side note : I made another version with the original French dialogue between Buck and Braise, feel free to ask if you want to see it.
word count : 2,7k

As Sebastien enters the diner, he’s immediately greeted by the waitress with a wide smile. As he responds with his usual charming smile, they exchange formalities before she directs him to a table.
“How many?”
“Two,” he answers holding up two fingers before his gaze diverges towards the window to his left.
Buck squints towards the window, like he’s searching for something, someone.
He had found himself in Montreal these past few days, in contact with an operator. Sent by Harry, he would use his charisma and his smile to convince this said operator to join Rainbow.
Nothing he couldn’t handle. He was a very confident man, and had reasons to be. Just by the way the waitress glanced at him, you knew Sebastien “Buck” Côté was no stranger to seduction.
Before he has time to think about how he’ll handle this whole recruitment thing, the waitress walks up to him, holding a small notebook and asking the usual questions.
Sebastien takes his phone out, already impatient. She was late. As usual. With a smile he’d look at the waitress and then at the menu, waiting for the person on the other side of the call to answer.
She finally answers.
“Hello, mama.”
He lets out a small smirk as he hears her voice, “I’m ordering you pain doré.”
“No, thank you.”
“Our very patient waitress, Maggie, I think-” he says, looking at the woman’s shirt. “-according to her name tag, asked me four times to take our order. If I don’t order now, it’s just rude.” Finishes Sebastien, a bit irritated.
“I can come back." Gently offers the waitress.
He turns to the waitress, answering softly with a smile. “No, it’s okay.” He stares back at the door of the dinner in front of him before finally making a decision. “You know what, I’ll decide for you. She’ll have pancakes.”
“Oh, no. No pancakes. I don’t like pancakes. No pancakes.”
“What? You’re a communist or something? She’ll have the pancakes and a fried egg. I’m thinking hash, but only if it’s like chunky style, okay?” He explains looking into the waitress’ eyes while moving his free hand to mimic the chunky style.
“Listen, if you order me hash and pancakes, i’ll kick your behind.”
He still has a smirk glued to his lips. “You have to eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
Buck doesn’t have time to finish his sentence when Braise enters the dinner and immediately looks at him. Then she looks at the waitress with a smile, approaching the table and hanging up the phone.
“Uh… Ma’am, ignore everything he said, okay? Don’t bring me any eggs or pancakes. Just bring me some water. And bring him a couple eggs, please.”
Luna sits down at the table, frowning at Sebastien for not ordering what she wanted.
They were always like that. They had been teasing each other since they met on that joint operation between the Joint Task Force 2 and the Emergency Response Team, one year ago. Buck found Braise to be the perfect candidate to join team Rainbow. Thanks to Harry, she now had a place.
“No. I don’t want eggs. I want hash. Put a couple eggs on it, please. And give her some rye toast, too.”
“No rye toast for me. I don’t like rye toast.”
“And a pancake.”
“No pancakes.”
“Maybe a little silver-dollar one.”
“No silver-dollar.”
“You got the little baby ones?”
Braise turns her head toward the man. She frowns, looking straight at Buck. He was enjoying this way too much.
Deciding to finally make it clear, she finally states what she really wants. “No pancakes, no rye toast. I like pumpernickel.”
“I do have pumpernickel, yeah.”
“Pumpernickel?” Buck lifts an eyebrow.
Determined to end this useless conversation, she just smiles and orders her toast to the very patient waitress. “Pumpernickel toast. That’d be perfect.”
As she nods and turns around, Sebastien stops her.
”Maggie, wait. One more thing.”
He winks at the waitress.
“That’s for you. You take that with you till we see each other again in case you miss me too much. Okay?”
The waitress responds with a giggle before walking away. In disbelief, Luna shakes her head and looks at him.
“Why do you do this?”
He turns around, looking at Luna now, like a proud idiot. “What?”
“Winking at waitresses like that.”
“Waitresses like me.”
Luna escapes a chuckle before leaning forward. “Nobody likes you, Seb.”
“And?” He answers, tilting his head on the side before she leans back on her seat, crossing her arms.
“And? What do you got for me?”
__
present time
“Did it work?”
Harry was walking around the room. His desk was a mess but not for him. Everything was placed in an order only he could comprehend.
