Il programma si apre giovedì 1 febbraio alle 21 con un nuovo concerto di Arts & Jam, rassegna di jazz e contaminazioni giunta alla dodicesima edizione e curata come sempre da associazione Muse e JazzOff Produzioni. Sul palco la cantante Lara Luppi presenta "Perspectives", accompagnata da Paolo Birro (pianoforte), Aldo Zunino (contrabbasso) e Adam Pache (batteria). Quindicesimo album della sua carriera, "Perspectives" raccoglie brani cari da sempre alla cantante modenese (D. Ellington, J.Van Heusen, R. Rodgers, C. Porter, I. Berlin) con qualche novità come il brano di Cedar Walton "When love is new", con testo originale, o la meravigliosa ballad scritta da Charles Mingus "Duke Ellington's sound of love". Doppio appuntamento con la lettura e la poesia venerdì 2 febbraio: si inizia alle 18 con l'incontro con lo scrittore Gianfranco Mammi che presenta il suo romanzo "Pluriball" intervistato da Federica Scaltriti: un romanzo giallo dai toni tutt'altro che gialli: ironico, iperbolico, mai scontato. L'apocalittica celebrazione del potere della scrittura.. L'appuntamento è a ingresso libero e fa parte della rassegna "Dialogo con l'autore" a cura dell'associazione culturale l'Asino che vola. Alle 21, spazio alla poesia performativa con la finale della nuova edizione del torneo di poetry slam a cura di Mutuo Soccorso Poetico. Braves Pitching

Atlanta’s pitching situation hasn’t exactly been great:

As a team they have a 92 ERA+, and while they’re getting a lot of strikeouts (10.7 K/9) they’re also walking a lot of guys (3.7 BB/9) and giving up a lot of homers (1.5 HR/9). Having their best pitcher in Fried being a disaster before getting injured doesn’t help, and their bullpen has had some injuries to the back half of it, but their rotation should be better.

Starting Game One is the old Yankee nemesis Charlie Morton—someone who’s famous for being a mediocre pitcher before being told to “just throw harder” in Houston and becoming really good out of nowhere in his mid 30’s.

Unfortunately for the Bombers, in Morton’s career he’s had 10 pretty good starts vs NY: he’s 4-2 with a 3.83 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, 2.92 K/BB ratio, and just seven homers allowed in 51.2 innings. That said, he has been considerably worse in Yankee Stadium: those numbers go to 1-2 with a 5.64 ERA, 1.418 WHIP, 2.50 K/BB ratio, and 6 homers in 30.1 innings.

Morton has a true four pitch mix: a curveball he throws 29% of the time, a sinker he throws 29% of the time, a four seam fastball he throws 26% of the time, and a cutter he throws 16% of the time. It’s still early, but his pitch mix this season is really interesting:

Part of his success in Houston was ditching the sinker to launch four seamers more (and also magically throwing 5mph faster and drastically improving his spin rate) but in Atlanta so far he’s brought his sinker and cutter back into the fold more. Morton is getting BABIP’d a bit on his fastballs- actual average of .294 vs xBA of .198 against the fastball, but people are hitting the four seam, sinker, and cutter a lot harder. Morton’s stuff moves more horizontally vs vertically, but if the Yankees can lay off the curveball (99th percentile spin rate, and elite vertical and horizontal movement) and punish the fastball, they might be able to warm their bats off a familiar face.

Starting the second game of the series is Ian Anderson, who you might remember flirted with a no hitter in his first career start last year when we visited Atlanta. This year for Anderson has been a little different compared to his elite 2020 season:

Anderson’s stuff doesn’t have any dance to it—he throws a 12-6 curveball but it drops 3.3 inches less than the average curveball, and he throws a 94mph fastball that is really flat with no spin to it. Right now opposing hitters have a .517 xwOBA on balls put in plate, which is Nick Nelson levels of bad. He throws three pitches: the four seam fastball to both righties and lefties, a changeup exclusively to lefties that gets grounders, and a curveball to righties that doesn’t really do much. He’s also only going 5 innings a start because of his pitch count, and lefties currently have a 1.112 OPS against him . This should hopefully be a good couple pairs of starters to get back in a rhythm against fastballs, both throw some pretty flat fastballs without a lot of other pitches to worry about.

Braves Lineup

If Acuna plays this week, the Yankees might be in some serious trouble—he has a 253 OPS+ and is slashing .419/.486/.887 with seven homers and six doubles this season. If Acuna isn’t playing, all of a sudden the Braves lineup is a lot weaker. They can play Ozuna at DH this week which will improve their defense, but they don’t have a lot behind him to play in LF and you might see Pablo Sandoval at DH instead because of that:

Freeman is putting up another really nice season in the middle of the lineup:

He continues to increase his walk rate and lower his strikeout rate, all the while absolutely crushing fastballs, so if you don’t make your pitches and get behind, he’s ready to hammer your attempts to get back into the count.

Freeman also does an excellent job of spreading the ball around the field, which makes it harder to eliminate his offense by putting a shift on him.

Yankees Focus On: Darren O’Day

O’Day has been doing great in his first month in Pinstripes:

When you have a 85mph fastball and a high 70’s slider, it’s hard to be effective as a reliever, but O’Day is making it work—he’s throwing just those two pitches and hitting his spots perfectly:

Slider is all low and away in the zone, fastball is all up and in, and with his release the fastball gets more movement and is harder to pick up than it should be. He’s getting ahead in the count early with a 66% first pitch strike rate, and is continuing to pound the zone over and over again without putting anything in meatball territory (only 4% of his pitches have been meatballs).

The most important part of O’Day so far is that he’s been able to get out lefties as well:

Obviously he’s better against righties in his career and that’s what he was brought in to do, but having the ability to get lefties out is just so helpful. Compare his splits with Adam Ottavino, who he was brought in to replace for a third of the cost:

Pretty big difference there, and the reason one is a trusted member of our bullpen and the other is blowing games for the Red Sox right now.
