Pune Ch SF: Valentin Vacherot [4] def. Dane Sweeny [7] 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
D. Sweeny might have tried to absorb the pace in the third set, but Vacherot's clutch serving and injected pace sped up the point construction a little, taking into account the Pune condition. This resulted in the Australian seventh seed being completely out-paced in the second set, often being devoid of options as soon as Vacherot went deeper on return. As a result, most of the flow in the last two sets went in Vacherot's hands instead, while D. Sweeny still had pacing problems despite excelling on it in the first set, thus causing the Monegasque to maximize his chances with a 100% break point conversion rate out of his 3 chances compared to D. Sweeny's 20% percentage out of his 5 break points.
On the other hand, both players had their slight edges in different service games. Scoring 4 more aces than D. Sweeny (6 to 4), the first serves carried Vacherot out of a lot of problems while questioning D. Sweeny's balance on return in the last two sets, thus he won 4% more points on his first serves than D. Sweeny. In contrast, the Monegasque fourth seed's double faults (4 to 3) faded his second serve winning percentage 4% below D. Sweeny, who still won 65% of his points from the second serves.
Third seed Adam Walton already awaits in the finals, where he defeated Duje Ajdukovic 7-5, 7-6(5) in a competitive match with a rollercoaster second set, considering A. Walton was up a double break somewhere. With both players still in form with their respective winning records (10-1 for A. Walton and 17-1 for Vacherot), as well as having similar approaches to the match, this could be interesting to see how one stands out in this match with the necessary balance, especially the ones who took initiatives and chances the most. Should be an exciting evening to look forward to!

D. Sweeny might have had his chances as soon as Vacherot had an unforced error, but taking into account the latter's clutch serving and the former's unforced errors, it turned out to be a costly one as soon as he had his own error sprees afterward. It all started in the fourth game, where Vacherot executed a no-look volley to slightly minimize the gap before D. Sweeny held his serves to 2-2. That could have been one of the most important holds considering the Australian had even several break points, but Vacherot held his serves firm to 3-2 afterward.
Somehow, D. Sweeny might have absorbed some pace from Vacherot and tried to construct some points in hopes to give more pressure, for example smashing his way to force another deuce, but Vacherot still successfully held his service game. The latter's net game also deserved credit to set up the said game point before holding to 3-2, but D. Sweeny's unclutchness went costly as soon as Vacherot won a point from a return ace in the second point of the tenth game, pressing the Australian's third shots until his +1 backhand error afterward converted Vacherot's match point, thus letting the Monegasque fourth seed taking the third set 6-3, as well as securing his fourth career Challenger final, but for the first time, in a tournament not located in Nonthaburi.

Local teen Dane Sweeny first took out the top seed at the event in the first round of the Hooper Accountants Toowoomba International and then took out Marcelo Barrios Vera of Chile 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, ranked No.327 on the ATP Charts in a bid to reach his maiden Australian Pro Tour quarterfinal.
“It’s the best win of my career in regards to ranking,” Sweeny said. “I played really smart in the conditions and in the end, it got me the job done,” he further added.
He has been in really good form in recent times, taking last week’s Brisbane champion Dayne Sweeney all the way in their opening round encounter. “I really wanted to get that win but it gave me confidence and I will use that to back myself against these guys,” he said. “My ranking’s nowhere near them but I feel that I can bring a level that’s as good as if not better. I’m just believing in myself a bit more.”
Speaking about his short term plans, the young Australian added, “I’ve just got to stay strong mentally and keep training hard and there will be good things to come.”
Sweeny will face Alexis Musialek for a quarterfinal berth, who took out wildcard Benard Nkomba unable to continue down 7-6(0) 4-2 after the latter was forced to withdraw from the clash due to injury.

Vacherot tried to capitalize on D. Sweeny's critical errors through absorbing pace, followed by utilizing his serve while trying to balance his moment. Interestingly, D. Sweeny kicked off the second set with a backhand lob winner, proceeding to hold his serves to 1-1 slight after.
However, the Australian seventh seed's moment did not last long once Vacherot tried to go slightly deeper on return. This caused the former to trouble his third shots (mostly forehand), two of which caused Vacherot's break of serve (3-1) before he consolidated the lead thanks to his backhand passes (4-1), confirming that the Pune conditions also suited his game.
It took two games later before D. Sweeny should have served to stay in the second set. However, he turned out to have an erroneous one, with a double fault peaking such error sprees for the Monegasque to break for the second set 6-2, thus bringing this match to the deciding set.

Meanwhile, in Pune...
The second semifinal match also commenced between seventh seed Dane Sweeny, who notably saved several match points to defeat wild card Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) in the quarterfinals, and Valentin Vacherot, who progressed after defeating Enzo Couacaud 7-6(2), 6-4 in the same round. Knowing both players' forms and different approaches to the game, this could test their necessary adjustments to the point construction, as well as how they executed them, which turned out to deliver in different ways possible.
Somehow, it took several consecutive holds when both players tried to find the open court or any other loopholes in the other's game. D. Sweeny's efforts finally paid off in the ninth game, where he passed Vacherot from his forehand side to set himself one point ahead before firing a backhand down-the-line winner to secure his break point. The said point was then converted thanks to the preceding flow with the pass, allowing D. Sweeny to successfully serve for the first set (6-4) despite double-faulting on his set point becoming the hurdle.