He reaches for a file under a pile of other files before leaning on the side of his desk and opening it. Then, after several seconds, Harry lifts his head up, meeting Buck’s eyes. “Did it work?”
The operator grins before rolling his shoulders to stretch his back. It wasn’t like he had offered her the job multiple times. -No. It was exactly like that. Harry knew Braise was hard to satisfy, Buck had told him so many times. Persistent. That’s what he wrote in Luna’s file.
Sebastien wasn’t going to answer immediately. He liked the suspense. “She’s a stubborn one.” Harry knew that. Why was he telling him again?
“She’s hot headed and stubborn.” Buck was repeating himself, making sure the director of Rainbow Six Siege knew what he was doing. “Please, tell me who you’re gonna pair her with, Harry.”
It was an interesting question. You needed a stubborn operator to canalise another one.
“I’m still searching. But I do have several ideas.” He answers to Côté, before closing the file and smiling.
Harry knew he could count on Buck to help him. He knew a lot on Luna. Had known her for one year already. That’s why he asked him to offer the job to Braise. Maybe it would be better coming from a friend’s mouth than a total stranger or a superior. “Côté, you are a smart man. You know her better than I do.” Sebastien can’t help but smirk at the compliment.
“Who do you think would be a good fit?”
But even good friends have limits. Buck didn’t know what to say. If she could have zero partner, that’d just be great.
Harry sat on his chair “You’re confused, aren’t you?”
Sebastien readjusted his collar. Civilian clothes were not his strong suit. He had asked several times for advices from Luna until he realized she dressed just as bad as him. “She’s a good soldier. A great one. A restless one. She has many qualities that would make her very suitable for Rainbow and I think you know that.”
The doctor nods and leans on his desk. He knew that. That’s why he chose her. He just needed to know if she really -really wanted it.
Harry waited, thinking Buck had more to tell him about Luna. That he would eventually finish his sentence. “I trust that you know if she is ready to be part of this team or not.”
Without hesitation, Sebastien answers, looking right at the doctor. “Oh, that she is.” And she really was. More than ready. There was nothing wrong with her profile, so why was Buck hesitating so much? Harry noticed it. Maybe there was something he wasn’t saying. Something that could compromise her application.
“Côté. You should know I learn everything I can about the agents I choose. There’s nothing you’re going to hide from me. I know about Ursi, therefore I know about her incident in Ottawa.”
Buck lifts his head, surprised.
“She’s angry. She’s angry, but she is not terrified of losing control anymore.”
Harry got up. Readjusting his glasses, he walked slowly to the other side of the room. He knew why she would be such a good asset for them. “She isn’t scared because she knows how to use this anger to her own benefit.”
Buck, like a proud father, nods. Remembering the event that took place half a year ago, during an interrogation.
They were in Ontario. Close to Ottawa in one of RCMP’s HQ. Several agents were gathered in front of a glass. Some were taking notes and others just watching from the back. On the other side of that glass was a man, sitting on a metallic chair. He had handcuffs on and couldn’t help but look down at the table in front of him.
For some reason, the suspect chose to avoid at all cost the gaze of the woman sitting in front of him. Lieutenant Ursi, who was way out of patient by now, looked at the man in front of him. Accused of kidnapping two underage girls, he was standing there, almost ashamed, avoiding all eye contacts, and it was the most irritating behavior for Luna.
“We’ve been at it for hours, Côté.” Said one of the agents on the other side.
They had been interrogating the man, trying every technique, every way of making him talk. The only thing he had the courage to say was “sorry” under his breath.
“Let her work.” Ordered Buck, trying to calm the other agents. But he knew Luna was out of options. She would crack very soon.
Her fist was clenched on the side of the table, nails digging into the inside of her palm. She was trying to keep her calm and not break. But everything she hated was right in front of her. They all knew he was guilty so why weren’t they acting? Luna simply couldn’t afford to waste any more time. They needed a location. They needed to send their strike team there.
The lieutenant frowned. Slowly lifting herself up, leaning forward towards the suspect. Her hands gripped the side of the table as she lifted her gaze towards the man. When it came to endangering people's lives, especially children, Luna was merciless.
“If you tell me you're sorry again and you don’t answer my question, I promise you, I will tear you apart. I will make sure that you regret not cooperating with me for the rest of your miserable life.”
