#complex yuri on the other hand is very easily characterised

I mean, treating yaoi as the opposite of yuri just doesn't make sense mathematically: boys are not the inverse of girls. The actual opposite of yuri would somehow have to involve fewer than zero girls, and that's not an easy thing to characterise.

Crunchyroll Anime Awards
Now that Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards voting is open, I thought I’d share my votes on my blog. This post came out a little long but I’m not putting it under a cut because I don’t want to. It took me like an hour to write so yeah.
Voting is open from the 3rd January until the 10th January and you can only vote once per browser. To vote for each of the categories, you can click on them.
My votes:
Anime of the Year: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
This show is one of my few 10/10s, so it’s no surprise that it was my choice for this category. I love everything about this show - from the characters to the voice acting, the music choices and the tragic story. I was so sad when it ended and so happy when S2 was announced!
This slot however, could have been taken by Yuri!!! On Ice if it hadn’t fucked up the last episode so badly by going against the narrative it had been building.
Hero of the Year: Deku from Boku no Hero Academia
There weren’t many options for this category because I don’t think I watched many fighting anime this year. Deku was cute and kept trying to better himself, so he deserves this slot from me.
Villain of the Year: Yoshikage Kira from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Holy shit this guy is so intelligent and weird that he had to be villain of the year! The other nominees were too uninteresting. I really liked Kira, especially in the last few episodes. No more hands for you, mister!
Best Boy: Yakumo from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Admittedly, this was a very tough choice. I love Bon/Kiku/Yakumo very much because he is such an interesting and complex character overall. His desire to do things outside his gender box really hit a note with me, and his one-sided love for Shin/Hatsu/Sukeroku pulled at my heartstrings. We see so much of him from an early age to an old one and he great no matter his age.
The runner up here is obviously Katsuki Yuri from Yuri!!! On Ice. His battles with anxiety made him extremely relatable for me and I loved how he persevered when stakes were high. Alas, with the weird characterisation in episode 12, I didn’t feel like he deserved to win this for me.
Best Girl: Miyokichi from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (write-in)
I didn’t like any of the nominees for this category and the only other female character that came to mind initially was Nako from Orange. I think she flip-flopped too much to deserve a vote, however Miyokichi was an extremely interesting female character who was integral to the plot. She may have been the cause for the tragedy but all she wanted was to be loved by the person who had her heart - and we can all understand that, surely?
Best Fight Scene: Deku VS Kacchan from Boku no Hero Academia
Again, I didn’t watch many shows with a fight scene but this one did stand out to me. The way Deku ran around the building and used his head to fight against Kacchan was pretty damn cool.
Best Animation: Yuri!!! On Ice
Part of me is angry that I even picked this, because the animation in this show was not always the best (understatement). However... it was such an ambitious project that didn’t seem to have enough budget or time to meet its goals that it deserved this spot for simply doing as well as it did! The episodes with few skating programs in were animated beautifully and some of the routines were downright gorgeous.
Most Heartwarming: The Kiss from Yuri!!! On Ice
Of the choices they had to go with, I’m surprised Crunchyroll chose this one. For me, the most heartwarming scene was probably the ring exchange (or Yuri finally doing a masterful version of his free skate) but this one was fantastic too. I remember being shocked and overwhelmed with joy when I saw this scene, earning it many a rewatch.
Drama of the Year: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
The second I saw this category I knew what my choice was doing to be. The drama in this show was fucking excellent. It made me so sad and so happy when things were going well and I’m excited for S2.
Best Couple: Yuri & Victor from Yuri!!! On Ice
The most healthy and interesting relationship I’ve seen bless the anime world. Well, I guess until episode 12 that is. Up until that point they establish boundaries, seek affection from one another and get freaking engaged. I didn’t much care about marriage until it became a thing in this show!
Best Comedy: Sakamoto desu ga?
Very few pickings for this category. I couldn’t even think of an alternative that wasn’t Gintama (which didn’t count because it started airing in 2015). This show was funny enough.
Best Action: Boku no Hero Academia
Again, I didn’t watch many action shows but this one was genuinely good. For a one-cour shounen title, it did extremely well. I’m very much looking forward to S2, and I’m grateful it hasn’t been turned into a weekly show like One Piece or Naruto where it could become stuffed with filler and pacing issues.
Best Opening: Yuri!!! On Ice
History Maker is so fucking good that there’s no contest. I have listened to it so many times outside of the show and I’ve never skipped watching it, so it has easily earned this vote.
Best Ending: Yuri!!! On Ice
Really loved this ending as well, especially since I learned that the singer was none other than Georgi! That guy has sweet voice control, I must say.
So yeah, those were my votes. What were yours?
