar earlier
- ...oh, right, Sanshu's still running around in some weird trance
- Awww, the lights go out in the heavenly palace room, and the entire set lighting goes from lovely and well-lit so you can actually see what's on screen, to super dark and shadowy, even outside that room
- Sorry, sanmei, I know I said I’d stop talking about lighting, but...I live in eternal hope of good lighting. The flashbacks here were actually GOOD up until now. So I am sad they've gone back to bad lighting.
- I'm embarrassed to say that it's taken me the entirety of Guardian, Granting You A Dreamlike Life, DMBJ 1, and now partway through ep 2 of DMBJ 2 before I've realised that I can pause Viki playbacks by hitting my space bar.
- OMFG, how many rooms are there in this tomb with a set of porcelain vases arranged in a particular order?
- Smart, Wenjin, conserving flashlight batteries like that.
- I know that this Wenjin must be older than the Wenjin in the Chongqi flashbacks, but why couldn't we have had this Wenjin in those flashbacks as well?
- Chongqi Wenjin is ok, but this one's more level-headed and competent. And much better at de-escalating semi-hysterical girls.
- Then again, I suppose if Chongqi Wenjin had this Wenjin's skills, they wouldn't have been able to have had that dumb ~DRAAMAA~ with the love triangle
- Tunnel floor is suddenly wet again instead of dry. Wish they'd make up their mind
 - Evil Hair Count: 4
- This time creeping on random guy at the back of the party
- Who is mildly disturbed that he's suddenly got water down the back of his neck. Don't blame him
- Judging by the way Xiaoge just clapped a hand over his mouth and nose, I'm guessing that they all just got gassed.
- And it must be a REALLY FAST acting gas if they all collapsed like 5 seconds after Xiaoge covered his nose and mouth, and he seems to be fine
- Oh, no, spoke to soon, down he goes
- Okay, Sanshu. A) That's creepy, and b) why aren't you also affected?
- ...something that takes down Xiaoge for long enough that he wakes up in a hospital bed concerns me
- I do not blame him one bit for looking so perturbed
Tumblr media
- OMG, that GRRM roast, that's fantastic
- I hope Xiaoge is just leaving out all of the unnecessary family stuff that he doesn't think Wu Xie and Pangzi need to do, otherwise he just implied that the Zhangs have just, like, misplaced him for 20 or so years and not looked for him?
- Wu Xie is always so desperate to believe the best of Sanshu, it's really cute
- Ah, I see we're back to the requisite pingxie staring for the episode. Excellent
- Here's the clearest sign yet that S2 does not follow on from S1 at all, as it completely ignores changes that S1 made to the plot and instead is referencing novel events that did not happen in the drama.
- I would have been SO FUCKING CONFUSED if I hadn't read the first novel
- lol, Xiaoge. Giving a tiny almost-smile and clapping someone on the shoulder after dropping a bombshell like that on them is NOT how you're supposed to talk to your crush
Tumblr media
- And it looks like we're now back to Wu Xie's nightmares from the first ep
- ...is that last one supposed to be Xiaoge? It's hard to tell with the angle and (yes, sorry, sanmei) the lighting
- Way to ruin the moment, Pangzi
- ...omg Pangzi
- I'm kinda cringing now
-  Hahah, the look on Wu Xie's face. Like, same
- Those are good points, Pangzi, but wouldn't you still have the problem of being underwater without oxygen tanks? That tomb is pretty far down and mostly buried in the sea bed, after all
- ...Wu Xie that maths made no sense at all
- Rude. Pangzi has said useful things before now!
- LOL at all the "don't touch anything" "i mean it" "also" "DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING"
- Because we all know that Pangzi is gonna touch stuff and try to steal at least one thing
- Oh, there you are, A-Ning
- How did you get in there?
- This is an unnecessarily long sequence of Xiaoge running his fingers over the door and Pangzi messing with his hair, set to super annoying BGM. Was it really necessary to have a full 1 minute 40 seconds of that?
- That should have been done in, like, 30 seconds tops.