Sebastien knocked on the glass, trying to defuse the situation. Luna does not turn around. Her gaze was still on the kidnapper. His gaze was still looking down which made the Lieutenant absolutely boil.
She punched the table with her fist, right besides one of the man's hand creating a loud metallic sound in the room.
“Look at me!” Luna almost growled.
The suspect lifted his head up immediately, trembling as he tried to talk. He was sweating, scared for his life, but he still didn't answer. Luna waited several seconds. No answer.
Before Luna could make another move, the interrogation door opened and Sebastien errupted in the room. He placed his hand on the woman's shoulder, making a small gesture with his head, signaling her to go outside.
“Côté, we don't have time for-”
Her sentence was cut by the whispering words of Buck into her ear. When he finished talking she froze. There was no way. There was just no way Sebastien told her the girls had been found dead.
It happened very quickly. She was enraged. Luna moved her hand on the back of the suspect's head slamming it as hard as she could on the table. Whining, the suspect held his now broken nose, tears forming on the side of his eyes. He looked at the other operator in the room for help, but as soon as he did, another blow came from Ursi, striking right into his jaw, knocking him out of his chair.
Buck immediatly tried to keep her away from the man as other agents barge into the room. He grabbed her arms, but she kept throwing her fists at him, not able to stop. She wanted to kill him for wasting their time and having the girls killed. It was the last straw.
Until his face was unrecognizable, she kept disfiguring him. The other men tried to keep her away but she had never battle so fiercely to kill a man. She wanted him dead.
When she was beating him, the punch she throwed were so strong, his head was banging on the floor. Both of them were down, when the others finally seperated them.
Luna was panting, her knuckles were bloody as Buck held her arms, keeping her from moving more. The suspect was still down, crying out of pain. With a broken nose and blood coming out of several orivices, his trembling hands touched his wounds. He couldn't see anymore. One of his eye was covered in blood while the other couldn't even open anymore. His wounds were going to be permanent.
That was it. That was the only time Ursi had ever lost control. Her anger was so great she needed to let it all out. She could not do nothing when she learned that these poor girls spent their last moments alive begging to live, desperately knowing nobody would come for them.
It was this day that Luna decided she would never waste her time with a subject. If violence was the only thing they understood, she'd be more than happy to show them.
__
back in time, at the diner
Sipping her water, Braise looks at the man in front of her devouring his breakfast. She slowly puts her glass down. You could see scars on her knuckles. “So he wants me in?”
Sebastien had proposed Luna the job. They talked about it for some time now, but today was the day she was going to give him a final answer. Braise wasn’t sure yet. Leaving her unit behind was a big thing. But she would be able to finally learn more and participate in even more important operations. She would be part of a bigger organisation and she was definitely interested. Rainbow regrouped the best of the best. Was she ready for this kind of pressure?
Buck swallows his food, a bit too loudly for Braise’s ears, before placing his fork down and leaning forward with his forearms on the table. “You’re ready for this, Luna. He’s satisfied with your file. What’s stopping you?”
She knew what was stopping her. The only time she lost control. The only time she almost got kicked out of her unit.
“If it’s about-
Braise interrupts him, knowing what he was about to say. “Yes, it is. It isn’t written in my dossier, Seb. What if Six learns about it?”
“We need people like you in Rainbow.” Corrects Buck. And they did. They needed people that knew how to use their anger to accomplish the mission.
Luna crosses her arms, her back against the chair. “What if he sees it as an obstacle?”
“He won’t. Six is smart. He values every single one of our flaws. We all have something to bring to this team. Including you.”
Buck was right. Harry would probably see it as something he could use.
Luna lets out a sigh, a small smile tugging at her lips. She nods, knowing what her answer was, now.
Buck understood immediately, letting out a smile as well. He raises his hand, asking for the check as the nice waitress comes back, already smiling at the man.
As they stand up, preparing to leave, Buck receives a call, lifting his phone up to show Braise as he get out of the diner.
Luna turns to the waitress who had been watching Sebastien leave with attention.
“I’m really sorry for my friend. He was kicked in the head as a child.” Luna says, apologizing for his previous behavior.
The waitress giggles. “He’s really not that bad.”
“Oh, no. He is.”
As she leaves the diner with the sweet sound of the bell on the door, Buck is waiting for her outside. She takes the steps down and burries her hands in her coat.
