The bullets ripped through the metal of the van and all Jay could think was protecting Hailey. It came out of nowhere and with the first few shots made impact, Jay dove for Hailey, grabbing her and rolling her under him. 

Each round that broke through was loud and they came one after the other. Everything flashed around him. Light began to stream into the van from the holes and that only made him panic a little more. He reached for one of the vests from the side of the van. Hailey was tucked under him and he tried to make them as small as possible. 

“Jay!” she cried. 

But he had no mind to respond. He could only think one thing; keep her safe. 

He covered her as best he could with the vest as their attackers continued their assault. He felt Hailey grip his shirt in her hands and instinctively he held her tighter. His ears were ringing so he barely registered when the bullets stopped. There was a beat of sudden silence and neither Jay nor Hailey dared to breath. Jay was sure someone would approach the van and so pulled Hailey closer as he raised his gun pointing it to the van door. A second later, he barely heard urgent shouting and then the squeal of tires and then silence again. 

Hailey and Jay both fell back, taking a moment to catch their breath. 

“You good?” Hailey asked but Jay didn’t answer. She looked over to him and saw he had his eyes shut. She shook him, panic flaring up in her chest. “Jay!” 

“Gimme a minute Hails. My ears are still ringing,” He mumbled tightly. 

Hailey’s hand fell to his chest as she watched him. A part of her – the part that knew Jay oh so well knew he was lying – but she didn’t push him. Instead, she reached over to grab the radio – at least that had been her intention when she noticed something. She started pushing his shirt up and that immediately got his attention. 

“Hey! Whoa! What are you doing?” 

“You’ve been shot!” she told him. 

“W-what?” he asked confused and then looked down to his stomach. “Shit,” he groaned. 

The moment he had seen the bullet wound, he had felt the pain that had been hidden by the adrenaline. It burned through him and Jay a new thought occurred to him. 

“Hails…” he groaned and her hands stilled over him. “I …” he paused when his vision cleared. She was leaning over him, some of her hair had escaped her ponytail. But it was the look in her eyes that stole his breath. “Don’t make me go to Med.” 

Through watery eyes, Hailey chuckled. “You don’t have a choice, Jay.” 

“Please,” he begged. 

“I’m not much of a doctor, in case you hadn’t noticed, detective,” she teased him but it was laced with pure fear as she saw the blood seeping from his side. “Jay! No! No! Please!” 

He mumbled something unintelligible as Hailey finally reached for the radio.

“5021 Henry. Officer down! I repeat Officer down!” She looked at Jay and then grasped the radio tightly before saying desperately. “Please. It’s Jay.”
