If it wasn't for @nekromaenia recently following me I never would've known that Majors was still in business. The last time I was in Majors, they were still housed inside the entrance of a Pathmark. And as I said in a previous post, my first purchase from them was Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden. Since Pathmarks everywhere went out of business by the time I moved to Jersey in 2015, I simply assumed Majors was gone. I'm grateful to find that I was dead wrong, as their newest location is not even that far from where they were. As you can see, I bought a few things today during a brief, fly by visit. Support your local music store if there's still one by you, they're a very RARE privilege to explore in the age of downloading. And nekro, since you're the reason I'm aware of the new location, here is a bit trivia for you. See that now closed T Mobile building that's just around the corner from Majors? Way back when, that was a Coconuts. Years later it was taken over by FYE until 2009, I think, when T Mobile bought the building from underneath them. Leprosy, a very important record for Death. Unlike its predecessor, it's the first record to feature and entire band, featuring Massacre bassist Terry Butler, as opposed to just Chuck and a drummer. In turn, the songs on Leprosy, compared to Scream Bloody Gore, just sound far more fuller and are FAR more intricate. I'd call this the first ever Technical Death Metal record a year before Morbid Angel released THEIR debut. A lot of these songs are absolute fucking BANGERS. Not only that, this was the first Death Metal record where real life issues were addressed. "Pull The Plug", the bands eventually live encore, is basically addressing hospital DNR orders. Then there's "Open Casket", which was all too personal to Chuck. "Open Casket" was written about his older brother, Frank, who was killed in a car accident at the age of 16. Countdown to Extinction, Megadeth's first streamlined record of the 90's, released in 1992. Chances are, while Capital Records did want the rest of the band to write music along with Dave Mustaine, Mustaine had to have felt the need to keep up with his ex bandmates. Besides, more money means more drugs. Yeah, that sobriety didn't last too long, girls. But don't misunderstand: this was still a damn great album, and it proves that Megadeth didn't necessarily NEED to be ultra technical to make great songs, although there were still several moments of intricacy here. Fan of "Symphony of Destruction"? It's the second track on this album. "Sweating Bullets", which I first heard on WSOU a few years earlier? It's the fifth track. I also feel like, with tracks such as "Captive Honour", Mustaine was really able to show that he had one hell of a vocal range, which only improved on the next album. Countdown would reach Double Platinum status and hit #2 on the Billboard charts, which irked Mustaine and his fragile ego because his ex bandmates hit #1 not even a year earlier and he didn't. But months later, Megadeth did win the Humane Society's Genesis Award for Countdown's title track, which raised the issue of caged hunts. Recommend tracks: Skin O' My Teeth, Symphony Of Destruction, Architecture Of Aggression, Foreclosure Of A Dream, Sweating Bullets, Captive Honour, Ashes In Your Mouth. Another recommendation: NEVER listen to the 2004 remix that's out there now. It sucks. Mustaine RUINED the PUNCH of Nick's drums and it kills the vibe of the album as a whole. Just YouTube the original tracks. I'd first read about @lambofgod in a 2002 Guitar World article covering the top #undergroundheavymetal bands of that time. LOG released their first album, New American Gospel two years earlier. A year later WSOU began playing the tracks "Ruin" and #11th Hour" off the regular. They were of this upcoming, new release from LOG called As The Palaces Burn on @prostheticrecords...and both tracks kicked serious ass. I BOUGHT ATPB on the week of its release at Sam Goody on a Friday night before being abducted by some younger kids who felt bad(?) that I was sitting by myself at Johnny Rockets. I can't make that up. What took me by surprise more than ANYTHING else was seeing that, while there weren't too many guitar solos on the record (that'd change over time!), the track "Purified" featured a badass guitar solo by ex-Megadeth guitarist @chrispoland_official. CHRIS FUCKING POLAND!!!!!! Turns out the band are Megadeth disciples all the way down to their sometimes political lyrics What was more? The album was also produced by @dvntownsend, then of Strapping Young Lad. He to me was the Todd Rundgren of #extrememetal, so you knew he wasn't producing anything short of true QUALITY metal. As fate would have it, ATPB would sell 100,000 copies, much like @shadowsfallband did with The Art Of Balance, in a time where albums sales were dying, and earned themselves their first major label deal a yearly later.