“Who was it?” She asks looking at him with one of her eyebrow lifted.
Sebastien rubs his beard and puts his phone away.
“Harry.”
She nods, knowing she needed to give him an answer now. Her gaze wonders around, as she twirls her tongue in her mouth, before her eyes land on Côté. This choice would probably change the rest of her life. But Luna was ready. She was more than ready and most importantly, she wanted it.
With a smirk on her lips, she finally answers. “I want in.”

This one has been on my 'watch list' for a while, though I was getting foiled by the simple fact that it just wasn't on any streaming service. I kept waiting and waiting - and eventually I got sick of waiting and went and found it at the library. As can happen with DVDs, it did have issues and skip a bit (the scene right before intermission, where they're talking about how his time as a driver is coming to an end; the scene right after intermission, where he's getting 'locked up' - and in the next scene I see, he shows up again, so no idea what, if anything, happened there), but otherwise, no issues in that regard.
Me & Tigmanshu Dhulia have sort of differing opinions when it comes to the movies he's directed - while I have wanted to watch this on and the sequels (mostly simply because, well, there are sequels so I'd like to see where the story goes; also, Jimmy Shergill), I really did not like Raat Akeli Hai at all, and I've tried to get into Bullet Raja multiple times but keep failing (mostly because I know eventually we're going to see the deaths of both Shergill and Chunky Pandey). I do still want to see Charas at some point, maybe.
But, anyhow, this movie. Well, it is exactly as slow-paced as I expected it would be, and yet, it never really drags too much. I mean, it takes a minute to get going after introducing our 3 titular characters, but things do take up after that - and especially after the double cross eliminates a major rival.
Mahie Gill, whom I loved in Aagey Se Right (love that movie!), takes her turn as ... well, what essentially turns into her go as a woman who will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Which, in this case, is the attentions of her husband on her (and not on his mistress) - there's some backstory referenced where it is implied that his lack of time with her is the direct result of her cheating on him after marriage, but beyond that all we really learn is that apparently he's responsible for that lover's death (and what appears to be repeated psychotic breaks she has after the fact?).
But as things go on, she finds another lover - ironically, apparently, with the same name - and whilst she yearns for the attention of said husband, she's also not beyond spending time with this other guy (the 'gangster' in the film title). And, when he's madly in love with her, she makes her move. It isn't clear if this was her plan from the start, or if it just arises from the given circumstances, but she's able to twist things as necessary.
Of course, he's equally adept at things and throws in a few wrinkles of his own - wrinkles that see the demise of the silent-ish (and yet, cool) right arm man (in front of his daughter, no less!), an ambush that leads to a key character getting paralyzed at the end, and, when all is said and done, the death of this gangster - who has not only over-estimated his own importance in the story, but also has missed the multiple clues about how 'Biwi' has no desire in giving up what she has.
Deepal Shaw's character talks A LOT when you are first introduced to her, but she eventually becomes a ... well, I don't want to say fun, because no character in this movie is really 'fun' ... calming presence, if you will. She seems clearly taken by the newcomer at the beginning, but as things fall not in her way, she seems to return to her life before him. The death of her father, though, seems to stunt her at the end - I wonder if we'll see more of her in the sequel.
The ending does make me wonder if, while it was not planned this way (I don't think, at least), 'Biwi' will end up taking this opportunity and running with it, Dasvi style, and if their relationship will completely invert from him being in charge to her being in charge, or if maybe there is still hope for things to be fixed between them.
I don't think any of our characters are inherently likable - though sitting here now, 13 years later, I think in general people have pretty favorable views of Jimmy Shergill and Randeep Hooda (and I've already stated that I do like Mahie Gill), so it's a bit harder right now to just think "what horrible people" - but the story also does a good job of making it clear that while these folks are our protagonists (and, simultaneously, antagonists), we're more just along for the journey and not really here to be their friends. Not necessarily outright, but even just by their actions that we are privy to - you tolerate them for the story, for the tension, for the tragic ending that you know will be coming in this type of story. An ending that, while tragic, is less of the "oh no, I can't believe you killed of this character!" tragic and more of the "greed is a tragedy, and death is a tragedy" tragic.
I enjoyed this. Part 2, tomorrow, maybe.