- I do like how excited this Wu Xie is to see the cool architectural stuff like the moving doors in here
- After that first hallway, they all seem so unconcerned about traps
- Tombs are usually, quiet, Wu Xie. Hence the saying 'quiet as the tomb'
- Xiaoge's tiny smiles at Wu Xie and Pangzi's banter are just adorable
Tumblr media
- OMG THEIR FACES
Tumblr media
- But guys, you really should have looked for traps first
- Before the walls started trying to squish you like pancakes
- "Start climbing", says Xiaoge, as he just fucking leaps up the sides of the walls
- Good thing these walls are conveniently not smooth and straight, with regular hand and footholds
- Xiaoge Rescue Count: 3 for protagonists
Tumblr media
- Not quite the dramatic rescue I was hoping for, but I'll take it since it's been so long
- The closed walls has now made them a cute little tunnel to crawl through
- Oh, wait, annoying girl was from one of the Nine Gate families?
- Which one? I'll have to look her up later, I've completely forgotten her name.
- Xie Lianhuan is talking Sanshu into taking him along on the original expedition. Honestly, dude, you dying is all your fault, you weren't even supposed to be there
- Oh, Qiu Dekao was involved in the 20 year ago bullshit as well. Why am I not surprised?
- And with the tomb from S1, too, also 20 years ago
- Wait, if Wenjin was the leader the whole time, how come she kept deferring to Sanshu?
- Dramatic bgm! Dramatic reused footage!
- Oh yeah, the looks on their faces, I know exactly who just popped into mind for Pangzi and Wu Xie at that
- Because who else could have done it?
- ...okay, except Sanshu, point
- Oh noooooo, more fucking underwater diving scenes
- This show is instilling in me a visceral loathing of underwater diving scenes. They're awful
- Like, seriously, after 5 eps they've already shown enough underwater goddamn diving scenes to fill up a full half of an episode
- An entire quarter of one episode was made up of them
- Oh my GOD that bgm. That was...something
- Okay, Xie Lianhuan was supposed to have dug this passage? Seriously?
- He was only missing for a day before they found his body, how the fuck was he supposed to dig a loooooong passage, high enough for a fully grown adult to walk crouched, in less than a day?
- Ah, and that's ep 5.
 Count updates:
Season 2 Xiaoge Rescue Count: 2 for Wu Xie, 3 for protagonists, 4 for everyone
Season 2 Wu Xie Swoon Count: 0
Season 2 Evil Hair Count: 4
Cumulative Xiaoge Rescue Count: 12 for Wu Xie, 18 for protagonists, 19 for everyone
Cumulative Wu Xie Swoon Count: 6
Season 2 is decidedly lacking in swoons so far. It better up its game.

The oldest eugaleaspiform fishes from the Silurian red beds in Jiangxi, South China and their stratigraphic significance
Xianren Shan, Zhikun Gai,  Xianghong Lin, Yang Chen, Min Zhu, Wenjin Zhao
Abstract
Two new species of Eugaleaspiformes, Qingshuiaspis junqingi gen. et sp. nov. and Anjiaspis ericius sp. nov., were described from the lower Telychian Qingshui Formation in Wuning, Jiangxi Province.
Our phylogenetic analysis reveals that Qingshuiaspis clusters with Shuyu, Meishanaspis, and Jiangxialepis to form the clade Shuyuidae, which is the sister to all other Eugaleaspiformes. These represent the oldest and most primitive fossil occurrences of Eugaleaspiformes in the marine Lower Red Beds of Silurian in South China.
The new fossil evidence indicates that the vertebrate assemblages consisting of Shuyu, Meishanaspis, and Anjiaspis from the Silurian marine red beds in northwestern Zhejiang are more comparable to that of the Qingshui Formation (Lower Red Beds) than that of the Xikeng Formation (Upper Red Beds) in Jiangxi Province.
The fish-bearing marine red beds in northwestern Zhejiang probably belong to the Tangchiawu Formation rather than the Maoshan Formation, and its age should be modified as early Telychian, about 438 million years ago. The oldest eugaleaspiforms and polybranchiaspiforms from the marine Lower Red Beds of Silurian in South China demonstrate that the two major groups of galeaspids split no later than the early Telychian.
